Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Sara K. Martin
Sara Kathryn Martin, 68 of 2432 Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Martin was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Sector, W.Va., the daughter of Leroy Richard and Edna D. Hott Puffinburger.

She married John F. Martin on Jan. 4, 1980, in Winchester. Mr. Martin died Feb. 10, 1994.

Surviving are three sisters, Daisy Haines and Mary Mason, both of Winchester, and Betty Stokes of Strasburg; and four brothers, Daniel Puffinburger of Pennsylvania, and Benjamin Puffinburger, Paul Puffinburger, and James Puffinburger, all of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

John R. Hovermale
John Richard “Dick” Hovermale, 64, of 323 Walker St., Winchester, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Hovermale was born Sept. 5, 1935, in Winchester, the son of William Austin and Nina Omps Hovermale. He was a self-employed accountant. He was a veteran of the West Virginia Air National Guard and earned an associate degree from Lord Fairfax Community College.

He was a member and treasurer of Christ Episcopal Church and a member of the adult choir. He was on the board of the Shenandoah Valley Independent Living Council.

He married Sally Boucher on June 14, 1969, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother, of Winchester, are two sons, John Richard Hovermale Jr. of Biloxi, Miss., and William Glenn Hovermale of Narragansett, R.I.; and a sister, Evonne “Bonnie” Lockhart of Winchester.

A memorial service will be at noon Tuesday in Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Douglas McCaleb and the Rev. Susan Buchanan officiating.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601 or to Christ Episcopal Church, Organ Fund, 134 West Boscawen St., Winchester 22601.

Alvin W. Gent
Alvin W. “Dude” Gent, 73, of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Gent was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Portsmouth, Ky., the son of Elias and Ida Mae Combs Gent. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines.

He was married to Geraldine D. Miller.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Thomas L. Gent of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Ronald L. Gent of Bunker Hill; a brother, Mack Gent of Bunker Hill; two sisters, Opal Cline of Stephens City and Garnett Baker of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 today at Rest United Methodist Church Cemetery with Roger T. Powell officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Newton D. Baker Post 896, Berkeley Post 14 of the American Legion, and the Amvets Post 38.

Memorials may be made to Rest United Methodist Church, 1233 Rest Church Road, Clearbrook 22624.

Alma V. Henry
Alma V. Henry, 93, of 1040 Adams Ave., Front Royal, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Henry was born Sept. 30, 1906, in Warren County, the daughter of Quint and Elnora Cook Gordon. She was a cook for several restaurants in the Front Royal area.

She was a member of Bentonville Baptist Church.

She was married to Ezra Henry.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jane Sine of Front Royal; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Four daughters, Louise Smelser, Lethie May Henry, Joanne Henry, and Janet Henry, and three sons, Hollis Henry, Wilson Henry, and Aubrey Henry, are deceased.

Joseph W. Pent
Joseph William Pent, 85, of 137 Marple Road, Winchester, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Pent was born June 12, 1914, in Pittsburgh, the son of Joseph and Louise Brown Pent Brown.

He was the stepson of Charles E. Brown.

He was general office manager for National Fruit Product Co. and retired after 47 years.

He was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church.

He married Evelyn Unger on June 24, 1937, in Winchester.

He is survived by his wife.

A daughter, Joan Elaine Pent, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Florence Legg and the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Boyd Unger, Linden Unger, Carroll Unger, Donald Unger, Larry Strowbridge, Fred Unger Jr., Monte Unger, Dwaine Unger, Kevin Unger, and B.J. Unger.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Kenneth E. Timbrook
Kenneth Eugene Timbrook, 62, of Romney, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Timbrook was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of Thomas and Ethel Puffenburger Timbrook.

Surviving with his mother are three sons, Kenneth E. Timbrook Jr. and Harold T. Timbrook, both of Moorefield, W.Va., and James C. Timbrook, of Petersburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Arbutus J. George, of Keyser, W.Va.; a brother, Thomas M. Timbrook, of Romney; a sister, Geraldine Boyles, of Robertsdale, Ala.; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Samuel Biser officiating. Burial will be in Whipp Family Cemetery in Burlington, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Virginia O. Foltz
Virginia O. Foltz, 72, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Foltz was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Independence, the daughter of Robert D. and Laura C. Robbins Osborne. She was retired from the Berkeley County Committee on Aging.

She was a member of the Little Falls Presbyterian Church in Falling Waters, W.Va., and the Women of the Moose, Chapter 738.

She was married to Homer P. Foltz, who died in 1972.

Surviving are four sisters, Nan Parrish of Fort Myers, Fla., Faye LaBeau of Winchester, Wanda Townsend of Orlando, Fla., and Phyllis Wasson of Martinsburg.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant View Memory Gardens Chapel, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Andrew L. Snelson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Phillip W. Greenwell Jr.
Phillip W. Greenwell Jr., 81, of 2633 Northwestern Pike, Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Greenwell was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Washington, D.C., the son of Phillip W. and Neilia May Harrell Greenwell. He had been a route salesman for Wonder Bread Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, and Winchester Elks Lodge 867. He was a life member of VFW Post 2123 and Millwood Station Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company.

He married Ardis Fjelstad on Dec. 30, 1947, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Greenwell is deceased.

Surviving are two sisters, Doris McMullan of Temple Hills, Md., and Winifred Heil of Bowie, Md.; and a brother, Thomas Greenwell of Woodbridge.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rhodes Woolly officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123. A reception will follow at Millwood Station Fire & Rescue Company.

Pallbearers will be Dale Fjelstad, Robert Hall, John Harden, Al Felicio, Jeff Sandy, Tim Bailey, Bud Wyatt, and Gary Clark.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jack Kerns
The Rev. Jack Kerns, 89, of 903 Bloomery Pike, Whitacre, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at his home.

The Rev. Kerns was born Oct. 26, 1910, in Bloomery, W.Va., the son of Earl and Mary Agnus Abrell Kerns. He was a retired minister of Faith Temple in Whitacre.

He was married to Bessie Cunningham. His first wife, Hazel Cowgill Kerns, died Oct. 21, 1970.

Surviving with his wife, are four sons, Hartley Kerns of Whitacre, Donald Kerns, Lynn Kerns, and Brandon “Jackie” Kerns, all of Winchester; a daughter, Mildred Vanderweger of Oklahoma; two brothers, Frank Kerns of Homestead, Fla., and Warren Kerns of Paw Paw, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Elizabeth Frye and the Rev. Allen Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Phyllis T. Walters
Phyllis T. “Skippy” Walters, 68, of 220 Opequon Ave., Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Walters was born Jan. 13, 1932, in Winchester, the daughter of John A. and Nora Henderson Thornton. She was a secretary at Handley Library for about 10 years and had been a clerk for Novick Transfer for 20 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and Women of the Moose, Chapter 1367. She was a 1949 graduate of Handley High School.

She married Bill Walters on April 25, 1964, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband, are a daughter, Karen L. Barry of Jefferson, Md.; two sisters, Johan Coates of Winchester and Jeannie Pipes of Stephens City; and a grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Warren E. Boling officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Pipes, Carl Smith, Bobby Ryan, Jerry Reid, Ronnell Kimble, and Robert Pipes Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 10201 Lee Highway, Suite 210, Fairfax 22030.

Mary C. Bradley
Mary C. Barton Bradley, 85, formerly of Winchester, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Bradley was born May 22, 1914, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Frank and Lucy Dingas Lichliter. She was a farmer.

She was married to Harry O. Bradley. Her first husband was Hugh Vernon Barton.

Surviving are four daughters, Frances Barton of Luray, Margaret Tisinger and Thelma Vann, both of Winchester, and Pauline Vann of Maurertown; and a son, Vernon Barton of Winchester.

Five children are deceased.

Burial will be at a later date in Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery, Luray.

Charles A. Curry
Charles Alfred Curry, 81, of Summit Point, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, Md.

Mr. Curry was born April 29, 1918, in Summit Point, the son of Charles and Rose Butler Curry. He was a machine operator for Dixie Narco Corp. and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth S. Curry; two sons, Charles A. Curry Jr. of Jamaica Queens, N.Y., and Howard Pete Curry of Winchester; three daughters, Dorothy R. Cook and Ruby McIntosh, both of Winchester, and Betty Jane Taylor of Charles Town, W.Va.; two sisters, Lena Underwood and Rosebud Underwood, both of Charles Town; a brother, James Curry of Charles Town; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A son, Wilbur “Fox” Curry, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va., with the Rev. Abner Carey officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Elfrieda J. Gardner
Elfrieda J. Gardner, 88, of 776 Boom Road, Berryville, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Gardener was born April 27, 1911, in Clarke County, the daughter of Clarence and Naomi Jenkins.

She was married to John Gardener, who died Sept. 28, 1975.

Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Jones of Berryville, June Baxter of Frederick, Md., and Geraldine Thompson of Panama City, Fla.; a son, John Gardner Jr. of Berryville; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Two daughters, Betty Lee and Mary Bauserman, are deceased.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with the Rev. Cannon Dwight L. Brown officiating.
