Duncan
Franklin E. Duncan, age 73, of Colonial Heights, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
Mr. Duncan was a native of Smyth County and was a retired plant manager for Pet Dairy Co. He was a member of the Mountain View Methodist Church in Chilhowie.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey A. Duncan, and Jamie S. and Amy P. Duncan, all of Colonial Heights; one grandson, Nicholas S. Duncan; two brothers, Kyle Duncan of Hopewell, and Kent Duncan of Tennessee; one sister, Shirley Manuel of Texas; Arlene W. Duncan and Josephine Wolfe also survive him.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, at noon at the Mountain View Methodist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie with the Rev. John Graham officiating. Everyone is requested to meet at the cemetery.

Gallimore
Larry D. Gallimore, age 56, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at his home in Atkins.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Kruer Gallimore; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa Condra of Maulden, S.C.; two daughters, Christina Gallimore of Virginia Beach, and Clara Gallimore of California; seven grandchildren; his stepfather, Orville Kintz of Jenner, Calif.; one stepbrother, Donald Kintz of Warren, Ore.; one stepsister, Suzanne Pryde of Sacramento, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Gwyn
John R. Gwyn, age 67, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 in Georgia.
Mr. Gwyn was formerly of Glade Spring and was a retired Master Sergeant from the United States Army having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Pruitt Gwyn of Lincolnton, Ga.; one daughter, Sarah Gwyn Hayes of Georgia; one son, Johnny Gwyn of California; two brothers, Kenneth Gwyn of California, and Joe Gwyn of Marion; three grandchildren; several cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from Marion and the surrounding area.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 10, in Georgia.

Lindamood
Margaret Martin Lindamood, age 91, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 in Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Lindamood was born in Wythe County on Oct. 2, 1909, the daughter of the late Tobie Sanders and Catherine Ryan Martin. She was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Rural Retreat Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred A. Lindamood.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy L. Stidham, Roswell, Ga.; one granddaughter, Jill Stidham, Milledgeville, Ga.; two sisters, Mozelle Shannon, Glade Spring, and Aliene Walker, Roanoke; one brother, Jack Martin, Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. James Jenkins and the Rev. George Jones officiating. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 307, Rural Retreat, VA 24368.

Hawkins
Ellen Hawkins, age 89, of Westminster-Canterbury of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mrs. Hawkins was born Dec. 9, 1911 in Marion, the daughter of the late Rachel Sexton and William W. Hawkins. During most of her life she was connected with schools and served as Alumnae Director at Stratford College in Danville and at Chatham Hall in Chatham. One of her major interests was the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History of which she was a member until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion.
She is survived by one brother, Edward R. Hawkins of St. Francisville, La.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Private burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, 975 Main St., Danville, VA 24541 or the Westminster-Canterbury of Lynchburg, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503. Little
Fred R. Little Jr., age 71, of Atkins, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Little was the son of the late Fred and Essie Little of Lansing, N.C. He retired from Brunswick Corporation with over 40 years of service. He was the owner of Little Auto Sales and was an avid family man.
Mr. Little was preceded in death by a grandson, Dylan Randolph Fender.
He is survived by his wife, June Rupard Little of Atkins; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Sam Blevins of Galax, Teresa and Bill McDonald of Blacksburg, and Donna and Doug Fender of Marion; five grandchildren, Samantha Blevins, Stephanie Blevins, Douglas Fender, Savannah Fender, and Joseph Randolph McDonald; one sister, Jewell Osborne of Glade Spring; one brother, Charles Little of Abingdon; several nieces, nephews and cousins including a special cousin, Ken Osborne of Marion.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Little, the Rev. Grady Byrd and the Rev. Lewis Fender officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery where Masonic Rites were conducted by Marion Masonic Lodge #31 A.F. & A.M.

Steffey
Christy Catron Steffey, age 96, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at her home in Rural Retreat.
Mrs. Steffey was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late John Russell and Susan Powers Catron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee Steffey; and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janie Steffey and Jim Williams, Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, William Franklin and Linda Steffey, Pulaski; one brother, Harold Catron, Princeton, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Mark Williams, Sherry Van Antwerp, Susan Wirt, Sonya Shelton, and Sarah Tuggle; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Duncan, Kayla Williams, and Newton Williams.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. in the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rufus A. Brock and the Rev. Herman Sarver officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Alton G. "Slim: Turman, age 63, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Turman served in the U.S. Marine Corp and was a retired carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Linda B. Turman of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Tyler Kidd of Richmond; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Susan Turman of Taylorsville, N.C., and Christopher and Shannon Turman of Ashburn; two grandchildren, Owen Turman and Chad Turman, both of Taylorsville, N.C.; one sister, Nancy Cannaday of Riner; two brothers, Robert Turman of Sperryville, and Joe Turman of Willis; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. at Turman Family Cemetery in Floyd County with the Rev. S.G. Bolt officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Grover King VFW Post #1115 of Hillsville.

McCord
Kathyrn F. McCord died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at her home in Fairfax.
She was the widow of Theodore B. McCord.
Surviving are two sons, Theodore B. McCord Jr., Centreville, and Michael H. McCord of Marion; one daughter, Mary Lodholz of Ferguson, Mo.; five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax on Friday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. Inurnment was at Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 1576, Merrifield, VA 22116-1576.

Charlie "Sonny" Neal, age 51, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at his home in Chilhowie.
Mr. Neal was a native of Saltville and a former employee of Moss Trucking Co.
Surviving are his parents, Henry and Bessie Neal of Saltville; two brothers, Danny Neal and David Neal, both of Saltville; one sister, Christine Puckett of Glade Spring; very special friends, Roscoe and "Granny " Vannoy of Chilhowie.

Aileen Jennings Sutherland, age 84, of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C.
Mrs. Sutherland was born Nov. 4, 1916 at Independence to Letcher and Bessie McKnight Jennings. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Independence and an active member of Bridle Creek Senior Citizens Group in Independence.
She was the widow of Hays Sutherland.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Gary N. and Linda B. Sutherland, Marion; one grandson, Jason N. Sutherland, Cornelius, N.C.; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruby M. Jennings, Betty J. Ward, both of Independence, Louise J. Shores, Greenville, N.C., and Donna J. and R.G. James, Sparta, N.C.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Mary Jennings, Clearbrook, the Rev. Fred E. and Geneva Jennings, Galax, and Bobby and Dawn Jennings, Independence; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Taylor, Elk Creek, and Mozelle Jennings, Galax; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Independence with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings and the Rev. Bobby Dunn officiating. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery in Elk Creek. The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes preceding the service. Aker
Sherrill C. Aker, age 84, of Atkins, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at his son’s home in Saltville.
Mr. Aker was a member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of the Bear Creek Community in Atkins. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation with 35 years of service.
During his illness, Mr. Aker made his home with his son in Saltville where Janice, his daughter-in-law, provided him with special care.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Hess Aker.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Waymon and Janice Aker of Saltville, Avery and Rita Aker of Atkins, and Glenn and Patricia Aker of Goose Creek, S.C.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Frank Bauman, the Rev. Roger Frost and the Rev. Wade Kestner officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
