Walter V. Cowley
Walter Vernon Cowley, 81, of 417 Briarmont Drive, Winchester, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Cowley was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Boone County, W.Va., son of William Valentine and Virgie Lee Rogers Cowley. He was retired from Halls Motor Freight in Hagerstown, Md.
He was a member of the Baptist faith, Elks Lodge BPOE 867, Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, Winchester Eagles Aerie 824, American Legion Post 21, and VFW Post 2123.
He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. He received two Bronze Stars for valor while serving in the 63rd Infantry Division, Company B, 254th Infanty Regiment.
He married Mary Louise Kirby in 1940 in Greenup, Ky. Mrs. Cowley died June 14, 1991.
Surviving are four sons, James Walter Cowley of Marshall, Rodney Lewis Cowley and William Franklin Cowley, both of Winchester, and Seibert Daniel Cowley of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; three daughters, Beverly Louise Jankiewicz of Churchville, Sally Charlene Shucet of Pittsburgh, and Mary Lee Cowley of Star Tannery; a sister, Hettie Francis Brown of Canton, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Barbara Ellen Cowley, is deceased.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James Utt officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: James Kenneth Robinson III, James Warren Cowley, John Kirby Robinson, Antonio Serbia, Matthew LaFollette, Bryce Cowley, Alex Cowley, and Nicholas Shucet.

Roger Ginevan
Roger “Ginnie” Ginevan, 41, of Bloomery, W.Va., died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Ginevan was born Nov. 6, 1958, in Annanoplis, Md., the son of Paul E. and Joyce E. Shrout Ginevan. He worked for Boyer Landscaping of Stephens City.
He was a 1977 graduate of Hampshire High School in Romney, W.Va.
Surviving with his parents, of Bloomery, are a sister, Sandy Baker of Bloomery; and his maternal grandmother, Anna E. Shrout of Winchester.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating. Burial will be in Ginevan Cemetery, Paw Paw, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Elizabeth H. Kimball
Elizabeth H. Cannon Kimball, 86, of 380 Old Bethel Lane, Winchester, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Kimball was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Andrew H. and Florence Elizabeth Trumbower Cannon. She was an editor and writer with the Correspondence Department of the Department of Defense and retired after 35 years.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Westhampton College, Richmond.
She was an active member of Frederick County Extension Homemakers Club and recorded more than 100 tapes for the Recording for the Blind.
She married Daniel Blaine Kimball on Aug. 25, 1938, in Arlington.
Surviving with her husband, are a son, Daniel Blaine Kimball Jr. of Reading, Pa.; a daughter, Karen Kimball of Arlington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Andrew C. Kimball, is deceased.
A private service is planned for a later date.

Dorothy V. Peffer
Dorothy V. Peffer, 73, formerly of Middletown, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Peffer was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Middletown, the daughter of John C. and Lonnie Pangle Miller. She was a peeler for National Fruit Product Co.
She attended Waterlick Church.
She married Charles W. Peffer on Aug. 21, 1954, in Strasburg.
Surviving is a brother, Charles H. Miller of Winchester.
Two sons, Wayne A. Peffer and Dale E. Peffer, are deceased.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Stephens City, with Dr. Ruth C. Crum officiating.

S. Peachie Russell
Samuel Peachie Russell, 79, of 229 Bethel Grange Road, Winchester, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Russell was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Frederick County, the son of Randolph P. and Maude Lillian Williams Russell. He was raised from infancy by Stover D. and Virginia Russell Carper.
Mr. Russell was self-employed as a floor mechanic, retiring after 30 years. He was a corporal in the Army during World War II, and served in the China-Burma-India Theatre and with Quartermaster Corps in India.
He was a member of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He married Hilda “Tootie” Edwards on Dec. 24, 1942, in Frederick County.
Surviving with his wife, are a son, Samuel S. Russell of Winchester; and a grandson.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, with Pastor Rhodes Wooley and Pastor Dr. Conrad Christianson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

F. Ellsworth Turner
F. Ellsworth Turner, 85, of 345 Pine St., Front Royal, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Turner was born Jan. 26, 1915, in Winchester, the son of Larrie and Virginia Newman Turner. He worked for the Department of Justice for 12 years and the Senate Office Building for three years. He was administrative assistant for 22 years to the Chief Justice of the U.S. District Court, Judge Joseph C. McGarragy.
He operated the first all black bookstore in the District of Columbia from 1964 to 1970.
He was a 1931 graduate of Douglas School, a 1933 graduate of Garnett Patterson Jr. High School in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Washington, D.C., in 1936. He attended Virginia State University, Howard University, and graduated with an LLB-JD degree from Robert H. Terrell Law School.
He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and a former member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
He was a member of Sigma Delta Tau Fraternity, the TransAfrica Organization, and Apple Blossom Chapter 196 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He was a member of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, 32nd degree Mason, the United Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the Imperial Council AEAO Order, and noble of the Mystic Shrine Nile Temple 127, and member of King Hiram Lodge 53.
Surviving is his wife of 42 years, Margretta Baltimore Turner.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Gilbert M. Mack Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of King Hiram Masonic Lodge 53.

Elmer W. Truslow
Elmer Warren Truslow, 84, of East Whitlock Avenue, Winchester, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Truslow was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Stafford County, the son of Chester Lee and Beulah Snellings Truslow.
He was a surveyor with the Virginia Department of Transportation, and served in the Navy during World War II.
He also was a member of First Baptist Church, Hiram Lodge, and American Legion Post 21 of Winchester.
He married Katherine Jackson on Sept. 2, 1939, in Winchester.
He is survived by a son, Edward Warren Truslow of Huntington, N.Y.; a daughter, Joyce T. Wolfe of Clarke County; a sister, Olive T. Yancey of Spotsylvania County; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Sam P. Jones Jr. and the Rev. Warren E. Boling officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.

Audrey M. Guthridge
Audrey Margaret Guthridge, 78, of 812 McDonald Road, Winchester, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Guthridge was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Frederick County, the daughter of Beecher Lee and Elsie Mae Taylor DeHaven. She was an inspector with O’Sullivan Corp., retiring after 30 years of service. She attended Lamps United Methodist Church.
Her husband, George Borden Guthridge, died in death in 1963.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Dare Guthridge of Winchester; a son, Thomas Cover Guthridge of Frederick County; two brothers, Talbert DeHaven and Robert DeHaven, both of Frederick County; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Two sons, George Lincoln Guthridge and Edward William Guthridge, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lamps United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Barry Foster officiating.
Burial will be in Lamps United Methodist Cemetery.

Josephine S. Hoffman
Josephine Smallwood “Jo” Hoffman, 77, of 117 Lakewood Drive, Stephens City, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at her residence.
Mrs. Hoffman was born July 2, 1922, in Upperville, the daughter of Francis George and Agnes Corrine Kerns Smallwood. She retired from Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital, where she was a licensed practical nurse. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, and was a past member of the Children of the Confederacy.
She was a graduate of Upperville High School and Triplett Technical Institute, where she received her degree in practical nursing.
She married Carlton L. Hoffman on Aug. 26, 1941, in Upperville. Mr. Hoffman died April 6, 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Frances H. Hough and Zadiee H. Pangle, both of Stephens City; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Carey officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodstock.

Fred Gold Butler Sr.
Fred Gold Butler Sr., 71, of Inwood, W.Va., died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Butler was born Jan. 28, 1929, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of Anna Sophronia Dalenger Butler and Fred Herbert Butler. Mr. Butler was a lifelong dairy farmer and served as president of the West Virginia Farm Bureau Board of Directors, on which he served from 1984 to 1997. He served as secretary-treasurer of the National Milk Producers Federation and was a member of its Executive Committee for 16 years. He was named West Virginia’s Outstanding Young Farmer by the Jaycees in 1963 and was recognized as West Virginia Future Farmers of America Outstanding Agri-Business Farmer in 1976. He was past president of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce and was past president of the Inwood-Bunker Hill Lions Club, where he had 45 years of perfect attendance. He was owner and president Wright Motors Inc. for 35 years. Mr. Butler was an Army veteran and a lifelong member of Arden United Methodist Church.
He was survived for 43 years to Norma Gene Lineberg.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Fred Gold Butler Jr. of Inwood; a daughter, Judy Rae Bechtold of Martinsburg; a brother, James William Butler of Inwood; a sister, Anna M. Crowell of Martinsburg; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Arden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter F. Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Arden United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Earl S. Broughman Sr.
Earl Stuart Broughman Sr., 72, of 519 Gray Ave., Winchester, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Broughman was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Covington, the son of Earl Stuart and Margaret Broughman. He was a retired landscaper in the Baltimore area.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, with the rank of corporal.
He married Rose Ann Cevella, who died Oct. 18, 1994.
Surviving are two sons, Earl S. Broughman Jr. of Winchester and David Broughman of Baltimore; a stepson, Donald Hudac; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Locust Grove Cemetery, Stephens City, with David A. Owings officiating.

Bernard Hardy
Bernard Hardy, 87, of RR1, Box 54, Augusta, W.Va., died Thursday, April 6, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.
Mr. Hardy was born April 22, 1912, in Baltimore.
He had worked in a warehouse and had retired.
He was married to Mary Margaret Miller, who died in 1974.
Surviving are two daughters, Virgie Riehl of Baltimore and Verlabelle Pugh of Augusta; a son, Archie J. Hardy of Baltimore; a sister, Mabel Smith of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
Inurnment will be in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Dorsey, Md.

Kathleen Hash
Kathleen Branner Hash, 78, of 909 Pennsylvania Ave., Winchester, died April 7, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center.
She was born June 13, 1921 in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late James Lester and Elizabeth Miller Branner.
Mrs. Hash was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Winchester, and a former member of Rader Lutheran Church in Timberville. She was a branch bank manager at Shenandoah Valley National Bank and First American Bank in Winchester before retiring. She had been a member of the Quota Club in Winchester for a number of years.
On Sept. 14, 1944 she married Warren G. Hash. He died Dec. 16, 1975.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen H. Bruce of Mechanicsville and Linda H. Poole of Winchester; a brother, James L. Branner Sr. of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pastors James Utt, Jeff May, and Mark Briehl will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rader Lutheran church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

William A. Howe
William A. Howe, 78, of Maloy Drive, Winchester, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Howe was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Bradford, Pa.
He was a driver for Winchester public schools and had been a distributor for Pepperidge Farms products in Winchester until his retirement in 1992.
He was a sergeant in the Medical Corps during World War II.
He was a member of St. Paul’s on the Hill Episcopal Church.
He married Nancy Rogers on Jan. 2, 1946, in Paris, France. Mrs. Howe died July 22, 1967.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith H. Willers of Chicago; two sons, Nathan W. Howe of Winchester and William E. Howe of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Janet Bryant and Winnie Wilson, both of Bradford; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Paul’s on the Hill Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Michael C. Mohn officiating.
