Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

William G. Zirkle
William Godfrey Zirkle, 86, of 3173 Indian Hollow Road, Frederick County, died Friday Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1914 in Winchester, the son of William L. and Katherine Chapman Zirkle.

He retired in 1974 from Potomac Edison as an operation foreman after 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Opequon Presbyterian Church, the Stonewall Ruritan Club, and the Stephens City Lions Club.

A graduate of Fishburn Military Academy, he served as master sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in three Pacific invasions.

He married Anna Fay Supthin Zirkle June 20, 1940, in Winchester. She died Jan. 9, 1995.

Survivors include a nephew with whom he resided, William S. Zirkle of Winchester; and two nieces, Patsy Wray of Lake of the Woods and Nan Mishkin of Sun Valley, Idaho.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Hebron Cemetery with Pastor David Witt officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, 22601.

William Baker Sr.
William “Bill” Baker Sr., 88, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.

Arrangements with Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, are incomplete.

Elwood D. Diehr
Elwood D. Diehr, 65, of Winchester, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Arrangements with Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors are incomplete.

Louise J. Shane
Louise J. Shane, 75, of 102 Sunset Drive, Winchester, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her home.

Arrangements with Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, are incomplete.

Emmett F. Rutherford
Emmett Franklin “Bo” Rutherford, 59, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mr. Rutherford was born Oct. 30, 1940, in Hume, the son of James and Sarah Knight Rutherford. He was a charter member of the Stephens City Moose Lodge.

He and his wife, Shirley R. Rutherford, were married 36 years.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Guy R. Rutherford of Fairfax, and Glen A. Rutherford, and Chris W. Rutherford, both of Front Royal; a daughter, Deborah “Susie” R. Starita of Front Royal; five brothers, William Rutherford of Strasburg, James Rutherford, Roger Rutherford, and Russell Rutherford, all of Front Royal, and Richard Rutherford of Winchester; three sisters, Martha Wood and Jane Moore, both of Front Royal, and Sheila Chirgwin of Las Vegas; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Dad’s Restaurant, Front Royal.

Ruth M. Saville
Ruth M. Saville, 97, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Nice & Cozy Nursing Home, Slanesville, W.Va.

Miss Saville was born Aug. 11, 1903, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Charles E. and Anna Martin Saville. She was a retired elementary teacher who taught for 21 years in Hancock, Md., and 24 years in the Romney, Capon Bridge, and Augusta, W.Va., areas.

She was a member of the Maryland and West Virginia Teachers Association, the National Retired Teachers Association, and the Washington County, Md., and Hampshire County, W.Va., Retired Teachers associations. She was a member of the West Virginia State Horticulture Association, the Capon Bridge Senior Center, and Capon Bridge Christian Church.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Capon Bridge Christian Church, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Jack Wardrope and the Rev. Herman Goede officiating. Burial will be in Loom Cemetery, Augusta, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Whitacre, Thomas Linger, Jesse Whitacre, Steven Saville, Michael Saville, and Gary Saville.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge.

Gretna S. Rooker
Gretna S. Rooker, 76, of West Cecil St., Winchester, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Jones Funeral Home are incomplete.

Geraldine L. Whittington
Geraldine Lavica Everhart Whittington, 80, of Stephenson, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in Culpeper.

Mrs. Whittington was born May 4, 1920, in Jones Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Douglas E. and Virgie Sears Everhart. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church, the Federation of the Blind, and Amy’s Kitchen Band.

She married Patrick Henry Whittington on June 24, 1967, in Frederick County. Mr. Whittington died Jan. 16, 2000.

Surviving are a daughter, Marlene Boarman of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a son, Kenneth Fraley Sr. of Winchester; two stepsons, Vernon R. Whittington of Stephenson and Kenneth D. Whittington of Winchester; two stepdaughters, Sylvia K. Whittington of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and Patricia H. Coulehan of Willis; two sisters, Alice Divine of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Marie Mason of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; a brother, Douglas E. Everhart of California; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Scott Boarman, Robbie Boarman, Kenneth Fraley Jr., Kristopher Fraley, Jeff Grew, and Ronald Venskoske.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Ernest W. Pettit
Ernest Wesley Pettit, 80, of Penrose Lane, Staunton, formerly of Harrisonburg and Winchester, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Pettit was born May 7, 1920, in Broadway, the son of Ernest Wilbur and Florence Cline Petit.

He worked for Rockingham Poultry Marketing Co-op from 1940 to 1985. He was a graduate of Broadway High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, the Lions clubs of Winchester and Burlington, N.C., and Broadway Ruritan Club.

He was married to Helen Wood for 58 years.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Patricia Pettit Seaton of Staunton and Sandra Pettit Childers of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Walter Miller Petit of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned today, with William Seaton and Dr. John Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg.

Friends may call at the home of his daughter, Patricia Seaton, 26 Penrose Lane, Staunton, from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice Program, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg 22801.

John S.L. Roszel Sr.
John Southgate Lemmon Roszel Sr., 87, of Baltimore, formerly of Darien, Conn., and Winchester, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Joseph Richey Hospice Inc., Baltimore.

Mr. Roszel was born in Ruxton, Md. He was a retired executive with United Nuclear Corp. in New York City. He had worked for Standard Oil Co. and Olin Corp.

He was a communicant, senior warden, and vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church, Baltimore.

He was a 1933 graduate of Shenandoah Valley Academy in Winchester.

He married Ann Falconer Brent in 1995. His first wife, Mary Davison Wight, died in 1993.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, John S.L. Roszel Jr. of Orinda, Calif., and Brantz M. Roszel of Ruskin, Fla.; a stepson, Giles W. Brent of Winchester; a stepdaughter, Ann M. Brent of Baltimore; a brother, David W. Roszel of Bolton Hill, Md.; a sister, Janet R. Tayloe of Middleburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Oct. 11 in Old Welbourne Cemetery, Middleburg.

Vivian J. Vawter
Vivian Johnson Vawter, 75, of Louisa, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Vawter was the daughter of W.T. and Gladys Knight Johnson.

She was married to Clifton T. Vawter for 56 years.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Janet V. Purcell; three sisters, Emily J. Leake, Mae J. Corker, and Martha Ann Bourne; three brothers, Ralph Johnson, Donald Johnson, and Wade Johnson of Berryville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was Tuesday in Louisa Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to Louisa Christian Church or to Louisa Rescue Squad.

Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, handled the arrangements.

Genetta V. Williams
Genetta V. Williams, 82, of 391 E. Pall Mall St., Winchester, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at her home.

Ms. Williams was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Rectortown, the daughter of Luther G. and Lucy Corbin Williams.

She was a retired waitress who worked at The Golden Kitchen Restaurant and Fritters Restaurant.

She was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie W. Myers and Carolyn J. Forrest, both of Winchester; two sisters, Mabel Lineburg of Virginia Beach and Geneva Ridley of Cardif by the Sea, Calif.; two brothers, Luther Williams Jr. of Nashua, N.H., and Woodrow Williams of Leesburg; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kirk Nave officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1232 22nd St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037-1292.

Ann M. Barr
Ann Mae Barr, 78, of 3014 C Pisgah Place, Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, in Greensboro.

Mrs. Barr was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Staunton, the daughter of Clyde and Clara Virginia Cason. She was a homemaker.

She married John Edmond Barr on July 2, 1938, in Winchester. Mr. Barr died Aug. 28, 1976.

Surviving are a son, John E. Barr of Frederick, Md.; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church Cemetery, Winchester.

Pallbearers will be her nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ruth S. Curry
Ruth Sigernia Curry, 88, of Summit Point, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Shenandoah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Charles Town, W.Va.

Mrs. Curry was born Feb. 28, 1912, in Mechanics Town, W.Va., the daughter of Henry and Annie Jones Stanton.

She was a housekeeper and cook. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Charles Alfred Curry.

Surviving are two sons, Charles A. Curry Jr. of Jamaica Queens, N.Y., and Howard “Pete” Curry of Winchester; three daughters, Dorothy R. Cook and Ruby McIntosh, both of Winchester, and Betty Jane Taylor of Charles Town; three brothers, Claude Stanton Sr. of Ranson, W.Va., William Stanton of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Charles Stanton of Bluefield, W.Va.; three sisters, Agnes McDonald of Charles Town, Mary Brooks of Middleburg, and Margaret Hillingsworth of Atlantic City, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A son, William “Fox” Curry is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Zion Baptist Church, Charles Town with Pastor Charles Cummings officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

Arrangements are being handled by Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson.

Marguerite G. Haldeman
Marguerite G. Haldeman, 98, of Papermill Road, Winchester, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Haldeman was born July 26, 1902, in Arvonia, the daughter of Edward Albin and Ada Toler Goodman.

She was a teacher at John Handley High School and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She married Paul M. Haldeman on June 29, 1929, in Buckingham County. Mr. Haldeman died May 5, 1981.

Surviving are a son, Paul M. Haldeman Jr. of Winchester.

A daughter, Elinor Haldeman, is deceased.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Carlyle A. McDonald officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home.

Helen I. Hoover
Helen Irene Frances Morris Hoover, 70, of 3189 Coffmantown Road, Woodstock, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Hoover was born March 14, 1930, in Strasburg, the daughter of Harry Amos and Lillian Smith Morris.

She had retired from Funk & Crabill Plumbing and Heating Co. in Strasburg. She was a member of Narrow Passage Assembly of God Church.

She was married to Dean Myers Hoover.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Karen Elaine Cook of Winchester and Sherry May Walling of Garden City, Ga.; a son, Randall Dean Hoover of Woodstock; two sisters, Lillian May Kline and Mildred Geniveve “Sissy” Hockman, both of Strasburg; three brothers, Amos Harold Morris and Charles Richard Morris, both of Strasburg, and James Elsworth Smith of Laurel, Md.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Valley Funeral Chapel, Bowmans Crossing, with Pastors Barbara Rhodes, Gerald Holden, and Dottie Holden officiating. Burial will be in Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock.

Pallbearers will be Richard Renniger, Richard Sollenberger, Chris Gardner, Cliff Wetzel, Joe Nicley, Greg McDonald, and Wade Feller.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Richard L. Rowland
Richard Luke Rowland, 68, of Ranson, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at the home of his sister-in-law, Grace F. Rowland, in Charles Town, W.Va.

Mr. Rowland was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Rippon, W.Va., the son of Ernest A. and Eva Virginia White Rowland. He was a self-employed carpenter in the construction industry.

He was an Army veteran who served with Company G in the 502nd Airborne Infantry Regiment.

He was a member of Kabletown United Methodist Church in Kabletown, W.Va.

Surviving are companion of 28 years, June Slusher Bohrer of Ranson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Melvin T. Strider Funeral Home, Charles Town, with Dr. Richard Simpson and Dr. Dan Saurino officiating. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
