A. Cordelia Fahnestock
A. Cordelia Fahnestock, 83, of 112 Forest Drive, Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Mrs. Fahnestock was born April 11, 1916, in Berkeley County, the daughter of Ulysses Grant and Laura DeHaven Luttrell. She retired as a seamstress after 11 years with Aileen Factory of Woodstock.

She was a member of Calvary Church of the Brethren, where she was formerly a Sunday school teacher and active in the Women’s Fellowship.

She married Randolph C. Fahnestock on Nov. 28, 1936, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband, are two sons, Carl R. Fahnestock of Kissimmee, Fla., and Garland W. Fahnestock of Winchester; a daughter, Marjorie A. Zeigler of Winchester; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clarence R. Davis Jr. and the Rev. J. Floyd Wine officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Front Royal.

Pallbearers will be Carl Fahnestock, Garland Fahnestock, David Lowery, Allan LaFollette, Robert Weber, and Elton Fahnestock.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gerald D. Sinclair Sr.
Gerald Davis Sinclair Sr., 58, of 829 W. 15th St., Front Royal, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Sinclair was born Oct. 31, 1941, in Strasburg, the son of Clinton Davis Sinclair and Nora Wagoner Sinclair Pierce. He retired after 25 years as a systems technician with Bell Atlantic in Northern Virginia and had been a sales associate of Sears since 1993.

He was an Army veteran.

He was married to Rebecca Ann Sain.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother of Glen Rock, Pa., are two sons, Gerald Davis Sinclair Jr. of Middletown and Timothy Michael Mendenhall of Front Royal; two daughters, Lelona Maria Stronzik of Stephenson and Liza Mendenhall of Front Royal; a sister, Shirley Carbaugh of Glen Rock; a brother, Michael Sinclair of Bracey; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens Warren County, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

Pallbearers will be Davy Sinclair, Timmy Mendenhall, Kenneth Jackson, William Carbaugh, Leroy Henry, and Amos Orndorff.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Viola M. Hilliard
Viola M. Hilliard, 86, of White Oak Road, White Post, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Mrs. Hilliard was born Dec. 24, 1913, in Kernstown, the daughter of William R. and Dora Keckley Strosnider. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She married Joseph W. Hilliard on Aug. 7, 1939. Mr. Hilliard is deceased.

Surviving are a sister, Nellie Patterson of Winchester; and two brothers, Edward W. Strosnider of Boyce and Holmes P. Strosnider of White Post.

A son, Billy James, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Jones Funeral Home, with L. John Bost officiating. Burial will be in Gainesboro Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Edward Strosnider Jr., Gilbert Strosnider, Carl Strosnider, and Freddy McDaniel.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Blanche H. Rodgers
Blanche H. Rodgers, 67, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Rodgers was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Front Royal, the daughter of James Edwin and Edith Mills Hickerson. She was retired as primary secretary of District 11, Virginia Probation and Parole office in Front Royal.

She was a graduate of Roller Business College.

She was a member of Front Royal United Methodist Church and the Warren County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was married to Robert M. Rodgers. Her first husband was Earl H. Walton Jr.

Surviving are a son, Charles Daniel Walton of Sterling; and a grandson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Cynthia Corley officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.

Pallbearers will be Nelson Hickerson, Basil Hickerson, Glenn Hickerson, Michael Spory, David Curro, and David Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Joseph H. Brill
Joseph Henry Brill, 73, of 7060 Zepp Road, Star Tannery, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mr. Brill was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Star Tannery, the son of Raymond Carr and Blanche Rebecca Rudolph Brill. He was retired from Blue Bell Corp. and Winchester Medical Center.

Surviving are two brothers, Doman Brill of Star Tannery and Dalton Brill of Winchester; and a sister, Yvonne Brill Muncy of Columbia, Md.

A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. William H. Hall II officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Star Tannery.

Pallbearers will be Marshall Wilborn, Larry Burracker, Earnest Graves, Vince Jimeninez, Bob Hosaflook, and John Halterman.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

William C. Heward Sr.
William Charles Heward Sr., 58, of Romney, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Heward was born Nov. 4, 1941, in Baltimore, the son of Rudolph T. and Mary C. M. Lang Heward. He worked for McLean’s Construction in Baltimore.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Heward; eight sons, William C. Heward Jr. of Damascus, Edward E. Heward, John D. Heward Sr., Rudolph S. Heward, William C. Heward III, and Charles W. Heward, all of Romney, James A. Heward of Lansdowne, Md., and Michael L. Heward of St. Mary’s, W.Va.; a daughter, Joni L. Heward at home; a brother, Thomas A. Heward of Winslow, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home, Glen Burnie, Md., with the Rev. Chris Rallston officiating. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery, Glen Burnie, Md.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, and from 7 to 9 Friday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 Saturday and Sunday at Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jack Kerns
The Rev. Jack Kerns, 89, of 903 Bloomery Pike, Whitacre, died Jan. 12, 2000, at his home.

The Rev. Kerns was born Oct. 26, 1910, in Bloomery, W.Va., the son of Earl and Mary Agnus Abrell Kerns. He was a retired minister of Faith Temple in Whitacre.

He was married to Bessie Cunningham. His first wife was Hazel Cowgill Kerns. His second wife was Rosella Pappas Kerns, who died April 7, 1963.

Surviving with his wife, are four sons, Hartley Kerns of Whitacre, and Donald Kerns, Lynn Kerns, and Brandon “Jackie” Kerns, all of Winchester; a daughter, Mildred Vanderweger of Oklahoma; two brothers, Frank Kerns of Homestead, Fla., and Warren Kerns of Paw Paw, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; 28 great- grandchildren; and a great-great- grandchild.

A funeral was Jan. 15, 2000, in Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Elizabeth Frye and the Rev. Allen Martin officiating.

Arvella V. Butcher
Arvella Virginia Butcher, 74, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Butcher was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Jefferson County, W.Va., the daughter of Nathan Y. and Elma Kerns Shirley. She was retired from Corning Glass and had worked at the Interwoven Mills.

She was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and the Golden Rule Sunday School Class 21.

She was a member of AARP, EGO at City Hospital, Martinsburg, and the Corning Glass Retirees.

She was married to George P. Butcher .

Surviving are two sons, George Paul Butcher Jr. and Rodger E. Butcher, both of Martinsburg; two brothers, Kenneth D. Shirley of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Harrison W. Shirley of Winchester; two sisters, Dolly V. Cole of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Martha M. Pitzer of Clearbrook; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Arlene R. Carr officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles E. Smith Jr.
Charles E. “Smitty” Smith Jr., 73, of Front Royal Pike, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Winchester, the son of Charles E. and Margaret Dorton Smith. He retired in 1991 from Henkel-Harris Co. as assistant foreman of maintenance. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, with the rank of seaman second class.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

He married Geraldine Hockensmith on Aug. 1, 1958, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, are his stepmother, Theida Fox Smith of Front Royal; a son, Bruce C. Smith of Winchester; a stepson, Norman L. Bayliss of Frederick County; a sister, Marjorie S. Coulson of Winchester; a half sister, Debra S. Szablek of Richmond; a brother, Franklin Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three half brothers, John G. Smith and Calvin R. Smith, both of Front Royal, and Jacque Smith of Port Republic, Md.; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. L. Paul Song and the Rev. Dr. William N. Wade officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123 of Winchester.

Pallbearers will be Bruce C . Smith II, Norman Bayliss III, Edward L. Willis, Charles D. Anderson, Thomas E. Dorton Jr., Wilson Coulson, Joshua L. Smith, and Kevin J. Bayliss.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ksenia Petrow
Ksenia Petrow, 86, of White Post, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. Petrow was born Feb. 13, 1913, in Odessa, Ukraine.

She was married to Nicholai Petrow.

Surviving are two sons, Boris Petrow of Front Royal and Waldimire Petrow of Selden, N.Y.

A private service is planned.

Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, is handling arrangements.

Clark A. Bly
Clark Alvin Bly, 74, of 881 Green Acre Drive, Strasburg, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Bly was born June 3, 1925, in Shenandoah County, the son of Frank and Minnie Alice Strosnider Bly. He was a carpenter with Moore Brother’s Co. and had retired. He was in the 3rd Army with General Patton in Europe and served four years in the Air Force Reserve.

He was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical & Reform Church of Fisher’s Hill and Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

His wife, Virginia R. Bly, is deceased.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. Dan Locke officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

Friends may call anytime Tuesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Memorials may be made to Strasburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 105, Strasburg 22657, or to Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, 157 E. Washington St., Strasburg.

Vernon B. Catlett Sr.
Vernon B. Catlett Sr., 75, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Mr. Catlett was born April 28, 1924, in Whitacre, the son of Orie Catlett and Ada Catlett Crim. He retired from the Navy after serving 21 years and from the Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he worked in law enforcement. He was a member of Robert White Lodge No. 67 A.F.&A.M. and York Rite Lebanon Chapter No. 2 R.A.M.

He was married to Martha Catlett, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Vernon B. Catlett Jr. and Curtis A. Catlett, both of Martinsburg; a step-daughter, Francine Abney of North Carolina; four half-sisters, Wilda Ferrebee, Eleanor Carter, and Nancy Catlett, all of Winchester, and Betty Bender; a brother, Todd J. Catlett; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

His stepfather, Bruce Crim, is deceased.

A funeral was held at 11 this morning at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Eddie H. Edmonds officiating. Entombment was in the Rosedale Cemetery mausoleum.

Flora V. Davis
Flora Virginia Shane Davis, 87, of Chestnut Grove Road, Winchester, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Davis was born March 30, 1912, in Nain, the daughter of William and Myrtle Ivy Dollard Shane. She was a member of Gainesboro United Methodist Church and the Home Extension Club. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

She was married to Joseph Nathaniel Davis.

Surviving with her husband, are three sons, Joseph N. Davis Jr. of Gainesboro, Robert Davis of Great Cacapon, W.Va., and William Davis of Schockeysville; three daughters, Pauline DeHaven of Gainesboro, Viola Palmer of Gainesboro, and Esther Fore of Roanoke; 27 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. William R. Withers and the Rev. Cletus Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Gainesboro Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry DeHaven, Gary Palmer, Jake Davis, Robert Lee Davis Jr., Michael Palmer, and Terry DeHaven.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
