Thelma McCarty
Thelma “Billie” McCarty, 82, of Inwood, W.Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. McCarty was born April 2, 1918, in Morgantown, W.Va., the daughter of Hugh W. and Era Brake Prettyman.

She was an assistant clerk at Inwood Post Office.

She was a member of Inwood United Methodist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday school class. She was a member of Inwood Senior Citizens and the Senior Citizens of St. Leo Catholic Church.

She was married to David T. McCarty.

Surviving are a son, Charles McCarty of Weyers Cave; a daughter, Sandra M. May of Inwood; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood, with the Rev. Sheril D. Merki officiating. Burial will be in Gerrardstown Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the chapel.

George B. Masters
George B. Masters, 91, formerly of 307 Miller St., Winchester, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury.

Mr. Masters was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Newport News, the son of George Henry and Lena Wright Masters.

He was district manager for Life of Virginia Insurance Co., where he had worked for 45 years.

He was in the Naval Reserve.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of Winchester Kiwanis Club.

He married Evelyn Russell on June 1, 1935, in Reisterstown, Md. Mrs. Masters died Jan. 12, 1999.

Surviving are a son, Stewart R. Masters of Winchester; a daughter, Annette Masters Scheel of Waterford; a brother, Dr. Joseph H. Masters of Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Carlyle A. McDonald, the Rev. Warren E. Boling, and the Rev. Samuel P. Jones Jr. officiating.

Pallbearers will be H. Denis Hoover, Taylor Simpson, Aubrey Taylor, Jonas Chamberlin, Frank Macomber, and Jack Fretwell.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Jones Funeral Home.

Susan E. Schlack
Susan Elizabeth “Sue” Schlack, 97, of Winchester, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Frederick County.

Miss Schlack was born Aug. 17, 1902, in Clarke County, the daughter of Charles Henry and Anna Catherine Hauptman Schlack.

She had been a private secretary for Dr. George G. Snarr.

She had attended Fort Loudoun School, Irving College, and Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now James Madison University.

She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1919 and was the oldest member of the church.

She was a charter member and past president of Winchester Quota Club International.

She was a charter member of the Dick Bowers Bridge Club.

Surviving are five nieces, Nancy Yost of Winchester, Helen Stewart and Mary Lou Koontz, both of Frederick County, Charlotte Schneider of Cincinnati, and Betty Blodget of Sequim, Wash.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. Burial will be private in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Loudoun St., Winchester 22601.

Paul L. Shanholtz
Paul Lennard Shanholtz, 80, of Springfield, W.Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in the Hampshire Center, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Shanholtz was born July 26, 1920, in Springfield, the son of Wilbur and Edna Wagner Shanholtz.

He was a retired millwright with Kelly Springfield Tire Co.

He was a member of Forest Glen United Methodist Church and the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

He was married to Alice Lambert for 58 years.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Paul David Shanholtz of Greenspring, W.Va., Daniel Lennard Shanholtz of Berlin, Md., and Donnie Ray Shanholtz of Moorefield, W.Va.; two daughters, Delores Jean Delawder of Springfield and Doris Marie Mowrey of Delray, W.Va.; two brothers, William Glen Shanholtz of Oldtown, Md., and Eugene Tillman Shanholtz of Greenspring; four sisters, Hazel Irene Duerr, Mary Isabella Fields, and Evelyn Florence Wise, all of Greenspring, and Martha Jane Parker Merritt of Short Gap, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; a foster grandson; 17 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baldwin Funeral Home, Romney, with Pastor Norman Landis and the Rev. Debbie Shreve officiating. Burial will be in Forest Glen Cemetery, Greenspring.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Karl Gersdorff
Karl Gersdorff, 73, of Little River, S.C., formerly of Stephens City, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000.

Mr. Gersdorff was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Wilbar and Elsie Heidenreich Gersdorff.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are a son, David Gersdorff of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Diane G. Conrad of Little River and Karen G. Willis of Winchester; and a grandchild.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Washington National Cemetery, Suitland, Md.

Lee Funeral Home, Little River, is handling arrangements.

Myrtle M. Fogleman
Myrtle Meade Fogleman, 82, of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Winchester, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in National Health Care, Bristol.

Mrs. Fogleman was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Russell County, the daughter of Wiley and Rudy Skeen Meade.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Gore.

She married William Keely “Bill” Fogleman on July 2, 1937, in Bristol. Mr. Fogleman died April 21, 1972.

Surviving are two brothers, Brady M.J. Meade of Gore and Jesse H. Meade of High View, W.Va.; and four sisters, Iva Marple, Loretta Wine Shuster, and Stella Mae Knotts, all of Winchester, and Mildred O. Jenkins of Strasburg.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rob Lovett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cookie Marple, Tommy Marple, Joe Marple, Robert Meade, Wendell Meade, and Mickie Heflin.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mary A. Jeffries
Mary Ann Jeffries, 70, of Timber Pines, Spring Hill, Fla., formerly of Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Jeffries was born in Indianapolis. She was a programmer for the National Broadcasting Co.

She was a member of the Catholic faith.

She was married to Patrick Jeffries.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Kathleen Hugus of Leesburg; a son, Patrick M. Jeffries of Barnesville, Md.; three brothers, Bill Ritt, John Ritt, and Bob Ritt, all of the Cleveland area; and a grandchild.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Chapel, with Father Andrew Beaudoin officiating.

Brewer Memorial Funeral Homes and Crematory, Spring Hill, is handling arrangements.

Robert E. Cox Sr.
Robert Edward Cox Sr., 64, of Romney, W.Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Winchester.

Mr. Cox was born Sept. 3, 1935, in Springfield, W.Va., the son of Willard and Darie Moyers Cox.

He had owned and operated Cox Salvage Yard in Romney since 1974.

He was a member of Community Bible Assembly of God Church in Romney.

He was married to Mary Ellen O’Brien.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Robert E. Cox Jr., Larry Lee Cox, and Dennis J. Cox, all of Romney; two daughters, Rose M. Slonaker of Romney and Brenda K. Long of Winchester; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating. Burial will be in the Cox family Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Brandi N. Hess
Brandi Nicole Hess, 20, of Coffmantown Road, Woodstock, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Miss Hess was born June 24, 1980, in Uniontown, Pa., the daughter of Allen F. and Rella House Hess.

Surviving with her father of Adah, Pa., are her mother, Rella Boaz of Star Tannery; a stepsister, Breanna Boaz of Middletown; a brother, Michael Hess of Star Tannery; a half brother, Cody Hess of Adah; a stepbrother, William Boaz Jr. of Winchester; her paternal grandparents, Clyde and Dorothy Hess of Thompson No. 1, Pa.; and her maternal grandparents, Audrey Barton of Woodstock and Samuel House Jr. of Republic, Pa.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in LaFayette Memorial Park Chapel, Brier Hill, Pa., with Pastor John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in LaFayette Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be James Hess Sr., James Hess Jr., Clyde Hess Jr., Clyde Hess III, Anthony Hess, and Darryl Frost.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Robert T. Kish Funeral Home, Republic, Pa.

Gary S. Elliott
Gary S. Elliott, 51, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000.

Mr. Elliott was born in Winchester, the son of Curtice F. and Betty A. Elliott.

He owned Ganesh Communications Inc. in Vero Beach and was a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

He had been a security agent in the Army.

Surviving with his mother of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., is a brother, Ronald L. Elliott of Stephens City.

A funeral will be at 6 p.m. today at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home, Fort Pierce, Fla., with Ann Decker officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Staunton.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

John H. Lee
John Hee Lee, 54, of Front Royal, formerly of Fairfax, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Lee was born Nov. 10, 1945, in Japan, the son of Jin Koo Lee and Myung Soon Yoo Lee.

He operated Lee’s Custom Tailors in Apple Blossom Mall and in Front Royal.

He married Jong Soon in 1971.

He and his wife came to the United States in 1976 and settled in Fairfax, where he operated a tailoring shop until 1995.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Jill Lee and Susan Lee, both of Front Royal; six brothers, Gung Hee, Myung Hee, Jung Sung, Jung Choon, Whan Hee, and Joon Hee; and a sister, Choo Gang.

A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Borimsa Buddhist Temple, Fairfax.

Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, is handling arrangements.

Mary J. Watts
Mary Jane Fell Watts, formerly of Marlboro, Frederick County, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Rome, N.Y.

Mrs. Watts was born July 7, 1928, in Elmayra, N.Y., the daughter of Edith and William Fell.

She was married to Fred Alonzo Watts.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Timothy Watts, Jimmy Watts, and Jerry Watts, all of New York.

Patricia A. Burke
Patricia Ann Burke, 53, of 103 Elkmont Drive, Elkton, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Burke was born May 28, 1947, in Front Royal, the daughter of William Nathan and Mary Ann Simmons Whitlock.

She was retired from E.I. DuPont Co.

She was a member of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are a son, Eugene Edwin Burke II of Warrenton; and two brothers, William Ronald Whitlock and Richard Lee Whitlock, both of Front Royal.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. John Burke officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Sublett, Todd Sublett, Jay Snow, James Meadows, Clyde Burkhart, and Norman Shiflett.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen F. Faris
Helen Frances Faris, 79, of Martinsburg, W.Va., formerly of Front Royal, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Faris was born April 9, 1921, in Covington, the daughter of Edwin and Mattie Wright Kincaid.

She was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church and a former member of the Ladies of the Moose, both of Front Royal.

She was married to George E. Faris, who died May 3, 1976.

Surviving are two sons, George E. Faris of Laconia, N.H., and Vernon W. Faris of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Donna M. Ruiz of Martinsburg; two half brothers, Earl Kincaid of Chicago and Larry Kincaid of Roanoke; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary E. Grant
Mary Ellen Cullen Grant, 63, of 667 Lofton Road, Raphine, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, in University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

Mrs. Grant was born May 25, 1937, in Greenville, the daughter of Phillip Cullen and Madeline Fitzgerald Cullen Byram.

She retired as a supervisor with Fiberspun Inc. after 32 years.

She was a member of Pines Chapel, Augusta County.

She was married to Paul A. Grant for 47 years.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, James Grant of Grottoes and Paul Curtis Grant of Raphine; two daughters, Rebecca Faye Kelly of Winchester and Kimberly Michelle Caricofe of Raphine; a brother, Richard Byram of Smithfield; three sisters, Linda Rowe of Raphine, Kaye Donovan of Hampton, and Jean Scarborough of Smithfield; her stepfather, Logan Byram of Raphine; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Pines Chapel, Augusta County, with the Rev. Robert D. Goshorn and the Rev. Clifford D. Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Kelley Sr., Dwayne Caricofe, Algie Phillips, Ronnie Cook, Jason Kelly, Carl Shover, Alan Lambert, and Robbie Rowe.

Cathy L. Farney
Cathy Lewis Farney, 47, of Thomasville, Ga., formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Farney was born June 17, 1953, in Winchester, the daughter of James and Dorothy Borrer. She had been a secretary.

She was a 1971 graduate of Handley High School and a member of New Covenant Church in Thomasville.

She married Scott Farney on Dec. 23, 1983, in Thomasville.

Surviving with her husband and her father, of Winchester, are a daughter, Denise Farney of Thomasville; three sisters, Sharon Butler of Winchester, Teresa Ainsworth of Stephens City, and Lisa Beason of Valley Center, Calif.; and her grandmother, Anna Hopkins of Bunker Hill, W.Va.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday in New Covenant Church, with Pastor Steve Bradshaw officiating.

Virgil M. Armel Sr.
Virgil Martin “Dickie” Armel Sr., 71, of Winchester, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Armel was born Aug. 24, 1928, in Clarke County, the son of Ernest E. and Martha Bailey Armel. He retired in 1991 from Abex Corp.

Surviving are a son, Virgil M. Armel Jr. of Stephens City; three daughters, Betty Levi, Joyce Ritter, and Joan Snyder, all of Winchester; three sisters, Charlotte Miller of Front Royal, Ellen Welch of Berryville, and Audrey Jenkins of New Market.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, with Chaplain Donald Miller officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Henry G. Cole
Henry Garland Cole, 64, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mr. Cole was born May 5, 1936, in Page, W.Va., the son of Harrison Clyde and Sevella Hiser Cole.

He worked for W.J. Johnson Electrical Co.

He was an Air Force veteran.

He was married to Betty Nottingham.

Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Martinsburg, are two sons, Henry G. Cole Jr. at home and Jeffery Cole of Ohio; a daughter, Teresa Tackett of Ohio; a brother, H. Grant Cole of Winchester; a sister, Patricia Cole Smith of Hagerstown, Md.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned.
