Glendon R. Dyer
Glendon Ray Dyer, 56, of Stanley Avenue, Clarksburg, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Halquist Memorial Hospice Center, Arlington.
Mr. Dyer was born July 30, 1944, in Wardensville, W.Va., the son of Waitman Cornwell Dyer and Madeline Love Dyer. He was a civil engineer with MSES Consultants in Clarksburg and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He graduated from West Virginia University in 1971 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering.
He was a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason with membership in Clarksburg Lodge 155 A.F.&A.M. and the Nemesis Temple of Shrine. He served as an officer with the National Society of Professional Engineers and the West Virginia Association of Land Surveyors.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering, the Wardensville Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg.
He married Donna Lough on April 14, 1971.
Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Wardensville, are a son, Christopher Scott Dyer of Morgantown, W.Va.; two daughters, Tracy Watson of Clarksburg and Melissa Leutz of St. Mary’s, Ga.; two brothers, John Roger Dyer and James R. Dyer, both of Wardensville; a sister, Helen Dyer Miller of Winchester; and four grandchildren.
A daughter, Jennifer Nicole Dyer, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Clarksburg, with the Rev. Dr. Eric Faust officiating. Burial will be in a private family cemetery in Wardensville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg.

Virginia L. Smith
Virginia L. “Mama Jenny” Johnson Smith, 95, of Front Royal, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Lynn Care Center, Front Royal.
Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 23, 1905, in Paris, Va., the daughter of Robert and Mary Travis Johnson. She worked in the household of Dr. Elizabeth B. Sherman for more than 50 years.
She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Front Royal, and sang in the choir. She was active in the Women’s Society of Christian Services and was a member of the Cavalier Club Auxiliary.
She married Larkin W. Smith in 1926. Mr. Smith died Sept. 21, 1968.
Surviving are a son, Willard W. Smith of Front Royal; three daughters, Bernice Easley of Fredericksburg, and Mildred Richards and Mary Spriggs, both of Front Royal; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Lorenzo Hill officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gilbert Baltimore, Robert Smith, Juan Smith, Jerome Smith, Thornton Jackson, and Devin Smith.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Tony Verge
Tony Verge, 80, of Inwood, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Verge was born April 15, 1920, in Grant Town, W.Va., the son of Joe and Rossa Scarfolio Verge. He was a retired coal miner from Eastern Gas and Fuel Association in Grant Town. He was a member of District 31, Local Union 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was in the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.
He was married to Mildred Kupreanik.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Anthony Verge of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Leonard Verge of Chambersburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Leo Catholic Church, Inwood, with the Rev. Brian Shoda, Celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, with a Rosary service at 8:30 p.m.

Edna W. Garman
Edna Webb Garman, 92, of 1881 Harvest Drive, Winchester, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Garman was born Jan. 16, 1909, in Bosqueville, Texas, the daughter of Augustas James and Nannie Ruth Hall Webb. She owned the Old Mill Antique Shop in Millwood from 1975 to 1989 and the Midland Hall Antique Shop in Pinehurst, N.C., from 1989 to 1992.
She was a member of Millwood Country Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a past member of Greenway Garden Club.
She married Willard H. Garman on Jan. 25, 1938. Mr. Garman died Jan. 23, 1995.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley G. Brown of Boyce; a son, Warren W. Garman of Key West, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in Arlington National Cemetery.

Ruth M. Carter
Ruth M. Carter, 81, of Front Royal Pike, Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Ridgeway, W.Va., the daughter of Frederick and Jessie Rudolph Mowery. She was a waitress at Winchester Country Club for 38 years and retired from the Holiday Inn after 35 years.
She married Charles N. Carter on Aug. 24, 1938, in Frederick County. Mr. Carter died April 4, 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Catherine Vance of Winchester; a sister, Goldie Loy of Winchester; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Marguerite Ann Armel, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Dallas Darrell “Skip” Steele Jr., 69, of Stafford County, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Potomac Hospital.
Mr. Steele was born June 6, 1931. He was a master craftsman and retired from Kearney & Associates in Springfield. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserves.
He had been cared for by his aunt, Virginia Ruth Humphries.
His wife, Sybil Elizabeth Steele, is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Michael D. Steele of Fairfax and Dallas D. Steele III of Dale City; four daughters, Marion P. Jackson of Frederick, Md., Kippy S. Horak of Stafford, Lisa S. MacDonald of Winchester, and Vicki L. Pratt of Fredericksburg; two brothers, Iver Steele of Leesburg and Robert Steele of Port Orange, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara Shelton of Front Royal and Frances Kushlewski of Glen Burnie, Md.; 34 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Richland Baptist Church, with the Rev. James H. Bethany officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Carrie Clayton Meyers, 88, of 105 Donna Circle, Winchester, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Meyers was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Nain, the daughter of Edgar S. and Amanda Brown Marple. She was a seamstress at Bell Clothing and sewed the habits for Sacred Heart Convent for many years. She had been a production worker at O’Sullivan.
She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Winchester.
She was married to Paul Meyers, who died in 1990.
Surviving is a brother, Julian B. Marple of Stephens City.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Hartley Wigfield and the Rev. Larry Hickey officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Julian Marple Jr., Bill Campbell, Tom Marple, Lawrence Rader, William John, and Paul Margetts.

Audra E. Hackett, 76, of Cross Road, Brookfield, Conn., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Danbury Hospital, Danbury, Conn.
Mrs. Hackett was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Bluefield, W.Va., the daughter of Lee and Ethel Sheppard Hunt. She had worked at Haly Inc., Brookfield, for 35 years, where she was treasurer and office and plant manager.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Brookfield.
She married Robert J. Hackett on Feb. 14, 1944, in Agawam, Mass.
Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Catherine C. Donroe of Stamford, Conn.; a sister, Sandra Alger of Waynesboro; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Reliance Church, Frederick County, with Dr. William N. Wade officiating. Burial will be in Reliance Cemetery.
