Stevenson
Ellen Proctor Stevenson, age 80, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
Born in Leon County, Florida, Mrs. Stevenson grew up in Tallahassee and had lived in Washington and Smyth counties since 1979. She was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Anges Proctor. She was a devoted mother, an avid animal lover and enjoyed her talents as an artist and cartoonist as well as writing and composing poetry. She was of the Methodist faith, attended the Half-Century Club at the Emory United Methodist Church and was a sincere follower of Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Hoffman.
She is survived by two sons: L.P. Stevenson, Knoxille, Tenn., and Thomas L. Stevenson, Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Linell Rowland, Emory, and Lucy Ameigh, Lincolnton, N.C.; one brother, Edward Proctor, Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Lucile Aycock, Ashland, Oregon; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted today, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the Emory United Methodist Church with Rev. James Bennington officiating. The family will receive friends in the Cole Parlor at Emory United Methodist Church following the service.

Suddarth
Virginia Harding Suddarth of Fluvanna County, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Heritage Hall, Charlottesville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon H. Harding, Sr., and Mary Farish Harding; her husband, Douglas Stinson Suddarth; one brother, Leon H. Harding, Jr.; two sisters, Mary Lou Martin and Helen H. Thomas; one granddaughter, Kathy Brown and a son-in-law, Douglas Earl Vess, Sr.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Douglas and Faye Suddarth of Marion, James H. and Joyce Suddarth of Charlottesville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Ann and Carl Breeden of Scottsville, and Gloria S. Vess of Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Scottsville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home.

Gage
Wallace Henderson Gage, age 85, of Henrico County, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico County.
Mr. Gage was born in Eagle Bridge, N.Y., on Oct. 19, 1915. He was educated at the Williams College (Massachusetts) Preparatory School, Connecticut Wesleyan University, and the University of the South (Sewanee).
During his senior college year, he was driving back to New York via the Wilderness Trail Route (U.S. 11) and was hit by another car at the Staley’s Crossroads near Rural Retreat. Hospitalized for a long time, he met a nurse named Fern Isbell Hall. They stayed in contact throughout World War II. After graduating from college, Mr. Gage was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served four years at the Hickman Army Air Field at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After Pearl Harbor, he was kept in the U.S. Army in Air Weather Service and then logistics and finance. He served in the Pacific Theatre, finally ending in the Philippines.
He married Fern Hall in September 1945 at Williamstown, Mass. They worked in Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis before settling in Richmond where he worked for the Glen Falls Insurance Company and his wife worked for the Medical College of Virginia. They later moved to Henrico County. After retiring at age 65, Mr. Gage became involved in a chapter of the Pearl Harbor’s Survivors Association for his old Army unit. He remained active until mid-2000.
Surviving are his wife, Fern Isbell Hall Gage of Henrico County, formerly of Rural Retreat; one son, Samuel Wallace Gage II, Henrico County; three brothers-in-law and spouses, Harry H. and Sarah Hall, John F. Hall, all of Rural Retreat, Fred Neal and Rosemary Hall of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 3, at the Saint Matthews Episcopal Church in Richmond.
Graveside services will be held today, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat with Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Saint Matthews Episcopal Church Building or Organ Fund, 1101 Forest Ave., Richmond, VA 23229. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jones
Mary Virginia Jones, age 73, of Groseclose, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Jones was a lifelong resident of Smyth County. She attended the Groseclose Church of God and was retired from Harwood.
Surviving are her husband of over 52 years, Robert P. Jones; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Anna Jones, Cooper and Frances Jones, all of Groseclose, and David and Darlene Jones, Adwolfe; her mother, Nannie Lamie, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren, Mike, Brandon, Mary Ellen, Jessica, Justian, Jonathon and Robert; two sisters, Lula Havens and Martha Lamie, both of Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. in Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Norb Bennetts officiating. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Meek
John S. Meek, age 73, of DeLand, Fla., died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at Florida Hospital in DeLand.
Mr. Meek was born in State College, Penn. He was a retired electrical engineer from Brunswick Corp, retiring in 1983.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in Korea.
Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Sherrie M. and Lewis J. Reedy, Rural Retreat, and Joni M. Travner, Brevard, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Eleanor Smith, State College, Penn.; one sister, Miriam Shawley, Port Matilda, Penn; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; companion and caregiver, Dottie Gladue of Cassadaga, Fla.
Funeral services and burial will be held in DeLand, Fla.

Mitchell
Ernest Mitchell, age 73, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Mitchell was a retired employee of the Town of Saltville after 41 years. He is a member of the Saltville VFW Post 7328.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha Lois Mitchell; two sons, Carl D. Mitchell, Saltville, and Ernest E. Mitchell, Abingdon; two daughters, Freda Blevins, Saltville, and Marie Widener, Marion; two brothers, Stanley Mitchell, California, and James Mitchell, Roanoke; four sisters, Shelby Jean Helton, Roanoke, Della Mae Olson, North Carolina, Jo-Ella (Sis) Debord and Norma Lee Hayden, both of Saltville; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Friday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. in the Mount Rose Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Briggs and the Rev. Wade Kestner officiating.

Powers
Clarence Lee Powers, age 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 at his home in Chilhowie.
Mr. Powers was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church where he was the teacher of the Bible class for 60 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the European Theater. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Virginia Blankenbeckler Powers; one son and daughter-in-law, Roy Clay and Becky Powers, Chilhowie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma and Denver Doss, Glade Spring, and Fay and Paul Greer, Chilhowie; five sisters, Virginia Heath and Grey Grinstead, both of Chilhowie, Mae Gibson, Aliceville, Ala., Dorothy Pollard, Baltimore, Md., and June Brinkley, Bristol; one granddaughter and husband, Sheila and Bob Whetstone; one grandson and wife, Larry and Chloe Greer; one great-grandson, Cooper Greer; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins, the Rev. Tim Blevins, the Rev. Warren Wilson and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Sloper
Mattie Sexton Sloper, age 86, of Manassas, formerly of Teas, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000 at her home.
Mrs. Sloper was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late William Preston and Bertha Rose Sexton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Melvin Sloper, and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by three daughters, Diane Delp, Sandy Pittman, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and Bonnie Taylor, Sugar Grove; one brother, James Sexton, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Medley officiating. Interment will follow in the Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

White
Joseph "J.J." White, age 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Bundy White.
Mr. White was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from Appalachian Power Co. He thoroughly enjoyed being a grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Doug Blaylock, Tehachapi, Calif., and Joie and Jimmy Shuler of Marion; one sister, Minnie A. White of Cedar Bluff; three grandchildren, Jeff Shuler and wife Sarah, Doug Blaylock Jr., and Scott Blaylock and wife Amy; three great-grandchildren; a special friend, Genie McVey.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Mark Ross and Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354.

Blevins
Charles Eltas Blevins, age 62, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Blevins was born in Smyth County to the late Barney Eltas and Bessie Ovella Blevins. He was a member of the Marion Masonic Lodge #31 AF & AM and the Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He was retired from Brunswick with over 38 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Ieta Blevins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Buddy Galliher, Lori and Edwin Hagy, all of Marion; three grandchildren, Joshua Galliher, Whitney Galliher, and Brianna Hagy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Joyce Blevins, Marion, and Bobby and Marie Blevins, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one niece and three nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jim Bangle officiating. Entombment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery with Masonic rites. Fletcher
Milton O. "Milt" Fletcher, age 82, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000 at his home in Campobello, S.C.
Mr. Fletcher was a native of Richland, Ga. He attended Gramling United Methodist Church in Gramling S.C. A veteran of World War II, he served as a Stars and Stripes correspondent in England for most of the war years. He was a member of VFW Post 4667.
He served as manager of Chambers of Commerce in Douglas, Moultrie and Rome, Ga., and served as manager of the local Chamber of Commerce Service Department of the United States Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C., from 1961 until his retirement in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nell Grantham Fletcher.
He is survived by one son, Milton W. Fletcher of Campobello, S.C.; two daughters, Mary Lynn Conway of Campobello, S.C., and Ann Saufley of Marion; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at Gramling United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foothills Humane Society, Little Mountain Road, Route 5, Box 2866, Columbus, N.C. 28722.
