Ruth E. Hook
Ruth E. Perry Hook, 95, formerly of Kinzel Drive, Winchester, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Hook was born Sept. 8, 1904, in Winchester, the daughter of W.O. and Naomi Grim Perry.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She married Carson M. Hook on Aug. 31, 1929, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Hook died Nov. 11, 1987.
She was the last member of her immediate family and is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home, with Pastor Jim Fuller officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service at the funeral home.
Verna H. Wilkes
Verna Howell Wilkes, 98, of Front Royal, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Wilkes was born Sept. 5, 1901, in Bedford County, the daughter of Henry and Texana Creasy Howell. She was a seamstress and worked for Front Royal Quality Shop, Warren Quality Shop, and Frank’s Bell Clothes.
She was a member of Front Royal United Methodist Church and the Naomi Circle.
She was married to John Hammet Wilkes.
Surviving are a daughter, Iris Hines of Front Royal; a son, J.H. Wilkes Jr. of Front Royal; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Chaplain W. D. Barton officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Chrisman, Ronnie Chrisman, Chad Chrisman, Vince Miller, Sammy Campbell, Travis Lamkin, Glenn Wilkes, and Jerry Walker.

William W. Barr Sr.
William Wardell Barr Sr., 60, of 805 S. Kent St., Winchester, and Slanesville, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.
Mr. Barr was born May 8, 1939, in Winchester, the son of William Joseph and Charlotte Singhas Barr. He was a route delivery man for Anderson News, formerly Aramark, of Winchester. He was a member of the Virginia National Guard and attended Greenway Baptist Church.
He married Loretta Moreland on March 22, 1985, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife, and his mother, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va, are four sons, Vernon Barr of Seattle, and Tony Barr, Kyle Barr, and Lyle Barr, all at home; two daughters, Christina Barr and Shannon Barr, both at home; a brother, Kenny Barr of Winchester; two sisters, Mary Cox of Stephenson and Colette Gano of Harpers Ferry; four stepdaughters, Bernice Bushu of Lexington, Ind., Sandra Hott of Winchester, Melissa Ragland of Hancock, Md., and Mary Benner of Hagerstown, Md.; a stepson, Calvin Hott of Inwood, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.
A son, William W. Barr Jr., is deceased.
A funeral will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Kim Robertson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Vonda P. Minor
Vonda P. Minor, 59, of Winchester, formerly of Terra Alta, W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Minor was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Terra Alta, the daughter of Wade R. and Amy Pearl Yost Lewis.
She worked at Winchester Medical Center for 21 years.
She was married to Donald R. Minor.
Surviving with her husband, are two sons, Donald R. Minor Jr. and Daniel C. Minor, both of Winchester; a daughter, Amy Jane Berg of Winchester; two brothers, Lawrence Luke Lewis of Terra Alta, and James W. Lewis of Albright, W.Va.; three sisters, Arlet Lantz of Terra Alta, Gilda Haythorn of Brunswick, Ga., and Ruth C. Lewis of Wellsburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren; and a step grandchild.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, with Barry Kirk officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Kingwood, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Alexander P. Cooley
Alexander Phillip Cooley, 84, of Augusta, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.
Mr. Cooley was born May 11, 1915, in Barnesville, Md., the son of Otho and Lucy Sullivan Cooley. He was a maintenance engineer for Briggs Meats.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving is a daughter, Shirley C. Hardy of Capon Bridge, W.Va.
A memorial service will be at a later date.

A. Elwood Butler
Alan Elwood Butler, 70, formerly of Berkeley County, W.Va., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Canterbury Center, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Mr. Butler was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of Bernard G. and Rebecca Sperow Butler.
He was a farmer and orchardist in Berkeley County and was named, with his brother, Bruce Butler, West Virginia State Conservation winners in 1992 for their farming practices.
He was a 1949 graduate of Hedgesville High School and was in the Army with the military police.
He was a lifelong member of Arden United Methodist Church, where he was an usher, trustee, and member of the administrative board.
He was a member of Hedgesville Lions Club, the United Commercial Travelers, Norbourne Antique Car Club, and the West Virginia Horticulture Society.
He was a 40-year member of Berkeley County Farm Bureau. He was a director of Southern States Cooperative, director emeritus of One Valley Bank, a former director of Old National Bank, and Suburban Bank.
He was deputy sheriff’s civil service commissioner for several terms.
He married Phyllis Puffenberger on Nov. 16, 1957.
Surviving with his wife, are three brothers, Robert S. Butler, B. Bruce Butler, and Carroll D. Butler, all of Martinsburg, W.Va.
A son, Steven Pressley Butler, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Arden United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Walter F. Bowers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

M. Roy Wisecarver, 89, of Clearbrook, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Wisecarver was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Frederick County, the son of Edward Leo and Sallie Ginn Wisecarver.
He retired in 1965 from the former American Viscose Plant in Front Royal.
He was a member of Stephens City United Methodist Church and the Stephens City Lions Club.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Wisecarver of Clearbrook; and a daughter, Milla Sue Wisecarver of Harrisonburg.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. G. Kirk Nave officiating.

Earl L. Mumaw
Earl L. Mumaw, 66, of Mt. Olive Road, Toms Brook, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Mumaw was born March 3, 1933, in Shenandoah County, the son of Guy Franklin and Mary Beeler Mumaw. He worked in construction as an equipment operator. He was a member of Woodstock Moose Lodge 575 and Shenandoah American Legion, Post 199 of Woodstock.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Ann Borden of Winchester and Candace Ritter of White Post; a son, Richard Mumaw of Gore; a stepdaughter, Dawn Sager of Strasburg; a brother, Paul Mumaw of Woodstock; two sisters, Louise Kibler of Strasburg and Jean Conner of Maurertown; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with Pastor Fred Lentz officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg.

Fietta K. Rosenberger
Lt. Col. Fietta K. Rosenberger, Ret., 94, formerly of Winchester, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in the National Lutheran Home, Rockville, Md.
Col. Rosenberger was born Oct. 7, 1905, in Bloom, the daughter of Charles M. and Jeannette Smith Rosenberger. She was a graduate of Handley High School and completed her education in nursing at the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, and the New Haven School of the University of Connecticut.
She was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in 1941. She was a veteran of World War II and served for more than 20 years as a nurse administrator.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, and Church Women United. She was a former vice regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Loudoun Chapter, and a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. James H. Utt and Pastor Jeffrey May officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Frederick County.
Pallbearers will be her nephews: Jack Shipman, Jock Rosenberger, Bob Keiter, Bill Maphis, Roger Milburn, Larry Wadsworth, and Wayne Lee.

Bertha Ivarean Bryan Pierce, 77, of 211 Evening Lane, Winchester, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Pierce was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Simpson, W.Va., the daughter of Daniel Cleveland and Mattie Upton Bland. She was an environmentalist and a member of National Audubon Society and Brooks Bird Club of Wheeling, W.Va..
She had been a parachute rigger in the Navy.
She married Charles Denny Pierce on Aug. 21, 1981, in Cascade, Md.
Surviving are two stepsons, C. Denny Pierce of Strasburg, Pa.; and Everett Hall Pierce of Alexandria; a brother, Dorsey C. Bryan of Knoxville, Mass.; and a grandchild.
A private service is planned.

Charles Denny Pierce Sr., 75, of 211 Evening Lane, Winchester, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Pierce was born May 12, 1924, in New York, N.Y., the son of H. Denny and Evelyn Hall Pierce. He was retired as press director of the Environmental Protection Agency magazine.
He was a graduate of the University of Missouri, with a master’s degree in journalism, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, with the rank of corporal.
He was a member of the National Audubon Society, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Brooks Bird Club, and the Virginia Wilderness Club.
He married Bertha Ivarean Bland Bryan on Aug. 12, 1981, in Cascade, Md.
Surviving are two sons, C. Denny Pierce of Strasburg, Pa., and Everett Hall Pierce of Alexandria; and a grandchild.
A private service is planned.

She was married to Charles William Church for 58 years.

Mr. Steele was born March 6, 1924, in Rossville, Ga., the son of William Steele and Myrtle Viola May Mayberry.
He was retired as a foreman with Ashworth Brothers.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, with the rank of corporal.
He was married to Clara Mae Grubbs, who died Feb. 9, 1996.
Surviving are a son, George L. Steele Jr. of Tampa; a sister, Willie Mae Morrow of Lakeview, Ga.; two brothers, Robert Mayberry and Orville Mayberry; and two grandchildren.

She was married to Charles Preston.

Mrs. Malone was born Aug. 18, 1905, in Winchester, the daughter of Albert L. Martin and Ola Stickley.
She was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.
She was married to Joseph F. Malone. Her first husband was Frank Peacemaker.
Surviving are three children, Ross E. Peacemaker, V. Juanita Carpenter, and Walter Peacemaker; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Edith Alberta Shirley Jones, 79, formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Parrish, Fla.
Mrs. Jones was born July 11, 1920, in Jefferson County, W.Va., the daughter of Charles Russell Shirley and Anna Mazie Canby Shirley.
She retired in 1978 from Corning Glass Works and had worked at Interwoven Mills, Peoples Drug Store, and Perfection Garment Co.
She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Women of the Moose Chapter 78, VFW Chapter 896, and Retirees Club of Corning Glass Works. She was a life member of American Flint Glass.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Elwood Jones of Middleway, W.Va., Garry Dennis Jones of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two daughters, Shirley Ann Hoover of Winchester and Louise Kline of Parrish, Fla.; a sister, Naomi Barrow of Charles Town, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
