Lucy M. Owens
Lucy Marie Owens, 95, of Miller Street, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Owens was born Oct. 11, 1905, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Walter and Mary F. Racey Hoover. She retired in 1992 as a production worker for Zeropack and had worked for National Fruit Product Co.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She married Charles J. Owens on March 12, 1924. Mr. Owens died July 17, 1987.

Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Kremer and Ruth Elliott, both of Winchester, and Pauline Welch of Richmond; a brother, Theodore Hoover of Winchester; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ross Welch, Ronald Elliott, Greg Froom, Dana Froom, Harry Elliott, and Leo Clowser.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2732 Martinsburg Pike, Stephenson 22656.

George D. Smith
George Davis Smith, 73, of 122 E. Cecil St., Winchester, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born April 26, 1927, in Amosville, the son of George and Mary Wood Shepherd. He retired from the Virginia Pride Co., where he worked as a fork lift operator.

He was a member of The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob for 30 years. He was a member of the Sons of God Organization and served as a deacon.

He married Julia Katherine Newman on Oct. 19, 1974. His first wife was Viola Smith.

Surviving with his wife are four daughters, Ann Sutton, Ardell Williams, Faye E. Smith, and Margaret Smith, all of Winchester; a son, George D. Smith Jr. of Culpeper; two stepdaughters, Anna Bell Newman of Shenandoah and Sherry Newman of Winchester; two sisters, Emma Young of Falls Church and Rosie Shepherd of Centreville; a brother, Ernest Shepherd of Manassas; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob, Winchester, with Adv. Pr. Elder Clarence Miller officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be members of The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Cartwright Funeral Home.

Clyde W. LaFollette Sr.
Clyde William LaFollette Sr., 73, of Lehew, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. LaFollette was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Lehew, the son of Raymond and Virginia Arnold LaFollette. He was a postmaster of the Lehew Post Office and an Army veteran.

He was a member of VFW Post 2102 in Wardensville, W.Va., and American Legion Post 137 in Capon Bridge, W.Va.

He was married to O’Nile Carrier.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Clyde W. LaFollette Jr. of Mountain Falls, and Chester “Lenny” LaFollette and Rodney M. LaFollette, both of Lehew; a daughter, Kathy Spaid of Yellow Spring, W.Va.; a brother, Glenn “Dan” LaFollette of High View, W.Va.; three sisters, Louise Braithwaite of Lehew, and Wilda Nesmith and Iris Holliday, both of Stephenson; and six grandchildren.

A daughter, Janie Tobin, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Gregory R. Kenney officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery, Lehew.

Pallbearers will be Charles Miller, Ricky Swartz, Harlan Holliday, Harry Holliday, Kevin LaFollette, and Ted Braithwaite.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jeanne W. Borger
Jeanne W. Borger, 72, of Bonnings Drive, Winchester, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, are incomplete.

Sarah E. Clark
Sarah Elizabeth “Pet” Carr Clark, 61, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Clark was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Cherry Run, W.Va., the daughter of Marshall and Margie Litten Starliper. She worked at Perfection Garment in Martinsburg and at Calburn Sewing Factory in Hancock, Md.

She owned and operated V&S Contracting and Clark’s Ceramics, both in Berkeley Springs. She worked in housekeeping at The Country Inn and as a bagger at Food Lion, both in Berkeley Springs.

She attended Berkeley Springs Church of Christ and Cherry Run School.

She was married to Vernon Clark. Her first husband was Russell Allen Carr.

Surviving are four daughters, Delores Carr of Martinsburg, Amy Carr and Cheryl Smith, both of Berkeley Springs, and Drema Lloyd of Hagerstown, Md.; two sons, Russell Carr of Berkeley Springs and Piphat Todd Carr of Hedgesville, W.Va.; four sisters, Betty Silver and Oleta Cain, both of Berkeley Springs, Mary Apple of Cherry Run, and Dorothy Stuckey of Martinsburg; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Henry L. Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Sleepy Creek, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Eva L. Fox
Eva Lavina Fox, 81, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Monday Jan. 1, 2001, in Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Mrs. Fox was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Berkeley Springs, the daughter of Patrick and Martha Moss Manley. She worked as a waitress at The Park View Inn and Coolfont Resort, both in Berkeley Springs, before retiring in 1985.

She was a member of Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church and attended North Berkeley Elementary and Berkeley Springs High schools.

She was a member of Ladies of the Moose Chapter 1311, the Ladies Auxiliary of Alderson-Dawson American Legion Post 60, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company, all in Berkeley Springs.

She was married to George W. Fox. Her first husband was Vernon I. Kuykendall.

Surviving are three sons, Ira M. Manley, Vernon I. Kuykendall Jr., and George W. “Bill” Fox Jr., all of Berkeley Springs; three daughters, Carolyn M. Michael, Barbara I. Johnson, and Diana Barker, all of Berkeley Springs; a foster daughter, Norma Jean Wolfe of Austin, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Wayne Frum officiating. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Van W. Kesner
Van Woodrow “Bob” Kesner, 53, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Saturday Dec. 30, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Kesner was born March 21, 1947, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of Elburn H. and Daisy Wilson Kesner. He was a heavy machine operator for Miller & Anderson Corp.

He was a member of Capon Bridge American Legion Post 137, a former member of the Capon Bridge Volunteer Fire Company, and an Army veteran.

He married Sylvia M. “Susie” Haines May 12, 1971, in Cumberland, Md.

Surviving with his wife and mother, of Romney, W.Va., is a son, Terry G. Ludwig of Capon Bridge; a daughter, Cynthia A. Delawder of Petersburg, W.Va.; six brothers, Curtis K. Kesner of Augusta, W.Va., Elburn “Bo” Kesner Sr. of Wardensville, W.Va., and Garland Kesner, Eugene Kesner, Harry Kesner and Melvin Kesner, all of Romney; six sisters, Lucy Whetzel and Ruth Grapes, both of Romney, Dorothy Starnes and Alwilda Corbin, both of Augusta, and Peggy Mayhew and Kay Nickelson, both of Romney; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Capon Bridge Christian Church, with the Rev. Jack Wardrope officiating. Burial will be in Capon Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tom Dick, Roger Hahn, Gary Hahn, Jack Salyers, Kenny Copp, and Donald Wolford.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge.

Elijah A. Profit
Elijah A. Profit, 68, of 356 Packhorse Road, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Profit was born May 9, 1932, in Luttrell County, Ky., the son of John and Lillian Hall Profit. He was a mechanic for Cameron Station in Alexandria.

He was an Army veteran and an avid hunter.

He married Martha Profit on June 28, 1956, in Alexandria. Mrs. Profit died Dec. 9, 1987.

Surviving is a daughter, Sonya Profit of Winchester; a brother, Ray Profit of Lexington; and two sisters, Anna Brown of Alexandria and Emma Kelly of Leesburg.

A son, Johnnie Profit, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Roger Gardener, Maurice Barbour, William Brown, Harry Joe Cheshire Sr., Ray Profit, and Mike DiGarmo.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral at the church.

Rose E. Prather
Rose Etta Prather, 91, of 316 N. Royal Ave., Front Royal, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Prather was born Feb. 9, 1909, in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., the daughter of Frank B. and Mary Frances Milton Bell. She was retired from Martha Washington Restaurant, where she was a short-order cook.

She attended the Winchester Assembly of God.

Surviving are three daughters, Caroline “Sally” DeHaven of Winchester, Patty Lou Cornwell of Front Royal, and Beulah Lee Foster of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; three sons, Marshall Thompson and Raleigh Thompson, both of Upperville, and Marshall Chamblin of Wichita Falls, Texas; two sisters, Frances Speck Gillespie of Harpers Ferry and Nellie Price of Charles Town, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

A daughter, Marie McDonald, is deceased.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, with the Rev. Randy Orndoff officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave., Suite B, Winchester 22601.

Fay M. Glasner
Fay Marie Glasner, 73, of Springfield, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, in Royal Haven Rest Home, Front Royal.

Mrs. Glasner was born Nov. 21, 1927, in New Orleans, the daughter of Peter and May Elgiar Campbell. She was a homemaker.

She married Marvin Glasner May 20, 1947.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Bob Glasner of Chantilly, Jim Glasner of Wichita, Kan., and Gary Glasner of Dothan, Ala.; two daughters, Susan Fowler of Sterling and Karen Lakata of Roanoke; a brother, Henry Campbell of Chicago; two sisters, Rosemary Hymel of Diamond Head, Miss., and Anne Mae Raphael of Metarie, La.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charles R. Smith
Charles Randall Smith, 78, of 120 Johnson St., Westernport, Md., died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Westernport.

Mr. Smith was born in Cumberland, Md., on Dec. 19, 1922, the son of Harry F. and Grace Michael Smith. He retired as the assistant superintendent of engineering with Westvaco Corp. in Luke, Md., after 45 years.

He was a 1940 graduate of Bruce High School. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, having served on a medical transport ship in England and Italy.

He was a 50-year member and past master of Hiram Lodge 103 AF & AM and the Order of the Eastern Star in Westernport. He was a member of Kelly-Mansfield American Legion Post 52 in Piedmont, W.Va., VFW Post 6776 in McCoole, W.Va., the Ala Ghan Shrine Club in Cumberland, the Loyal Order of the Moose in Keyser, W.Va., and the Tri-Towns Lions Club.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, where he was a trustee and chairman of the building committee.

Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Virginia Harlin Smith.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, with the Rev. Meredith Ball and the Rev. Joe Jarrett officiating. Burial will be in Philos Cemetery, with full military honors accorded by members of local veterans organizations.

Memorials may be made to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, Allegany County, Md.
