Alfred M. Kipps
Alfred Miller Kipps, 90, of 102 Hickory St., Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Kipps was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Quicksburg, the son of George Kipps and Ada Kipps Weatherholtz. He was a truck driver for Novick Transfer and had been self-employed. He was a member of Winchester Eagles Aerie 824.

He married Lottie Mae Farmer on June 14, 1930, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife, are a son, Robert Lee “Bobby” Kipps of Winchester; a brother, Ralph Weatherholtz of Shenandoah Farms; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, with Mark Peters and Steven Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Alfred Carter, Tommy Kipps, John Reid, Leonard Williamson, James Shuler, Clinton Roberts, and members of the Winchester Eagles Aerie 824.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Round Hill Fire and Rescue Company, 769 Round Hill Road, Winchester 22602.

Juanita S. Larrick
Juanita Strawser “Toots” Larrick, 74, of Battlefield Drive, Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Larrick was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Circleville, Ohio, the daughter of John and Dorothea Hempke Strawser. She had been administrator of the United Cerebral Palsy Center in Santa Ana, Calif., medical secretary at Orange Grove Center for the Mentally Retarded in Chattanooga, Tenn., and secretary to the president of Wales Transportation Co. in Grand Prairie, Texas.

She was a graduate of Circleville High School and attended Ohio State University.

She married Allen W. Larrick on June 20, 1970, in Lancaster, Ohio.

Surviving with her husband, is a sister, Bernice Hunter of Phoenix.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shenandoah Memorial Park Chapel, with the Rev. Donald Y. Miller officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ann E. Oates
Ann “Betty” Elizabeth Pearson Oates, 80, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Shenandoah Health Village Center, Charles Town, W.Va.

Mrs. Oates was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Hume, the daughter of Jennie Belle and Joseph William Pearson.

Surviving are a son, Robert “Bob” Carlton James of Potomac Falls; a daughter, Nancy Belle Unger of Stephens City; three brothers, James Pearson of Smithfield, Fred Pearson of Franconia, and Ralph Pearson of Warrenton; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Lyman Charles “Chuck” Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Pallbearers will be Robert “Bob” James, James Pearson, Fred Pearson, Ralph Pearson, Robert “Robbie” Bowers, and Robert “Rob” Cottrell.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Anna L. Hovermale
Anna Lou Hovermale, 74, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Hovermale was born April 3, 1925, in Brosius, W.Va., the daughter of John F. and Laura M. Baker Rankin. She was a 1942 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School and had worked at Tink’s Grocery in the late 1950s.

She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren faith. She was a member of Berkeley Chapter 77 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Ye Towne of Bath Chapter of the NSDAR, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Moose Lodge 1483, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, and Risinger Stotler VFW Post 4019, all of Berkeley Springs. She was a member of Eagles Aerie 4179 in Martinsburg, W.Va., and the Redmen Club in Williamsport, Md.

She was married to Chester E. Hovermale, who died Aug. 16, 1989.

Surviving are a son, Gale H. Hovermale of Berkeley Springs; a daughter, Barbara Ann Spielman of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Kathryn Eppinger and Iris Jean Duckwall, both of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Herbert R. Rankin of Orange; four grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Hennis H. Fox officiating. Burial will be in Mahnes Chapel Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home where a memorial service by the Eastern Star will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Mahnes Chapel Cemetery, Route 4, Box 7165, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Donald G. Pattishall
Donald G. Pattishall, 86, of Centreville, formerly of Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.

Mr. Pattishall was born July 13, 1913, the son of Helen Gardner Pattishall and John C. Pattishall Sr. He worked for Bergmann’s Cleaners in Washington, D.C., for 30 years and retired from Shenandoah Sanitary Supply in Winchester. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Pattishall was a member of the Winchester Eagles Club.

He was married to the former Anna Zonneveld, who died in 1979.

Surviving are a daughter, Carla D. Wessells; four sons, Bruce A. Pattishall, Thomas E. Robertson, James R. Robertson, and Frank C. Robertson; a sister, Ruth H. Robertson; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mildred L. Knotts
Mildred Lee Knotts, 79, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, W.Va.

Mrs. Knotts was born March 5, 1920, in Hamilton, W.Va, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Wotring Arnold. She and her husband owned and operated Knotts Taxidermy in Capon Bridge, W.Va. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Lantz Ridge, W.Va. She was a member of the Sunshine Club in Lantz Ridge.

Mrs. Knotts was married to Mervin F. Knotts on Nov. 20, 1936, in Parsons, W.Va.

Surviving with her husband are four sons, Mervin Garland Knotts of Charles Town, W.Va., Dale David Knotts of Atlanta, Allen R. Knotts of Winchester, and John Chamblin of Bloomery, W.Va.; three daughters, Betty Lipscomb of Augusta, W.Va., Carol Poling of Capon Bridge, W.Va., and Linda Meade of High View, W.Va.; a brother, Charles Arnold of Hamilton, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. George Reed officiating. Burial will be at the Malick Cemetery near Augusta.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Giffin Funeral Home.

James S. Triggs
James Stewart Triggs, 58, of Ridgeway, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Triggs was born July 28, 1941, in Winchester, the son of Kathleen Sargent Chapman and James S. Triggs.

He was a member of Paynes Chapel United Methodist Church and was retired from AT&T, where he had worked as a systems technician. Mr. Triggs recently worked for Ford Communications in Hagerstown, Md., and was a volunteer at City Hospital, Martinsburg. He was a 1959 graduate of Musselman High School.

Survived with his mother of Ridgeway are his wife, Leslie Brown Triggs; a son, Michael Triggs of Winchester; four daughters, Sandra Carter of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Barbara Oates of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Sharon Triggs of Stephens City, and Jacqueline Triggs of Ridgeway, W.Va.; a sister, Jean Hott of Ridgeway, W.Va.; and five grandchildren; and his stepfather, Ward Chapman of Ridgeway.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Paynes Chapel Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Khrista Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church.

Kathalene M. Gillespie
Kathalene M. Gillespie, 65, of 2430-20 Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Gillespie was born April 16, 1934, in Parkersburg, W.Va., the daughter of Ralph W. and Virginia E. Shadd Eschbacher. She was a graduate of Warren County High School.

She was a member of Winchester Church of God, Senior Citizens Bowling League, Prime Timers Choir, and Voices of Victory.

She married Charles E. Gillespie on July 12, 1952, in Winchester. Mr. Gillespie died Oct. 13, 1997.

Surviving are a son, Charles E. Gillespie Jr. of Winchester; three daughters, Teena L. Brown of Winchester, and Deborah E. White and Karen L. Kohne, both of Stephenson; two sisters, Louise Carter and Carolyn Grove, both of Front Royal; a brother, Michael Heishman of Romney, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Winchester Church of God, with the Rev. Darrell W. Waller and the Rev. Chad Dunsford officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Grove, Bill Grove, Steven Munson, Robert Baker, Wayne Edmonson, and Edward McClellan.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home.

Helen M. Lohman
Helen Mae Lohman, 81, of 100 Covington Lane, Winchester, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Fredericksburg Nursing Home, Fredericksburg.

Mrs. Lohman was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Friendsville, Md., the daughter of Charles M. and Rhuie Frazee Humberson.

Mrs. Lohman was a member of Sand Spring Church of God in Friendsville, Md.

She was married to Chester Lohman, who died in 1990.

Surviving are three sons, Larry H. Lohman of Spotsylvania, Fred M. Lohman of Tucson, Ariz., and Jack A. Lohman of Burke; three half-brothers, Harold Humberson and Ward Humberson, both of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Rueben Humberson of Patterson Creek, W.Va.; four half-sisters, Ramona Campbell of Goose Creek, S.C., Emogene Farthing of Columbus, Ohio; Virginia Pomplas of Markleysburg, Pa., and Lavona Shaheen of Friendsville; two stepbrothers, Charles Thomas and George Thomas, both of Friendsville; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted at 10 a.m. this morning at Sand Spring Church of God with the Rev. Mark Lawson officiating. Internment is in the Humberson Cemetery, Friendsville, Md.

Lee M. Coffinberger
Lee M. Coffinberger, 80, of Pikeside, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg, W. Va.

Mr. Coffinberger was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Jefferson County, W.Va., the son of James C. Coffinberger and Martha Link Coffinberger.

He was retired from Martin Marietta after 36 years, was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 503rd Car Company. He was a 1937 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

Surviving are his wife, Helen M. Russler Coffinberger; a son, David Lee Coffinberger of Martinsburg; a daughter, Sherlyn C. Clarke of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two brothers, John H. Coffinberger of Martinsburg, and Dennis Coffinberger of Leetown, W.Va.; a sister, Mary E. Caldwell of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. James D. Riley Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, with military honors by Newton D. Baker Post 896 of the VFW, Berkeley Post 14 of the American Legion, and AMVETS Post 38.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, West Virginia Affiliate, 1221-A Ohio Ave., PO Box 1115, Dunbar, W.Va. 25064.

James A. Spiker
James Albert Spiker, 69, of 10794 Back Road, Maurertown, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999.

Mr. Spiker was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Maurertown, the son of Sidney Albert and Flossie Eunice Borden Spiker. He retired after 44 years with Chemstone Corp. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where he was a trustee and a member of the church council.

He was married to Shirley Ann Bly.

Surviving with his wife, are four children, Debbie Keeler and Sherry Ritenour, both of Strasburg, Connie Lam of Nokesville, and Travis Church of Woodstock; a brother, Robert Spiker of Toms Brook; five sisters, Ruth Holler of Toms Brook, Charlotte Steppe and Fleda Morganthaler, both of Maurertown, Virginia Hottle of Woodstock, and Lucille Dodson of Mt. Jackson; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Toms Brook, with James Baseler officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Strosnider, Carl Conner Jr., Mike Cook, Robert Spiker Jr., Robert Pangle Jr., and Jason Rhodes Jr.

Jacob B. Kessel
Jacob B. Kessel, 91, of Springfield, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2000 at Dawn View Manor Nursing Home, Fort Ashby, W.Va.

Mr. Kessel was born Feb. 17, 1908, in Purgitsville, W.Va., the son of Charles and Mary Ella Kessel.

He was married to Virginia Kessel.

Surviving are two daughters, Myrna L. Woodson of Springfield, and Carol Khonne of Virginia; three sisters, Alma Corbin and Helen Nicholson, both of Romney, W.Va., and Bertha Campbell of Iowa; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Ebenzer Cemetery, Romney, with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.

Maybelle E. Cordell
Maybelle E. Cordell, 77, of 1426 Springsbury Road, Berryville, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Cordell was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Maine, the daughter of Lloyd Benjamin Oakes and Evelyn Oakes. She had been a repair dispatcher for the telephone company.

She was married to Joseph Lewis Cordell.

Surviving are a son, Dennis L. Cordell of Alexandria; a daughter, Alice C. Stoner of Berryville; two brothers, Lloyd B. Oakes and Readell I. Oakes; two sisters, Arlene Hillyare and Anne Mae Ostradick; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home, Leesburg, with Father Sean Rousseau officiating.

Clara H. Renner
Clara Hahn Renner, 86, of 118 Echo Lane, Winchester, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Renner was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Hardy County, W.Va., the daughter of Lorenzo Mackerel and Amanda Rebecca Michael Hahn.

She was married to Paul Carlton Renner, who died Nov. 4, 1988.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Renner Johnson of Winchester; two sisters, Pauline Thompson of Wardensville, W.Va., and Bertha Stanaitis of Winchester; two brothers, John W. Hahn and Wilbur Hahn, both of Wardensville, W.Va.; and a grandson.

A graveside service was conducted at 11 this morning at Mount Hebron Cemetery with Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating.
