May M. Starnes
May Marguerite Starnes, 84, of 2320 Locust Lane, Hummelstown, Pa., formerly of Augusta, W.Va., died Thursday, February 1, 2001, in Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Hershey, Pa.

Mrs. Starnes was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Kirby, W.Va., the daughter of George and Cleresa Loy Hott. She was a seamstress with Hesteco in Hummelstown.

She was a member of Hott’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Kirby, W.Va.

She was married to Jesse Starnes, who died Aug. 18, 1979.

Surviving are a son, Dalton D. Starnes of Hummelstown; a daughter, Cathleen L. Bancroft of Hummelstown; three brothers, Thurman Hott of Middlebrook, Woodrow Hott of Shanks, W.Va., Benjamin Hott of Romney, W.Va.; two sisters, Armetha Baker of Romney and Arcevella Pugh of Hedgesville, W.Va.; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with Pastor Robert Jeffreys officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Richard Plaugher
Richard “Dick” Plaugher, 75, of Central Avenue, Moorefield, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in the E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center, Baker, W.Va.

Mr. Plaugher was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Bayard, W.Va., the son of James E. and Mary Bonner Plaugher. He served with the Marines during World War II.

He attended Moorefield Assembly of God Church and was a member of the John M. Golliday American Legion Post 64.

Surviving with his wife, Eula Weese Plaugher, are a son, James R. Plaugher of Winchester; two daughters, Brenda Harvey of Moorefield and Debbie Hibbard of Fisher, W.Va.; a half brother, Robert Helmick of Horseshoe Run, W.Va.; three sisters, Juanita Hawk of Petersburg, W.Va., Carolyn Tasker of Mt. Lake Park, Md., and Clarett Hawk of North Carolina; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fraley Funeral Home, Moorefield, with the Rev. Alton Lee officiating. Burial will be in Newhouse Cemetery, Rig, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Viola M. Kesner
Viola Marie Kesner, 56, of Augusta, W.Va., died Thursday, February 1, 2001, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mrs. Kesner was born June 15, 1944, in Romney, the daughter of Andy and Dora Marie Blackburn Kesner.

Surviving are four sons, Eric Kesner of Augusta, Eddie Miller, Joey Miller, and Ricky Miller, all of Baltimore; two daughters, Sharon Kesner of Augusta and Terri Miller of Baltimore; a brother, Robert Blackburn of Romney; three sisters, Thelma Garrison of Smith, Ala., Wilma Kuykendall and Francis Mabry, both of Romney; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Audra E. Hackett
Audra E. Hunt Hackett, 76, of Brookfield, Conn., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Danbury Hospital, Danbury, Conn.

Arrangements with Jones Funeral Home are incomplete.

Randolph Shumaker
Randolph Shumaker of Churchville, formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Churchville.

Arrangements with Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, are incomplete.

Eugene H. Hisey Sr.
Eugene Henry Hisey Sr., 86, of Front Royal, died Feb. 2, 2001, at his home. Arrangements, handled by Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home in Front Royal, are incomplete at this time.

John L. Burkett III
John L. Burkett III, 28, of Falling Waters, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, as a result of a car accident near Greencastle, Pa.

Mr. Burkett was born March 8, 1972, in Winchester, the son of John L. Burkett Jr. and Jacqueline Murphy Burkett. He was a deputy with the Sheriff’s Department of Berkeley County, W.Va.

He was a 1990 graduate of Hedgesville High School and attended Shepherd College. He graduated in December 2000 from the West Virginia State Police Academy and earned a Criminal Justice degree from Glenville State.

He was a member of Hedgesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving with his parents, of Falling Waters, is a sister, Rebecca Burkett Crown of Martinsburg, W.Va.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hedgesville High School, Hedgesville, W.Va., with the Rev. Terri S. Cofiell, the Rev. Dean Plumlee, and Police Chaplain Warren Watts officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the South Berkeley Chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Inwood, W.Va.

Mary Starnes
Mary “Mae” Starnes, 84, of Hummelstown, Pa., formerly of Augusta, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Hershey, Pa.

Preston C. Birkett
Preston Codelle Birkett, 74, of 155 Dodge Ave., Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Birkett was born March 30, 1926, in Pulaski, the son of James and Nellie Schenoltz Birkett. He had been a carpenter.

He was married to Catherine Tumblin, who died Dec. 26, 1982.

Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Pierce of Winchester, Rita Wines of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Donna Alamood of Blacksburg; a sister, Helen Grove of Winchester; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Betty Boyd, is deceased.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Gary Felton officiating. Burial will be private.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Anna M. Wymer
Anna Mae Wymer, 75, of 718 Ross St., Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Wymer was born May 1, 1925, in Strasburg, the daughter of Charles and Nora Bedlow Wolford. She was a member of Winchester Church of God.

She married Leonard E. Wymer on Dec. 1, 1977, in Winchester. Mr. Wymer died March 18, 1997.

Surviving are four sons, William “Jim” Lindamood of Stephens City, Paul “Mo” Lindamood of Winchester, Charles Santmyers of Strasburg, and Jim Santmyers of Front Royal; three daughters, Ruby Santmyers of Front Royal, and Barbara Heishman and Ruth Dunlap, both of Winchester; a brother, Charles Wolford of Clearbrook; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A son, Ray Lindamood, is deceased.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. Darrell Waller officiating.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Winchester/Frederick County Unit, 1804 Valley Ave., Winchester 22601.

Glenna V. Eaton
Glenna Virginia Eaton, 66, of Yellow Spring, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.

Mrs. Eaton was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Yellow Spring, the daughter of Virgil and Lona Anderson Oates. She was a bookkeeper for Yellow Spring Mill and assistant director of Camp Rim Rock near Yellow Spring. She was also a home health care provider.

She married Clifton E. “Skip” Eaton on Dec. 14, 1957, in Winchester. Mr. Eaton died Nov. 16, 1995.

Surviving are a son, Gary C. Eaton of Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Cheryl McCauley of Stephens City, Vicki Smith of Wardensville, W.Va., and Kristie Tewalt of Front Royal; two brothers, Richard “Boozer” Oates of High View, W.Va., and Roland Oates of Fredericksburg; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery near Yellow Spring, with Minister Richard Ridgeway officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to Capon Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 366, Capon Springs, W.Va. 26823.

Larry D. Burcham
Larry Dale Burcham, 59, of Middletown, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Burcham was born April 11, 1941, in Winchester, the son of Brady Lawrence and Frances Smith Burcham. He was a landscaper and a construction worker.

He was in the Army National Guard and a member of Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg for 30 years. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Tri-State Bluegrass Association, and the National Rifle Association of America.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving with his parents, of Middletown, is a sister, Janet Lorraine Burcham Sonner of Toms Brook.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lois I. Oren
Lois Irene Oren, 88, of 1418 Trapp Hill Road, Berryville, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Oren was born Aug. 24, 1912, in Powell, Ky., the daughter of Thomas Morehead and Nannie May Daniel Morehead. She was a retired elementary school teacher in Tipp City, Ohio.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren, Tipp City.

She married Harold Alva Oren on May 9, 1936. Mr. Oren died Oct. 28, 1996.

Surviving are a daughter, Deb Ralph of Mims, Fla.; a son, Robert Oren of Berryville; a brother, Les Morehead of Beaver Creek, Ohio; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren in Tipp City. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery, New Carlisle, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren, 7240 S. Peters Road, Tipp City, Ohio 45371.

Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, is handling arrangements.

Eugene M. Johnson
Eugene Merlin Johnson, 60, of Baltimore, formerly of Winchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore.

Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 18, 1941, in Boyce, the son of Bertha Nickens.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine B. Johnson; two brothers, John Henry Laws Jr. and Noah A. Laws, both of Winchester; a daughter, Pamela J. Johnson of Baltimore; and a grandson.

A funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vaughn Green Funeral Home, Baltimore. Burial will be in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, Md.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

Alice L. Cole
Alice Louise Cole, 82, of High View, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home.

Arrangements with Jones Funeral Home are incomplete.

Katherine M. Reid
Katherine Mae Reid, 79, of Clearbrook, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Sarasota, Fla.

Mrs. Reid was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Millville, W.Va., the daughter of Bernard Ashley and Mary Agnes Anderson Mills.

She retired after 40 years with J.J. Newberry Co. in Charles Town, W.Va., and McCroys Co. in Winchester.

She was a life-long member of Charles Town Baptist Church, where she was in the church choir. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1028 of Charles Town.

She was married to Roy M. Reid. Her first husband was Frank H. Ranalli. Her second husband was Charles Carter.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lazzara of Sarasota; a son, Frank Ranalli of Ranson, W.Va.; two sisters, Ruth Estelle Swope of Ranson and Naomi R. Holder of Halltown, W.Va.; a brother, Wallace “Barney” Mills of Ranson; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A daughter, Judy Ann Peterson, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Charles Town Baptist Church, with Dr. Wyman Hall officiating. Burial will be in Rest United Methodist Church Cemetery, Clearbrook.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

Memorials may be made to Charles Town Baptist Church, 211 E. Congress St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.
