Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Phillips
Elizabeth Pippin Phillips, age 92, of Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the National Heath Care Center of Bristol.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of North Bristol Baptist Church where she was a member of the Doris Hancock Circle and the Alpha Sunday School Class. She was a retired employee of S&H Green Stamp Store and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.
Mrs. Phillips was the widow of W.J. "Bill" Pippin and Ernest Phillips.
She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Cutshaw of Bristol, Va.; two granddaughters, Rita Owens of Bristol, Va., and Lisa Mann of Bristol, Tenn.; two great-granddaughters, Stephanie and Amanda Hairston; and one great-grandson, D.J. Mann; four sisters, Jodi Sexton of Knoxville, Tenn., Helen Jones of Chilhowie, and Virgie Hicks and Juanita Phillips, both of Bristol, Tenn. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phillips were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at 8 p.m. in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eric Godfrey and Rev. Charlie Taylor officiating. Committal services will be held today, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. in Shelby Hills Cemetery.

Scott
Sandra Jean Baker Scott, age 51, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at University Hospital in Denver after a long illness.
Mrs. Scott was born Jan. 28, 1949 in Bluefield, W.Va., the daughter of William and the late Marguerite Baker. She attended public schools in Princeton, W.Va., and graduated from Chilhowie High School in 1966.
She graduated from Radford College in 1970 where she was a member of the Scottish Highlanders Marching Band and marched in the Macy’s Day Parade and inthe Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, Fla. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Colorado College in 1984. She married Stephen Scott on Aug. 23, 1988.
Her long career as a public school teacher combined a love of music learned from her parents and her grandparents who were both career Salvation Army officers, and teaching exemplified by her father who taught junior and senior high schools and was later a principal and superintendent of schools.
Mrs. Scott taught elementary music in New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Utah, Alaska and Colorado where she taught for 22 years in School District No. 11. In 1987, she was an exchange teacher in Adelaide, South Australia. She was a music education instructor at Colorado College for four years.
Mrs. Scott’s love of music and teaching led to many special projects. Shereceived an NEH fellowship to study folk music in Australia. She was the first Colorado music teacher to study opera for children at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. While teaching at Steele Elementary School, she received the Arts/Business/Education Award for arranging annual field trips to New Mexico where her sixth-grade students performed musicals at Santa Clara Pueblo and Taos Pueblo and studied the culture of the region. Mrs. Scott served as administrative assistant to the Bowed Piano Ensemble of Colorado College directed by her husband when they performed on tour in Europe and the Canary Islands.
Surviving are her husband, Stephen Scott of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her father, William Baker of Princeton, W.Va.; her brother, Roy Baker of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two stepchildren, Benjamin Scott of New York City, and Amy Scott of San Francisco, Calif.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Shove Chapel, Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Salvation Army, 505 S. Weber St., Colorado Springs, Colo. 80903 or the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, 8800 Venice Blvd., Suite 207, Los Angeles, Calif. 90034.

Terry
Eva L. Olinger Terry, age 59, of Chilhowie, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Tony Blevins of Marion; three brothers, James Olinger of Marion, Gene Olinger and Harold Jr. Olinger, both of Saltville; four sisters, Juanita Roe of Sydney, Ohio, Louise Hayden of Saltville, Ruth Frye and Mildred Rosenbaum, both of Marion; special friend, Jake Rowland; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Ballinger
Marie Neal "Rea" Ballinger, age 89, of Bland, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Ballinger was born in Bland County, the daughter of the late Allen J. and Nancy Tibbs Neal. She was past president of the Princeton Moose Lodge and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Mercer County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Lee Ballinger; three brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Bill Kitts, Salem; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Henry Allen Conley officiating. Interment followed in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield.

Henderson
Samuel Hunter Henderson, age 83, of Mouth of Wilson, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at Segraves Nursing Care Center in Jefferson, N.C.
Mr. Henderson was born in Grayson County on March 3, 1917 to Charlie and Daisy Ruth Tucker Henderson. He was an agricultural farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Waive Price Henderson, of the home; one son, Sam Henderson of Grassy Creek, N.C.; two daughters, Nancy Anders of Bermuda Run, N.C., and Jackie Pennington of Independence; one son-in-law, Scott Anders of Bermuda Run, N.C.; six grandchildren, Anthony Joe Anders of Greensboro, N.C., Sterling Anders, Desiree Anders, and Kimberly Pennington, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Heather Griffis of Asheville, N.C., and Jacqueline Pennington of Lexington, N.C.; one great-grandson, Tyler Sage Griffis, Asheville, N.C.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rex Hall and the Rev. Ken Blevins officiating. Burial followed in the Corinth Cemetery in Mouth of Wilson. Memorials may be made to Rugby Rescue Squad and/or Fire Department, 1845 Rugby Road, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363.

Heninger
Fred W. Heninger, age 94, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at the home of his daughter.
Mr. Heninger was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille F. Heninger and two daughters, Phyllis Ann and Linda Sue. He was a retired employee of the Olin Corp.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois Wolfe of Speedwell, and Margaret Breeden of Laurel, Md.; one special son-in-law, Eskel Wolfe; two sons, Danny Heninger and Graham Heninger, both of Saltville; three brothers, Steve Heninger, Abingdon, Bill Heninger and Wiley Heninger, both of Norfolk; one sister, Laura May Dixon of Galax; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Franklin Chapman and the Rev. Bob Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery.

Jackson
Vesta Morris Jackson, age 89, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 in the Evansham Manor.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Lula Ward Morris. She graduated from Max Meadows High School in 1932 and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wesley Jackson; three brothers, Wythe C. Morris, Olen Morris and Earl Morris; and three sisters, Mrs. L.R. (Nellie) Smith, Elsie Gronwoldt, and Finley Nance.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert "Frank" Morris of Salem, and William P. Morris of Max Meadows; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Garland (Ruth) Manuel of Chilhowie, and Mrs. James (Ellen) Surber of Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m. at the West End Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until time of service. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Max Meadows Methodist Church, P.O. Box 246, Max Meadows, VA 24364.

Lyon
Thomas D. (T.D.) Lyon II, age 51, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 at his home in Sugar Grove.
Mr. Lyon had worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde D. and Ola Richardson Lyon; two brothers, Conley Dean Lyon and Larry Leonard Lyon, and a grandson, William Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Irvin Lyon of Marion; one daughter, Inez Morris of Charleston, S.C.; one son, Boyd DeSale Lyon of Marion; two stepsons, Thomas H. Moore of Marion, and Terry Lee Moore of Atkins; two sisters, Patricia Woods of Independence, and Connie Osborne of Atkins; one brother, Dickie Lyon of Sugar Grove; eight grandchildren, Stormy Moore, Charlie Moore, Sarah Moore, Jeremy Morris, Brittany Morris, Chelsea Morris, Thomas DeSale Lyon III, and Austin Lyon; one great-grandson, Logan Moore.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Price and the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Burial will follow in Hutton-Cox Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Pennington
Jim Pennington, age 54, of Damascus, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Pennington was born in Smyth County, the son of the late Arvey Pennington and Katrina Shumate Pennington Hart. He worked for 33 years for Pepperidge Farms in Pennsylvania. He was a member of Reinholds VFW, Reamstown Athletics Associate and St. Anthony’s Lodge, all in Pennsylvania.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen A. DiLuigi Pennington of Reinholds, Penn.; two daughters, Holly Sue Pennington of Millsboro, Del., and Daria Lucia Pennington of Reinholds, Penn.; one son, Joseph Edward Pennington of Reinholds, Penn.; his mother, Katrina Shumate Hart; one sister, Wanda Hayes of Damascus; one brother, Nelson Hart of Damascus; one grandson, Thomas Evans Turnbaugh IV of Millsboro, Del.; previously married to and very special friend, Nancy Gean Hillebrand of Millsboro, Del.; very special friend, Ted Trivett of Damascus; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted Monday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. in the Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock with the Rev. Tim Blevins officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Mount Rogers Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 47, Whitetop, VA 24292.

Rector
Evelyn Collins Rector, age 74, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, John B. Rector of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Bob Bradley Osborne and Mary (Missy) Sowell, both of Saltville, and Mrs. Stuart (Polly) Osborne, Chilhowie; two sons, Tony Rector, Glade Spring, and David Rector, Saltville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rector’s body has been donated to the Anatomical Science Research Division of Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Allison’s Gap with the Rev. Jerry Williams officiating.

Schuck
Esta Schuck, age 98, of Abingdon, formerly of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Schuck was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Schuck.
She is survived by two daughters, Marjorie David, Wolcottville, Ind., and Marilyn Newman, Abingdon; six grandchildren: Fred MacFarland, Carolyn Ovitt and Michael Davis, all of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Randy Newman, Speedwell, Curtis Newman of Grahams Forge, and Eric Newman of Wytheville; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rosewood Cemetery in Rural Retreat. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.
