Charles Van Middlesworth Sr.
Charles Nathaniel Van Middlesworth Sr., 76, of Route 2, Falling Waters, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Mr. Middlesworth was born July 17, 1923, in Alexandria, the son of Lester and Hazel Brant Van Middlesworth.
He was retired as a rural letter carrier. He was a Horseman Extrodinaire and owner of Trails End Stables in Falling Waters.
He was in the Army from 1943 to 1946, with the 5th Calvary Brigade, 2nd Calvary Division.
He was a member of the American Cutting Horse Association, American Legion Post 202 in Williamsport, Md., AMVETS, and Moose Lodge 2435 of Funkstown, Md. He was a former member of the Falling Waters Lions Club and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a member of the Catholic Church faith.
He was married to Teresa Patricia Fitz.
Surviving are a brother, Dr. Lester Van Middlesworth of Memphis, Tenn.; 11 children, Dr. Patricia Ann Marstellar of Stone Mountain, Ga., Charles Nathaniel Van Middlesworth Jr., of San Jose, Calif., Lt. Col. David Lester Van Middlesworth, James Wallace Van Middlesworth, and Honore Rose “Honey” Castleman, all of Martinsburg, John Randolph Van Middlesworth and Laura Jeanette Kretzer, both of Falling Waters, Thomas Leo Van Middlesworth of Rockville, Md., Mary Hazel Urias of Winnsboro, S.C., and Teresa Marie Maykrantz of Sterling; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Alfred D. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Marlowe, with military honors accorded by Newton D. Baker Post 896 of the VFW and Berkeley Post 14 of the American Legion.

Dwayne E. Mann
Dwayne Eugene Mann, 49, of 1538 Senseny Road, Winchester, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Clarke County.
Mr. Mann was born July 13, 1950, in Morgan County, W.Va., the son of Albert William and Geneva Kelley Mann.
He was an academic teacher at Grafton School in Rockville, Md., and was a former residential instructor at Grafton School in Clarke County.
He was a Navy veteran.
Surviving are two sisters, Linda M. Rhees of Clearfield, Utah, and Laura L. Cooper of Star Tannery; two brothers, Albert Leroy Mann of Chantilly and Nelson H. Mann of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Arlington National Cemetery.

Tiffani A. Shingleton
Tiffani Alisha Shingleton, infant daughter of Terry L. Shingleton Jr. and Eve Sirk Shingleton, of Augusta, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
She was born was born Feb. 16, 2000.
Surviving with her parents, are her maternal grandparents, Gary and Patricia Sirk of Augusta; her paternal grandparents, Ruby Shingleton of Shanks, W.Va., and Terry Shingleton of Clarke, Colo.; and her maternal great-grandmother, Twila M. Dove of Augusta.
A graveside service will be 3 today in Salem Cemetery, Slanesville, W.Va., with the Rev. Betty Shockey officiating.

Jessie I. Whittington
Jessie Irene Whittington, 93, formerly of Strasburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.
Mrs. Whittington was born Jan. 29, 1907, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Arthur and Oma Mumaw Jenkins. She was a member of Walnut Springs Christian Church.
She was married to James Lee Whittington.
Surviving are two sons, Howard Whittington of Fort Washington, Md., and Ernest Whittington of Strasburg; two daughters, Nancy Ritter of Winchester and Thelma Purdham of Woodstock; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 8 tonight at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Wendell L. Schurtz Jr. officiating.

Phyllis S. Clay
Phyllis Schmitz Clay, 59, formerly of Winchester, died Nov. 20, 1999, in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico.
Mrs. Clay was born July 21, 1940, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Louis and Clara Schmitz. She was self-employed in the tourist industry and had owned several gift shops and a restaurant in Tombstone, Ariz. She retired to San Felipe 10 years ago and was a 1958 graduate of James Wood High School.
She was married to Raymond A. Clay.
Surviving are a daughter, Denise Vaishville of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Scott Clay of Tombstone; a brother, James Schmitz of Brevard, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Shenandoah Memorial Park with Father Dennis Kleinmann officiating.
Blanche J. Fall
Blanche Johnson Fall, 82, of 300 Westminster-Canterbury Drive, Winchester, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Fall was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Canton, N.C., the daughter of Dr. W.C. Johnson and Nancy Rebecca Loftain Johnson.
She was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., and did graduate work at Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU.
She was a member and president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She accompanied her husband, who worked in the chemical industry, on assignments throughout the United States and to Santos, Brazil.
She had worked as a school social worker and had been director of Physical Rehabilitation Services for Lake County, Ohio,
She was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was Sunday school teacher and choir director. She was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Study Club.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Plainesville.
She married James H. Fall Jr. on Sept. 6, 1942, in Canton.
Surviving with her husband, are a daughter, Dr. Dorothy Eleanor Fall of Bluemont; a son, James H. Fall III of Falls Church; a brother, Dr. W.C. Johnson of Auburn, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Banes and Jane Bird, both of Waynesville, N.C.; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home, Canton. Burial will be in Locust Field Cemetery, Canton.

Henry L. Rupp
Henry L. Rupp, 88, of HC 71, Box 127 Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden, N.J.
Mr. Rupp was born June 26, 1911, in Grafton, W.Va., the son of William and Mary Lynch Rupp. He retired in 1972 as an engineer with the B&O Railroad after 30 years.
He was a 1928 graduate of Grafton High School and a 50-year member of Masonic Copestone Chapter 12, R.A.M. in Grafton.
He was married to Elsie Mathias. His first wife, Eleanor Hedrick Rupp, died Sept. 12, 1974.
Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Mary Beth Gross of Haddonfield, N.J.; a brother, Charles Rupp of Darby, Pa.; a sister, Helen Bunner of Grafton; four stepsons, Gerald Mathias of Romney, W.Va., John Mathias of Kirby, W.Va., Monty Mathias of Maitland, Fla., and Wayne Mathias of Stephens City; a stepdaughter, Louise Potter of Augusta, W.Va.; a grandchild; 11 step grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and five step great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Nora Linda Rupp, is deceased.

May Anna Dodson Atkins, 86, of Flint Hill, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Warrenton Overlook, Warrenton.
Mrs. Atkins was born April 22, 1913, the daughter of Jakanise Buchannan Dodson II and Annie Maude Atkins Dodson. She was a lifelong member of Beech Springs Baptist Church of Sperryville.
She was married to Elmer Jackson Atkins.
Surviving are four daughters, Rethula Beery of Harrisonburg, Elizabeth Clatterbuck of Front Royal, Elanor Beverage of Front Royal, and Nancy Noakes of Flint Hill; a sister, Virginia Gochenour of Luray; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Hillard Tharp and Wayne Jackson Atkins, are deceased.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Washington Masonic Cemetery, with Elder E. Wayne Thompson officiating.

Roger E. Wiley
Roger E. “Hoghead” Wiley, 55, of 1405-32 Front Royal Pike, Winchester, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Wiley was born Sept. 5, 1944, in Winchester, the son of Hugh and Sally Cave Wiley. He worked at McElroy Metal as a Level B accessory technician.
He was a member of Full Gospel Lighthouse Church in Stephens City.
He married Judy Thompson on June 8, 1991, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife, are three stepsons, Daniel Edward Fahnestock of Winchester, Billy Wayne Church of Tucson, Ariz., and David Allen Church of Martinsburg, W.Va; and a sister, Joyce Fraley of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
A stepson, Philip Ray Church, is deceased.

Rosa Collins Wolford, 96, of Winchester, formerly of Augusta, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.
Mrs. Wolford was born April 23, 1903, in Alleghany County, Md., the daughter of Barton H. and Minnie Rae Hott Collins.
She was a member of Hott’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Kirby, W.Va.
She was married to Elmer Roy Wolford, who died Sept. 7, 1960.
Surviving are a son, Guy W. Wolford of Winchester; three daughters, Mildred M. Johnson of Fort Collins, Colo., Blanche E. Hahn of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Thelma G. Stokes of Winchester; a brother, Thurston B. Collins of Inwood, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Hazel Mae Wolford, is deceased.

Lucy E. Custer
Lucy Ellen “Tide” Custer, 85 of 300 Westminster-Canterbury Drive, Winchester, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Westminster-Canterbury.
Mrs. Custer was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the daughter of Rex McNaughton and Ethel Fisher Lamb. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Altar Guild, and volunteered at the Treasure Box at the church. She was past president of the Women's Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the Winchester Medical Center. She was on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and the William and Henry Evans Children’s Home. She was past chairperson of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Queen and Court Committee for may years. She was a member of the Little Garden Club and the Century Club. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts and was a former Cub Scout den mother.
She was a graduate of Columbus School for Girls and earned a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College. She and her husband were supporters of Shenandoah University and helped to establish the Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing. They were instrumental in the preservation of the old John Kerr School building, now the Gallagher Community Arts Building. They were supporters of the Free Medical Clinic.
She married Dr. Monford Custer Jr. on June 18, 1938, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Dr. Custer died Nov. 23, 1989.
Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Morgan of Granada Hills, Calif., Susan Sanders of Savannah, Ga., and Linda Russell of Winchester; a son, Dr. Monford D. Custer III of Temple, Texas; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Douglas McCaleb officiating. Burial will be private in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Louise W. Kellas, 78, of Longview Drive, Winchester, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Winchester.
Mrs. Kellas was born Oct. 5, 1921, in Winchester, the daughter of Clifton and Mabel Owens Wilson.
She retired in 1953 as bookkeeper for the Winchester Feed & Seed Co.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Circle 3, Florence Nightingale Sunday School class, and former secretary of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Federation of the Blind and Amy’s Kitchen Band.
She married Robert N. Kellas on Dec. 3, 1947, in Winchester.
Surviving are a son, Robert N. Kellas Jr. of Manassas; a daughter, Sharon K. Snapp of Winchester; a brother, Clifton Wilson Jr. of Winchester; a sister, Winnie DeHaven of Hagerstown, Md.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David R. Burrough officiating.

Yvonne M. Shipe, 70, of Blythewood, S.C., formerly of Romney, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the home of her son in Blythewood.
Mrs. Shipe was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Strasburg, the daughter of Carl McWilliams and Gladys McInturff McWilliams Putnam.
She retired after many years as a bookkeeper and telephone receptionist at the First National Bank of Romney.
She was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church
She was married to Arthur Gladstone Shipe, who died May 12, 1977.
Surviving are a son, Arthur Gladstone Shipe Jr. of Blythewood; two granddaughters; and a grandson.

Frank Cartin
Frank E. Cartin, 89, of 110 Chalmers Court, Berryville, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mr. Cartin was born Sept. 9, 1910, in Philadelphia, the son of John and Florence Taylor Cartin. He had worked as an office machines repairman. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Surviving is a niece, Harriet Everitt of Philadelphia.

Irene F. Thompson
Irene Frances Kirkpatrick Thompson, 71, of Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Thompson was born March 30, 1928, in Maryland Heights, Mo., the daughter of Clyde G. and Cassa Emerson Kirkpatrick. She was an Army wife and accompanied her husband to Germany, West Berlin, and the Far East. She made three trips behind the Berlin Wall and was awarded the Knight’s Cross by Prince Robert Von Brancovan.
She married the Rev. Parker C. Thompson on May 15, 1951.
Surviving with her husband, are three children, Mary V. Bates of Alexandria, Robert A. Thompson of Stephens City, and Laura E. Pennington of Middletown.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Fork Baptist Church, Purcellville, with the Rev. Arthur DeCourcey officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Foster L. Judy
Foster L. Judy, 79, of Judy Road, Bedford, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Judy was born July 25, 1920, in Colerain Township, Pa., the son of John W. and Emma Sites Sherman Judy.
He was a licensed commercial pilot and owned and operated Judy’s Body Shop in Bedford for more than 50 years.
He was a 1938 graduate of Bedford High School and Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford Masonic Lodge 320, R&AM, Harrisburg Consistory, and Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, Pa.
He married Mildred Wilson on Feb. 27, 1959, in Bedford.
Surviving with his wife, are three children Ronald Lee Judy of Bedford, Nancy Jean Stern of Winchester, and Shirley Jean Judy of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Mary Judy Weaverling of Bedford; and three grandsons.
An infant son, Richard Judy, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford, with Sister Anna Mary Renfrew officiating. Burial will be in Ritchey Cemetery, with full military honors by Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
