James J. Lofton Jr.
James Jackson “Heavy” Lofton Jr., 77, of Apprentice Lane, White Post, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Lofton was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Winchester, the son of James J. and Rosa Franks Lofton. He retired in 1977 as a mechanic with Novick Transfer. He was co-owner of Lofton’s CB Sales.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a former member of Shawnee Fire Company and the Fraternal Order of Police in Winchester.
He was married to Edna Largent. His first wife, Irene E. Peer Lofton, died in 1979.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Charles R. Lofton and Gary A. Lofton, both of Frederick County, Robert L. Lofton of Leland, N.C., and Louis J. Lofton of Winchester; a brother, Glenn Lofton of Pennsylvania; a stepson, Kenneth Largent Jr. of Spotsylvania; four stepdaughters, Bonnie L. Stokes, Connie M. Dailey, Terry G. Wymer, and Patty J. Saville, all of Frederick County; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with Larry W. Veach officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Robert Lofton Jr., Mike Suenken, Larry Shaffer Jr., Richard Lofton, Matthew Lofton, and Charles R. Lofton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Olive G. Johnson
Olive Geneva Johnson, 84, of HC 61, Box 56D, Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 4, 1916, in Laureldale, W.Va., the daughter of Wilbur and Hattie Shears Shillingburg. She attended the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney, W.Va., and was a cook for Holiday Inn in Winchester.
She married Wilbur L. Johnson on Jan. 20, 1938, in Beaver Run, W.Va.
Surviving with her husband are two sons, Wallace L. Johnson of Mechanicsville, Md., and Elmer L. Johnson of St. Mary’s, W.Va.; a daughter, Linda Markle of Keyser, W.Va.; a brother, Mike Shillingburg of Keyser; a sister, Hazel Urice of Keyser; a half sister, Wilma Turner of Keyser; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Lawrence Shillingburg and the Rev. Lloyd Heatwole officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
Pallbearers will be Randy Johnson, Danny Johnson, Keith Markle, Rodney Johnson, Greg Staggs, and Steven Curtiss.

H. Elwood Catlett Sr.
H. Elwood Catlett Sr., 73, of 2432-149 Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Catlett was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Gore, the son of Harry E. and Rosa Dunlap Catlett. He worked at Unimin Corp. in Gore for 37 years as a power shovel operator.
He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Apple Valley Bottle Club.
He married Mary Kay Yowell on March 1, 1950, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Harry E. Catlett Jr. of Winchester; a daughter, Vicki A. Catlett of Winchester; four brothers, Ralph C. Catlett of Stephens City, William C. Catlett and Donald C. Catlett, both of Winchester, and James C. Catlett of Paw Paw, W.Va.; two sisters, Bessie Pitcock of Stephens City and Kay Cowgill of Paw Paw; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hebron Baptist Church, Gore, with the Rev. George Reed officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Gore.

Debra Lynn Booth, 39, of 525 Georgetown Court, Stephens City, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Booth was born Dec. 13, 1961, in Lisbon, Portugal, the daughter of George and Naomi Jamieson King. She was a homemaker and a member of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church.
She married Paul Lyle Booth on Feb. 13, 1988, in Alexandria.
Surviving with her husband are her parents, of Woodbridge; and two sisters, Kathryn Regio of Inwood, W.Va., and Linda Riddle of Orlando, Fla.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church, with Pastor Eric Farel officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City.

Wilma Arvella Ruckman, 81, of the Long Term Care Center, Romney, W.Va., formerly of Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.
Mrs. Ruckman was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Kirby, W.Va., the daughter of Kerwood and Cora Haines Combs. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Augusta Church of Christ and a charter member of Kirby American Legion Auxiliary 134.
She was married to Walter Ruckman.
She was the last member of her immediate family. She had made her home with Carleen Martin for 25 years.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with Pastor Robert Jeffreys officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Augusta.

Charles H. Gordon
Charles H. Gordon, 77, of 115 Butternut Drive, Stephens City, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Gordon was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Wegley, Pa., the son of David and Bessie Kirk Gordon. He was a tool and die making consultant and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Sherando Presbyterian Church, Hagerstown Elks, and Winchester Moose Lodge. He was a charter member of the New Saint Andrews Society of the Shenandoah Valley.
He married Imogene Goodhart on Nov. 24, 1945, in Kent, Ohio.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Cynthia Fornoth of San Dimas, Calif.; a son, Thomas Gordon of Lakeview, Ore.; a brother, John Gordon of Palmyra, Pa.; and a sister, Helen Wentz of Keego Harbor, Mich.
A memorial service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sherando Presbyterian Church, Stephens City, with the Rev. Lisa Everhart officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Kent.

Elizabeth Vallandingham Palmer, 85, of 82 Island Ford Lane, Strasburg, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in MontVue Nursing Home, Luray.
Mrs. Palmer was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Owenton, Ky., the daughter of James Gayle and Lucy Lee Vallandingham. She was a Latin and English teacher at Strasburg High School and had retired.
She was married to Capt. Fitzhugh L. Palmer Jr.
Surviving are three daughters, Lucy Palmer Edmison of Strasburg, Catherine Palmer Tessieri of Richmond, and Nancy Palmer Clausen of State College, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
A daughter, Susan Palmer Dunham, is deceased.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Clarence Lee Lupton, 69, of 2154 Fairfax Pike, White Post, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Lupton was born Aug. 29, 1931, in Opequon, the son of Clarence F. and Isadora Rudy Lupton. He was a foreman and heavy equipment operator with Buckley & Lages Construction Co. and retired after 39 years.
He was in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955.
He was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 47, Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, the Prostate Support Group, and the Defibrillator Support Group. He was a former member of Apple Valley Square Dancers.
He married Elizabeth Mae Grove on Aug. 26, 1962, in Leetown United Methodist Church, Leetown, W.Va.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Sandra L. Brown of Betterton, Md.; a son, Dale E. Lupton of Stephens City; two sisters, Mary Sealock and Betty Settle, both of Front Royal; two brothers, Maynard Lupton of Front Royal and James Lupton of White Post; and a grandson.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Herb Seemann officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with military honors by Winchester VFW Post 2123.

Nathan Ebenezer Compher Sr., 77, of Purcellville, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Loudoun Long Term Care Center, Leesburg.
Mr. Compher was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Hillsboro, the son of Ebenezer and Lula Compher. He was a member of Hamilton/Thompson Masonic Lodge of Purcellville.
He was married to Betty Compher for 52 years.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Nathan “Hap” Compher of Purcellville and Pete Compher of Stephens City; three daughters, Kate Chambers of Purcellville, Patti Morrison of Berryville, and Dale DeCarlo of Hamilton; a brother, Herbert C. Compher of Frederick County; two sisters, Rose Griffing of Winchester and Janet Gardner of Berryville; and 11 grandchildren.

Milton M. Hawkins Jr.
Milton Mortimore “Mouke” and “Junior” Hawkins Jr., 76, of Washington, Va., formerly of Front Royal, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Hawkins was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Rappahannock, the son of Milton Mortimore and Stella Nicholsen Hawkins.
He was a part-time security officer for Sectex Security at the EPA site in Front Royal. He retired in 1988 after 55 years with Avtex in Front Royal.
He was a veteran of World War II with the 35th Infantry Division.
He helped organize the first Boy Scout chapter in Washington, Va., in 1949 and was a Boy Scout master for eight years. He was an avid hiker in Shenandoah National Park.
He was married to Dorothy Burke for 55 years.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Ronald Davidson Hawkins of Prince William County and Stewart Willis Hawkins of Illinois; three sisters, Bessie H. Brown of Front Royal, Ada H. Turner of Roanoke, and Elise H. Boswell of Bowie, Md.; a brother, Earl Hawkins of Luray; and a grandson.
A graveside service was Monday at Washington Masonic Cemetery, with the Rev. Jennings Hobson officiating.
