Inez J. Burke
Inez Jenkins Burke, 85, of Colonial Heights, formerly of Berryville, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Burke was born in Rappahannock County, the daughter of John Golden and Lena Fincham Jenkins. She was a member of Harrowgate Baptist Church in Chester and a former member of Boyce Baptist Church.
She was married to Isaiah Burke. She and her husband formerly resided at Audley Farm.
Surviving are two sons, Ray C. Burke of Hopewell and Forrest L. Burke of Woodbridge; two brothers, Lester O. Jenkins of Chester and James Jenkins of Florida; two sisters, Hilda J. Burke and Beulah J. Payne, both of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Isaiah C. Burke and Carl G. Burke, are deceased.
A graveside service will be at noon Friday in Washington Masonic Cemetery, Rappahannock County, with the Rev. Clinton Lawyer officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights.

Ruth V. Betson
Ruth V. Betson, 78, of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, Md.
Miss Betson was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Harvey Samuel and Gladys Ola Wilt Betson. She worked seasonally with the Paw Paw Orchard and National Fruit until she retired in 1984. She had previously worked at Cutsole Tannery in Paw Paw.
She attended Bethel School in Hampshire County. She was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving are six sisters, Margaret Jack of Cumberland, Md., Patricia Lester of Berryville, and Inez Kerns, Sally Bailey, Janet Galliher, and Betty Betson, all of Paw Paw.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Camp Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw, with the Rev. Herman Goede officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
George J. Bowman
George Junior Bowman, 82, of Stephenson, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, in Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland, Md.
Mr. Bowman was born Sept. 20, 1918, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of E. Frank and Rose Shanholtzer Bowman. He was retired as a supervisor at Forecast Furniture in Winchester.
He was married to Izetta “Jewel” Bowman, who died July 27, 1981.
Surviving is a brother, William R. Bowman of Romney, W.Va.; and two sisters, Nellie K. Smith and Gyneth “Tonnie” Keister, both of Romney.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Greg Bowman, Denny Fincham, Ray Bowman, and Jack Wampler Sr.

F. Weaver Welch Sr.
Frank Weaver Welch Sr., 80, of 1020 Bel Air St., Stephens City, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Welch was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Clarke County, the son of Samuel C. and Gertrude Butler Welch. He was the owner of Veterans Texaco from 1946 until 1986, when he retired.
He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 867, Eagles Aerie 824, the Izaak Walton League of Winchester, America Legion Post 53, Charles Town Turf Club, and Moose Lodge 120 of Martinsburg, W.Va. He was a charter member of Stephens City Fire Company.
He married Jessie Madagan on June 15, 1948, in Hagerstown, Md.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Frank Weaver Welch Jr. and Dennis Ray Welch, both of Stephens City; a sister, Gertrude Sargent of Harrisonburg; a brother, William Lynwood Welch of Stephens City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with David A. Owings officiating.

Rachel Frances “Rae” Healey, 86, of Morgan Street, Winchester, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Lowell, Mass.
Mrs. Healey was born June 2, 1914, in New York, N.Y., the daughter of Harry and Josephine Helen Friebly Badstein. She was a homemaker and a member of Good Shepherd Church.
She married Eugene Thomas Healey in 1942 in Phenix City, Ala.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Lynn Weaver of Lowell; a son, Eugene Thomas Healey of Germantown, Md.; a sister, Patricia Joyce Smith of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Ruth Crum Stotler officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Willie B. Kater
Willie Belle Kater, 80, of South Cameron Street, Winchester, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Miss Kater was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Winchester, the daughter of David M. and Maude V. Harper Kater. She owned and operated rental properties and had worked as a clerk at Kater’s Grocery Store.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Isaac Lee Luttrell officiating.
Pallbearers will be James Hepner, David Allamong, H.T. McGolerick, David T. McGolerick, Douglas Dolan, and Charles Anderson.

William J. Boaz Sr.
William Johnson “Bill” Boaz Sr., 42, of Oates Road, Star Tannery, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Boaz was born Dec. 31, 1957, in Winchester, the son of Claude Raymond and Twyla Virginia Grubbs Boaz. He was a funeral director with Jones Funeral Home.
He was a member of Gravel Springs Lutheran Church.
He married Rella Catherine House on July 5, 1997, in Star Tannery.
Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Star Tannery, are a daughter, Breanna Grace Boaz of Middletown; a son, William Johnson Boaz Jr. of Winchester; a stepson, Michael Allen Hess of Star Tannery; a sister, Carolyn Wilkey of Stephens City; a brother, Claude Raymond Boaz Jr. of Star Tannery; and a grandson.
A stepdaughter, Brandi Nicole Hess, is deceased.

Eva M. Boone
Eva Mae Frances Ryman Boone, 78, of 360 Luray Mobile Home Lane, Luray, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Boone was born April 9, 1922, in Winchester, the daughter of Herbert C. and Lillian V. Helsley Ryman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Luray.
She married Sylvia Martin “S.M.” Boone on Oct. 19, 1960. Mr. Boone died Feb. 14, 1992. Her first husband, Charles L. Nicholas, whom she married in 1941, died April 21, 1957.
Surviving are two daughters, Iris L. Fensterbush of Luray and Shirley A. Self of Sandstone; a son, Roger A. Nicholas of Luray; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Stephens City. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Harry R. Dwyer Sr.
Harry R. Dwyer Sr., 79, of Bluemont, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center, Leesburg.

William J. Lichtenwanger
William John Lichtenwanger, 85, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Lichtenwanger was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Asheville, N.C., the son of John Matthew and Lelia Williams Lichtenwanger. He retired in 1974 after 34 years as head of the music reference section of the Library of Congress.
He was in the Intelligence Branch of the Army Signal Corps at Arlington Hall during World War II, with the rank of staff sergeant.
He graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Musicology.
He was a member of the American Musicology Society, the Music Library Association, and the Sonneck Society.
He was married to Carolyn Elizabeth Creson.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Karen Askins of Ledyard, Conn., and Sarah Abdul-Wahid of Toppenish, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. Burial will be private.
