William E. Underwood
William E. Underwood, 75, of Kearneysville, W.Va., died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Underwood was born March 22, 1925, in Berryville, the son of Hunter and Lula Virginia Green Underwood.
He was an orchard worker and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Martinsburg Post 0014 and Jamestown Prosperity Church. He was a former member of the NAACP.
He was married to Constance Jackson for 42 years.
Surviving with his wife are a son, William Darrin Underwood Jr. of Ranson, W.Va.; five daughters, Sandra Ernestine Underwood and Constance Loretta Underwood, both of Kearneysville, Rosa Maria Underwood and Rita Ann Underwood, both of Winchester, and Barbara Doreen Branson of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three sisters, Myrtle Richardson and Gertrude Curry, both of Charles Town, W.Va., and Beatrice Foushee of Washington, D.C.; and a granddaughter.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, with the Rev. John E. Green Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Prosperity Cemetery, Summit Point, W.Va.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Helen V. Fowler
Helen Virginia Fowler, 75, of 820 W. Main St., Berryville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Fowler was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Loudoun County, the daughter of William L. and Rachael Virginia Alder Littleton. She was a homemaker.
She married John Oswell Fowler, who died Aug. 14, 1997.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda LaFehr of Fort Myers, Fla., and Virginia Fowler of Berryville; three sons, Allen Fowler and William “Chuck” Fowler, both of Berryville, and John “Randy” Fowler of Middleburg; and four grandchildren.

Lester Frank Seal, 90, of 417 Millwood Ave., Winchester, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mr. Seal was born Sept. 27, 1909, in Madison County, the son of Charles W. and Rhoda McDaniel Seal. He worked in boiler maintenance at Abex Corp. and retired Oct. 8, 1971, after 40 years.
He had worked at National Fruit Product Co. and American Viscose.
He was married to Emily Jane Carper, who died Dec. 8, 1986.
Surviving are two sons, Holmes F. “Buck” Seal of Frederick County and William A. Seal of Winchester; a daughter, Dorothy J. Kerns of Frederick County; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with David A. Owings officiating.

Lola B. Miller
Lola Beatrice Miller, 97, of Box 42, Mathias, W. Va., died Sept. 15, 2000, in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Miller was born June 29, 1903, in Mathias, the daughter of Charles and Eliza Baker Teets.
She was a member of the Kimsey Run Brethren Church in Mathias.
She married John Henry Miller Aug. 20, 1924, in Cumberland, Md.
Survivors include two sons, Leycester W. Miller of White Post and Deyerle H. Miller of Mathias; six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
A son, Ward L. Miller, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the Kimsey Run Brethren Church with the Rev. Glen Turner and the Rev. Steve Custard officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Daniel Robert Morena, 50, of 222 Inca Trail, Shawneeland, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Morena was born Nov. 13, 1949, in Baltimore, Md., the son of Pat Robert and Naomi Benton Morena. He was a courier for Piedmont Medical Laboratory. A veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U. S. Army.
He married Frances Perry April 28, 1995, in Winchester.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amber Morena of Austin, Texas; and three brothers, Robert F. John of Melbourne, Fla., Robert E. John of Glen Rock, Pa., and Arthur R. John of Lititz, Pa.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at Amherst Chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Pauline A. Walker
Pauline Agnes Walker, 85, of 1651 Chilly Hollow Road, Berryville, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center.
She was born April 18, 1915, in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes Giers Kutlib.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and a former member of St. Matthews Church. She was a member of the Peterson Park Mothers Club.
She was married to John C. Walker.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Knepp of Berryville; a son, John C. Walker Jr. of Annapolis, Md. ; three brothers, Marion Bocek of Berlin, Md. and Frank and Michael Bocek, both of Edgemere, Md. ; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Agnes Temple, is deceased.
A funeral is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville with the Rev. John Zigler officiating. Burial will at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery in Baltimore.

Dorothy B. Haines
Dorothy Bell Haines, 64, of 618 Shamrock Drive, Fredericksburg, formerly of Mt. Falls, Frederick County, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the home of her son in Beltsville, Md.
Mrs. Haines was born July 23, 1936, in Winchester, the daughter of Kenneth Lee Bell and Delilah Ortney Sager.
She retired in 1999 from the Association of Curriculum Development in Alexandria.
She was married to Edgar J Haines for 48 years.
Surviving with her husband are a son, Kenneth Bryan Haines of Beltsville; two sisters, Stella Strickler of Southborough, Mass., and Anna Mae Hubbell of Hagerstown, Md.; and a granddaughter.

Lucy H. O’Roark, 94, formerly of Shenandoah Avenue, Winchester, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, Md.
Mrs. O’Roark was born April 7, 1906, in Summerset, Pa., the daughter of John and Effie Murry Hoover.
She was a retired seamstress at Shodermans Mill in Winchester.
She was a member of Blue Ridge Grace Brethren Church.
She was married to James W. O’Roark. Her first husband was Earl Hildebrand.
Surviving are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Janet V. Kern, and a son, Donald Hildebrand, are deceased.

Mrs. Rohrbaugh was born March 16, 1931, in Needmore, W.Va., the daughter of William H. and Orlena Mae Wilson Combs.

She was married to Chester Lyle Rohrbaugh, who died Nov. 22, 1990.
Surviving are a son, Lysle E. Rohrbaugh of Maysville, W.Va.; two sisters, Pauline G. Pratt of Moorefield, W.Va., and Mabel I. George of Petersburg, W.Va.; three brothers, Harold W. Mrs. Liskey was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the daughter of Isaac Milton and Rose Anna Ring Milburn.
She was married to Grafton Liskey.
Surviving are four sons, Lyle K. Markle of New Port Richey, Fla., Floyd H. Markle of Kearneysville, Walter R. Markle of Winchester, and Frederick G. Markle of Fairplay, Md.; three daughters, Alice M. Setherley of Falling Waters, W.Va., Barbara L. Loy of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; and Dale A. Everhart of Kearneysville; a brother, Robert Milburn of Berryville; a sister, Edith Demory of Charles Town, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Kathleen M. Newton, 72, of North Loudoun Street, Winchester, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Newton was born June 7, 1928, in Winchester, the daughter of Luther B. and Josie Smedley Racer.
She was a receptionist with the Internal Revenue Service and a nurse’s aide in Baltimore.
She was the last member of her immediate family.

Clifford C. Brooks Jr., 68, of Clinton, Md., formerly of Winchester, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the home of his caregiver, Gloria Pillow.
Mr. Brooks was born March 14, 1932, in Winchester, the son of Clifford C. and Lillian Taper Brooks.
He worked for 40 years at the United States Capitol.
He was an Air Force veteran and received the Korean Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was married to Janet E. Lewis.
Surviving with his wife, of Temple Hills, Md., and his mother, of Winchester, are a daughter, Sandra M. Scott of Manassas; a son, Clifford C. Brooks III of Herndon; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be at noon Saturday in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester, with Pastor Gilbert M. Mack Jr. officiating.

Magdaline A. Candela, 74, of Winchester, formerly of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Candela was born Dec. 16, 1925, in St. Mary’s, Pa., the daughter of August and Madeline Hoffman Werneth.
She had worked for Roller Plastics.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, and the ladies auxiliaries of Moose Lodge 547 and VFW Post 943.
She was married to Steve Candela. Her first husband was William Amacher.
Surviving are three daughters, Martha Knotts of Winchester, Margaret Dodge of Geneva, Ohio, and Patricia Woodard of Holt, Fla.; a son, Leander Amacher of Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio; three sisters, Martha Pistner, Margaret Floravets, and Mary Werneth, all of St. Mary’s; two brothers, Clarence Werneth and August Werneth, both of St. Mary’s; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
An infant son is deceased.

She was married to Russell George Bowser.

She had worked at Long John Silver Seafood in Winchester.
She was engaged to marry Dale Funk.

James William Edge
James William Edge, 90, of 1702 Fairfax Pike, White Post, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Edge was born March 15, 1910, in Milleville, N.J., the son of Charles Lincoln and Margaret Harvey Boyd Edge.
He was a commercial artist for the Washington News and other advertising agencies.
He had been a tugboat captain on the Mississippi River.
He was married to Olga Hendrix, who died in 1998.
Surviving are three sisters, Beatrice Apperson of Stephens City, and Florence Anderson and Ella Dillon, both of Philadelphia.
