Robert G. Lenderking
Robert George Lenderking, 88, of Front Royal, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Lenderking was born March 3, 1911, in Baltimore, the son of Charles Emil and Etta Reid Lenderking. He was a retired engineer technician with the Navy’s David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, Md. He attended the Maryland Institute in Baltimore and moved to Browntown in 1973. Mr. Lenderking was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Browntown Baptist Church.

He was married to Audrey Brinkley Lenderking.

Surviving are a son R. Michael Lenderking of Sterling; a daughter, Jane L. Talbott of Baltimore; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service in Prospect Hill Cemetery will be private.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Browntown Baptist Church c/o Ann Partlow, 129 Elsia Drive, Front Royal 22630.

James W. Martin
James Wallace Martin, 88, of Romney, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Martin was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Morgan County, W.Va., the son of Charles Judson and Christine Moreland Martin.

He worked for many years as an orchardist with Ewers Orchard in Romney, W.Va.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Martha Susan Lewis Martin; three step grandchildren; and a step great-grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, W.Va., with the Rev. Norman Landis and the Rev. Frank Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Branch Mt. Cemetery, Three Churches, W.Va.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Branch Mt. Cemetery, c/o Ella Mae Frye, 510 2nd Ave., Romney, W.Va. 26757.

L. Virginia Owens
L. Virginia Owens, 79, of 435 N. Water St., Woodstock, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Owens was born March 11, 1920, in Delaplane, the daughter of James W. and Hazel Feltner Ellyett. She was a waitress for 45 years, working mostly at the Flagship Restaurant in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Massanutten Senior Citizens Bowling League and attended Grace Baptist Church. She was married to Ernest Owens.

Surviving are three sons, Ronnie Owens of Winchester, and Mike Owens and Greg Owens, both of Edinburg; two daughters, Ernestine Otting of Sarasota, Fla., and Barbara Wells of Woodstock; two sisters, Louise Dick of Winchester and Marguerite Pearson of Clifton; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

An infant son, Kenneth Wayne Owens, is deceased.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Ralph Feltner and the Rev. Cliff Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Revard, Kenny Owens, Chris Wells, Josh Ross, Ryan Ross, and Justin Wells.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Charlotte E. Palmer
Charlotte Elizabeth Palmer, 81, of 383 Junction Road, Strasburg, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Palmer was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Zepp, the daughter of Buryl and Grace Strosnider Lineweaver.

She was married to Stanley B. Palmer.

Surviving with her husband, are three daughters, Shirley A. Sherman, Dorothy “Dot” Wilson, and Linda K. Golliday, all of Strasburg; a brother, Wilbur Lineweaver of Winchester; a sister, Glenna Ewing of Stephens City; two half brothers, Larry Lineweaver of Front Royal, and Gary Lineweaver of Winchester; a half sister, Mary Simpson of Front Royal; a stepbrother, Pearlie Brill of Strasburg; and four stepsisters, Ruth Brill and Ann McNealy of Front Royal, Kay Lam of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jean Brooks of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, with the Rev. David Howard officiating.

Pallbearers will be Roger Sherman, Steve Sherman, Terry Sherman, Blaine Wilson, Tony Wilson, and Leslie Golliday.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Ruth D. Sours
Ruth Dofflemyer Sours, 89, of 12483 Lord Fairfax Highway, Boyce, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Sours was born Sept. 5, 1910, in Page County, the daughter of Ashby Kemper Dofflemyer and Mary Ruffner Dofflemyer. She retired after 27 years with American Viscose Corp., Front Royal, and was a member of Berryville Baptist Church.

She married Clarke E. Sours on Feb. 10, 1930, in Rockville, Md. Mr. Sours died Oct. 9, 1998.

Surviving are four sons, Nelson C. Sours of Camp Springs, Md., Wayne A. Sours of Stephens City, Dale E. Sours of Boyce, and Ronnie L. Sours of Shawneeland; a sister, Sybil D. Baker of Berryville; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Berryville Baptist Church with the Rev. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Baker Jr., Denis Foltz, Thomas Dofflemyer Jr., George Dofflemyer Jr., Alan Offenbacker, and Dean Dofflemyer.

The family will receive friends between 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Robert L. Thompson Jr.
Robert Lee “Bob” Thompson Jr., 56, of 511 Western Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was born Jan. 30, 1943, in Richmond, the son of Robert Lee Thompson Sr. and Reba Worley DiGiulio. He was a self-employed painter and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Martinsburg.

Surviving are a daughter, Traci Michelle Thompson of Clinton, Md.; three sons, Robert Walter Thompson of Baltimore, and Mickey Lee Thompson and Robert James Thompson, both of Martinsburg; and three grandchildren.

A private service will be held.

Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home.

William E. White
William E. White, 67, of Grace Street, Winchester, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. White was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Winchester, the son of Frederick E. White Sr., and Helen Perry White.

He was a construction worker with L.F. Franklin Construction Co., and a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 824 and the Berryville Moose. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955.

He married Winnie Welsh on Dec. 22, 1953, in Hagerstown, Md.

In addition to his wife, Mr. White is survived by his mother, Helen Perry Todd of Winchester; a daughter, Susan W. Lockridge, of Winchester; a brother, Frederick E. White Jr., of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

A daughter Teresa Lynn White is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Garland White, John White, Robert Foreman, Richard Whitacre, Bill Stinson, and Lawrence “Red” Shade.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Raymond R. Knight
Raymond Richard Knight, 74, of Winchester died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Knight was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Everman, Texas, the son of James Vernon and Myrtle Halford Knight. He had been a part-time employee of Boscawen Gold and Silver and was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded three purple hearts and two bronze stars.

He married Maxine Wilson in Tijuana, Mexico, on June 25, 1951.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Ronald Wert Knight of Bangor, Maine, and Robert Wilson Knight of Greencastle, Pa.; three daughters, Susan Jane Clifton of Lancaster, Calif., Patricia Ann Fitzwater of Winchester, and Nancy Dinardo of Latrobe, Pa., a brother, Bob Knight of New Orleans; four sisters, Irene Knox of Dallas, Totsie Williams and Thelma Hanna, both of Burleson, Texas, and Mabel Covey of Snyder, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ron Potter officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 525, Winchester 22601.

Nellie A. Moore
Nellie A. Moore, 85, of Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Boyce.

Mrs. Moore was born June 6, 1914, in Matoaka, W.Va., the daughter of Edward Isaiah and Ellen Canzady Radford Gillespie.

She married Erble M. Moore on Jan. 18, 1936, in Radford.

Surviving with her husband, are three sons, Ray Moore of Manassas, Larry Moore of Front Royal, and Lane Moore of Elliston; two daughters, Shelby Whitt of Winchester, and Sarah Lawson of Middleburg; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. J. Randall Orndorff officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Moore, Sammy Leach, Scott Moore, Stacy Leach, Richard Whitt, and Tommy Whitt.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Susie L. Foltz
Susie L. Foltz, 100, of Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Foltz was born March 16, 1899, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Charles W. and Virginia Godlove Wolford. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Augusta, W.Va.

She married Grover C. Foltz on June 14, 1920, in Winchester. Mr. Foltz died in 1968.

Surviving are a son, Blake A. Foltz of Winchester; four daughters, Lenora L. Crim of Winchester, Divona F. Braithwaite of Winchester, Shirley F. Garver of Stephens City, and Carolyn M. Childs of Cabot, Ark. ; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Charles W. Foltz, and a daughter, Alma M. Stokes, are deceased.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Garry Felton officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Norma L. Shell
Norma Lee Shell, 79, of Lost River, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at the home of her sister.

Miss Shell was born Dec. 8 1920, in Lost City, W.Va., the daughter of Gilbert Cletis and Verdie Lee Sherman Shell.

She was a member of Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church of Lost City.

Surviving is a sister, Leta Marie Fogle of Lost River.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McKee Funeral Home, Baker, W.Va., with the Rev. Jonathan Hedrick officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Lost City.

Pallbearers will be Howard Fogle, Leslie Fogle, Jeff Funkhouser, David Parker, William F. “Bill” Miller, and Jeremy Smith.

Friends may call anytime Thursday at the funeral home.

Hilda C. Clowser
Hilda C. Clowser, 98, of 306 W. Whitlock Ave., Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Clowser was born May 26, 1901, in Winchester, the daughter of Claude H. Kline and Mary W. Pannett Kline.

She had been a bookkeeper for Miller’s Hardware and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She married Maynard H. Clowser on Dec. 20, 1921, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving are a daughter, Colleen M. Berry of Winchester; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis W. Kleinmann. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

Anthony A. Alkins
Anthony A. “Tony” Alkins, 55, of Laurel, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Laurel.

Mr. Alkins was born Feb. 20, 1944, in Post of Spain, Trinidad, British West Indies, the son of Archibald W. and Ruby H. Spence Alkins. He was a computer consultant with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving on the USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown.

Surviving are a daughter, Michelle Taylor of Ellicott City, Md.; six step-children, Thach Nguyen and Ti Nguyen, both of Guam, Trach Nguyen of Arlington, Tringh Nguyen and Trang Nguyen, both of College Park, Md., and Tram Nguyen; a brother, Brian Alkins of Joppatown, Md.; and a half-brother Abraham Luttrell of Winchester.

His stepfather, Milton Luttrell Jr., is deceased.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will be in Winchester National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the National Institutes of Health, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Md. 20892.
