Garland R. Ritter
Garland R. Ritter, 88, of Burnt Factory Road, Stephenson, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in a local health care home.
Mr. Ritter was born March 9, 1912, in Winchester, the son of Walter W. and Mattie L. Alsehire Ritter. He worked for Steam Fitters Local 602 in Washington, D.C., for 63 years.
He served with the Navy Seabee’s during World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post 21, Woodmen of the World, and Eagles Aeire 824, all of Winchester. He was a member of Berryville Moose Lodge 2137.
He married Virginia Rachel Van Pelt on July 25, 1942, in Washington, D.C.
His wife survives.
A private graveside service will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Calvin L. Largent Sr.
Calvin Lorraine Largent Sr., 59, of HC-60, Box 86C, Points, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Largent was born Nov. 9, 1941, in Levels, W.Va., the son of William James and Ethel Ginevan Largent. He was an orchard and timber worker.
He was married to Vivian Montgomery.
Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Levels, are four daughters, Cathy Largent of Three Churches, W.Va., Wanda Roy of Moorefield, W.Va., Glenda Rannells of Romney, W.Va., and Vivian Sirk of Augusta, W.Va.; seven sons, Kevin Montgomery and Gregory Largent, both of Paw Paw, W.Va., Patrick Largent of Moorefield, Michael Largent of Rio, W.Va., and Calvin Largent Jr., Adam Largent, and Andrew Largent, all of Points; three brothers, James Largent of Colorado Springs, Colo., Robert Largent of High View, W.Va., and Donald Largent of Levels; three sisters, Rosella Bailey of Levels, Jean Horsey of Dundalk, Md., and Ellen Nestor of Flintstone, Pa.; and 20 grandchildren.
A son, Wilbert Largent, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tearcoat Church of the Brethren, Augusta, with Pastor Ken Dolan officiating. Burial will be in Levels Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Largent, Cruz Rodriquiz, Melvin Bixler, Donald Largent, Eddie Sirk, and Billy Horsey.

Paul Mauzy
Paul Mauzy, 79, of 5793 Northwestern Pike, Gore, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Mauzy was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Frederick County, the son of Otis and Ada Largent Mauzy. He was a loader operator for 35 years at Unimin Corp. in Gore.
He was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Hayfield and a former member of Gore Volunteer Fire Company.
He was married to Myrtle McDonald, who died Oct. 17, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Paul C. “Connie” Mauzy of Winchester and Robert L. Mauzy of Gore; two sisters, Irene Rhodes and Margaret McDaniel, both of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Patricia “Patsy” Combs, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Jim Sandefur officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Hayfield.
Pallbearers will be Robert Mauzy Jr., Jeff Shanholtz, Mike Mauzy, Darren Shanholtz, Greg Trenum, and Tony Culp.

Norma Goad
Norma “Nell” Goad, 71, of Conrad Court, Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Goad was born July 5, 1929, in Ansted, W.Va., the daughter of Thomas and Edna Nutter Grimmett. She was a secretary for the General Services Administration and retired in 1977.
She married Kenneth Gene Goad on May 11, 1964, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Goad died Oct. 1, 1999.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Gregory Goad of Inwood, W.Va.; a daughter, Sandra Gail Goldblatt of Front Royal; three sisters, Peggy Pridemore of Ansted, Betty Taylor of Elkhart, Ind., and Hazel Mills of Winchester; and a brother, Thomas Grimmett of Ansted.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home.

Joel J. Gowan
Joel J. Gowan, 62, of Frederick County, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Gowan was born March 21, 1938, in Annapolis, Md., the son of Herbert B. and Laura Almyra Barnes Gowan. He was retired and had served in the Navy.
He was a member of Howards Chapel in Frederick County and the Moose Lodge of Culpeper.
He married Janet K. Wheatley on July 25, 1990, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mary C. Wolfe of Hagerstown; two sons, Jeremy D. Kegarise and Steven Heinen, both of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Howards Chapel Methodist Church, with the Rev. Isaac Lee Luttrell officiating. Burial will be in Howards Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Hensley, Jeremy Kegarise, Steven Heinen, Ronald Demski, Jonathan Tyler, and Calvin Tyler Jr.

George E. Hess
George E. Hess, 83, of Hilltop House Nursing Home, Winchester, formerly of Waynesboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in the nursing home.
Mr. Hess was born Jan. 24, 1917, in Waynesboro, the son of Andrew M. and Mary K. Eyler Hess. He retired from Frick Forest Products in 1981.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a 1936 graduate of Waynesboro High School.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, and William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, all of Waynesboro.
He married Sarah E. Good on May 31, 1946, in Williamsport, Pa. Mrs. Hess died Oct. 22, 1971.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara A. Grubb of White Post; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with the Rev. Richard A. Seaks officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Waynesboro.
H. Elwood Catlett Sr.
H. Elwood Catlett Sr., 73, of 2432-149 Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Catlett was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Gore, the son of Harry E. and Rosa Dunlap Catlett. He worked at Unimin Corp. in Gore for 37 years as a power shovel operator.
He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Apple Valley Bottle Club.
He married Mary K. Yowell on March 1, 1950, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Harry E. Catlett Jr. of Winchester; a daughter, Vicki A. Catlett of Winchester; four brothers, Ralph Lee Catlett of Stephens City, William Catlett and Donald W. Catlett, both of Winchester, and James H. Catlett of Paw Paw, W.Va.; two sisters, Bessie Pitcock of Stephens City and Kay Cowgill of Paw Paw; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hebron Baptist Church, Gore, with the Rev. George Reed officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Gore.

Mary Christina “Chris” Harper Braithwaite, 47, of 109 Overlook Drive, Cross Junction, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.s
Ms. Braithwaite was born July 28, 1953, in Winchester, the daughter of Robert B. and Nancy Ware Edwards Harper. She was a French teacher at Handley High School and retired after 20 years.
She earned her B.A. degree in French from Lynchburg College and did graduate work at the Université de Nice.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and the Retired Teachers Association.
She was formerly married to Harry L. Braithwaite III of Frederick County.
Surviving are two daughters, Megan Christina Braithwaite and Laura Lee Braithwaite, both of Frederick County; a sister, Marsha Ann Gochenour of Frederick County; and a brother, Philip Edwards Harper of Clarke County.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Peter Ford and Paul Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Howard Donnally Shelton, 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Shelton was born March 12, 1914, in Tamarack, N.C., the son of Joseph Charlie and Virginia Mae Wilson Shelton. He retired in 1979 from Blake Construction in Washington, D.C., as a superintendent of steel construction.
He was a Navy veteran and a member of American Legion Post 104 in Gaithersburg, Md., and Rodman Local 201 in Washington, D.C. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs.
He was married to Vivian Margaret Harden for 50 years.
Surviving with his wife are two sisters, Docia Greer and Nell Brown, both of Creston, N.C.; and two brothers, Fred Shelton and Raymond Shelton, both of Creston.
A son, Donald Kent Shelton, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew Cooney officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with military honors accorded by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

Clara E. Proffitt
Clara E. Morris Proffitt, 88, of 337 Elm Park Drive, Roanoke, formerly of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.
Mrs. Proffitt was born May 24, 1912, in Petersburg, W.Va., the daughter of Charles Edward and Daisy Judy Alt. She was a snack bar manager at National Fruit Product Co. and retired after 40 years.
She was married to Arvel Proffitt, who died Sept. 19, 1998. Her first husband, Garland Morris, died in 1955.
Surviving are three sisters, Vergie Bell of Winchester, Rosa McGueniss of Keyser, W.Va., and Mernie Eskridge of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a brother, Glen Alt of Winchester.
