Leland T. Ours
Leland Thaddeus Ours, 89, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Ours was born May 22, 1912, in Dorcas, W.Va., the son of Clarence E. and Arletta Crites Ours.
He was a farmer, a livestock dealer and an auctioneer. He had been associated with the South Branch Stockyards at Moorefield for 45 years, serving as clerk and as auctioneer.
He was a charter member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Co., and was a trustee of Grant Memorial Hospital for 20 years.
In 1956, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Potomac Valley Bank and retired as chairman in 1998.
He was a member of the Grove Street United Methodist Church.
He was married to Lois Feaster Ours who died May 25, 1997.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
Survivors include two sons, Thad Ours and Fred Ours, both of Petersburg; four grandsons and four great-grandsons.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Richard L. Longbon officiating
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Hicks Service
A funeral for Jordan Grace Hicks, whose obituary was published in Tuesday’s paper, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Chaplain J. Leland Collins officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ruth V. Miller
Ruth Virginia Miller, 84, of Radford, formerly of Winchester, died Monday Aug. 13, 2001, in Radford.
Mrs. Miller was born March 2, 1917, in Stephens City, daughter of John A. and Lucy M. Johnston Dicks.
She was a fruit broker for Miller Fruit Co. and a charter member of the Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church. She was a member of the Frederick County Home Extension Club.
She married John Washington Miller May 5, 1934, in Luray. Mr. Miller died Sept. 21, 1977.
Survivors include a son, Dwight B. Miller of Christiansburg; a sister, Sara Donald of Kernstown; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, John Walter Miller.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Eric G. Farel officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eric Miller, Charles Richards Jr., J. Daniel Miller, O. Bradley Grove Jr., Clay Grove, Tyler Grove, and Troy Grove.

Clara M. Nagley
Clara Maye Ashton Nagley, 74, of Winchester died Monday Aug. 13, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Nagley was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Clara Hazel E. Ashton Eaton and Roy Leonard Ashton.
She retired as a bookkeeper from the Frederick County Public Schools in 1989 after 24 years of service. She was a graduate of Winchester Business College.
She married William Harrison Nagley March 28, 1946, in Winchester.
Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Lois M. Hancock, of Forsyth, Ga. and Nancy Lee Felicio of Winchester; a son, Richard Eugene Nagley of Fort Garland, Colo.; a brother, Thomas L. Ashton of Winchester; a sister, Marna Lee Christopher of Atascadero, Calif.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. George Fletcher, the Rev. Dallas Stallings, the Rev. Warren Bolling, and Rev. Eugene Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Tom Ashton, Richard Nagley, Albert Felicio Jr., Gene Hancock, Brian Gentry, and Albert Felicio III.

Katherine V. Swartz
Katherine Virginia Swartz, 79, of Winchester died Monday Aug. 13, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Swartz was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Gore, the daughter of Edgar Paul and Ella Elizabeth Anderson.
She was a homemaker.
She married Donald Lee Swartz in 1944 in Winchester. Mr. Swartz died Oct. 1, 1993.
Survivors are a sister, Helen Printz of Winchester; and a brother, Frederick O. Anderson, of Stephenson.
Graveside rites will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shenandoah Memorial Park with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home, Winchester.
Donald W. Zombro
Donald Wilson “Bill” Zombro, 84, of Berryville died Sunday Aug. 12, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Zombro was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Clarke County, the son of Joseph E. and Minnie Edwards Zombro.
He had worked at the Byrd orchards and was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Crums United Methodist Church.
He married Amanda I. McKee June 6, 1939, in Winchester. Mrs. Zombro died May 3, 1995.
Graveside rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenhill Cemetery in Berryville with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.
Jewell I. Campbell
Jewell Irene Campbell, 73, of 539 W. King Street, Strasburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Campbell was born Dec. 16, 1927, in Rockingham County, the daughter of Irvin Delmar and Stella Rion Shifflett.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Strasburg Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for 38 years, and served as its treasurer and secretary. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Virginia State Firefighters Association; was past president of the Northern Virginia Firefighters Auxiliary and past president of the Strasburg Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving with her husband, Johnie Carl Campbell are four sons, Gary C. Campbell of Strasburg, Tommy W. Campbell of Toms Brook, Jimmy A. Campbell of Harrisonburg and Eddie Campbell of Woodstock; two daughters, Donna C. Stacey of Beaver Springs, Pa. and Melissa C. Estep, of Maurertown; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A son, Jerry N. Campbell, is deceased.
Graveside rites will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick with Rev. William Erbach Sr. officiating.
Pallbearers will be members of the Strasburg Volunteer Fire Department.
The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

William W. Nickels Jr.
William Washington Nickels Jr., 76, of Waterford, died Thursday, February 1, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Nickels was born May 8, 1924, in Bristol, Tenn. He was an attorney and practiced law in Loudoun County for many years.
He was educated at Davidson College, Duke University, and the University of Virginia School of Law.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, with the rank of lieutenant.
He had been a mayor of Leesburg and president of the Loudoun Bar Association. He was a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church and a trustee of Catoctin Presbyterian Church in Waterford. He was a Mason, former president of the Waterford Foundation, and a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Loudoun Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Board of Directors.
He was married to Shirley Becker.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Margaret Nickels Larsen of Waterford and Mary Beth Roberts of Richmond; two sons, William Washington Nickels III of Orange and Harry Becker Nickels of Lincoln; a brother, George Nickels of Front Royal; a sister, Peggy Yarbro of Bristol, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Catoctin Presbyterian Church, Waterford, with the Rev. Martha Z. Miller officiating.
Memorials may be made to Catoctin Presbyterian Church or the Hospice of Northern Virginia.

David F. Roberts III
David Frederick “Dave” Roberts III, 65, of HC 71, Box 45BB, Augusta, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Roberts was born April 4, 1935, in Frederick, Md., the son of David F. Roberts Jr. and Nellie Cole Roberts. He was a truck driver for Hill Construction in Clarksville, Md., and Kettlers Brothers Construction Co. in Gaithersburg, Md.
He had attended Augusta Assembly of God Church.
He married Elsie Lamm on April 15, 1965, in Frederick.
Surviving with his wife are five stepsons, James K. Flohr and Larry Flohr, both of Frederick, Clifford Flohr of Woodsboro, Md., and Robert Flohr and Ronald Flohr, both of Augusta; a stepdaughter, Debbie Anderson of Frederick; a half brother, Franklin B. Blank of Frederick; two half sisters, Mary Harding of Frederick and Barbara Portner of Hagerstown, Md.; 11 step grandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with Brother James Hawkins and Brother Frank Myers officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, Md.

Wilber L. Shoup
Wilber Lee Shoup, 91, of 3602 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the home of his son in Winchester.
Mr. Shoup was born Oct. 9, 1909, in Arkansas City, Kan., the son of Charles and Edna Shoup. He was an attorney and owner of S&W Realty Property Management Co.
He attended Arkansas City High School, Arkansas City College, and graduated from National City Law School in 1933.
He was in the Navy during World War II and was placed on 24-hour standby while he worked as an attorney at the Pentagon.
He was a member of the Washington Bar Association, the Kansas Demolay, and the Virginia Republican Party. He was a packmaster with the Cub Scouts of America.
He married Virginia Pringle in 1932. Mrs. Shoup died in 1988.
Surviving are a son, Edward T. Shoup of Winchester; a daughter, Virginia L. Weaver of Manassas; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. David Burrough officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Alice L. Cole
Alice Louise “Sue” Cole, 82, of High View, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Cole was born June 27, 1918, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of George Will Elliott and Tella May Marpole Elliott. She had been a seasonal employee with Shenandoah Apple Co-op and National Fruit Product Co.
She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eagles Aerie 824.
She was married to Phillip M. Cole.
Surviving with her husband, of High View, are two daughters, Betty Lewis of High View and Mary Orndorff of Toms Brook; a sister, Tishia Adams of Winchester; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Frederick County.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Adams, Gene Orndorff, Stoney Elliott, Don Johnston, James O’Neal, Russell Atkins, and Charles Kackley.

Arthur L. Nicholson
Arthur Lee Nicholson, 73, of 2237 Taft Circle, Winchester, formerly of Marion, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Nicholson was born July 21, 1927, in Clarksburg, W.Va., the son of William Howard and Gertrude Herrod Nicholson. He was the owner of Federal Tire Co. in Winchester and Marion.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester and Trinity Baptist Church in Marion. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a graduate of West Virginia University.
He married Dorotha Lee Forester on Aug. 3, 1946, in Clarksburg, W.Va.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Jeanne Anderson of Winchester; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. John Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
