Horne
Elizabeth Munsey Horne, age 90, of Sugar Grove, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.
Mrs. Horne was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late John D. Sr. and Katherine Florence Munsey Horne. She was a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Horne.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Frances W. Horne, of the home; special nieces, nephews and spouses: Phyllis H. and Clifford Jones, Clayton and Fran Horne, all of Rural Retreat, Charles R. and Belinda Horne, Marion, and Frances Taylor, Elizabethton, Tenn.; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 5, at 4:30 p.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Blue Springs United Methodist Church.
Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of arrangements.

Hutton
Kathleen Long Hutton, age 85, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000.
Mrs. Hutton was the owner and operator of Hutton Florist in Sugar Grove for 42 years. She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard G. Hutton.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Patricia D. Hutton of Sugar Grove; two step-grandchildren, Robbie Horne and wife Jennie of Martinsville, and Debbie Blankenbeckler and husband Darrell of Sugar Grove; two step-great-grandchildren, Cody and Justin Horne of Martinsville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Burial followed in Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Jones
Mildred "Gray" Jones, age 69, of Saltville, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Jones Jr.; her parents, William and Vallie P. Gillespie; a brother, Harold "Jake" Gillespie; and her sister, Olivene G. Haulsee.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Lynn Jones, Saltville; one daughter, Patty Jones, Saltville; two sisters, Phyllis G. McGee, Chilhowie, and Lois "Titter" Williams, Marion; one very special granddaughter, Serina Jones.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Elizabeth Cemetery.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Maiden
Wallace Rufus Maiden, age 53, of Saltville, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Maiden was a disabled Army veteran having served in the Dominican Republic Conflict in the 307th Medical Battalion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Betty Maiden.
Surviving are one brother, Melvin Maiden, Chesapeake; several aunts and cousins.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 9, at 2:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., with military rites conducted by the American Legion Hammonds Post #3, Kingsport, Tenn.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Wilson
Ester Gray Wilson, age 88, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by a son, Edward Franklin Wilson.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Bertie Wilson of Independence; one sister-in-law, Beulah Medley of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at Attoway Cemetery with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Adkison
Robert Oury Adkison, age 51, of Norfolk, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000 of injuries received in an automobile accident in Springfield.
He was a self-employed realtor in Norfolk.
Surviving are two daughters, Shandra Dean, Montgomery, Texas, and Cathleen Ann A. Contreaas, Fayetteville, N.C.; one son, Christian A. Adkison, Centreville; his mother, Nannie Lee Adkison, Norfolk; one brother, James Edward Adkison, Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Rolen officiating. Burial was in the Middle Fork Cemetery.
Williams Funeral Home of Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

Burkett
Nannie Holmes Gillespie Burkett, age 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Burkett was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital and was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church.
Surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene Speer and Jackie Widener, both of Marion, Susie V. (Polly) Wells and William (Bill) Carnes, New Kent, Bonnie Burkett, Richmond, and Jo Rheda and Jack Roten, Forest; one son, Gregory D. Burkett, Marion; five grandchildren, Kim Blevins, Eddie Speer, Tanya Rosser, Crystal Pierce and Joshua Widener; four great-grandchildren, Siera Speer, Paxton Rosser, Hank Rosser, Greyson Pierce; her special companion, Sunshine; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in the Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Riverside United Methodist Church.

Hart
J.C. Hart, age 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at his home in Chilhowie.
Mr. Hart was born in Smyth County to the late Elder Stephen Hart and Lora Blevins Hart. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired Chief Jailer from the Smyth County Sheriff’s Department with over 33 years of service. He was also a member of the Sheriff’s Association for several years.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Eller; two brothers, Lillard and Onnie Hart; and six infant brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Hart; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Ernie Atwell, Atkins; three grandsons, Evan, Ethan, and Elliott Atwell; one sister and brother-in-law, Edna and James Pennington, Chilhowie; one brother, James Hart, Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews; many, many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church in Chilhowie with the Rev. Charles Blevins and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Helton
Doris Poore Helton, age 82, of Saltville, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Born Oct. 7, 1918, Mrs. Helton was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle Helton. She was a lifetime resident of Smyth County and a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, W. Kenneth and Susan Helton of Durham, N.C., and Kyle and Dixie Helton of Camden, Ark.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin H. (Brenda) Story of Spartanburg, S.C., and Mr. and Mrs. John C. (Judy) Crews of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Kyle Helton, Rebecca Helton Landau, Caroline Helton Kaplan, W. Kenneth Helton Jr., Julie Story Byerley, Christopher Edwin Story, and January Carrol Crews; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Williams officiating. Burial was in the Mount Rose Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Route 2, Box 75H, Saltville, VA 24370.

Hodges
William D. Hodges, age 67, a long time resident of Aurora, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000 at Provena Fox Knoll.
Mr. Hodges was born in Virginia on Feb. 13, 1933. He graduated with an engineering degree from Virginia Tech. He served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. After retiring from the Air Force, he was a Captain for American Airlines for 25 years.
Survivors include his former wife and longtime friend, Alma Ruth Basilone of Sylacauga, Ala.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Daleiden Lake Street Mortuary in Aurora with the Rev. Steven Good officiating.
Graveside services will be held today, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. in Round Hill Cemetery in Marion.
Barnett’s Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Hubble
Marie Pruner Hubble, age 74, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 in Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Hubble was retired from Southwestern State Hospital after 20 years of nursing service.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Ralph T. Hubble of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Jonnie Bell and Ray Lowery of Marion; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Richard and Bonnie Hubble of Boonesmill; four stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Patricia and Tony Wykle of Christiansburg, Darlene and Donnie Richardson of Stanton, Ky., Linda and J.C. Woolridge of Skygusty, W.Va., and Joyce and Lynn Cody of Robbinsville, N.C.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Maude and Tom Moore of Marion, and Mary Kate Greer of Atkins; two sisters-in-law, Velma Cook of Marion, and Myrtle Cook of Radford; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 6, at 11 .am. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Little officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Meek
Lillian Rachel Hutton Meek, age 70, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was the widow of Roy Allen Meek Jr.
Mrs. Meek was the daughter of the late James Edward and Helen Holloway Hutton. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and taught in both the Washington County and Pulaski County public schools. She was a member of the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Shawn Meek, Jim and Barbara Meek, all of Draper, Joe and Lisa Meek, Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Rob Morgan, Wytheville, and Helen and Rodney Neely, Falls Church; two brothers and sister-in-law, Ed Hutton, James R. "Bill" and Cathy Hutton, both of Glade Spring; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Maggie and William Naylor, Glade Spring, Bonnie and Scott Duncan, Georgia and Wayne Moore, all of Meadowview; seven grandchildren: Adam, Lauren, Conrad, Leigh Ann, Sarah and Allyson Meek, and Owen Morgan.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. in Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade with the Rev. Timothy E. bird officiating. A second service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Draper Valley Presbyterian Church with Dr. Cortez R. Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, Draper Valley Presbyterian Church or charity of choice.
