Cornick
Rose Marie Killinger Cornick, 74, widow of Robert Madison Cornick Jr., died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1930 in Abingdon to the late James Fred Killinger and Rosalind Thompson Peery, she was educated at Marion Senior High School, Sullins College in Bristol, Tenn., and graduated in 1949 from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
She was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church serving on the Alter Guild and directing the choir for many years. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as a long-time member of the Chapter 10 Board in Marion. She also co-founded Olde Virginia Gift and Stationary, a popular gift shop in downtown Marion for many years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Virginia Bauman and husband, John Ben of Mt. Sidney. Two sons, James Killinger Cornick of Richmond, and John Macon Cornick and wife, Gina of Raleigh, N.C. Five grandchildren, Sarah Marie and John Nikolaus Bauman, Christina Marie Cornick, Mary Catherine Cornick, and Macon Louise Cornick. Special friends, Penny and James Bise of Rural Retreat, Virginia also survive.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. The family received friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Women, 409 W. Davis
Mary Irene Tolliver Davis, 82, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Grayson County to the late Luther and Edna Testerman Tolliver.
She was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church, the VFW Post 4667 Ladies Auxillary and had worked at Southwest Virginia State Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Davis; five sons and daughters-in-law, Corben and Lucille Shuler, C.L. and JoAnn Shuler, Dean and Gaynelle Davis, Burl and Carol Davis and Estell Davis, all of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Opal and Fred Overbay of Glade Spring; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Richardson, Dean Allen Davis, Billie Jo Davis, Derek Davis, Greg Ward, Rick Shuler, Michelle Shuler, Tina Henderson, Regina Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Amber, Brooke, Channing, Hope, Zachary, Trevor; two brothers, John R. Tolliver of Statesville, N.C., and Ira Tolliver of Salem; and two sisters, Joy Spencer of Atkins and Margaret Heath of Glade Spring.
Funeral services were held Friday morning, April 1, 2005, at Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Mark Lundy officiated the ceremony. Interment followed in Davis Cemetery.

Kidwell
Troy Kidwell, 36, of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., died Saturday, March 26, 2005, in Charlotte, N.C.
He was born in Sundance, Wyo., where he inherited the rugged, independent outdoor spirit of the west.
He is the son of James and Edna Kidwell of Damascus.
He lived most of his life in Millersville, Md., where he loved playing baseball and football. It was in Maryland he was baptized before moving to his ancestral home of Damascus in 1999. In Damascus after teaming with his father and two dogs, for many years driving long haul trucks, he started his own business called, J & T Backhoe Service. He lived in the mountains of Tennessee and never failed to care for strays that were lucky enough to cross his path. He never met a stranger and always had a smile and hug to share.
His favorite time of the year was the annual family reunion, where he was a favorite among the aunts, uncles and cousins.
Survivors include his parent, James and Edna Kidwell of Damascus; one son, Troy Wayne Kidwell Jr. of Pasadena, Md.; one brother and sister-in-law, Michael Lee and Rebecca Kidwell of Mansfield, Mass.; his paternal grandparents, Jennings and Francis Kiner of Essex, Md.; two nephews, Jacob Kidwell and Joshua Kidwell; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday evening, March 30, 2005, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Danny Adams officiated the ceremony. The committal service and interment was held Thursday morning, March 31, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus.

Martin
William "Billy" E. Martin, 85, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He was a graduate of VPI, a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II, a Smyth County farmer, a trucking contractor and a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Grethel Fields Martin; two sons, William E. Martin Jr. and wife, Laura, and Lee Howard Martin, both of Chilhowie; one daughter, Linda A. Martin of Charleston, S.C., one sister, Edith M. Burrows of Marion; one grandson, William "Willie" E. Martin and wife, Betty; two great-grandchildren, Steven and Virginia Lynn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Edwin Troutman and Pastor Mary Ann Jones officiating. Interment was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home.

Moore
Mary Ellen Widner Moore, 75, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born May 13, 1929, in Seven Mile Ford to the late Clyde and Georgia Hash Widner. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a stepmother, Myrtie Combs Widner, and a brother, John Widner.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Louise Thomas of Speedwell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Merlie Moore of Christiansburg and Roy and Betty Moore of Atkins; four half-sisters, Mattie Riley of Bronx, N.Y., Lois Lind of Orr, Minn., Loarine Osborne and Grace Canada, both of Lake Worth, Fla.; five half-brothers, James J. Widner of Alabama, Preston Widner of Hillsville, Raymond Widner of Wytheville, Bobby Widner of Chilhowie and Dean Widner of Rural Retreat; nine grandchildren, Billy, Bobby, Samantha, Jason, and Joey Moore, Frankie Thomas, Mary Linkous, Chris Shupe, and Corietha Dalton;15 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Brenda Robbins, Lena Newman, and Brenda Hopkins.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, April 1, 2005 at Seaver-Brown Chapel. The Rev. Mike Sage officiated the ceremony. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery in Adwolfe.

Pennington
Bynum Lee Pennington, 76, died Monday, March 28, 2005, in Arlington, Wash. He was born on March 3, 1929 in Konnarock to the late Harvey and Margaret "Suzy" Pennington and was preceded in death by three brothers: Richard Lawrence, Robert and James and one sister, Emma Carol.
After retirement from the U.S. Navy and the Boeing corporation, he enjoyed traveling, camping, woodworking and gardening. But, most of all, he enjoyed his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: his wife, Kay Pennington; ex-wife, Mary Ellen Parsons; four daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda P. McKim and husband, Al, of Woodinville, Wash., Vicky P. Daniels and husband, Steve, of Kent, Wash., Janet P. Greer and husband, Junior, of Marion, and Cindy P. Jordan and husband, Jim, of Maryville, Wash; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bob" Pennington of Sumner, Wash., and David Pennington and wife, Cindy, of Aberdeen, Wash.; three sisters, Irene Neitch, Edith Hall and Helen Hall; one brother, Herbert Pennington, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Laurel Cemetery in Konnarock with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Porter
Robb Sterl Porter Jr., 47, of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in Greensboro, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cindy Baxter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat, an environmental geologist, a professional pilot, and an airplane mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robb Sterl Porter Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Carla Perkins Porter of the home; a daughter, Lindsay Ruth Porter of the home; a son, Robb Sterl Porter III of the home; his mother, Helen F. Porter of Rural Retreat; a brother, Andrew Frank Porter of Rural Retreat; two nephews, Andrew Porter, and Jeremy Porter; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Hazel Perkins of Marion; and several aunts and uncles.

Poston
Jackie O. Poston, 69, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. After a courageous battle, he has no pain.
He was born in Smyth County to the late Rev. Hubert Spencer Poston and Gerturde Olinger Poston and was preceded in death by a sister Betty Poston.
He was veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict.
He was retired from Brunswick Defense Corp. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Marion and Rich Valley, the American Legion and the Francis Marion FVW Post 4667, and also the Smyth County Moose Lodge 1004.
Survivors include four daughters, Patty Poston Blevins and Penny Poston Blevins, both of Marion, Cynthia Poston Jones of Chilhowie, and Celeste Poston Williams of Greensboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Charity Hope Doss, David Randall Taylor II, Jared Allen Blevins, Michael Anthony Dominquez, Derek Scott Blevins, Amy Celest Williams and Scott Walter Williams; one great-grandchild, Austin Tyler Doss; and special companions, Maggie, Max, Pepper and Jack.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 1, 2005, at the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mike Sage officiated the ceremony. Interment followed at Ridgedale Cemetery. Masonic rites will be rendered by the Masonic Lodge #31 AF & AM and military honors will be conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Shumate
Evelyn Brooks Shumate, 92, widow of Dixie Lee Shumate, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a member of Falling Water Baptist Church, the Garden Club, and Order of the Eastern Star Marion Chapter #72, where she was a past matron. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dixie L. Shumate Jr. and Eddie Shumate.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jerry Baker of Marion; one sister, Juanita Anderson of Sugar Grove; four grandchildren, Karen Braddock and husband, Jim, Heather Cooke, Tim Boyd, and Chris Boyd; two great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Poore of Bristol, Tenn.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Fall Water Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Lewis and the Rev. Dr. Mark Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The family received friends Friday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel. West
Trula Gladys Steele West, 97, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the home of her niece, Jane Blevins in Marion.
She was born to the late Harvey Edward Steele and Alice Louisa McGlothin Steele. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn West; six sisters, Della Steele, Winnie Steele Harrison, Grace Steele Catron, Callie Steele Dempsey, Carrie Steele Burgess, Delsie Steele Green; five brothers, Earl Steele, Roscoe Steele, Samuel Steele, Claude Steele and Virgil Steele.
For all who knew her, her constant companion was the Lord.
Survivors included many nieces and nephews.
