Robert C. Gochenour
Robert Christopher Gochenour, 79, of 109 Isabel St., Minneola, Fla., formerly of Winchester, died Jan. 1, 2000, in Westminster Care of Clermont, Fla.
Mr. Gochenour was born May 28, 1920, in Winchester. He was a retired fireman at the Bethesda Naval Base. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1615 and a life member of the VFW of Winchester.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Gochenour; a son, Robert C. Gochenour of Winchester ; a stepson, James J. Wilder of Nelson, N.H.; a daughter, Joyce Ring of Bradenton, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
Burial will be at a later date.

Jane Schwertfeger
Jane Schwertfeger, 84, of Warrenton, formerly of Gore, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Warrenton Overlook Health Care Center, Warrenton.
Mrs. Schwertfeger was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Savanna, Ill., the daughter of George and Catherine Poffenberger Welch.
She was married to Theron “T.B.” Schwertfeger. Mr. Schwertfeger died Jan. 27, 1999.
Surviving are three sons, Dale L. Schwertfeger of Chester Gap, James B. Schwertfeger of Del Rio, Texas, and Jay P. Schwertfeger of Warrenton; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Timber Ridge Church Cemetery, High View, W.Va., with the Rev. Gregory R. Kenney officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Effie L. Hopewell
Effie Lively Hopewell, 90, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Strasburg, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Florida.
Mrs. Hopewell was born May 30, 1909, in Waynesboro, Ga., the daughter of Joseph I. and Sara Etta Johnson Lively. She was a retired registered nurse and formerly head nurse with American embassies in South and Central America during World War II.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bradenton, and a former member of Strasburg Presbyterian Church.
She was known for her china painting and earned numerous ribbons at the Manatee County Fair.
She was married to Dr. Edward Lee Hopewell.
Surviving are a son, John Hopewell of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Alice Willis of Rockville, Md.; a sister, Nelle Mauger of Prineville, Ore.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, the Rev. Charles Simon officiating.
Pallbearers will be Doug Arthur, Jack Fisher, Richard Kleese, Steve Brim, Bobby Brown, and George Pasquet.

Dorothea M. Budwesky
Dorothea Mills Budwesky, 91, of Winchester, formerly of Alexandria, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.
Mrs. Budwesky was a legal secretary for the City of Alexandria for 20 years. She was a graduate of Alexandria High School.
She was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church and a volunteer with the board of directors for the Salvation Army.
She had been living with her cousin, Tina K. Kauten, of Winchester.
She was married to Carl L. Budwesky, who died Oct. 5, 1982.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
A funeral was Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church, Alexandria. Burial was in St. Pauls Episcopal Church Cemetery, Alexandria.

Fern E. Williams
Fern Elizabeth Williams 73, of 440 Chase St., Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Williams was born July 15, 1926, in Winchester, the daughter of Howard and Hattie Brown Mason. She was a member of St. Stephens C.M.E. Church, where she was a member of the Steward and Missionary boards.
She was married to Robert Samuel Williams.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Allen Williams of Poolesville, Md., and Kenneth Earl Williams and James Edward Williams, both of Winchester; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Williams of Winchester; a sister, Clara Mason of Winchester; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at noon Friday in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryan Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cartwright Funeral Home.
Jane M. Wilson
Jane Marshall Marrow Wilson, 93, of 374 Copp Road, Strasburg, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Long Term Care of Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.
Mrs. Wilson was born March 29, 1906, in Dinwiddle, the daughter of the Rev. Rubin and Frances Reeves Meredith. She was a member of Christian Newcomer Methodist Church, Toms Brook.
She was married to Norman Wilson. Her first husband was Addison Marrow.
Surviving are three daughters, Nancy Bauserman of Strasburg, Margaret Presgraves of Richmond, and Carol Calder of Winchester; two sons, Addison Marrow Jr. of Coral Springs, Fla., and James Marrow of Winchester; a stepdaughter, Daryl Leonard of Delaplane; a sister, Mary Niles of Miami; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with Pastor Fred Lentz officiating. Burial will be private in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.

Millie L. Phares
Millie Lucinda Phares, 80, of Rowlesburg, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Grafton, W.Va.
Mrs. Phares was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Horseshoe Run, W.Va., the daughter of John and Emma Jean Simmons Worting. She was a nurse’s aide at Hopemont State Hospital and a member of Erwin United Methodist Church.
She was married to Donald Phares. Her first husband was Edgar Flynn.
Surviving are three sons, Terry Worting of Stephenson, Edgar Flynn of Grafton, and William Flynn of Etam; a daughter, Pam Bucklew of Erwin, W.Va.; a sister, Susie Sager of Winchester; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Browning Funeral Home, Rowlesburg, with the Rev. Kenneth Lake officiating. Burial will be in Eglon Cemetery.

Roger A. Holliday
Roger Allen “Jim” Holliday, 56, of 1086 S. Timber Ridge Road, Cross Junction, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Holliday was born June 7, 1943, in Frederick County, the son of Eldridge W. and Myrtle Clark Holliday. He was a carpenter.
Surviving with his mother, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., are two sons, Ronald Brown of Winchester and Randy Irvin of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Tammy Bittinger of Paw Paw, W.Va.; four brothers, Donald Holliday and Dickie Holliday, both of Gainesboro, Daniel Holliday of Cross Junction, and Richard Holliday of Winchester; a sister, Betty Heironimus of Inwood, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Timber Ridge Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Cross Junction, with Charles Fisher officiating.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Clark, Winfred Bradley, Robert Alkire, Earl Holliday, Melvin McDonald, and Allen Speelman.

Henry C. Johnson
Henry Clay Johnson, 95, of Boyce, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Johnson was born Oct. 25, 1904. He was a gardener and a deacon of Providence Baptist Church, Orlean.
Surviving is a brother, William Johnson of Warrenton.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Providence Baptist Church, Orlean, with the Rev. Frederick Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Morris Community Cemetery, Hume.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service at the church.

Hunter W. Buckner
Hunter Warren “Buck” Buckner, 74, of 449 Buckmarsh St., Berryville, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mr. Buckner was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Clarke County, the son of Robert and Mossie Feltner Buckner. He was superintendent of Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.
He was a staff sergeant in the Army with the 69th Infantry Division during World War II. He served four years in Germany and Austria as a machine gunner and served in Japan.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Berryville Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 21 of Winchester, VFW Post 9760 of Berryville, North American Hunt Club, B.A.S.S., and the Izaak Walton League.
He was married to Ethel “Bea” Riley Hess Gladhill in 1964. Mrs. Buckner died Oct. 31, 1989.
Surviving are four stepdaughters, Dawn Ann Brown, Gloria Jean Rasta, and Sandra Lepage Miller, all of California, and Barbara Lee Cochran of Berryville.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Dr. R.A. Daily officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors accorded by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Charlie S. Brown
Charlie Sylvester Brown, 69, of Route 1, Box 170, Paw Paw, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Brown was born July 14, 1930, in Paw Paw, the son of George G. and Maude Betson Brown. He was a construction equipment operator and had retired. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was married to Mildred Virginia Rohrbaugh.
Surviving with his wife, are four sons, Charlie Brown Jr., Gary Eugene Brown, and Pete Handy, all of Paw Paw, and Eric Amos Handy of Bloomery, W.Va.; three daughters, Jeannie Bittinger and Carrie Lea Handy of Paw Paw, and Shirley Schoonover of Independence, Md.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A son is deceased.
A funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va. Burial will be private.

George A. High Sr.
George Abel High Sr., 86, of Purgitsville, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, W.Va.
Mr. High was born March 17, 1913, in Purgitsville, the son of George M. and Ruhamma M. Flemming High.
He farmed most of his life.
He was married to Loraine A. Nazelrod.
Surviving with his wife, are a son, George A. High Jr.; three daughters, Clara Wratchford, Georgia Smith, and Peggy High, all of Moorefield, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and four step great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with Don Kesner officiating. Burial will be in Elijah High Cemetery.

Jamie L. Crawford
Jamie Lee Crawford, 40, of Front Royal, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.
Mr. Crawford was born June 6, 1959, in Warren County, the son of Della Aleshire Crawford and James Earl Crawford. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Front Royal.
Surviving with his parents, of Front Royal, are a brother, Jay Crawford of Front Royal; and three sisters, Vanessa Boies of Front Royal, and Bonnie Alviar and Julie Kerns, both of Goldsboro, N.C.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Dr. Randy Orndorff officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.
