John H. Watts
John Henry Watts, 74, of 25 Monroe St., Leesburg, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Watts was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Scott County, the son of William Henry and Maxie Sloan Watts. He was a retired carpenter.

He was married to Mae Bell Murphy.

Surviving are a stepdaughter, Betty Sue Watts of Berryville; three brothers, James Watts of Berryville, Acie Watts of Haymarket, and Donald Bryant of Front Royal; a sister, Elva Pierce of Winchester; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Money & King Vienna Funeral Home, Vienna, with Dr. Dillard Lykins officiating. Burial will be in Flint Hill Cemetery, Oakton.

Pallbearers will be Allen Watts, Melvin Watts, Rockie Watts, Phil Kelly, Frankie Pierce, and Mickey Sales.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Estel L. Riggleman
Estel Lee Riggleman, 65, of 17 N. Water St., Keyser, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.

Mr. Riggleman was born June 21, 1934, at Cabin Run, W.Va., the son of John N. and Pearl Riggleman. He was a retired timberman and worked at Keyser Radiator.

He attended Branch Full Gospel Fellowship, McCoole, Md. He was a social member of Nancy Hanks Post 3518 of the VFW and Moose Lodge 662, both of Keyser.

Surviving are his companion, Evelyn Mae Wines; two brothers, Raymond Riggleman of Romney, W.Va., and Arthur “Frog” Riggleman of Keyser; and two sisters, Kathryn Dennis and Naomi “Snooks” Smeltzer, both of Berryville.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, with the Rev. Ed Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Cabin Run Cemetery, Keyser.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Kenneth J. Winfield Jr.
Kenneth J. Winfield Jr., 77, of Brigstock Road, Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Winfield was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Washington, D.C., the son of Kenneth J. and Clara L. Hudson Winfield. He was retired and had worked at FEMA at Mt. Weather. He had been a manager for Drug Fair and had owned a garden center.

He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary.

Surviving are three sons, Michael L. Winfield of San Jose, Calif., David Winfield of Westford, Vt., and Andrew V. Winfield of Winchester; and a sister, Linda Cowles of Gilroy, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Memorials may be made to the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, P.O. Box 460, Winchester 22604.

Carol A. Gesford
Carol Ann Gesford, 33, of 207 S. Charles St., Strasburg, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Gesford was born Sept. 6, 1966, in Winchester, the daughter of James H. and Nancy Steele Keeler.

She worked at the Front Royal Moose Lodge.

She was a member of The Church at Waterlick and the Women of the Moose of Front Royal.

She was married to Robert Gesford Jr.

Surviving with her husband, are her mother, of Strasburg and her father, of Rileyville; two sons, Brandon Carter and Aaron Carter, both at home; four brothers, Kenneth B. Keeler of Strasburg, and John M. Keeler, Daniel J. Keeler and Jason H. Keeler, all of Rileyville; her maternal grandmother, Virginia Secrist of Lebanon Church; and her paternal grandmother, Frances Keeler of Middletown.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with Pastor Larry K. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Warren County.

Pallbearers will be John Keeler, Daniel Keeler, Randy Carter, Jeff Scott, Danny Scott Jr., and Glenn Michael Vaillancourt.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where a memorial service by the Women of the Moose will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Laden W. Rinard
Laden Wesley Rinard, infant son of Mary Ellen Rinard, 792 Ash St., Strasburg, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.

He was born Feb. 24, 2000, in Winchester.

Surviving with his mother, are a brother, Lucus Ryan Rinard at home; his maternal grandparents, Jack and Ellen Kandill of Toms Brook; and his paternal grandfather, Douglas Rinard of Wardensville, W.Va.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. David Howard officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Gwynneth C. Christian
Gwynneth Covert Christian, 56, of Salem Church Road, Stephens City, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Christian was born April 10, 1943, in Winchester, the daughter of Harold W. and Pearl Covert. She worked in packaging at the AB&C Group in Winchester and was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church.

She married Donald Lee Christian in 1970 in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband, are her mother, Pearl Covert Addison of Winchester; four daughters, Karen Christian Fishel of Staunton, and Lori Christian Hruska, Shelley Christian Robar and Stacey Christian Gillespie, all of Stephens City; two sisters, Cathy Covert Sullivan of Stephens City and Margie Covert Powers of Indiana; a brother, Todd Andrew Covert of Knoxville, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Market Street United Methodist Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Throckmorton Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Salem Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Stephens City.

Pallbearers will be will be Kevin W. Covert, Keith A. Covert, Christopher K. Powers, John D. Christian Jr., Mark W. Fletcher, and Jason S. Fletcher.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City.

Jacob C. McDonald
Jacob Colin McDonald, infant son of Douglas Ray McDonald Jr. and Catina Sager McDonald, of Winchester, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

He was born Feb. 25, 2000, in Charlottesville.

Surviving with his parents, are a sister, Brooke McDonald at home; a brother, Jamie Allen McDonald at home; his paternal grandfather and step grandmother, Douglas Ray McDonald and Barbara Ann McDonald of Stephens City; his paternal grandmother and step grandfather, Kathy Marie Trenary and Rodney Trenary of Charles Town, W.Va.; his maternal grandparents, Aaron B. and Hilda Ann Sager of Stephens City; his paternal great-grandparents, Dennis and Betty Hibbert of Winchester; his paternal great-grandmother, Virginia Andrews of Winchester; and his maternal great-grandmother, Juarez Sager of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Shelvy Mantz officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, Stephens City.

Carmen S. Rohrbaugh
Carmen S. Rohrbaugh, 86, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., formerly of Romney, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Mrs. Rohrbaugh was born March 5, 1913, in Antioch, W.Va., the daughter of Albert and Emma Rotruck.

She was a cook for many years at Burlington Children’s Home. She attended Martinsburg Church of God.

She was married to John Willington Rohrbaugh, who died Feb. 3, 1995.

Surviving are two sons, Loren Rohrbaugh of Alma, Ill., and Robert Rohrbaugh of Grandbury, Texas; two daughters, Pauline Scott of Peoria, Ariz., and Carol Snyder of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Harold Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Thrush Cemetery, Antioch.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ensel M. Clarke
Ensel Marjorie Clarke, 79, of 100 Massanutten Manor, Strasburg, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Clarke was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Newport News, the daughter of Preston and Evelyn Lloyd Mayes. She was retired from the federal government and a member of the Astara faith.

Surviving are two sons, Tom Stratton of Cleveland, and David Sky of Falls Church; a daughter, Dalene Heltzel of Woodstock; a brother, Linwood Mayes of Charles Town, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Harry L. Sherman
Harry Luther Sherman, 82, of 917 Canterburg Road, Stephens City, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Sherman was born March 6, 1917, in Stephens City, the son of Roy L. Sherman and Buelah Virginia Smith Sherman. He was a warehouse transportation specialist for several companies including American Viscose Corp., Yale and Towne, B.F. Goodrich, Eli Lilly, and Westinghouse. He worked for more than 20 years at Combustioneer Corp., Rockville, Md.

After graduating from Stephens City High School in 1937, he attended Roanoke College. He was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Front Royal.

He married Ysabel Koenig Sherman on March 29, 1968 in Arlington.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Sherman is survived by three sons, Derek Sherman, of Minneapolis, Minn., David Stanley, of Ventura, Calif., and Eric Stanley, of Leesburg; two daughters, Noel Sherman, of Alexandria, and Alysa Stanley, of Manassas; three half-brothers, Bob, Frank, and William Sherman; two half-sisters, Virginia Riggleman and Laura Mae Staton; and a granddaughter.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made one’s favorite charity, the Mission to Russia, c/o Archbishop Hurley, 225 Cordova St., Box 2239, Anchorage, Alaska, 99501-2402, or the American Cancer Society, 202 N. Washington St., Winchester, Va. 22601.

Arrangements are being conducted by the Enders and Shirley Funeral Home of Stephens City.

Dorothy C. Farran
Dorothy Collins Farran, 87, of Winchester, formerly of Arlington and Colonial Beach, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Farran was born in Madison, N.C., the daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Miller Peyton.

She worked for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1954 to 1972.

She had worked for the Department of Commerce.

She was a graduate of Eastern High School.

She was married to William A. Farran Sr., who died in 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Sheryl Lilly of Cross Junction; a son, William A. Farran Jr. of Stuarts Draft; a brother, Harry Newman of Silver Hill, Md.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington.

A graveside service will follow in Colonial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Brown G. Riggleman
Brown G. Riggleman, 100, of Green Spring, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Mr. Riggleman was born Aug. 7, 1899, in Moorefield, W.Va., the son of Otis and Alice Wolf Riggleman.

He was affiliated with Green Spring Assembly of God Church.

He was married to Margaret Stotler Kidwell. His first wife, Dale Lee Barr Riggleman, died June 11, 1956.

Surviving with his wife, of Paw Paw, W.Va., are four sons, Loring “Short” Riggleman and Thomas “Tom” Riggleman, both of Berkeley Springs, Troy Riggleman of Marion, Mich., and John Mark Riggleman of Ashboro, N.C.; five daughters, Damie Wratchford of College Park, Md., Bernice Riggleman and Linda Sue Keifer of Green Spring, Neva Wagoner of Wilmington, N.C., and Verna Vorner of Summersville, W.Va.;32 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Olin Riggleman and Freeman “Buck” Riggleman, and a daughter, Joanne Monitt, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with the Rev. Fred F. Parker officiating. Burial will be in New House Cemetery, Rig, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dorothy M. Largent
Dorothy Mae Largent, 68, of Romney, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.

Mrs. Largent was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Three Churches, W.Va., the daughter of Lloyd and Hazel Thomas Nelson.

She was a waitress at Mountain Top Restaurant and retired after 25 years.

She was a member of Levels United Methodist Church.

Surviving with his mother of Romney are three sisters, Helen Bowers of Romney, Barbara Merritt of Ft. Ashby, W.Va., and Frances Moreland of Paw Paw, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Delbert Poling officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Vivan R. Mowry
Vivan Richard Mowry, 84, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Mr. Mowry was born April 7, 1915, in Mozer, W.Va., the son of James Webster Mowry and Mamie Lee Bean Mowry.

He founded V.R. Mowry trucking company in 1933.

He was a member of Petersburg Church of God and the Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was a former member of the Petersburg Town Council.

He was married to Lela Smith for 63 years.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Smith of Petersburg, Patricia Humphreys of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Dorothy Harman of Fairmont, W.Va.; a son, J. Richard “Sonny” Mowry of Petersburg; four sisters, Kathleen Hatfield of Alexandria, Pauline Bryant and Blondena Good of Knoxville, Md., and Vena Zirk of Winchester; a brother, James V. Mowrey of Petersburg; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Howard Ellifritz officiating. Burial will be in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William R. Lee
William Richard Lee, 80, of 380 Millwood Avenue, Winchester, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Lee was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Clarke County, the son of John and Rena Headley Lee.

He was a retired farmer and worked for Voyne Omps.

He was a member of Brucetown United Methodist Church.

Surviving is a sister, Elsie Lee of Winchester; and a brother, Herman Lee of Winchester.

A private service is planned.

Willis J. Porter
Willis James “Butch” Porter, 56, of 227 Woodrow Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Porter was born Aug. 29, 1943, in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of Benjamin Porter and Margaret Rennie Porter Stepanian.

He was a mechanic with Melsur Co. of Bellows Falls, Vt.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as an E-1.

He married Marie Reynolds in 1980 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Surviving with his wife, are his mother of Pittsfield, Mass.; a daughter, Jennifer A. Porter of Kearnesyville, W.Va.; six sons, William J. Porter, James W. Porter, and Benjamin T. Porter, all of Martinsburg, Charles B. Porter of Charles Town, W.Va., and Eric L. Porter and Trevor J. Porter of Calhoun City, Miss.; a sister, Mary Porter of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Winchester National Cemetery, with military honors accorded by VFV Post 123.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home.

Ruth S. Wright
Ruth Sarah Wright, 80, of 206 Custer Ave., Winchester, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Wright was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Rowlesburg, the daughter of Joshua and Feebe Bolyard Calhoun. She was a member of the Rowlesburg United Methodist Church, Rowlesburg, W.Va.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda L. Stemple of Winchester; a son, Robert Wright of Tunnelton, W.Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rowlesburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oakland, Md.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Browning-Burke Funeral Home, Rowlesburg.

Jack G. Stallings
Jack G. Stallings, 75, of 939 Frog Hollow Road, Winchester, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Stallings was born April 18, 1924, in Baltimore, the son of Elias Garner and Flora Messick Stallings.

He worked for the CIA in McLean for 15 years. He was an installer and troubleshooter with C&P Telephone Co. for 35 years and retired in 1981.

He was a gunners mate 1st class in the Navy during World War II.

He attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

He married Marjorie Johnson on Aug. 25, 1946, in Arlington.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Garner Lee Stallings of Bushkill, Pa., and Mark Alan Stallings of Chestertown, Md.; a daughter, Margie Lynn Stallings of Fair Hill, Md.; and a sister, Flora S. Gentry of Irvington.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Stewart officiating.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, c/o Duane Brown, Route 1, Box 97G , Gerrardstown, W.Va. 25420 or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.
