George H. Dietz III
George H. Dietz III, 57, of Front Royal, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.
Mr. Dietz was born Sept. 16, 1942, in Baltimore, the son of George H. Dietz Jr. and Mary Isabel Arvey Dietz. He was owner of Central Electronics of Front Royal.
He was a member of Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department.
He married Lisa E. Ellett on Sept. 16, 1987.
Surviving with his wife, of Catonsville, and his mother, are a son, George H. Dietz IV of Baltimore; a daughter, Kimberly Ann Dietz Baldridge of Baltimore; three sisters, Barbara L. Flutka, Sherry A. Snader, and Mary Isabel Moore, all of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Witzke Funeral Home, Catonsville. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Smokey Wilson
Smokey Wilson, 71, of Doe Trail, Winchester, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Wilson was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Greene County, Pa., the son of Harry H. and E. Irene King Wilson. He was a supervisor with L.F. Franklin & Sons Construction in Winchester and retired in 1993.
He was a sergeant in the Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge 1283. He was a five-time National Rodeo Champion in the All-Around Cowboy Competition.
He married Mary Jo Musico on July 12, 1971, in Henderson, N.C.
Surviving with his wife, are three daughters, Sharon Lee Mullett, Darlene Feaster, and Joyce Irene Mangus, all of Newark, Ohio; two sons, Kenneth E. Wilson and Kyle Z. Wilson, both of Newark; a sister, Betty E. Sands of Silver Springs, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mausoleum Chapel of Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

Lyle R. Grim Jr.
Lyle R. “Dickie” Grim Jr., 41 of South Cameron Street, Winchester, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Grim was born June 18, 1958, in Winchester, the son of Lyle R. and Connie R. Mathews Grim. He was a machine operator for Ashworth Brothers for more than 20 years.
He was a member of Eagles Aerie 824, the Izaak Walton League and Winchester-Frederick County Conservation Club.
He married Joann M. Ferster on June 7, 1982, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife, and his parents, of Winchester, are a son, Lyle R. “Trae” Grim III at home; a daughter, Ann Marie Grim at home; and two brothers, Jeffrey Allen Grim and Terry L. Grim, both of Winchester.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home, with John R. Kenny Jr. officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Danny Grim, Ronnie Grim, J.D. Cline, Randy Staton, Billy Willis, Duke Welsh, Jerry Mathews, Barry Daugherty, Douglas Madagan Jr., Mike Zebarth, and Roy DeSchon.

Nancy B. Wolfe
Nancy B. Wolfe, 72, of 3905 Shepherds Mill Road, Berryville, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Wolfe was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Richmond, the daughter of Alfred R. and Myrtle Blaney Buckingham.
She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was chairman of the Council on Ministries, Chairman of the Worship Committee, served as president and vice president of the United Methodist Women, was a delegate to the Virginia Methodist Conference, a Sunday school teacher, and served on the district level of the United Methodist Women.
She was a volunteer with Blue Ridge Hospice and the American Red Cross.
She married Cecil Price Wolfe on May 5, 1945, in Winchester. Mr. Wolfe died Feb. 9, 1994.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Reed Wolfe, James Richard “Dickie” Wolfe, and Daniel Blaney Wolfe, all of Berryville; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Duncan Memorial Untied Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold E. Thornton officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Abner Lee
Abner Lee, 75, of 18 W. Clifford St., Winchester, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Lee was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Boyce, the son of Charlotte Grace Lee. He retired in 1989 from Tire Distributors after 20 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member and usher of John Mann United Methodist Church, Daniel J. Farrar Lodge 248, and Davis Williams Post 6044 of the VFW. He was an honorary member of the Hound Dog Club.
He was married to Ida Magruder for 50 years.
Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Page Williams, Ronald “Hawk Eye” Lee, and Michael Lee, all of Winchester; a brother, Robert Lee of Winchester; three sisters, Charlotte Hughes of Washington, D.C., Bessie Lee Gayle of Winchester, and Marah Lee of Maryland; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cartwright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lorenzo Hill Sr. officiating.

Arthur B. Combs
Arthur “Art” B. Combs, 79, of Belleview, Fla., formerly of Winchester, died March 6, 2000, in Ocala Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla.
Mr. Combs was born in Leesburg.
He was a security officer with the Civil Service and an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post 284, both of Belleview.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Helen Combs; three sisters, Mabel May Morton of Potomac, Md., Hazel E. Green of Delaware, and Mildred Canavan of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two brothers, Earnest Combs of Cumberland, Md., and Paul R. Combs of Romney, W.Va.
A funeral was March 9 in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Damon B. Walker and the Rev. Ronald S. Walker officiating. Burial was in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Ralph E. Turner Jr.
Ralph E. Turner Jr., 82, of Butler Avenue, Winchester, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Turner was born June 21, 1917, in Shickshinny, Pa., the son of Ralph E. and Victoria Thomas Turner.
He owned and operated an accounting business, ABS Ltd., from his home, and retired in 1985.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He married Hazel B. Harlan on Aug. 25, 1937, in Arlington.
Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Richard J. Turner and David E. Turner, both of Alexandria.

Mary E. Jones
Mary E. Jones, 79, of Millwood Avenue, Winchester, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Jones was born April 21, 1920, in Gore. She was raised by Margaret K. Harris.
She worked in the housekeeping department of the General Electric plant and retired in 1983.
She was married to William H. Jones.
Surviving are five sons, Leonard Anderson of Purgitsville, W.Va., Vernon Anderson of Seattle, Ernie Anderson of Odessa, Fla., Buzzy Anderson of Lynchburg, and Michael Anderson of Strasburg; four daughters, Alberta Burkholder of Gettysburg, Pa., Cathy Price of Hedgesville, W.Va., Beverly Carter of Stephens City, and Roxanne Carter of Winchester; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Margie Parks and Deborah Swartz, are deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with Dr. Ken S. Smith officiating.

Willard T. Hott
Willard “Bud” Thomas Hott, 69, of Purgitsville, W.Va., died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, W.Va.
Mr. Hott was born Oct. 28, 1930, in Romney, W.Va., the son of Lloyd Thomas Hott and Fannie V. Dean Hott.
He was a heavy equipment operator and had retired.
He was a member of Church of the Brethren in Keyser, W.Va.
Surviving are a brother, Andrew R. Hott of Summersville, S.C.; and a sister, Goldie Wilkins of Purgitsville.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with Pastor Ken Owens officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Cemetery, Romney.

Ruth H. Legg
Ruth Hawes Legg, 78, of Hamilton, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center, Leesburg.
Mrs. Legg was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Philomont, the daughter of William and Sarah Hawes.
She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Hamilton, the G.W.L. Sunday school class, and the United Methodist Women.
She was married to Henry Wilford Legg, who died in 1990.
Surviving are a son, John Henry Legg of Hamilton; two daughters, Barbara Jean Keefer of White Post and Ruth Riggleman of Berryville; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Fern R. Gess
Fern Roomsburg Gess, 74, of HC 71, Box 70, Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Gess was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Loom, W.Va., the daughter of John E. and Lona Moreland Roomsburg. She worked at Shenandoah Apple Co-op in Winchester.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
She married Frank W. Gess on April 22, 1950, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Gess died Dec. 11, 1989.
Surviving is a brother, Ray Roomsburg of Winchester.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, Loom, with the Rev. Patrick Kerr, the Rev. Jack Wardrope, and the Rev. Paul Mateer officiating. Burial will be in Central Church Cemetery.

Jean E. Artz
Jean Elizabeth Artz, 72, of 164 Fox Den Road, Strasburg, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Artz was born April 27, 1927, in Detroit, the daughter of Clarence Luther and Golda Mae Hottle Wisman.
She was a 1944 graduate of Toms Brook High School.
She was a lifelong member of Toms Brook United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was nursery caregiver for more than 50 years. She was church treasurer and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was vice president of Stover Camp Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and docent of Strasburg Museum.
She married Robert Leo Artz on April 11, 1946.
Surviving with her husband, are two daughters, Gloria A. Ryman of Maurertown and Deborah A. French of Edinburg; two sisters, Louise Carter of Kingsville, Md., and Betty McCoy of Toms Brook; and five grandchildren.
A son, Jeffrey Allan Artz, is deceased.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. Paul Phillips officiating.

Helen V. Harris
Helen V. Harris, 86, of 329 Fairview Ave., Winchester, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Harris was born April 17, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the daughter of Mose L. and Mary Burns Turner. She was a member of John Mann United Methodist Church, the Fremont Street Nursery Mother’s Club, and Maggie Farrar Desmond Temple 760.
She was married to Nelson G. Harris for 70 years.
Surviving with her husband, are two daughters, Mary Harris Pendleton of Winchester, Elizabeth Harris-Marshall of Annandale; a son, Nelson G. Harris Jr. of Winchester; three sisters, Betty Cowsen of Philadelphia, Beatrice Champ of Washington, D.C., and Hilda Swann of Winchester; three brothers, Thomas McGill of Philadelphia, and Charles McGill, and Howard McGill, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at John Mann United Methodist Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Lorenzo Hill Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Charles “Buster” Jackson Community Cemetery.

Conway N. Marshall
Conway Norman Marshall, 72, of 154 Sherman Road, Woodstock, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Marshall was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Gordonsville, the son of John Marshall and Georgie Eaton Marshall Hyde. He retired in 1990 from Aileen Co. after 24 years in the finance department.
He was an Army and Navy veteran.
He was a member of Woodstock American Legion Post 199 and Gordonsville Brethren Church.
He was married to Anna Sherman.
Surviving with his wife, are a son, William Allen Marshall of Middletown; three daughters, Molly Ellen Jones of Mt. Jackson, and Anna Irene Pace and Angela Beth Beers, both of Woodstock; a sister, Lucy Wright of Orange; a brother, Archie Marshall of Winchester; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Church of the Brethren, Woodstock.

Kenneth Eugene Meade Sr., 60, of Route 3, Box 5615, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Meade was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Gore, the son of Wiley and Ruby Skeen Meade. He was a timberman and pulpwood cutter and worked for National Fruit Product Co.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Gore.
He married Judith Whitacre on March 10, 1965, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife, are four sons, Kenneth Meade Jr., Jentry Douglas Meade, Evan Kirk Meade, and Travis Jason Meade, all of Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Brady J. Meade of Gore and Jesse Meade of High View, W.Va.; six sisters, Myrtle Fogleman of Bristol, Tenn., Iva Marple and Loretta Shuster, both of Winchester, Mary Kump of Woodstock, Stella Knotts of Staunton, and Mildred Jenkins of Strasburg; and five grandchildren.

Daniel Gaddis Carter, 64, of Front Royal, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Carter was born Nov. 23, 1935, in Hume, the son of Arthur M. and Martha Washington Carter.
Surviving are four brothers, Earl Carter of New Jersey, Jesse Carter of Madison, Samuel Carter of Washington, D.C., and Walden Carter of Front Royal.
A private service is planned.

Steven R. Fletcher
Steven Ray Fletcher, 45, of Pontius Lane, Hagerstown, Md., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown.
Mr. Fletcher was born Dec. 5, 1954, in Winchester, the son of Lewis Milton Fletcher and Gertrude Sargent Fletcher Shelly. He worked for Craig Blacktop Sealing Inc. of Hagerstown. He was a musician and played in local bands.
Surviving with his mother, are two brothers, Roger Fletcher of Cloverdale, Calif., and Lonnie Fletcher of Hedgesville, W.Va.; and his companion, Tammy L. Ware.
