Calvin J. Britton
Calvin J. Britton, 75, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Britton was born May 1, 1925, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., the son of Jeffrey and Pearl Nestor Britton.
He was a retired construction engineer and worked on the construction of the Harbor Tunnel in Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
He was in the Marine Corps during World War II, with the rank of staff sergeant, and served in the Pacific Theatre with the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, and the Marianas Islands operations. He was a World War II historian.
He had attended public schools in Grafton, W.Va., and was a member of Calvary Bible Church in Berkeley Springs.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Shifflett for 55 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Ann Britton-Jones of Elkton, Md., and Judy Lynn Britton-Talbert of Berkeley Springs; a son, Jerry Calvin Britton of Westminster, Md.; three sisters, Esther Reigle of Glen Burnie, Md., Mildred Merriweather of Olympia, Wash., and Dorlene Cutsail of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Lester Britton of Berea, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Janet Lee Britton, and a son, Joey Scott Britton, are deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor James W. Downey officiating. Burial will be in the Talbert-Britton family Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with military honors accorded by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Maggie Dessa Atkins, 98, of Linden, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

June A. Francisco, 75, of Tipp City, Ohio, formerly of Augusta, W.Va. died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at his home.

Walter T. May
Walter Tennyson May, 85, of White Stone died Sunday Dec. 10, 2000, at his home.
Mr. May was born July 5, 1915, in Oxon Hill, Md., the son of Eugene and Abbey King May.
He retired after 30 years as a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Annandale and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lee Rickard May; two daughters, Deborah May Besley of Clifton and Barbara Lee Icyda of Stuart, Fla.; a brother, Eugene May of Lusby, Md.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Strasburg Christian Church with the Rev. J. Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens in Waterlick.
Pallbearers will be Robert Rickard, Don Rickard, Larry Rickard, Philip May, Ross Icyda, and Lee Icyda.
The family will receive friends at the church following the burial.

Sandra P. Helms
Sandra Pearl Helms, 50, of Haines Drive, Winchester, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her home.
She was born Nov. 19, 1950, in Winchester, the daughter of Cleveland R. and Nancy L. Goliday Jenkins.
She married David L. Helms Feb. 24, 1984, in Springfield.
She was a homemaker and a member of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her parents of Stephens City and her husband of Winchester include two daughters, Shannon Jolliffe and Beth A. Graves, both of Culpeper; a sister, Linda A. Jenkins of Stephens City; a brother, Cleveland R. Jenkins Jr. of Hume; and four grandchildren.
A son, Terry A. Falls, died in 1982.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Eric Farel officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Smith, Cleveland Jenkins III, Ricky Jenkins, Michael Jenkins, Kevin Graves, and Tyson Jolliffe Jr.

Thurston F. Burkholder
Thurston Franklin Burkholder, 83, of 622 Cresthaven Court, Front Royal, died Dec. 11, 2000, at Loving Arms Rest Home, Front Royal.
Mr. Burkholder was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Fairfax County, a son of Lloyd B. and Bertha C. Frenzel Burkholder. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, Strasburg Moose Lodge 403, and a past president of the Middletown Lions Club. He was the retired owner and operator of B & B Welding Co., Inc., and Frank Burkholder & Son Steel Erectors. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II.
Surviving with his wife, Virginia Parks Burkholder, are a daughter, Janet Burkholder Sales, of Clifton Forge; a son, Robert H. Burkholder, of Manassas; four brothers, L.M. Burkholder, of Star Tannery, M. Gordon and Robert W. Burkholder, both of Manassas, and Stanley M. Burkholder, of Broadway; 11 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, Middletown, with the Rev. David R. Brosnan officiating. Burial will be in the National Memorial Park, Falls Church, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Robert E. Burkholder, David A. Munn, Michael J. Graziano, Thomas Richard McSpadden, Richard A. McSpadden Jr., Bobby Henderson, Franklin McSpadden, and Curtis Adkins.

Mary Lee Wilder, 90, of Augusta, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Wilder was born Nov. 8, 1910, in Rose Hill, the daughter of Grover H. and Vinnie B. Serber Brown.
She was married to Gregory Albert Wilder, who died Oct. 22, 1996.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Sue Wilder of Augusta; two sons, Frank E. Wilder of Crofton, Md., and Jessie H. Wilder of Augusta; two sisters, Edith Campbell of Bristol and Tildy Barlow of Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Annapolis, Md.

Seatta M. Minifield
Seatta M. Minifield, 91, of Stephens City, died Friday Dec. 8, 2000, in Winchester.
Mrs. Minifield was born March 23, 1909, in Stephens City, the daughter of Jim and Annie Washington Berger.
She was married to Frank Minifield.
She was a member of the World Wide Church of God in Strasburg.
Surviving are two daughters, Catherine Wallace of Manassas and Mary Hill of Winchester; a son, Kenneth Minifield of Toms Brook; a sister, Esther Gaither of Winchester; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
A daughter, Frances Washington, is deceased.
A funeral will be at noon today at Cartwright Funeral Home with Pastor William Linthicum officiating.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service at the funeral home.
Anna M. Brill
Anna Margaret Brill, 91, formerly of Mountain Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Brill was born Nov. 26, 1909, in Frederick County, the daughter of William H. and Mary B. Sherman Frye.
She was a supply clerk with the Winchester Memorial Hospital and retired in 1980 after 15 years.
She was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church.
She married John Wesley Brill in 1935 in Frederick County. Mr. Brill died Oct. 26, 1984.
Surviving are a son, Donald W. Brill of Shalotte, N.C.; two sisters, Lola Frye Baker and Mary Frye Stotler, both of Winchester; a brother, James Frye of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Erbach and the Rev. Ruth Crum Stotler officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Hulver, Herbert Stotler, Ralph Lowery, Ted Cox, David Owings, and Albert McFarland.

Pearl Elizabeth Legge Thomas, 91, of 388 N. River Road, Middletown, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Thomas was born Sept. 30, 1909, in Frederick County, the daughter of John Edward and Carrie Cammer Legge.
She was retired from Avtex Fibers after 27 years. She was a member of Reliance United Methodist Church.
She was married to Alvin Clyde “A.C.” Thomas. Her first husband was John Harris Sperry.
Surviving are five sons, Jack Sperry of Mt. Jackson, Charlie Sperry of Front Royal, Jerry Thomas, John Thomas, and Denny Thomas, all of Reliance; three daughters, Joan Fitzwater of Stephenson, Linda Funk of Reliance, and Sally Rutherford of Clary; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Connie Fitzwater and Janet Knave, are deceased.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reliance United Methodist Church with the Rev. William N. Wade officiating. Burial will be in Reliance Cemetery.

George Early Smith, 76, of 467 Mumaw Road, Strasburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Shenandoah County, the son of George Henry and Helen Wilson Smith. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 and Moose Lodge 403, both of Strasburg, and Spurmont Lodge 98 AF&AM. He attended Lebanon Lutheran Church.
Surviving is a brother, Jackson A. Smith of Front Royal.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Lee Brumback officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Church Cemetery, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

Lester Edgar Warner, 58, of 369 Evergreen Lane, Bluemont, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Warner was born June 14, 1942, in Winchester, the son of Marshall and Evelyn Keckley Warner. He had formerly worked at the Frederick County Landfill.
He married Sharon Wiley on Feb. 24, 1984, in Bunker Hill, W.Va.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Lester F. Warner and Dwayne D. Warner, both of Winchester; a daughter, Tammy M. Bickert of Winchester; two brothers, Thomas Lee Warner and Marshall Lee Warner, both of Winchester; four grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Harvey L. Warnick officiating. Burial will be private.
