Thelma R. Custer
Thelma Ruth Miller Custer, 87, of Lambertsville Road, Stoystown, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Custer was born July 5, 1913, in Stonycreek Township, Pa., the daughter of Webster B. and Amanda C. Miller. She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Hill Gospel Tabernacle in Boswell, Pa.
She married John Shank Custer on March 4, 1937. Mr. Custer died in 1999.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Karl D. Custer of Winchester; two brothers, Arthur Miller of Phoenix and Chester Miller of Schellsburg, Pa.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, with the Rev. Chauncey J. Ickes officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery, Shanksville, Pa.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Larry Dale Burcham, 59, of 385 Gafia Lodge Road, Middletown, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Carl E. Puffinburger
Carl E. Puffinburger, 62 of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Puffinburger was born Jan. 23, 1939, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of Worley B. and Ethel Voorhees Puffinburger. He was a welder with United Asphalt Co. and a member of the Baptist faith.
He was married to Ophelia Jean Kief.
Surviving are four brothers, Albert L. Puffinburger, Calvin Nelson Puffinburger, and Worley F. Puffinburger, all of Martinsburg, and Harlen Ben Puffinburger of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and a sister, Deborah Kay Puffinburger of Martinsburg.
A stepdaughter, Rebecca Kief, is deceased.
A funeral will be at noon Friday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. William C. Crowe officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

Greta C. Beightol
Greta C. Beightol, 69, of 108 Rosemont Circle, Berryville, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Beightol was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emory Crites. She was a certified nursing assistant at Evergreen Health & Rehab in Winchester.
She was married to E. Lynn Beightol Jr., who died July 29, 2000.
Surviving are three daughters, Bonnie B. Jones of Bluemont, Brenda B. Bowen of Stephenson, and Beth B. Riser of Denver; three sons, E. Lynn Beightol III of Winchester, and Larry A. Beightol and Lance A. Beightol, both of Richmond; a brother, William Crites of San Bernardino, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Caporossi of Titusville, Fla., and Shirley Shehadeh of Olney, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Shane Beightol, Donald Jones, Rusty Jones, Clay Riser, Rick Nelson, and Steve Bowen.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Hattie G. Burks
Hattie Grace Burks, 62, of 21 E. Monmouth St., Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Burks was born May 27, 1938, in Winchester, the daughter of Lacey and Sadie Porter Christian. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester and the Poodles Club.
She was married to Kenneth E. Burks.
Surviving are two daughters, Lettie H. Burks of Winchester and Jane Rena Burks of Stephens City; two sons, Kenneth E. Burks Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Willie C. Hill of Winchester; two brothers, George T. Christian of Oakland, Calif., and Sylvester Lawston of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Winchester, with Pastor Gilbert M. Mack Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.
Pallbearers will be members of the family.

Lewis F. Carvell
Lewis Franklin “Frank” Carvell, 76, of 108 Rice St., Berryville, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Carvell was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Page County, the son of Frank and Virginia Good Carvell. He was co-owner and secretary of Thomas Plumbing and Heating Inc. in Berryville.
He was a member and deacon of Berryville Baptist Church. He was a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Green Hill Cemetery Board, and John H. Enders Fire and Rescue Company.
He married Betty K. Carvell on Oct. 14, 1945, in Berryville.
Surviving with his wife are a sister, Marilyn Gladwell of Luray; and a brother, Jedediah Carvell of Alexandria.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Berryville Baptist Church, with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.
Pallbearers will be James Crim, Neil Babb, Murray Pearson, Mark Longerbeam, Drew Longerbeam, and Edward Wisecarver.

Leslie L. Cook, 47, of 310 West Lane, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Cook was born July 7, 1953, in Winchester, the son of John B. Cook and Elsie M. Williams.
Surviving with his mother, of Millwood, are his maternal grandmother, Bessie Roberts of Boyce; his companion and mother of his children, Carolyn Rush of Winchester; a daughter, Lisa M. Rush of Winchester; three sons, Carl A. Rush, Dwayne E. Rush, and Marcus L. Rush, all of Winchester; four sisters, Mary C. Cook, Sharon Chappell, and Faith M. Jones, all of Winchester, and Andrea M. Smith of Berryville; two brothers, John B. Cook Jr. and Todd M. Williams, both of Millwood; and a grandchild.
A funeral will be at noon Friday at Guilfield Primitive Baptist Church, Millwood, with the Rev. Wilbur Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Charles “Buster” Jackson Cemetery, White Post.

Robert Pence Jr.
Robert “Shelt” Pence Jr., 76, of 439 Royal Ave., Strasburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home, Winchester.
Mr. Pence was born March 25, 1924, in Fishers Hill, the son of Robert Lee and Della Wolverton Pence. He was retired from Avtex Fibers after 43 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of the Strasburg Volunteer Fire Department for 51 years, and a member of Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg and Emmanuel Evangelical & Reform Church of Fishers Hill.
He was married to Ann Elizabeth Sager.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Gary L. Pence of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Karen Pence Keeler of Middletown; two brothers, Jim Pence and William “Bill” Pence, both of Strasburg; four sisters, Grace Miller and Peggy Rosenberger, both of Strasburg, Elizabeth Baker of Fishers Hill, and Betty Lou DiPasquale of Passaic, N.J.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A son, Robert Pence III, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Dan Locke officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

Bessie Plum Robinson, 75, of Stephens City, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Robinson was born May 2, 1925, in Mt. Falls, the daughter of Margaret Plum. She was the foster daughter of Russell and Rena Hulver. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. View United Methodist Church, Frederick County.
She married Lyle Robinson on April 9, 1942, in Winchester. Mr. Robinson died Jan. 23, 1990.
Surviving are a son, James M. Robinson of Mt. Falls; four daughters, Barbara A. Greenlee of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Sharon D. Brack of Williamsburg, and Linda E. Schroyer and Paula L. Loy, both of Stephens City; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. View United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William W. Erbach and the Rev. Robert C. Blinn officiating. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery.

Madeline C. Smith, 68, of Dowell J. Circle, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 11, 1932, in Winchester, the daughter of Lester and Julie Beatty Richardson. She had worked as a clerk at Grand Union Supermarket.
She was a member of Winchester Church of God.
She married Lawrence W. Smith on March 28, 1953, in Winchester.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Spaid of Gore; three sons, Lawrence W. Smith Jr. of High View, W.Va., Michael A. Smith of Mt. Falls Park, Frederick County, and Joseph A. Snapp of Middletown; three sisters, Lillian Brown of Middletown, Betty Huff of Winchester, and Patsy Fincham of Front Royal; a brother, Charles W. Richardson of Phoenix; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A son, Lewis Wayne Smith, is deceased.

Betty Rae Wright, 67, of Middletown, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.
Mrs. Wright was born Jan. 2, 1934, in Strasburg, the daughter of Jack Wilbur and Anna Airhart Morris. She was a cabinet craftsman at American Woodmark for more than eight years.
She was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church and a 1952 graduate of Strasburg High School.
She was married to Ernest R. Wright.
Surviving with her husband are a son, Roger A. Morris of Napa, Idaho; three daughters, Jeanne B. Martin of Richmond, and Anna M. Whittington and Lisa D. Snow, both of Middletown; four sisters, Margaret Morris, Jean Duffield, and Mary M. Funk, all of Strasburg, and Mildred Dawson of Venezuela, South America; a brother, Donald Morris of Strasburg; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
