The Rev. Edgar J. “Ed” Harrison, 83, formerly of Winchester, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000.
The Rev. Harrison was born Aug. 27, 1916, the son of Edgar and Olive Harrison.
His first wife was Helen Harrison. His second wife was Hazel Harrison.
Surviving are four children, Joan DiGiulian of Jacksonville, Fla., Stephen Harrison of Davis, Calif., Barbara Gloster of Springfield, and Wesley Harrison of Fredericksburg; a brother, Olive McReady of Waldorf, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, Md. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Md.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Donald W. Spitler
Donald Wayne Spitler, 37, of Reliance Road, Middletown, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Spitler was born Aug. 13, 1968, in Winchester, the son of Raymond Henry and Marie Spitler.
He was a carpenter for builder William Cooley.
He attended the Church of Christ in Strasburg. He was a member of the NRA.
Surviving with his father, of Middletown, and his mother, of White Post, are a son, Joshua Spitler of Middletown; a daughter, Kristie Spitler of Middletown; three sisters, Bonnie Barner and Tammy Henry, both of Winchester, and Cathy Henry of Middletown; and two brothers, Douglas Henry of Front Royal and Raymond Henry of Middletown.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, Stephens City, with John L. Bost, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Middletown.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Estes, Jacob Estes, Patrick Henson, Ronald Olechnicki, Dwight Smith, Benny Spiker, and Roy Spitler.

Mark E. Wilson Sr.
Mark Edward Wilson Sr., 42, of 775 Cedar Creek Road, Strasburg, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Wilson was born Jan. 19, 1958, in Washington, D.C., the son of Woodrow Donald Wilson and Marjorie Woods Wilson.
He was a brick mason.
He was married to Rose Marie Lovell.
Surviving with his wife, of Manassas, and his father, of Strasburg, are three sons, Mark “Bim” Wilson Jr., Brad K. Wilson, and Matthew “Dane” Wilson, all of Manassas; a sister, Linda Wilson-Irwin of Strasburg; and a grandchild.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. William Day Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Fishers Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brad Wilson, Matthew Wilson, Jonathan Wilson, and Roy Boyd.

Rodney L. Pratt
Rodney Lee Pratt, 39, of 140 Marathon Place, Romney, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Pratt was born July 1, 1961, in Norfolk, the son of Donald L. and Freda J. Constable Pratt.
He was a security officer at Cumberland Federal Prison, Cumberland, Md.
He was an Army veteran and served in Vietnam.
He was married to Lisa M. Knotts.
Surviving with his wife and his parents, of Augusta, W.Va., are two daughters, Joni Pratt and Shannon Pratt, both at home; a son, Jeffrey Pratt at home; and a sister, Brenda Newbraugh of Grafton, W.Va.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, with Pastor Joe Metzler officiating. Burial will be in Woodsdale Memorial Park, Grafton.

Vivian V. Chandler
Vivian Virginia Vine Chandler, 79, of Front Royal, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.
Mrs. Chandler was born April 18, 1921, in Crandon, Wis., the daughter of Mae G. Haney and Arthur Vine.
She was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration.
She was married to George Vestal Chandler, who died in 1983.
Surviving are two sons, William G. Chandler of Silver Spring, Md., and Thomas H. Chandler of Front Royal; a sister, Florence Nunley of San Jose, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Clear Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Erwin, Tenn., with the Rev. Bill Ponder officiating.

Stephen G. Theron
Stephen Gurney Theron, 76, of 13 Lincoln Ave., Berryville, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Mr. Theron was born June 27, 1924, in London, Ontario, Canada, the son of Johanas and Emma Danforth Theron.
He was a construction worker.
He was in the Navy and the Army in Europe during World War II.
He was a member of VFW Post 9760 of Berryville and Local 132 of the Carpenters Union.
He married Jessie Shifflett on Jan. 28, 1956, in Gaithersburg, Md.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Terri Kennell of Berryville; and a son, Stephen Todd Theron of Berryville.
A funeral will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be private.

Louis G. Sasser Jr., 70, of Front Royal Pike, Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Sasser was born May 15, 1930, in Columbus County, N.C., the son of Louis Gordon and Shreddy Ann Simmons Sasser.
He was retired as a motor grader operator with L.F. Franklin & Sons.
He was a member and former deacon of Greenway Southern Baptist Church.
He married Annie Grace Fussell on Jan. 5, 1951, in Wilmington, N.C.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Kaye Lineweaver of Stephens City; four sons, Dr. Louis Gordon Sasser III of Alma, Ark., Gary Stephen Sasser of Stephens City, Charles Gregory Sasser of Clearbrook, and Jeffrey Stewart Sasser of Winchester; a sister, Lillie Carlisle of Wilson, N.C.; a brother, Jack Sasser of Long Beach, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Thomas Capron officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park

Ena Welsh Huffman, 82, of Brunswick, Ga., formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Fairhaven Assisted Living Center.
Mrs. Huffman was a native of Winchester. She was a laboratory technician and a graduate of Gradwohl Institute.
Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Sullivan of Brunswick; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Olive Elizabeth Clark Wade, 71, of 10565 Glen Hannah Drive, Laurel, Md., died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Wade was born Dec. 8, 1928, in Detroit, the daughter of Homer Augustus and Oneta Illingworth Clark. She attended Olivet College in Olivet, Mich., and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Traverse City, Mich., where she was a member of the Rebekah Circle.
She married Robert F. Wade on June 4, 1949, in Detroit.
The Wades were in the process of relocating to a new home in Winchester.
Surviving, along with her husband, are four sons, David C. Wade of Newport News, Paul W. Wade of Paris, Ky., Thomas R. Wade of Midlothian, and John L. Wade of Laurel; a sister, Mary Fran Underwood of Sun City Center, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be Sept. 3 at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dean Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse, Mich.

Raymond M. Dodson
Raymond M. Dodson, 72, of Stephens City, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Dodson was born May 18, 1928, in Loudoun County, the son of Benjamin F. and Dolly Nicholson Dodson. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator with E.R. Neff Construction Co.
He was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II. He was a member of the Freedom Club of Browntown and an 18-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He married Gloria J. Lindamood in 1986 in Winchester.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Jason Wisecarver of Winchester; a brother, Benjamin E. Dodson Sr. of Winchester; and a sister, Virgie M. Anderson of Winchester.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Freedom Club, Browntown. Arrangements are by Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors.
Linda L. Watts
Linda Lou Watts, 46, of Augusta, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Watts was born Aug. 22, 1953, in Petersburg, W.Va., the daughter of Minor Maxwell Watts Sr. and Dora Catherine Rebecca Smith Watts. She was a homemaker.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a brother, Minor Maxwell Watts Jr. of Augusta; two nephews; and a niece.

Rosie V. McKee
Rosie V. McKee, 73, of Moorefield, W.Va., formerly of Winchester, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Leesburg.
Mrs. McKee was born Jan. 2, 1927, in Madison County, the daughter of Oliver F. and Eller Mae Sisk Anderson.
She married Roy L. McKee on Sept. 18, 1944, in Winchester. Mr. McKee died Feb. 5, 1985.
Surviving are a son, Lemuel A. McKee of Winchester; a daughter, Margie M. Miller of Moorefield; a sister, Nellie Ann Berry Ruckersville; two brothers, John B. Anderson of Luray and Frank Anderson of Brightwood; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Roger L. McKee.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Hebron Cemetery.

H. Ray Nail
Holmes Ray Nail, 72, of 117 Miller Road, Winchester, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at a local nursing home.
Mr. Nail was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Hayfield, Va., the son of Ethel Nail Brown. He was a truck driver with Wilson Trucking and a contracted mail carrier.
He attended Second Opequon Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Nail married Elizabeth Gochenour on Jan. 10, 1949, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Gary L. Nail and Kim Nail, both of Gainesboro, Dennis C. Nail Sr. of Louisiana, Mo., and Galen E. Nail of Mt. Falls; a daughter, Karen Foreman of Front Royal; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Second Opequon Presbyterian Church, Cedar Creek Grade, with the Revs. John D. Sterrett III and George E. Nichels. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Hayfield.

George K. Gates
George Kelly Gates, 59, of Lakeridge Drive, Stephens City, formerly of Niagra Falls, N.Y., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Gates was born May 29, 1931, in Smyth County, the son of Arthur and Pansy Sparks Gates. He served as a sergeant during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Eagles No. 824.
Surviving are seven daughters, Linda Lowe of Portland, Ore., Premadonna Judware of Lockport, N.Y., and Rose Blankenship, Susan Bowen, Darlene Toarmino, Juanita Sirianni, and Kim Langman, all of Niagra Falls; five sons, Arthur Gates, Robert Gates, Lee Gates, Joey Langman, and Jimmy Langman, all of Niagra Falls; two sisters, Lila Emmons and Wanda Gilmer, both of Winchester; a brother, Jim Gates of Georgia; 26 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m.

Olin R. Oates Jr.
Olin Richard “Dick” Oates Jr., 70, of HC 59, Box 446, Petersburg, W.Va., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Oates was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Petersburg, the son of Olin Richard and Pearl Riley Oates.
He retired from the Air Force after 20 years with the rank of master sergeant. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He was a member of New Life Revival Center, Petersburg.
He married Betty L. Kimble on Sept. 12, 1983, in Albuquerque, N.M.
His first wife, Violet Shoemaker, died April 15, 1983.
Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Hampshire Home Care Center, Romney, W.Va., are a daughter, Cheryl D. Hand of Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Dana R. Oates of Melbourne, Fla., and Doug E. Oates of Falls Church; four sisters, Phyliss Dale Smith of Petersburg, Norma B. Lee of Waynesboro, Carolyn F. Riggleman of Stephens City, and Elizabeth Sue Smith of Norfolk; two brothers, Gerald J. Oates of Keyser, W.Va., and Joseph K. Oates of Columbus, Ohio; a half brother, Arthur Oates of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Charles E. Kern Sr.
Charles Edward Kern Sr., 88, of Mt. Lake Park, Md., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Kern was born Oct. 23, 1911, in Gore, the son of Alva Homer and Florence Maucher Kern.
He retired in 1996 from Allegheny Wood Products Co. in Petersburg, W.Va. He had worked at Wood Products Co. in Oakland, Md., as a machinist, and previously worked at F.C. Cook & Co. in Buckhannon, W.Va., and J. Natwick & Co. in Moorefield, W.Va.
During World War II, he worked at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Md.
He was a third degree Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge 29 AF&AM in Moorefield.
He married Sarah Fout on June 14, 1934, in Petersburg, W.Va.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Charles Edward Kern Jr. of Oakland, Md.; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Whitacre of Winchester and Deborah Jean Johnson of Mt. Lake Park; two sisters, Virginia Kern Fanning of Winchester and Ann May Kern Woods of Ft. Meade, Fla.; a stepbrother, Robert Kern of Winchester; two grandchildren; and twin great-grandsons.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. William R. Withers and Roy Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Gainesboro Cemetery, Gainesboro.
