Rubye G. Bly
Rubye Grace Lowe Bly, 85, of York Avenue, Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bly was born May 31, 1916, in Carroll County, the daughter of John Lester and Mary L. Burcham Lowe.

She was a member of Relief United Methodist Church.

She married William H.T. Bly on Dec. 21, 1935, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Bly died Aug. 31, 1964.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Lou Tinsman of Berryville, Helen M. West of Winchester, and Peggy A. Wine of Marshall; three sisters, Lenore Bennington of Winchester, Jean Jordon of West Virginia, and Eva Bly of Stephens City; a brother, Courtney Lowe of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Robert C. Blinn officiating.

Memorials may be made to a favorite fire and rescue company.

Gladys L. Hill
Gladys “Hap” Louise Caldwell Hill of 320 Miller St., Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in The Willows at Meadow Branch, Winchester.

Mrs. Hill was born in Bessemer City, N.C., the daughter of William Galbraith Caldwell and Lucy Jane Hord Caldwell.

She had been a secretary for Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr. She was a real estate agent with Molden Real Estate Corp., J. V. Arthur Inc., and Daniel T. Grimes.

She was past president of the Auxiliary of the Virginia State Horticultural Society and a board member of the Women’s Civic League of Winchester. She was a member of Lord Fairfax Garden Club since 1988, where she was first vice president and second vice president. She was awarded life membership in the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs in 1994 by the Lord Fairfax Garden Club.

She was a member of Quota International of Winchester and served as president in 1979. She was a board member of the Blue Ridge Fine Arts League and a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She married Dr. Clarence H. Hill on March 11, 1944, in Camp Beale, Calif. Dr. Hill died Sept. 15, 1980.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. James H. Utt officiating. Burial will be private.

Pallbearers will be Dennis McLoughlin, Stewart Masters, Greyson Masters, G. Robbie Robinson, and Ken Carr.

Visitation will follow the service at the church and will include a luncheon.

Memorials may be made to Heritage for the Future Fund, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 26 W. Boscawen St., Winchester 22601; or to Blue Ridge Hospice Inc., 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Philip W. Perry
Philip Woodrow Perry, 82, of Potomac Park Camp, Falling Waters, W.Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Perry was born May 1, 1918, in Winchester, the son of John Harrison and Mable Virginia Alamong Perry. He was an electrician with Local 26 IBEW.

He was in the Army during World War II with the 99th Infantry in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He married Grace Price on Nov. 29, 1946. Mrs. Perry died in 1991.

Surviving are three sons, Henry H. Perry of Woodbridge, Philip “Wayne” Perry of Front Royal, and Larry Keith Perry of Middletown; two daughters, Amy Virginia Baker of Mechanicsville, Md., and Susan Katrina Anderson of Winchester; five sisters, Mary Russell of Stephenson, Lucille Lake of Lady Lake, Fla., and Bessie Williams, Eva Perry, and Louise Zuckerman, all of Winchester; a brother, John “Ed” Perry of New Castle, Del.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Omps Funeral Home. Burial will be in Reliance Cemetery, Reliance.

Pallbearers will be Philip William Perry, Steve Perry, Ben Perry, Mike Perry, Earl Baker, and Justin Baker.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gladys P. Thompson
Gladys Peters Thompson, 77, of Leesburg, formerly of Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 28, 1923, in Ferrum, the daughter of Samuel Luther and Mary Kelley Peters.

She retired from Mount Weather after 31 years and had worked as clerk and operator for the C&P Telephone Co. in Leesburg.

Surviving are two sons, Coy Kelley Thompson of Frederick County and James Alton Thompson of Leesburg; a brother, Frank Peters of Floyd; three sisters, Tempest Reed of Christiansburg, June Virts of Lovettsville, and Lucy Smith of Frederick County; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Lovettsville Union Cemetery, Lovettsville, with the Rev. Osborn Hough officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Ladies Board of the Loudoun Hospital Center.

Ruth G. Swartz
Ruth Genevieve “Genny” Swartz, 69, of 228 Weems Lane, Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her home.

Miss Swartz was born April 16, 1931, in Winchester, the daughter of Walter Scott and Ida Mae Grubbs Swartz.

She was retired from Zeropack.

Surviving are her companion, Richard H. Owens of Winchester; a son, Scott Armel of Winchester; two sisters, Dorothy Marie Embrey of Winchester and Mildred Richards of Maryland; and four brothers, Charles Swartz and Edward Swartz, both of Winchester, Ernest Swartz of Centreville, and Aubrey Swartz of Virginia.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Paynes Chapel Cemetery, Ridgeway, W.Va., with Dr. Kenneth H. Smith officiating.

Pallbearers will be Douglas Greene, Scott Armel, Ronnie Swartz, Ralph Swartz, Keith Scruggs, Chris Tomblin, and Douglas G. Greene Sr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home.

Mabel E. Carper
Mabel E. Carper, 89, of Winchester Manor, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Carper was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Jefferson County, W.Va., the daughter of Fred and Lula McCarty Whitacre. She worked at the Winchester Woolen Mill.

She was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church.

She was married to Paul L. Carper, who died in 1949.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Alan R. Felumlee officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home.

Mary F. Copeland
Mary Francis Copeland, 91, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Copeland was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Thorn Bottom, W.Va., the daughter of George and Leona Dietz Fishel. She was a midwife.

She was a member of Marvin Chapel Church near Wardensville.

She married Austin Bradley Copeland on March 17, 1926, in Winchester. Mr. Copeland died Aug. 14, 1964.

Surviving are a son, Harry Copeland of Wardensville; two daughters, Dorothy Funkhouser and Nancy Sager, both of Wardensville; a brother, Harper Fishel of Wardensville; two sisters, Edna Fishel and Pearl Fishel, both of Wardensville; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wardensville United Methodist Church, with Pastor David Garns and the Rev. Luther “Nip” Crites officiating. Burial will be in Wardensville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wesley Strosnyder, Bill Tharp, Greg Sager, Jimmy Dyer, Paul Hinkle, and Joe Fishel.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Ronald Glenn James Sr., 49, of Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at his home.

Jennifer L. May, 37, of Winchester, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Bernice E. Rogers
Bernice Elizabeth Rogers, 96, of White Post, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at her home.

Arrangements with Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, are incomplete.

Lillian J. Ruckman
Lillian Johnson Ruckman, 92, of Romney, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Kroontje Care Center, Blacksburg.

Mrs. Ruckman was born Jan. 25, 1908, the daughter of Luther and Delia Fletcher Johnson. She was a teacher for 43 years and retired in 1973 as a first grade teacher at Romney Elementary School.

She was a member of the Hampshire County Retired Teachers’ Association, the First Baptist Church of Romney, and the American Baptist Women’s Ministries.

She was married to Aven C. Ruckman, who died in 1969.

Surviving are a daughter, Cora Alice Hatcher of Christiansburg; a sister, Edith Seldon of Winchester; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, with the Rev. Frank Meadows officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Hampshire County Heart Association.

Thyra M. Whetzel
Thyra Mae Whetzel, 59, of Wilson Boulevard, Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in a local nursing homes.

Mrs. Whetzel was born Oct. 8, 1940, in Clarke County, the daughter of Wilton B. and Gladys B. Huff. She worked at Benji’s in Berryville for 15 years.

She married Junior Whetzel on July 30, 1969, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband, of Clearbrook, are four daughters, Sharon Staub and Linda Lewis, both of Winchester, Donna McCoy of Clearbrook, and Tracey Nolan of Frederick County; five sons, Gary Stottlemyer of Clearbrook, Mike Stottlemyer and William Whetzel, both of Winchester, Junior Whetzel Jr. of Shanks, W.Va., and Gary Whetzel of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; a sister, Virginia Grimm of Winchester; 36 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with Pastor Glen McLaughlin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Bonnie M. McCarty
Bonnie Marie McCarty, 51, of 230 Iron Rail Lane, Boyce, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. McCarty was born June 10, 1949, in Winchester, the daughter of Montford Lee and Elizabeth Russell Mallory. She was a claims representative with the Social Security Administration.

She was a member of Berryville Baptist Church.

She married James Wilson McCarty on Jan. 26, 1969, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband and her mother, of Berryville, are two sons, James Wilson McCarty Jr. of Winchester and Christopher Patrick McCarty, both of Winchester; a sister, Gail Johnson of Winchester; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Melvin R. Minick
Melvin Richard Minick, 81, of Reliance, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Minick was born May 5, 1919, in New Market, the son of John William and Florence Rebecca Hamburg Minick.

He was retired from American Viscose after 25 years.

He was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving as an airplane mechanic and crew chief on B-17 bombers with the 8th Air Force, 303rd Bomber Group, Hell’s Angels Division.

He was active in the establishment of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Reliance United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher.

He married Alta Mae Snyder on Jan. 9, 1946. Mrs. Minick died Dec. 3, 1997.

Surviving are three daughters, Jean Marie Allison of Brunswick, Ga., Mary Teresa Sloat and Janet Lynn German, both of Front Royal; a brother, James Minick of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Grace M. Tomento of Ohio and Jean Kreiner of Bel Air, Md.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reliance United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Wade officiating. Burial will be in Reliance Cemetery, with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Fred Raffel, Richard Clem, Eric Allison, David Sloat Jr., John Sloat, Brad Sloat, and Christopher German.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Spiros G. Trahanis
Spiros George Trahanis, 94, of 1024 Orchard Ave., Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Trahanis was born April 21, 1906, in Corinth, Greece, the son of George and Ethel Trahanis. He had owned a restaurant, “The Rose Room,” in Pittsburgh.

He was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church and American Legion Post 21.

He married Flora Belle Helvey on Sept. 8, 1953, in Chicago.

Surviving with his wife are a son, George Spiros Trahanis of New York, N.Y.; and two sisters, Virginia Nicholas and Esther Rafolakis, both of Pittsburgh.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Winchester, with Father Michael Yachnis officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be George Poulas, Carl Freedman, George Soiles, Fred Soiles, George Sempeles, George M. Sempeles, and Dr. George Yeatras.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home.

Jennifer L. May, 37, of 5 Morningside Drive, Winchester, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. May was born Jan. 1, 1963, in Stamford, Conn., the daughter of Jessie and Lottie Williams James. She was a member of Miracle Faith World Outreach Church in Monroe, Conn.

She attended Light House Baptist Church in Winchester.

She married Thurman May in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband and her mother, of Winchester, are three sons, Keonta M. James, Zarious R. James, and DaQuin T. May, all of Winchester; a daughter, LaKeya J. James of Winchester; and a stepdaughter, Sham Hardy of Stamford.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Winchester, with Pastor Gilbert M. Mack Jr. and Minister Virgil E. Watson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Cartwright Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to The Building Fund of Light House Baptist Church, c/o Minister Virgil E. Watson, 1041 Martin St., Stephens City 22655.
