Elizabeth F. Giffin
Elizabeth F. Giffin, 86, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Winchester, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, in Community Hospital, New Port Richey.

Mrs. Giffin was born Aug. 18, 1913, in Winchester, the daughter of Samuel and Octavia LaFollette.

She had worked at National Fruit Product Co.

She was a member of St. Marks Presbyterian Church, Hudson, Fla.

Surviving are a sister, Virginia Jackson of Edinburg; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Albert L. Mann
Albert Leroy “Sonny” Mann, 57, of Chantilly, formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Hospice of Northern Virginia, Arlington.

Mr. Mann was born April 26, 1943, in Berkeley Springs, the son of Albert William and Geneva Belle Kelley Mann.

He was a supervisor with Newington Concrete Co. and had been in the Army with the Military Police.

He was a Mormon and had attended Berkeley Springs High School. He collected Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and country western memorabilia.

He was married to Betty Rose Knowles for 40 years.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Christopher Leroy Mann of Vienna, and John-Eric Alfred Mann and Brandon Dwayne Mann, both of Sterling; three sisters, Linda D. Rhees of Clearfield, Utah, Karen S. McCusker of Berkeley Springs, and Laura L. Cooper of Star Tannery; a brother, Nelson H. Mann of Berkeley Springs; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Bishop Christopher Fields officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Margaret P. Myers
Margaret Polhamus Myers, 86, of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Myers was born March 8, 1914, in Berryville, the daughter of Clinton M. and Sarah D. Polhamus.

She owned a grocery store and had retired as a postal clerk in Shenandoah Junction.

She was a graduate of Clarke County High School and attended Shepherd College.

She was a member of Williams Memorial Untied Methodist Church in Shenandoah Junction, where she was the organist for several years.

She was married to John Clive “Happy” Myers, who died March 29, 1981.

Her first husband was Daniel W. Hendricks Sr.

Surviving are three daughters, Suzanne N. Ramsey of Alisa Viejo, Calif., Sara H. Potter of Los Angeles, and Mary Ellen Pastor of Glendora, Calif.; a son, Daniel W. “Danny” Hendricks of Shenandoah Junction; three sisters, Alice P. Link of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mary P. Bonner of Rockville, Md., and Katherine P. Rudolph of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a brother, Thomas S. Polhamus of Berryville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sandra Slazer officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Harry G. Stuart
Harry G. Stuart, 72, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Stuart was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Johnstown, Pa., the son of Roland and Catherine Stuart.

He was retired as a biomedical engineer with the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

He was a Navy veteran.

He was married to Marguerite Noell.

Surviving are a son, Steven Michael Stuart of Stevensville, Md.; three daughters, Terry L. Logel and Luci E. Olvera, both of Winchester, and Loraine D. Parks of Stevensville; a brother, James Donald Stuart of West Virginia; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the VA Hospital Chapel, Martinsburg, with Chaplain Jerry Mehaffey officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the chapel.

Elizabeth P. Trussell
Elizabeth Pauline Trussell, 76, of Bluemont, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mrs. Trussell was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Haymarket, the daughter of Silas and Stella Payne.

She was married to Edward “Jack” Trussell.

Surviving with her husband are her children, Shirley Channell and Jack Trussell, both of Sterling, Barbara Robertson of Houston, Texas, Patsy Kidd of Bluemont, and Jill Kittle and Debbie Jones, both of Winchester; a brother, Ashton Payne; a sister, Betty Lopez; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Darcy L. Quinta-White
Darcy Lynn Quinta-White, infant daughter of David C. White of Front Royal, and Mara L. Quinta of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.

She was born Aug. 5, 2000, in Fredericksburg.

Surviving with her parents are her maternal grandparents, Vincent Quinta of Bon Secour, Ala., and Donna Quinta of Manassas; and her paternal grandparents, Carl F. White of Berryville and A. Joan Brubaker of Front Royal.

A private burial is planned in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Benjamin A. Luttrell
Benjamin Allen Luttrell, 66, of Copperas Cove, Texas, formerly of Frederick County and Boyce, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Temple Hospital.

Mr. Luttrell was born July 15, 1934, in Frederick County. He was raised and educated in Boyce.

He retired in 1968 from the Army after 20 years, with the rank of first sergeant. He served in the Korean War. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with silver bar and loop, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

He was a member of American Legion Post 582 and VFW Post 8577, both of Copperas Cove.

He was married to Goldie Williams.

His first wife, Rachel Elizabeth Luttrell, died Oct. 4, 1991.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Dennis W. Luttrell of Winchester; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service with full military honors will be at 10 a.m. today in Copperas Cove City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children, or to Scott and White Hospital, Research Department, 2401 S. 31st St., Temple, Texas 76508.

Isabelle G. Donica
Isabelle Gulledge Donica, 93, of Jesup, Ga., formerly of Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the home of her son.

Mrs. Donica was a native of Malden, Mo. She had been a school teacher in Winchester and was retired.

She was a former member and past worthy matron of McKinley Chapter 19 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Winchester. She was a member of St. Ann’s Christian Church in St. Ann, Mo., and a former member of Cork Street Christian Church in Winchester.

She was married to Frederick M. Donica Sr.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick M. Donica Jr. of Jesup and Richard B. Donica of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two sisters, Cora Jane Dillick of Florrissant, Mo., and MayDell Bryant of Malden; a brother, Arvil Gulledge of Malden; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shepard Funeral Home, St. Louis, Mo., with the Rev. Mike Allen officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Cemetery, St. Louis.

Pallbearers will be Fred Donica III, Darren Donica, John Dillick, Tim Dillick, Larry Gulledge, Kenny Gulledge, and Teddy Smith.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William A. Freeland
William A. Freeland, 52, of Winchester, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Freeland was born Nov. 15, 1947, in Parkersburg, W.Va., the son of Everett and Olive Freeland.

He was a 1965 graduate of Parkersburg High School.

He was a flight liaison officer at the Federal Aviation Administration in Herndon and had retired from the Air Force, with the rank of master sergeant.

He attended Market Street United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He was married to Kathy Lynn Mills.

Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Parkersburg, are two sons, Kevin Freeland at home and William B. Freeland of Elkview, W.Va.; a daughter, Katlyn Freeland at home; two sisters, Pamela Barnes of Ellenboro, W.Va., and Patricia Guice of Davisville, W.Va.; and two granddaughters.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Parkersburg.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Donald R. Nesmith
Donald R. “Don” Nesmith, 64, of 611 Fairground Road, Front Royal, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Nesmith was born Dec. 19, 1935, in Capon Springs, W.Va., the son of Alston and Hyla LaFollette Nesmith.

He was an operating engineer for SSI Services in Langley and a graduate of Capon Bridge High School.

He attended Willow Chapel United Methodist Church in Capon Springs.

He married Patricia Wolford on Feb. 8, 1958, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife and his mother, of Berryville, are a son, Brent D. Nesmith of Front Royal; a daughter, Susan Nesmith of Beckley, W.Va.; two brothers, Russell Nesmith of Wardensville, W.Va., and Clyde “Joe” Nesmith of Yellow Spring, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Fairview Lutheran Church, Gore, with the Rev. Jack Wardrope officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Ashby, Fred Connoly, James A. Brill, Thomas Jeffries, Dave Harmon, and Paul Rankin.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge.

Clara M. Frederick
Dr. Clara May Frederick, 84, of 106 Westminster Drive, Front Royal, formerly of Urbana, Ohio, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. Frederick was born March 16, 1916, in Edgar County, Ill., the daughter of William and Cora Hall Queen.

She graduated from Defiance College in 1946. She earned her M.S. degree in 1964 and her PhD. degree in 1967 in plant taxonomy from Ohio State University.

She was a professor at Urbana University from 1967 to 1985 and was known for her study of the Cedar Bog ecosystem in Champaign County, Ohio.

She had been a high school teacher and coach at Olive Branch High School in Clark County, Ohio.

She was an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Urbana and then moved to Springfield, Ohio, where she was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church.

She was active in the Association of American University Women and the American Rose Society, and was past state president of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. She was an avid gardener of orchids and her articles were published in horticulture publications.

She traveled throughout the world, including New Zealand, Australia, India, Kenya, and Tanzania.

She was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Urbana Area Chamber of Commerce in 1985, and was listed in Outstanding Educators of America and Who’s Who in American Women.

Her husband of 56 years, Dr. Victor R. Frederick, died in 1992.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Alderman of Winchester and Rosemary Kaufman of Bay City, Texas; a sister, Mary Meuleman of Springfield, Ohio; three brothers, Roger Queen of Springfield, Ohio, Orin Queen of Dayton, Ohio, and John Queen of Jackson County, Ohio; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A son, Dr. V. Ray Frederick Jr., is deceased.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Pastor William R. Withers officiating. Burial will be private in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Peggy A. Halterman
Peggy Ann Frye Halterman, 69, of Bridgewater, formerly of Baker, W.Va., died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Bridgewater Nursing Home.

Mrs. Halterman was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Wardensville, W.Va., the daughter of William M. and Hilda Heishman Frye. She was a school teacher.

She was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, Wardensville, and an associate member of New Dale Church of the Brethren, Baker, W.Va.

She was married to Arthur Casper Halterman.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters, Beverly “Pixie” Taylor of Charlottesville, Deborah Diane Vance of Broadway, and Andrea “Ande” Zeinalpour of Dallas; a son, Arthur W. Halterman of Baker; three brothers, Benjamin Frye and Robert Frye, both of Wardensville, and Kenneth Frye of Woodstock; a sister, Roberta Cappiello of Boston; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

An infant son is deceased.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Baker, with the Rev. Ernest Halterman officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Blue Ridge Chapter, P.O. Box 27326, Richmond 23261.

Denzil R. Kackley
Denzil Raymond Kackley, 98, of 14 Bel Voi Drive, Berryville, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Kackley was born March 18, 1902, in Clarke County, the son of Harrison Lot and Sarah Martha Stevens Kackley.

He was a farmer and a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.

He married Ruby Alberta Rutherford on Dec. 10, 1921, in Clarke County. Mrs. Kackley died Aug. 28, 1980.

Surviving are three sons, Raymond Kackley of Winchester, Lawrence R. Kackley of Dale City, and Charles Kackley of Berryville; a sister, Leora K. Wright of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Winifred LaRue, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Walter Rutherford Jr., Randy Canterbury, Gary Sowers, Jimmy LaRue, Robert Kackley, and Carlton Emmart.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty L. Kerns
Betty L. Kerns, 71, formerly of Haines Drive, Winchester, died Friday, July 28, 2000, in a health care facility in Charles Town, W.Va.

Mrs. Kerns was born May 14, 1929, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Walter G. and Laura A. Miller Kerns.

She worked at National Fruit Products Co. for more than 23 years. She was a bus driver for Frederick County and Winchester public schools for many years.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church and the Salvation Army.

Surviving are a sister, Retha E. Rankins of Berkeley Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Home Health Care at Winchester Medical Center or to the American Diabetes Association.

Robert H. Allen
Robert H. Allen, 74, of Winchester, died Friday, July 28, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Allen was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Watertown, N.Y., the son of J. Howard and Lena Acker Allen.

He was a 1943 graduate of Watertown High School and graduated from Columbia University School of Pharmacy in 1950.

He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and in the Air Force during the Korean War as a B-29 navigator with the rank of first lieutenant.

He was a partner and pharmacist of Miller’s Drug Store Inc. in Winchester, which was the oldest continuously operating drug store in the United States.

He was a member of St. Paul’s on the Hill Episcopal Church, where he was a lay eucharistic minister, past senior warden, and served on numerous committees.

He was one of the founders of the Free Medical Clinic of Winchester, where he was in charge of the pharmacy and served on the board of directors. He was the consultant pharmacist at Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home for 31 years.

He was a member and past president of the Northern Virginia Society of Pharmacists.

He received the Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1991 by the G.D. Serale Co. and the American Pharmacist Journal.

He married Virginia H. White on June 26, 1971, in Charles Town, W.Va. His first wife, June E. Henshall Allen, is deceased.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Thomas H. Allen of Winchester; a daughter, Charlotte Anne Allen of Winchester; two stepdaughters, Wendy Redfield Sumerlin of Shacklefords and Linda Bennett Gerrek of Suffolk; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's on the Hill Episcopal Church, Winchester, with the Rev. G. Edward Dunlap, the Rev. David C. Wayland, and the Rev. S. Neale Morgan officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Free Medical Clinic, 12 E. Cork St., Winchester 22601; or to St. Paul’s on the Hill Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 1527 Senseny Road, Winchester 22602.
