Evelyn R. Mathias
Evelyn Rebecca Mathias, 81, of 100 Cedar St., Wardensville, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Mathias was born May 3, 1919, in Virgilina, N.C., the daughter of Luke J. and Ethel Battersill Chandler. She attended Faith Mission Church in Wardensville.
She was a graduate of Averett College in Danville and was the lead soloist at the college and at Mount Ranier Methodist Church in Mt. Ranier, Md.
Surviving is her husband, Judge Robert N. Mathias, whom she married on Feb. 17, 1943, in Albany, Ga.
A son, Robert B. Mathias II, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Mission Church, with Pastor David Garns officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Lost River, W.Va.
Pallbearers will be Jay Crawford, David Brill, Dan Cassell, Dar Ude, Brian Ude, and Ricky Heare.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Daisy Mae Hite
Daisy Mae Hite, 58, of Mann Lane, Shipman, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Hite was born Sept. 10, 1942, in Front Royal, the daughter of Willie S. and Agnes Sprouse Knave. She was the stepdaughter of James L. Dawson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Schuyler Baptist Church.
She was married to Franklin K. Hite.
Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Jean H. Moore of Arrington and Elizabeth Hite of Shipman; three sisters, Bessie Hawes of Buena Vista, Eleanor Clarke of Chantilly, and Kathleen Phinney of Lexington, Ill; two brothers, Walter Knave of Front Royal and Douglas Knave of Lexington, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Linden Cemetery, Linden.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.

Derwin M. Hayes, 37, of 426 N. Kent St., Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Hayes was born July 5, 1963, in Wurzberg, Germany, the son of Roosevelt Hayes Jr. and Mary Gilkerson Hayes.
Surviving with his parents, of Winchester, are three children; three sisters, Cassandra J. Hayes of Deland, Fla., and Danette E. Hayes and Theresa R. Hayes, both of Winchester; and a brother, Roosevelt J. Hayes of Winchester.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens C.M.E. Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Bryan E. Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

Glendon Ray Dyer, 56, of Clarksburg, W.Va., formerly of Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Arlington.

Ruth M. Carter
Ruth M. Carter, 81, of Front Royal Pike, Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Ridgeway, W.Va., the daughter of Frederick and Jessie Rudolph Mowery. She was a waitress at Winchester Country Club for 38 years and retired from the Holliday Inn after 35 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Catherine Vance of Winchester; a sister, Goldie Loy of Winchester; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Marguerite Ann Armel, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Richard Dick, James D. Ambrose Sr., J. Daniel Ambrose, C. David Ambrose, Daryl W. Ambrose, Richard Armel, and Michael Armel.

Dwight C. Billmeyer
Dwight C. Billmeyer, 68, of HC 78, Box 10, Rio, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Billmeyer was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Rio, the son of D. Brent and Beulah V. Wilson Billmeyer. He was a farmer and an Army veteran.
He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Rio.
He married Margel Poland on Nov. 24, 1951, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, D. Stephen Billmeyer and Andrew A. Billmeyer, both of Rio; a brother, Wayne W. Billmeyer of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a sister, Madeline Nesmith of Wardensville, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, with Pastor Richard Moll and Pastor R. Dale Poland officiating. Burial will be private in Rio Cemetery.

William W. Nickels Jr.
William Washington Nickels Jr., 76, of Waterford, died Thursday, February 1, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Nickels was born May 8, 1924, in Bristol, Tenn. He was an attorney and practiced law in Loudoun County for many years.
He was educated at Davidson College, Duke University, and the University of Virginia School of Law.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, with the rank of lieutenant.
He had been a mayor of Leesburg and president of the Loudoun Bar Association. He was a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church and a trustee of Catoctin Presbyterian Church in Waterford. He was a Mason, former president of the Waterford Foundation, and a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Loudoun Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Board of Directors.
He was married to Shirley Becker.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Margaret Nickels Larsen of Waterford and Mary Beth Roberts of Richmond; two sons, William Washington Nickels III of Orange and Harry Becker Nickels of Lincoln; a brother, George Nickels of Front Royal; a sister, Peggy Yarbro of Bristol, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Catoctin Presbyterian Church, Waterford, with the Rev. Martha Z. Miller officiating.

David F. Roberts III
David Frederick “Dave” Roberts III, 65, of HC 71, Box 45BB, Augusta, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Roberts was born April 4, 1935, in Frederick, Md., the son of David F. Roberts Jr. and Nellie Cole Roberts. He was a truck driver for Hill Construction in Clarksville, Md., and Kettlers Brothers Construction Co. in Gaithersburg, Md.
He had attended Augusta Assembly of God Church.
He married Elsie Lamm on April 15, 1965, in Frederick.
Surviving with his wife are five stepsons, James K. Flohr and Larry Flohr, both of Frederick, Clifford Flohr of Woodsboro, Md., and Robert Flohr and Ronald Flohr, both of Augusta; a stepdaughter, Debbie Anderson of Frederick; a half brother, Franklin B. Blank of Frederick; two half sisters, Mary Harding of Frederick and Barbara Portner of Hagerstown, Md.; 11 step grandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with Brother James Hawkins and Brother Frank Myers officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, Md.

Wilber L. Shoup
Wilber Lee Shoup, 91, of 3602 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the home of his son in Winchester.
Mr. Shoup was born Oct. 9, 1909, in Arkansas City, Kan., the son of Charles and Edna Shoup. He was an attorney and owner of S&W Realty Property Management Co.
He attended Arkansas City High School, Arkansas City College, and graduated from National City Law School in 1933.
He was in the Navy during World War II and was placed on 24-hour standby while he worked as an attorney at the Pentagon.
He was a member of the Washington Bar Association, the Kansas Demolay, and the Virginia Republican Party. He was a packmaster with the Cub Scouts of America.
He married Virginia Pringle in 1932. Mrs. Shoup died in 1988.
Surviving are a son, Edward T. Shoup of Winchester; a daughter, Virginia L. Weaver of Manassas; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. David Burrough officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Alice L. Cole
Alice Louise “Sue” Cole, 82, of High View, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Cole was born June 27, 1918, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of George Will Elliott and Tella May Marpole Elliott. She had been a seasonal employee with Shenandoah Apple Co-op and National Fruit Product Co.
She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eagles Aerie 824.
She was married to Phillip M. Cole.
Surviving with her husband, of High View, are two daughters, Betty Lewis of High View and Mary Orndorff of Toms Brook; a sister, Tishia Adams of Winchester; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Frederick County.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Adams, Gene Orndorff, Stoney Elliott, Don Johnston, James O’Neal, Russell Atkins, and Charles Kackley.

Arthur L. Nicholson
Arthur Lee Nicholson, 73, of 2237 Taft Circle, Winchester, formerly of Marion, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Nicholson was born July 21, 1927, in Clarksburg, W.Va., the son of William Howard and Gertrude Herrod Nicholson. He was the owner of Federal Tire Co. in Winchester and Marion.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester and Trinity Baptist Church in Marion. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a graduate of West Virginia University.
He married Dorotha Lee Forester on Aug. 3, 1946, in Clarksburg, W.Va.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Jeanne Anderson of Winchester; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. John Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
