The Rev. Roy Vernon
The Rev. Roy Clifton Vernon, 88, of Westminster-Canterbury, Winchester, formerly of Shenstone Farm, Summit Point, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
The Rev. Vernon was born Feb. 23, 1913, in Atwood, Kan., the son of Clifton Everett and Cora Ramey Vernon.
He was a graduate of Everett High School, Everett, Kan. He earned a BS degree in education in 1945 from the University of Southern Illinois and a Master of Divinity degree in 1950 from Wesley Seminary, Washington, D.C.
In 1939, he began his ministerial career and served in the Illinois and Peninsula conferences. In 1950, he was ordained as an elder in the Methodist Church and then served in the Virginia and New England conferences.
In 1963, he was director of Christian activities and taught at Sue Bennett College, Loudon, Ky.
He retired in 1978 from the Virginia Conference.
He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.
He married Christine Snyder on Oct. 1, 1953.
His wife survives.
A daughter, Margaret Bell Vernon, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Dawson and the Rev. Daniel Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, W.Va.

John T. Mitchell III
John Terrill Mitchell III, 55, of Berryville, died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Woodbridge, N.J.
Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Jay T. and Betty Lou Fike Mitchell. He was a manufacturing business consultant and worked for Abex in New Jersey, Illinois, and Virginia for 25 years.
He earned undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
He had been a sergeant in the Army.
He was active in the Boy Scouts for more than 30 years. He was a former scout master and committee chairman for Troop 2. He received the Shawnee District Boy Scout Leader of the Year Award in 1991 and the District Merit Award in 1992.
He had been active in scouting in the Skokie Valley District in Illinois and the South Mountain District in New Jersey.
He assisted the John H. Enders Fire and Rescue Company with Y2K compliance and readiness.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the McFadden Bible Class. He was a former member of the Session of the Prospect Presbyterian Church in Maplewood, N.J.
He and his wife, Pamela C. Mitchell, married on July 9, 1977, in Maplewood.
Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Morris Plains, N.J., are three sons, Stephen Blaiklock of Williamsburg, David Blaiklock of Charlottesville, and John Thomas Mitchell of Berryville; and a sister, Judy Mitchell of Morris Plains.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Dr. Dan McCoig officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors accorded by the Winchester VFW.
Pallbearers will be Tom Janus, Roy Walker, Tom MacCubbin, Jim Webb, Ken Thomas, Dick Hendrix, and Donald Dick.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Elizabeth E. Chamblin
Elizabeth Elaine Chamblin, 84, of Middleburg, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Loudoun Hospital Center, Leesburg.
Mrs. Chamblin was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Loudoun County, the daughter of Emmitt Hunter and Mary Kempshell Sutphin. She had been a retail clerk and was a member of Middleburg United Methodist Church.
She was married to Newton Chamblin.
Surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Pearson of Stephens City and Alice Gregg of Warrenton.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Middleburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Louis James Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Middleburg Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Conway Jenkins, Vance Thompson, Calvin Marcey, Tim Marcey, Bill Sutphin, and Mike Rector.

Harold Lee Bingham
Harold Lee “Joe” Bingham, 64, of Rio, W.Va., died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Bingham was born July 22, 1936, in Macon County, N.C., the son of Clyde F. Bingham and Gertrude Holcombe. He was a meat cutter and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of the Southern Baptist faith.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, Clyde and Marjorie Bingham of Franklin, N.C.; and two brothers, Clyde Bingham Jr. of Auburn, Wash., and Ervin A. Bingham of Alexandria.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with Pastor Robert Jeffreys officiating. Burial will be private.
Mamie M. Henry
Mamie May Kipps Henry, 76, of Whitacre, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Henry was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Oscar and Sarah Funkhouser Kipps. She had worked at the former Doubleday Co. in Berryville.
She was married to Leo “Echimo” Henry.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Lee Henry of Whitacre; a daughter, Peggy Ellen Clinedinst of Edinburg; two sisters, Hazel Chandler of Florida and Florence Chateauneuf of Stephens City; two brothers, Lester Kipps of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Cecil Kipps of Edinburg; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock, with Pastor Darrell Waller officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock.

James H. Coberly
James Harold “Jim” Coberly, 92, of 886 McDonald Road, Winchester, died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Coberly was born Aug. 12, 1908, in Elkins, W.Va., the son of Otto Glenn and Ruth Maud Hettener Coberly. He was a professor of American literature at George Washington University from 1945 to 1975, when he retired.
He was a graduate of George Washington University, with a master’s degree, and a member of the Alumni Association.
He was a sergeant major in the Army during World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal.
He married Jocelyn Lula Woodward on Dec. 21, 1949, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Coberly died March 20, 1997.
Surviving are a son, Anthony Ross Coberly of Winchester; a daughter, Sally Coberly Callan of Richmond; three grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.
A private service is planned.

John Henry Brown
John Henry Brown, 63, of P.O. Box 404, Berryville, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Brown was born Sept. 19, 1937, in Berryville, the son of Nelson and Hilda Robinson Brown. He was a maintenance worker and an Air Force veteran.
He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, the Men’s Chorus, and the Senior Choir.
His was formerly married to Irene Beamon.
Surviving with his former wife are two sons, Warren Brown and Nkosi Yafeu, also known as Anthony Brown, both of Washington, D.C.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. James Scott officiating. Burial will be in Milton Valley Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors accorded by the Clarke County Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be John “Sonny” Brown, Albert Jones, Paul Jones, Otis Harper, Steve Washington, and Allan McWilliams.

Dessie Lee Roles
Dessie Lee Roles, 72, of 1024 N. Braddock St., Winchester, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Roles was born May 13, 1928, in Loudoun County, the daughter of Hiram Robert and Annie V. Hurt Sisk. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.
She married Hilton Clyde Roles on Jan. 22, 1958, in Madison County.
Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Linda Jenkins of Culpeper and Janice Wright of Winchester; a son, Randy Roles of Purcellville; three sisters, Lula Roles of Front Royal, Mary Robey of North Carolina, and Dorothy Cockrell of Ocean City, Md.; two brothers, Harry Sisk of Ferrum and Odell Sisk of Manassas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with David A. Owings officiating. Burial will be in Culpeper National Cemetery.

Tonina Ambrogi
Tonina Ambrogi, 104, of Winchester, died Friday, March 9, 2001, in Hillcrest Nursing Home.
Mrs. Ambrogi was born June 16, 1896, in Bovelglio, Italy. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
She came to America in 1917 and married Biagio Ambrogi in 1920.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Ambrogi of Winchester; four daughters, Margaret Teates of Winchester, Lillian Lewis of Pensacola, Fla., Maria Ricciuti of Columbia, Md., and Gloria Maltagliati of Centreville; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Silver Spring, Md. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Aspen Hill, Md.

Ralph Lee Carty
Ralph Lee Carty, 53, of Crest Circle, Winchester, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Carty was born April 27, 1947, in Pleasant Valley, N.J., the son of George and Dorothy Hopf Carty. He was district manager of Lowe’s of Winchester.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He and his wife, Judy E. Carty, were married June 1, 1968, in Absecon, N.J.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Kristofer Lee Carty of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Tina Elizabeth Carty of Winchester; a brother, Ronald Carty of New Jersey; and a sister, Judy DeRosa of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home.

Asa W. Smith
Asa W. Smith, 89, of Rosewood Lane, Winchester, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Smith was born June 13, 1911, in Etlan, the son of Oscar and Lelia Donald Smith. He worked part-time at Glen Bernie for 20 years. He had retired in 1976 after 16 years with Shockey Brothers and had previously worked for O’Sullivan Corp. for 29 years.
He was a member of Opequon Presbyterian Church for 58 years and a member of the Isaak Walton League.
He married Frances Doores on Oct. 21, 1933, in Rockville, Md.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Bobby L. Smith of Cross Junction; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Opequon Presbyterian Church, with Pastor David Witt and Dr. Art Stanley officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be James Jenkins, Janice Jenkins, Charles Praigg, Scott Gittman, Eugene Clem, and Linwood Donald.
