Mary G. Crittenden, 70, of 713 Van Fossen St., Winchester, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Crittenden was born April 13, 1929, in Capon Bridge, W.Va., the daughter of Amos and Jessie Washington Hamilton. She was a member of the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob in Winchester and the Daughters of God and Senior Saints.

She married George E. Crittenden on March 28, 1952, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband, and her mother of Winchester, are four daughters, Marilyn Wilson of Randall, Md., and Margaret Harper, Wanda Jett, and Nancy Grimes, all of Winchester; a son, William Crittenden of Winchester; four sisters, Sandra Fields of Woodstock, and Theresa Chestnut, Elva Reed, and Christella Hamilton, all of Winchester; two brothers, John Hamilton of Winchester and Richard Hamilton of Romney, W.Va.; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A son is deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob in Winchester, with Bishop J. Zerubbabel Terrell and Bishop K. Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be members of the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob.

The family will receive friends one hour before the time of the service at the church.

Charles S. Dunlap Sr.
Charles Sylvester “Fred” Dunlap Sr., 61, of 109 West Whitlock Ave., Winchester, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Dunlap was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Gore, the son of Charlie M. and Edna Mae McDaniel Dunlap. He was a truck driver with Schewell Furniture.

He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge 1283.

He married Katherine Bowley on Sept. 18, 1999, in Winchester. His first wife, Minnie Sue Ritenour Dunlap, died in 1989.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Charles S. Dunlap Jr., Chester Scott Dunlap and Michael Joseph Dunlap, all of Winchester; two daughters, Sherry Susan Andrick of Stephenson and Susie Lynn Lepley of Winchester; a stepdaughter, Misty Tevault of Stephens City; a stepson, Bryan Bowers of Winchester; two sisters, Loretta Mae Lewis of Concord and Hilda Jean Franklin of Stephens City; two brothers, Ronald Edward Dunlap of Frederick County and Richard McDaniel of Winchester; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Potter and the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123 of Winchester.

Pallbearers will be Richard Moyer, Robert Hottle, Howard Miller David Boyce, Darrel Russell, William Martyn, Terry Welch, Daniel Stiltner, Bill Flynn, and Robert Winters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Elwood L. Rush
Elwood Linden Rush, 86, of 93 Ritenour Lane, Maurertown, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Victorian Haven Home for Adults, Elkton.

Mr. Rush was born April 12, 1913, in Edinburg, the son of Jacob Paul and Bessie Bailey Rush. He was a farmer and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation at Toms Brook. He was a former manager of Nichols Orchard in Middletown.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Valley Pike Church of the Brethren and past custodian of the cemetery.

He was married to Ruby Virginia Spiggle.

Surviving are three sons, Donald Ray Rush and Bob Linden Rush, both of Maurertown, and Lacy Dolan Rush of Woodstock; a daughter, Joyce C. Lineweaver of Star Tannery; three sisters, Larue Silcott and Mary Thompson, both of Edinburg, and Lena Ritenour of Woodstock; a brother, William Rush of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Pike Church of the Brethren near Woodstock, with the Rev. Calvin Roop and the Rev. Hardy Lutz officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock.

Mary M. Meeks
Mary Margaret Meeks, 78, of Winchester, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Meeks was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Olan F. and Ruth Marie Shepard Meeks.

She was a member of White Hall United Methodist Church.

She married Oliver L. Meeks on Sept. 19, 1948, in Hyattsville, Md.

Surviving are five sons, Ronald E. Meeks of Prince Frederick, Md. John F. Meeks of Jersey City, N.J., and Jesse W. Meeks Sr., James E. Meeks, and Stanley M. Meeks, all of Winchester; a daughter, Frances E. Brinklow of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a stepdaughter, Madeline Hensley of Fishersville; a sister, Betty Ford Sullivan of Rockville, Md.; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A son, Oliver L. Meeks Jr., a daughter, Beverley Ann Ford Hensley, and a stepdaughter, Hazel Inez Shepard, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Debbie Powell and Roger Powell officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be James E. Meeks, Jesse W. Meeks Jr., Ronald E. Meeks Jr., Kenneth W. Brinklow, Robert F. Hensley Jr., Robert L. Straight, and William S. Carter.

Erma B. Davis
Erma Belle Heironimus Davis, 89, of Greenwood, Morgan County, W.Va., died Friday, March 10, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Houston.

Mrs. Davis was born March 6, 1911, in Frederick County, the daughter of Charles Hutchinson and Betty Olivia Bageant Heironimus. She attended schools in Frederick County and was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church, Unger, W.Va.

She was married to George Herman Davis.

Surviving are a daughter, Wanda D. Place of Houston; a brother, Harry Lee Heironimus of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Glenn F. Stevens Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Grove Cemetery, Unger, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jessie Lee Thornley
Jessie Lee Thornley, 76, of Front Royal, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, in Heritage Hall Health Care Center, Front Royal.

Ms. Thornley was born Nov. 28, 1923, in Delaplane. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Markham.

Surviving are a son, James R. Stringfellow of Bealton; two daughters, Geraldine Gaskins of Front Royal and Mary Stanfield of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, James “Sonny” Thornley, Vernon L. Thornley, and Henry F. Thornley, all of Marshall; three sisters, Gladys V. Ball of Linden, Maria C. Brooks of Front Royal, and Mary L. Gaskins of Arlington; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Gillison Wanser officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Morgantown, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be James E. Thornley, Vernon Thornley Jr., Michael Thornley, James Stringfellow, William Gaskins, Benjamin Thornley, Henry Robinson, and Michael Stanfield.

James I. Boyd
James Ivan Boyd, 66, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Gerrardstown, W.Va., died Friday, March 10, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Boyd was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Gerrardstown, the son of and John Allen and Frances Aikens Boyd. He was retired as a rural mail carrier with the Inwood Post Office and had owned and operated Wiest and Boyd Grocery in Gerrardstown.

He was a member of Ocala West United Methodist Church and had been a lifelong member of Gerrardstown United Methodist Church where he was treasurer for 18 years.

He was a 1951 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He was married to Miriam Wiest for 47 years.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother, are a son, J. Scott Boyd of Gerrardstown; three daughters, Cindy Woods of Martinsburg, W.Va., Lisa Loudan of Gerrardstown, and Melanie Clark of Palm Bay, Fla.; a brother, Paul Boyd of Gerrardstown; three sisters, Janet Boyd and Sharon Boyd, both of Gerrardstown, and Joyce Braithwaite of Inwood; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gerrardstown United Methodist Church, with Dr. Conrad O. Link and the Rev. J. Clyde Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Gerrardstown Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Margie M. Funkhouser
Margie M. Funkhouser 70, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Funkhouser was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Baker, W.Va., the daughter of David M. and Mary Ada Link Earls. She attended the United Brethren Church in Baker, W.Va.

She was married to Wilton Arnold Funkhouser, who died in 1972.

Surviving are a son, Arnold Funkhouser of Wardensville; a daughter, Brenda Ludwig of Wardensville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, W.Va., with Elder Steve Stevenson officiating. Burial will be in Baker Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lewis Paul, Danny Aylor, Andy Rinard, Don Poling, Jimmy Dyer, and Rex Leheigh.

Mabel Lee Heishman
Mabel Lee Heishman, 82, of Front Royal, died Friday, March 10, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. Heishman was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Wardensville, W.Va., the daughter of John and Lucy Dellinger Kaufman. She was a cafeteria manager for Warren County public schools and had retired.

She was married to Edgar W. Heishman.

Surviving are four sons, John W. Heishman and Robert Heishman, both Front Royal, Donald L. Heishman of Bentonville, and Ricci L. Heishman of Linden; a daughter, Evelyn M. Tucker of Hogansville, Ga.; a brother, Lawrence Kaufman of Wardensville, W.Va.; four sisters, Lola Funkhauser of Baker, W.Va., Eufa Sisler of Winchester, and Peg Kerr and Betty Merriman, both of Wardensville; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.

James A. Epperly
James Arnold Epperly, 87, of 3130 Maplelawn Ave., N.W., Roanoke, died Friday, March 10, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Epperly was born April 15, 1912, in Fayetteville, W.Va., the son of Benjamin Franklin and Ada Burnside Epperly. He was a coal miner and carpenter for Minden Coal Co. and had retired.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, with the rank of first class chief petty officer.

He was married to Flora Mae Backus, who died May 31, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Lee Epperly of Roanoke and Raymond D. Epperly of Stephenson; two sisters, Ann Lee Elkins of Oak Hill, W.Va., and Kathleen Williams of Georgia; a brother, Ralph Epperly of West Virginia; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A private service is planned.

Emma L. Pearson
Emma Louise Pearson, 76, of 15 W. North St., Winchester, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Pearson was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Scott County, Ill., the daughter of William Claude and Mary Anna McClain Franklin. She was a member of T.O.P.S.

She was married to Donald C. Pearson on Sept. 29, 1940, in Bowling Green, Mo. Mr. Pearson died June 19, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Donald Cecil Pearson Jr. of Metarie, La., and William E. Pearson of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Celia Annette Hopken of Dallas, Debra L. Shanholtz of Harrisonburg, and C. Darlene Pearson of Winchester; three sisters, Linda Paul, Jane White, and Judy Franklin, all of Winchester; two brothers, Howard Franklin and James Franklin, both of Burlington, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Thomas Schulz, Gary W. Shanholtz Jr., Stephen Shanholtz, Peter VanEvera, Jeff Taylor, Earl Collins, and Kris Pearson.

Phyllis Racey
Phyllis Jean Sutherly Racey, 54, of 127 W. King St., Strasburg, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Racey was born July 31, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil Stump of Toms Brook and Phala Grosche of Vernonia, Ore. She was a CNA and worked at The Home in Woodstock.

Surviving are two daughters, Diane Shirley of Middletown and Bonnie Lutz of Edinburg; three sons, Timothy Sutherly of Front Royal, Anthony Sutherly Sr. of Strasburg, Rusty Sutherly of Lawrenceville; one sister, Dottie Grosche of Vernonia, Ore.; seven grandchildren and her companion John Delinski of Fort Valley.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Sager, Mark Sutherly, Billy Mumaw, Andy Gentile, and Tim Hassler.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Shenandoah Memorial Park with Pastor Larry Miller officiating

June E. Lowery
June E. Lowery, 82, of Hillside Terrace, Winchester, died Friday, March 10, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Lowery was born July 30, 1917, in Sperryville, the daughter of Joseph A. and Myrtle B. Atkins Jenkins. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.

She married John P. Lowery on Oct. 19, 1939, in Kernstown.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Phillip E. Lowery of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Bonnie L. Lanham of Delaware and Barbara A. Grove of Winchester; a sister, Mary V. Stout of Winchester; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Marstellar and the Rev. David Byers officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Streit, Phillip Lee Lowery, David Lanham Jr., Michael Lanham, William Lowery, and Arthur ‘Trip” Ritter III.

Evelyn J. Marchand
Evelyn J. Marchand, 80, of 85 Second St., Whitney, Pa., formerly of Strasburg, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Derry, Pa.

Mrs. Marchand was born March 19, 1919, in Ansonia, Conn., the daughter of Annie McConney and Thomas Walsh Sr. She was a life member of Christ Episcopal Church of Ansonia.

She was married to Wallace Marchand.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Victor Marchand of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three daughters, Jeanne Van Houten of Whitney, Linda Bresknock of Home, Pa., and Martha Marchand of Strasburg; a brother, Thomas Walsh of Ansonia; a sister, Mildred Anderson of Ansonia; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at Hope Methodist Church, Youngstown, Pa.

The family will receive friends this afternoon at the home and from 7 to 9 tonight.

James S. Goode
James Sewell Goode, 82, of Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Winchester and Edwardsville, Ill., died Jan. 26, 2000, in Harlingen.

Mr. Goode was born May 23, 1917, in Snowhill, Md., the son of Minnie McIlwee and the Rev. Sewell Jackson Goode. He was raised in Winchester and was a 1939 graduate of VPI, with a business degree.

He worked for the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C., until 1957 and then joined the Missouri Pacific Railroad in St. Louis. He received his MBA from DePaul University in 1966 and taught Interstate Commerce Law and Transportation Law at SIU and the University of Missouri.

He retired in 1982 from MoPac as director of Marketing Development. He was named the National Transportation Man of the Year.

He was active in the Methodist Church and Harlingen Art Forum and was a teacher’s aide at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church school.

He married Joann Beran in 1997 in Harlingen.

His first wife of 50 years, Frances Trott Goode, died in 1993.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Sally McBee; two sisters, Ruth John of Roanoke and Esther Whitacre of Whitacre; three stepchildren; three grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was Feb. 4, 2000, in Harlingen. A service is planned for a later date in Winchester.

Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1406 East Austin, Harlingen, Texas 78550 or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church School, 1920 East Washington Ave., Harlingen.

Mark S. Wright
Mark Shane “Markie” Wright, 30, of 5241 Main St., Stephens City, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Wright was born Feb. 11, 1970, in Leesburg, the son of Daniel Milton Wright and Ivy Jean Kelly. He was an equipment operator for Judy’s Construction Co. in Middletown.

He was married to Debbie Morgan.

Surviving with his wife, are his father, of Slanesville, W.Va., and his mother, of Alaska; his stepfather, George Baker of Berryville; his stepmother, Annabelle Wright of Slanesville; two sons, Randy L. Wright and Dustin D. Wright, both of Ocean City, Md.; two stepsons, Troy A. Austin and Todd A. Austin, both of Centreville; three brothers, Daniel L. Wright of Springfield, W.Va., Gregory A. Wright of Harrisonburg, and Jeffrey D. Wright of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Margaret J. Moreland of Fairbanks, Alaska; a stepbrother, Christopher E. Meadows of Winchester; and a stepsister, Brandy M. Collins of Romney, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Colonial Funeral Home, Leesburg, with Dr. Ewart Wyle Jr. officiating.
