Virginia C. Tevalt
Virginia “Ginny” Frances Crabill Tevalt, 86, formerly of Strasburg, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Loudoun Hospital Center, Leesburg.
Mrs. Tevalt was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Strasburg, the daughter of John S. and Cora Bell Nicholas Crider. She was retired from Aileen Inc. in Strasburg.
She was married to Eston Tevalt. Her first husband was Paul G. Crabill.
Surviving are two sons, John Phillip Crabill of Goldsboro, N.C., and Lonnie Marquis Crabill of Front Royal; two sisters, Jean Manuel of Strasburg and Shirley Manuel of Front Royal; a brother, Gerald Crider of Lusby, Md.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A son, Clark Allen Crabill, and a daughter, Bonita Turner, are deceased.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. J. Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Warren County.
Pallbearers will be Paul Crabill, Richard Alger, Michael Hamrick, Colby Brown, Page Manuel, and Steven Manuel.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Branson O. Himelwright
Branson O. Himelwright, 97, of 173 Morrison Road, Stephenson, formerly of Capon Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Welcome Haven Nursing Home, Winchester.
Mr. Himelwright was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Capon Springs, the son of John and Norah Orndorff Himelwright. He was a stone mason and a carpenter. He worked for Capon Springs & Farms in Capon Springs and was a forest ranger.
He was a member of Willow Chapel United Methodist Church, Capon Springs, and the Capon Springs Hunt Club.
He married Mabel Cooper on Dec. 21, 1927, in Kernstown. Mrs. Himelwright died May 11, 1990.
Surviving are two daughters, Wilda Heishman of Stephenson and Thelma Malone of Moorefield, W.Va.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Yellow Spring, W.Va., with Pastor Rob Lovett officiating.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Elmer E. Moreland
Elmer Eugene “Peanut” Moreland, 70, of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Dawn View Center, Fort Ashby, W.Va.
Mr. Moreland was born March 11, 1930, in Levels, W.Va., the son of Elmer and Mamie DeHaven Moreland. He was retired from Consolidated Orchard of Paw Paw and was a member of Levels United Methodist Church.
He married Anna Lou Santymire on May 22, 1948.
Surviving with his wife are four daughters, Louanna Corbett of Winchester, Karen McDonald of Funkstown, Md., and Lisa Arnold and Tina Hook, both of Paw Paw; a son, Michael Moreland of Winchester; three sisters; a brother, Oliver “Bill” Moreland of Paw Paw; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Earl Travis officiating. Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery, Paw Paw.

Donald N. Combs
Donald N. Combs, 79, of Frederick County, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Combs was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Kirby, W.Va., the son of Ira N. and Gertie Elizabeth Grapes Combs. He was a welder who worked for Fabriteck in Winchester and had retired from Westinghouse in Baltimore after 40 years.
He was a radar operator with the Coast Guard during World War II.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 62 of East Hartford, Conn.
He married Juanita Rogers on July 26, 1941, in Hagerstown, Md.
His wife survives.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with Pastor David R. Witt officiating.
A Masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home, Stephens City, where the family will receive friends until 9 p.m.

Bernard F. Synovec
Bernard F. Synovec, 71, of Augusta, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Synovec was born April 29, 1929, in Pierce, Neb., the son of Clarence and Bonnie Francis Synovec. He was retired from Bell Atlantic.
He was a member of Capon Bridge Ruritan Club, American Legion, and the Panhandle Sams.
He was married to Marjorie Jean Brennan.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Linda J. Bergling of Mt. Airy, Md.; two sons, Robert F. Synovec and John K. Synovec, both of Augusta; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. at Sunday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, with Minister Jack Wardrope officiating. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, W.Va.

Lillian Diamond Mandel, 90, of North Avenue, Olympia, Wash., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Olympia.

Riner C. Payne
Riner Champ Payne, 85, of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Payne was born Dec. 23, 1915, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of Champ Shepherd Payne and Mary Riner Payne.
He retired after 40 years of federal service and had served under every secretary of the Air Force and every chief of staff the organization had ever had. He was involved in the acquisition of most major Air Force systems during the Cold War and twice received the Air Force’s Exceptional Civilian Service Award.
Payne graduated from Shepherd College in 1935 with a degree in chemistry. He played football for the college and was offered a contract with the then-Boston Redskins. Instead of a football career, he chose teaching and taught in the Berkeley County Public Schools for four years.
In 1940, he was employed by the Bureau of the Census, and he served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He then resumed his civil service career as a statistician for the Veterans Administration.
In 1948, he became a civilian employee of the Comptroller’s Office of the newly created Air Staff Headquarters, Department of the Air Force. In 1955, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and in 1961, he received a master’s degree in Business Administration from George Washington University.
From 1962 to 1964, Payne was chief management analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency. He then returned to the Air Staff, where he was chief of Air Force Budget under Chief of Staff Curtis LeMay. In 1966, he became a special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management, and in 1969, he was appointed deputy for Financial Systems and Analysis to the assistant secretary of the Air Force. He retired from that position in 1980.
He married Madge LaRue Starliper in 1938. Mrs. Payne died in 1990.
Surviving are two sons, Col. Richard C. Payne of Hampton and Frederick W. Payne of Charlottesville; five granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the South Berkeley Chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Inwood, W.Va. Burial will be in Falling Waters Presbyterian Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Veterans Combined Honor Guard of Martinsburg, W.Va.

Edna V. Eidson
Edna Virginia Eidson, 82, of Stephens City, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Eidson was born March 13, 1918, in Frederick County, the daughter of Briscoe Luddrell and Bertie Branner Snapp. She retired in 1984 from Holladay Tyler Publishing Co. of Frederick, Md., where she worked since 1967. She had worked as a book binder at the former Doubleday Publishing Co. in Berryville for 23 years.
She was a member of Relief United Methodist Church in Frederick County.
She was married to Fred O. Eidson. Her first husband was Arthur William Boyd.
Surviving are two sons, James E. Boyd and David W. Boyd, both of Frederick County; two brothers, Briscoe W. Snapp and Ralph E. Snapp, both of Frederick County; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Relief United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert C. Blinn officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City.

Lucy A. Snapp
Lucy Agnes Snapp, 65, of 958 Kinzel Drive, Winchester, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Snapp was born Dec. 28, 1935, in Hampshire, W.Va., the daughter of Charles L. Pugh and Goldie Hovermale Kerns. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church.
She was cared for by Emma Campbell.
She was married to Eugene F. Oldt, who died Nov. 7, 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia G. Compton of Winchester; a brother, James E. Pugh of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and a grandson.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with David A. Owings officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Leonard C. Boyce Sr.
Leonard Charles “Duck” Boyce Sr., 75, of National Avenue, Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Boyce was born May 16, 1925, in Winchester, the son of Herman and Lena Foreman Boyce. He was a painting contractor and an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Highland Memorial Presbyterian Church, Eagles Aerie 824, VFW Post 2123, and Winchester Elks Lodge 867.
He married Genevieve McFarland on Aug. 26, 1950, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Leonard Charles Boyce Jr. of Gainesboro; a daughter, JoAnn Braithwaite of Berryville; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. John A. Robinson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Jessie E. Tucker
Jessie English Tucker, 83, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Mrs. Tucker was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Stafford County, the daughter of Powhatan and Bessie Bowling English. She worked as a hospital receptionist and intake clerk.
She attended Eastern High School and McKinley High School in Washington, D.C., and was of the Protestant faith.
She was married to Evan Hughes Tucker Jr., who died in 1993.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Tucker Jones of Berkeley Springs; a sister, Ethelyn Williams Blubaugh of Clearwater, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew Cooney officiating. Burial will be private.
