Evelyn E. Dennis
Evelyn Emma Dennis, 77, of Laurel, Md., formerly of High View, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Laurel Hospital.
Mrs. Dennis was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Watertown, N.Y., the daughter of Chester L. and Laura Bellil Morrison. She had worked at Capon Springs and Farms in Capon Springs, W.Va.
She was married to Bernard William “Bill” Dennis, who died Oct. 14, 1992.
Surviving are four daughters, Gladys M. Breeden of Crozet, Barbara J. Melton of Gulfport, Miss., Audrey C. Pfeffer of Laurel, and Mary V. Harris of Red Jacket, W.Va.; a brother, Donald Lasky of Kingman, Ariz.; four sisters, Charlotte Wilson of St. George, Utah, Ellen Yahn of North Carolina, Margaret Morrison of Columbus, Ohio, and Jean Blair of Kingman.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Greg Kenney officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery, High View.
The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Dana B. Acord
Dana B. Acord, 57, of Christiansburg, formerly of Frederick County, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Montgomery Regional Hospital, Christiansburg.
Mrs. Acord was born March 20, 1943, in Winchester, the daughter of Henry S. and Una Dorton Bursey. She was one of the creators of Patrick Enterprises in Pembroke.
She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Christiansburg, and a 1962 graduate of James Wood High School.
She was married to Kenneth R. Acord.
Surviving with her husband are five sons, H. Jefferson Acord, Clifton K. Acord, and Glen C. Acord, all of Christiansburg, Ted A. Acord of Pembroke, and Tim K. Acord of Floyd; a twin sister, Joanne White of Stephens City; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral was Thursday in Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, with the Rev. Jerry Mann officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.
Joy A. Harris
Joy Ann Harris, 60, of Fargo, N.D., died Dec. 12, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Harris was born May 9, 1940, in Winchester, the daughter of Charles A. and Helen Gray Taylor.
She was married to Charles E. Harris.
Surviving are three daughters, Helen Kay Harris, Danita Jo O’dell, and Cheryl Lynn; a son, Charles E. Harris; two sisters, Theresa Taylor and Cleola Taylor; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral was on Monday, Dec. 18.

Janet R. Funk
Janet Ruth Funk, 79, of California, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Bayside Nursing Center, Lexington Park, Md.
Ms. Funk was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Sugar Grove, W.Va., the daughter of Claude and Linnie May Simmons Eckard. She had worked in the food service division of Shenandoah Hospital in Woodstock for eight years and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in Strasburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Ann Mason of Winchester; a son, Donald Byers of California, Md.; a sister, Dorothy Arrowood of Sebring, Fla.; a brother, Raymond Eckard of LeBelle, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Kay Francis Miller, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Garden, Front Royal.

Irene Shipper
Irene Shipper, 90, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Mrs. Shipper was born in Jones Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Robert and Vienna Landis Kees. She was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church.
She was married to Edward Paul Shipper.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Shipper, with whom she lived, and Reginald Shipper of Jones Springs; five daughters, Maxine Behr of Abington, Md., Wanda Tomlin of Essex, Md., Nancy Franks of Winchester, Margaret Myers of Freemont, Ohio, and Geneva Barnhart of Inwood, W.Va.; a brother, Ward Kees of Martinsburg; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
A son, Edward L. Shipper, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Raymond Jones officiating. Burial will be in Hedgesville Assembly of God Cemetery.

Cheryl M. Triplett
Cheryl Mantz Triplett, 50, of 150 Lone Willow Lane, Gore, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Triplett was born Jan. 23, 1950, in Winchester, the daughter of Merrell and Dolly Slonaker Mantz. She was a Realtor with ERA Oakcrest Realty Inc. in Winchester.
She was a 1967 graduate of Hampshire High School and a member of Ebenezer Christian Church near Gore.
She married Charles E. Triplett on June 8, 1996, in Winchester.
Surviving with her husband and her parents, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., are a son, Jerry D. “J.D. ” Hiett of Gore; a daughter, Melissa A. Johnston of Winchester; two stepdaughters, Lisa Quince of Whitacre and Kim Triplett of Tysons Corner; three brothers, Jerry Mantz, Jeff Mantz, and Steve Mantz, all of Capon Bridge; three sisters, Jenny LaFollette, Debbie Maphis, and Susie Barry, all of Capon Bridge; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Christian Church, with the Rev. Douglas Smith, the Rev. Don Stotler, Dr. Ewart H. Wyle Jr., the Rev. Greg Kenney, Bob Morris, and Dr. Ken Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Margaret J. Willey
Margaret Jane Willey, 82, of 100 Massanutten Circle, Strasburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.
Miss Willey was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Middletown, the daughter of James Lawson and Mary Elizabeth Maihl Willey.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from Middletown High School and Winchester Business College.
She was a docent and member of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, a life member of the Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of Winchester Women of the Moose Lodge 1367 and the “Gadabouts” of the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, including her great-niece and caregiver, Joan Coffman of Strasburg.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, Middletown, with the Rev. David R. Brosnan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Middletown.
Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Charles G. Wilson
Charles Grover Wilson, 85, of 2609 Cornerstone Circle, Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Wilson was born July 12, 1915, in Rio, W.Va., the son of Grover and Minnie E. Combs Wilson. He was a mechanic with Truck Services and J. Schoenenman Co.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of First Assembly of God Church.
He married Gladys White on Nov. 2, 1967, in Winchester. His first wife, Mary Loy Wilson, died in April 1967.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Paul Lee Wilson of Berryville and James Carl Wilson of Winchester; a daughter, Betty Katherine Wilson Johnson of Minneapolis; a stepdaughter, Judith Diane Harmon Barton of Richmond; a stepson, William Edward Harmon of Houston; a sister, Victoria Henderson of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a brother, Woodrow Wilson of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A son, Harold Allen Wilson, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Hickey officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Maxwell K. Woltz
Maxwell Kenneth Woltz, 87, of 144 Taylor Ave., Salem, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000.
Mr. Woltz was born April 14, 1913, in Salem, the son of Maxwell Farrar and Irma P. Killian Woltz. He retired in 1976 as an administrative officer in the personnel department of Hercules Inc. at the Radford Army Arsenal. He had been an assistant county agricultural agent for Roanoke County.
After schooling in Salem, Luray, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada, he attended the University of Virginia.
He was a longtime member of the Salem Historical Society and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and previously served on the council of College Lutheran Church.
He was an avid sportsman. He had an ownership interest in the Salem Rebels professional baseball club and, later, in the Salem Rebels professional hockey team, the first professional hockey franchise in the South. He served on the boards of both organizations.
He was married to Jean Smith for 43 years.
Surviving with his wife is a brother, Judge Robert K. Woltz of Winchester.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Timothy Vance officiating. A graveside service for the family will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem.

Kenneth E. Combs
Kenneth E. “Kenny” Combs, 84, of Berryville Pike, Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Mr. Combs was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Needmore, W.Va., the son of Sanford I. and Leona Mae Tusing Combs. He had been a truck driver for National Fruit Product Co. for more than 40 years.
He was a corporal in the Marine Corps during World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre.
He was a member of Eagles Aerie 824, VFW Post 2123, American Legion Post 21, Gainesboro Volunteer Fire Company, Round Hill Volunteer Fire Company, and the Happy Days Club of Opequon Presbyterian Church. He served on the board of directors of the Winchester-Frederick County Conservation Club and was past president of the Teamsters Local 29.
He was married to Beulah Marie Hickerson, who died April 15, 1990. His first wife was Hilda Grubbs, who died Dec. 6, 1941. His second wife, Margaret Newlin, died Dec. 28, 1967.
Surviving are three daughters, Genevieve “Jenny” Schuller and Patricia Duvall, both of Berryville, and Penny Ritter of Winchester; a son, Kenneth Newlin of Nokesville; a stepson, Harry Hickerson of Lehigh, Fla.; a sister, Edna C. Pingley of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A stepson, James Hickerson, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, with Pastor David Witt officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123.

Marjorie S. Coulson
Marjorie Smith Coulson, 72, of Frederick Avenue, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Culpeper.
Mrs. Coulson was born April 21, 1928, in Frederick County, the daughter of Charles Smith and Margaret Dorton Smith. She had worked as a press operator at Capitol Records and a cafeteria assistant at Virginia Avenue School.
She was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church.
She married Wilson H. Coulson on Sept. 13, 1952, in Frederick County.
Surviving with her husband are her stepmother, Theda Smith of Front Royal; four sons, David C. Coulson and Dean L. Coulson, both of Stephens City, Dennis L. Coulson of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and Dwayne A. Coulson of Strasburg; a brother, Harry Franklin Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a half sister, Deborah Szablak of Richmond; three half brothers, Richard Smith and John Smith, both of Front Royal, and Jack Smith of Port Republic, Md.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Herbert K. Seemann officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Memorial Cemetery, Frederick County.
