Hoover
Gladys Hoover, age 80, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of John Verlin Hoover.
She is survived by two sons, Clifton Hoover of Atkins, and Wesley Hoover of Marion; six sisters, Ella Oakes of Chatham Hill, Audry Meadows of Rural Retreat, Olivene Atwell and Elsie Cameron, both of Groseclose, Patsy Siep of Decatur, Ind., and Ovell Doane of Marion, Ky.; two brothers, Darsey Gillespie of Groseclose, and Henry Gillespie of Seminole, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Bill Haymaker and Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Burial was in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley.

Owens
Roy Albert Owens, age 68, of Chilhowie, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Owens was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Owens, Chilhowie; three daughters, Barbara Kauffman, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Elaine Harris and Celeste King Owens, both of Alexandria; four sons, Ronnie Owens and Donnie Owens, both of Wichita, Kansas, Robert Owens, address unknown, and Thomas M. Owens, Dublin; three stepdaughters, Shirley J. Hamm, Theresa L. Jackson, and Sharon K. Jackson, all of Marion; two brothers, Howard Owens and Jim Owens, both of Chilhowie; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be no public funeral service. Friends may call at the home of Mr. Owens.

Scott
John Carroll Scott, age 72, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 at his home in Covington.
Mr. Scott was born Dec. 8, 1927 in Smyth County, the son of the late Charles W. and Carrie Snider Scott. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Alan Scott in 1990, and a brother, Nathan K. Scott in 1971.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had retired in 1990 as a Research Engineer after 28 years with the former Hercules Inc., plant in Covington.
Mr. Scott was a member and Past Worshipful Master of Covington Lodge #171 AF & AM and was currently serving as secretary for the lodge. He was a Past District Deputy for the Grand Lodge of Virginia and a member of the Covington Royal Arch Chapter. He had also been a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA and for Safehomes in Covington. He was a member and Elder of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church and had served on the Board of Deacons at the church.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Beth Collie Scott of Covington; one son, Steve Scott of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Dan Michalski of Madison, Wisc.; two grandchildren, Sam Michalski and Kelli Michalski, both of Madison, Wisc.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Helen Scott of Kingsport, Tenn., Jake and Madeline Scott of Marion, Benjamin and Margaret Scott of Weber City, and Charles and Joyce Scott of Kilmarnock; one sister and brother-in-law, Sallie and Robert Carnahan of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. James R. Terry officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by Covington Lodge #171 AF & AM at the service. The family will receive friends after the service until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Following the service, Mr. Scott's body will be cremated and a committal service to inter his ashes at his family's cemetery in Wythe County will be held at a later date. The family suggests that donations in Mr. Scott's name be made to Mountain Regional Hospice, 525 Main St., Clifton Forge, VA 24422.

Testerman
Pansy Ethel Testerman, age 59, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Testerman was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Jackson Testerman.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Dianne Van Alstine, Savage, Md., and Maria Testerman, Marion; four grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Cox and Annie Mae Osborne, both of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Parker and the Rev. Bob Surber officiating. Burial followed in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Blevins
Elsie Viola Blevins, age 85, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000 in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
She was the widow of Les Henry Blevins.
Survivors include one son, T.O. Blevins of Chilhowie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and James F. Vernon of Kernersville, N.C., and Wanda and Arthur L. Vernon of Stockbridge, Ga.; three grandsons, Greg, Scott and Chris Vernon; one great-granddaughter, Peyton Vernon; two sisters, Lois Pittman of Bristol, and Myrtle Clark of Baltimore, Md.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Earl Eugene Bowling, age 50, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at his home in Fredericksburg.
Mr. Bowling owned and operated EB Excavation Company for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Faye Heckert, and his stepfather, Al Heckert, both of Marion.
Surviving are his brother, Donald Edward Bowling of Ladysmith; his father, Edward Franklin Montgomery of Seaford, Del.; four stepsisters, Phyllis A. Bowling of Fredericksburg, Christola F. Effie Blevins Brooks, age 90, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
She was the widow of Hershel Brooks and was also preceded in death by a son, J.C. Brooks.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lena and Barney Plummer of Troutdale; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Kayetta Brooks and Linville and Rita Brooks, all of Marion; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

Mullins
George W. Mullins Jr., age 74, of New London, N.C., and formerly of Crockett, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 in the Stanley Co. Memorial Hospital in Albemarle, N.C.
Mr. Mullins was born in McDowell County, W.Va., the son of the late George W. Sr. and America Hagerman Mullins. He was preceded in death by a son, James Anthony Mullins, and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Carolin Ann Carpenter Mullins, of the home; three sons, George Washington Mullins III, of the home, Randy Mullins and Lundy Mullins, both of Ohio; one daughter, Brenda Mullins of Ohio; two sisters, Lou Emmi Wright, Radford, and Rosa Stephenson, Princeton, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Powell
David R. "Pooch" Powell, age 65, of Huntsville, Ala., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000.
Mr. Powell worked 45 years for General Shale Products Corp. and was a member of the Possum Hollow Sportsman’s Association.
Survivors include his wife, Frances M. Powell of Huntsville, Ala.; one son, David Wayne Powell; one brother, Melvin Powell of Atkins; one sister, Betty Joe Trail, Marion.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. at Twickenham Funeral Home-East Chapel with entombment at Twickenham Memory Gardens.

Williams
Roy Lee (R.L.) Williams, age 64, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Williams was a prominent businessman and contractor in Smyth County. He had been in the roofing and contracting business for over 40 years and was owner and president of R.L. Williams and Sons which opened in 1979. He was active in the community and donated many hours and supplies to community projects.
Mr. Williams attended the South Fork Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Williams and a brother, Connie Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Nettie F. Williams; his mother, Bessie D. Williams, Dublin; five sons, Ronnie Williams and wife Kathy, Bobby Williams and wife Teresa, Paul Williams and wife Amy Tuell Williams, John G. Williams, all of Marion, Michael Williams, Chilhowie; two daughters, Brenda W. Lester and husband Butch, Chilhowie, and Frances W. Helton
Shirley Anderson Helton, age 58, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 at her home in Marion.
Mrs. Helton was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church and was the president of the Professional Business Women’s Club in Abingdon. She was employed by the Smyth County Water and Sewer Department for many years as well as working part-time for Mahaffey Real Estate Agency.
She is survived by her husband, James W. "Bill" Helton of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michele and B.J. Bear of Rural Retreat, and Cynthia and Warren Rouse of Marion; two granddaughters, Kristina Perkins and Kayla Rouse, both of Marion; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Bobby Doyle of Wytheville, and Dorothy and Allen Stevenson of Rich Valley; three brothers and one-sister-in-law, Neal and Minnie Anderson, John C. Anderson and Robert Anderson, all of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. at Faith Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Lundy and Pastor David Brown officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. Pallbearers were Bradley Gwin, Louie Stevenson, Larry Stevenson, Jerry Oakes, John Hollandsworth, and Elmer Lundy; honorary pallbearers were Wilber Holmes, Mike Neal, Curtis Burgess, Phil Stevenson, and Johnny Wyatt.

Jewel Lee "Judy" Haulsee King, age 58, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 at her home in Rural Retreat.
Mrs. King was born in Marion, the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Pauline Ruth Hubble Haulsee. She was an employee of Edgemont Center and a member of Crockett Tabernacle Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. "Slim" King.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Randy Shelton of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald "Rusty" and Karen "Cindy" King of Cripple Creek; three grandchildren, Amanda Shelton, Randy "Bubba" Shelton Jr., and Ronnie King II; two brothers, Bobby Joe Haulsee, Vale, N.C., and David Haulsee, Rural Retreat; her stepmother, Ruby Haulsee of Wytheville; one stepdaughter, Gloria Jean Parker of Newport News; one stepson and wife, Walter Lee "Junior" and Charlotte King of Wytheville; one stepbrother, Wayne Wright of Greenville, Tenn.; aunts and uncles, Jack and Nellie Funk and Bob and Nancy Thompson, all of Marion. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
