James L. Dodgins
James Levi Dodgins, 79, of P.O. Box 832, Augusta, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Dodgins was born April 3, 1921, in Mountain Rest, S.C., the son of Adam Cornelius and Julia Ann Gillespie Dodgins. He was retired from the Army with the rank of sergeant first class.

He was a member of American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1101, both of Romney, W.Va., and Clinton Lodge 86, AM & FM.

He was married to Elizabeth Anna Trappmann.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Elizabeth Helen Anna Haskins of Fredericksburg; two sons, James Henry Fred Dodgins of Augusta and Charles Walter Dodgins of Wetherford, Texas; a brother, Fred “Dutch” Dodgins of 90-6, S.C.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, with Pastor Robert Jeffreys officiating. Burial will be in South Carolina.

There will be no visitation.

Margaret M. Hinkins
Margaret Mae Mitchell Hinkins, 80, of 223 Miller Drive, Strasburg, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Hinkins was born June 21, 1920, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Clarence Franklin and Ethel Louise Hawkins Mitchell.

She retired from Avtex Fibers Inc., Front Royal, after 45 years of service.

She was a member of Strasburg Christian Church and the Women’s Circle.

She was married to Frederick Franklin Hinkins.

Surviving are a sister, Kathleen M. Racey of Fishers Hill.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. J. Alexander officiating.

The family will receive friends anytime at the Hinkins home.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Marlin L. Watts
Marlin Lee Watts, 59, of Seneca Rocks, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Watts was born Aug. 9, 1941, in Cabins, W.Va., the son of Lee and Sally Ours Watts.

He was a carpenter and a member of Cabins Assembly of God Church.

He married Jo Ann Cooper on July 1, 1961.

Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Cabins, are a daughter, Rhonda Mauzy of Cabins; two sons, Marlin L. “Sonny” Watts Jr. of Riverton, W.Va., and Nick J. Watts of Cabins; three sisters, Wanda Barkley of Seneca Rocks, Twila Kessel of Maysville, W.Va., and Barbara Ritter of Winchester; three brothers, the Rev. Vivan Watts of New Creek, W.Va., Donald Watts of Cabins, and the Rev. Delton Watts of Springfield, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cabins Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Stephen B. Landis and the Rev. Joseph D. Eversole officiating. Burial will be in the Cooper family Cemetery, Seneca Rocks.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, W.Va.

Glenn S. Henry
Glenn S. Henry, 51, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Henry was born in Great Cacapon, W.Va., the son of Glenn R. Stuart Overly and Jane Henry Stotler. He was manager of Sheetz in Martinsburg, W.Va., and had worked for Berryville Graphics.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 1483 in Berkeley Springs.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa LeFever of Linn Grove, Ind., and Elise Martin of California; a son, Steve Henry of Geneva, Ind.; three sisters, Judy Compton and Stacy Hovermale, both of Berkeley Springs, and Sherry Bohrer of Strasburg; a brother, Terry Henry of New York; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Steve Dawson officiating.

Anna W. Pfeiffer
Anna Wright Pfeiffer, 88, of Winchester, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Berryville.

Mrs. Pfeiffer was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Bland County, the daughter of John Bowman and Lila J. Chandler Wright.

She had worked as a riveter on aircraft during World War II at the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard in Baltimore. She later worked as a seamstress at Lebow Brothers Tailor Shop in Baltimore.

She was married to Albert Roland Pfeiffer, who died in 1973. Her first husband was Milton Shoemaker.

Surviving are a daughter, M. Jane Mort of Winchester; four sisters, Minnie S. Williams and Ina K. Ramsey, both of Bland, and Edna K. Vaught and Ruby Lee Hale, both of Narrows; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A daughter, Ruby N. Shoemaker, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Bland, with family members officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, Bland County.

Sarah A. Smith
Sarah Anne Smith, 54, of 78 Cloverdale Heights, Charles Town, W.Va., formerly of Centreville, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 7, 1945, in Winchester, the daughter of William Edgar and Lucy Lloyd Trotter.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Christian faith.

She married Charles R. Smith on June 8, 1968, in Leesburg.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Jennifer Anne Neale of Centreville and Melanie Lynne Thain of Sharpsburg, Ga.; a son, Nathan Charles Smith of Radford; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Dennis Kinnan, Bobby Sylvia, and Mark Peters officiating. Burial will be in Fair View Cemetery, Bolivar, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ruth E. Russell
Ruth Elma Richard Russell, 93, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Russell was born Jan. 22, 1907, in Mountain Falls, the daughter of G. Harry and Daisy Belle Rinker Richard.

She retired in 1976 as a postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service in Hancock, Md., where she had worked since 1951. She had formerly worked in the business office of Woodward & Lothrop in Washington, D.C., had taught in the public schools of Frederick County, and had assisted her husband with his pastorates throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.

She was valedictorian of the 1926 graduating class at Middletown High School. She attended Southern Brothers Business College in Washington, D.C.

She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Stotlers Crossroads, W.Va.

She married the Rev. Clarence Gilbert Russell on Oct. 1, 1930. The Rev. Russell died Feb. 3, 1992.

Surviving are a son, Gilbert Richard Russell of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Eppinger and Mary Jane “Jay” Russell, both of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, twins Mary L. Richard and Martha L. Richard, both of Winchester, and Elizabeth Hope Conrad of Wayland, Mass; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew Cooney, Pastor James L. McMahan, and Sister Mary Margaret Weber officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James L. Smith
James Lee “Jimmy” Smith, 21, of Route 1, Box 110A, Baker, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 11, 1979, in Winchester, the son of Alton L. Smith and Jeannie Moses Lehew.

He was a mechanic with Smith’s Garage in Baker and worked for the Hardy County Board of Transportation.

He was a recent graduate of the Diesel Institute of America in Grantsville, Md. He graduated in 1999 from East Hardy High School, where he was active in the Future Farmers of America.

Surviving with his father, of Baker, and his mother, of Calloo, are a sister, Kimberly Eaton of New Market; a brother, Rodney Smith of Edinburg; his stepmother, Margaret Smith of Baker; his paternal grandmother, Arlene Smith of Baker; and his paternal great-grandmother, Edna Loman of Wardensville, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, Baker, with Pastor Fred Soltow officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Barb, Michael Burroughs, Melvin Shook, Billy Smith, Rick Smith, and Lenard Smith Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Gary N. Graham
Gary Nicholson Graham, 53, of 212 Maurertown Mill Road, Maurertown, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Graham was born Oct. 2, 1947, in White Plains, N.Y., the son of Homer Nicholson and Elsie Rebecca Smith Graham. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the Army 101st Airborne.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and attended Maurertown Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are a sister, Linda Graham of Maurertown; and two brothers, Roland Thomas Graham of Raleigh, N.C., and Glenn Delano Graham of Sarasota, Fla.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Maurertown Cemetery, with Pastor Richard Craver officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 202 N. Washington St., Winchester 22601.

Reeta I. Arthur
Reeta Ilene Arthur, 86, formerly of Winchester, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Woodstock.

Mrs. Arthur was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Braxton County, W.Va., the daughter of Lorenzo and Rosie Catherine Belknap Westfall.

She was retired from the dietary department of Winchester Memorial Hospital. She had been an electronic technician with the U.S. government.

She married Donald W. Arthur in 1948 in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are two sons, D. Arthur of Shenandoah County and R. Arthur of Strasburg; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be D. Arthur, R. Arthur, R.G. Arthur, A. Arthur, S. Arthur, and A. Arthur.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William E. White
William Elmer White, 76, of Timberville, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at his home.

Mr. White was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Winchester, Mass., the son of Oreville E. and Hazel Gilchrist White.

He was retired from the U.S. government. He also retired as a plumber and pipe fitter after working for Rittleberger Brothers, Blauch Brothers, Brunk Plumbing and Heating, and Sullivan Mechanical.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

He was married to Pauline Cutting.

Surviving with his wife are a son, William E. White II of Tacoma Park, Md.; a daughter, Margaret E. White of Winchester; and a sister, Thelma Meredith of Pace, Fla.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Market Seventh-Day Adventist Church, with Pastor Richard E. Harris and Pastor Van Sailo officiating.

Memorials may be made to Community Service Center, 62 West Lee Highway, New Market 22844; or to Hospice Unit of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg 22801.

Margaret Mitchell Hinkins, 80, of 223 Miller Drive, Strasburg, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home.

Hannah L. Long
Hannah Lee Long, 65, of 432 N. Kent St., Winchester, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Long was born May 25, 1935, in Red Spring, N.C., the daughter of Bishop Calvin L. McLaughlin and Pastor Daughter

Dora McAllister McLaughlin.

She was a member of St. Stephens C.M.E. Church, Winchester, where she sang in the choir.

She was married to Noah R. Long Jr.

Surviving are her companion, Joe Gilkerson of Winchester; four sons, Joseph Long of Newark, N.J., Daniel Long of Baumholder, Germany, John Phoenix Long of Winchester, and Paul Dennis Long of Aalborg, Denmark; three daughters, Linda Doreatha Long and Joyce Ann Long, both of Winchester, and Faye Juanita Long of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Jackson of Fayetteville; five brothers, Bishop John McLaughlin of Newark, James McLaughlin of Washington, D.C., and Bishop Jake McLaughlin, Joe McLaughlin, and Bobby McLaughlin, all of Fayetteville; and 23 grandchildren.

A son, Noah Randall Long III, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Stephens C.M.E. Church with the Rev. Bryan Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

Bryan W. Moyer
Bryan Walter Moyer, 34, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Oct. 5, 2000, at Lost River State Park.

He was born Sept. 15, 1966, in South Tahoe, Calif., the son of Sharon Kline Moyer of Marietta, Ohio, and the late Clifton Eugene Moyer.

He graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University. He was a member of the Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother, survivors include a grandmother, Garnet L. Kline of Wardensville, W.Va. A brother, Clifton E. Moyer II, is deceased.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Hedrick officiating. Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery in Wardensville, W.Va.

Samuel B. Riley
Samuel Booth Riley, 82, of Front Royal died Saturday Oct. 7, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va.

He was born July 17, 1918, in Allen, Okla., the son of Edward B. and Nellie Cole Riley. He married Sarah Crain April 9, 1942.

Mr. Riley was retired from the U.S. government as an ammunition inspector. He also worked in the Security Department of the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Gile B. Cook American Legion Post of Front Royal.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Elliott Bruce Riley of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert Edward Riley of Front Royal; a brother, Euclid Bruce Riley of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Mabel June Wilson of Bartlesville, Okla. and Rachel Langston of Dakota, Okla; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home with Richard Ridgeway officiating. Entombment will follow at the Panorama Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Riley, Bob Riley, Sammy Riley, Joseph Scott, Lloyd Derflinger, and John Woodall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the building fund of the Front Royal Church of Christ, 140 W. 15th St., Front Royal 22630.

Janice B. Combs
Janice Bucher Combs, 76, of 264 Bryarly Road, Winchester, died Saturday Oct. 7, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Frederick County, the daughter of Jacob Robertice and Georgia Ellen Reynolds Bucher.

She was a 1945 graduate of the Winchester Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received a post-graduate degree in 1946 from the University of Virginia Hospital. She retired after 41 years of nursing in the Washington, D. C. area and the Winchester Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, the Jolly Crowd of the Bethel Lutheran Church, and the Retired Nurses Association.

She married Paul J. Combs Jan. 17, 1948 in Winchester. He died March 20, 1968.

Mrs. Combs is the last member of her immediate family and is survived by a number of close friends and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rhodes Woolly, Rev. Conrad Christianson Jr., and Rev. David Burrough officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Roger McGaffick, James Morrison, Duane Cornwell, Thomas Davner, Lance Pierce, Steve Manual, and Joseph Cullison.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Omps Funeral Home Amherst Chapel.
