Helen Rebecca Anderson, age 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Willis Anderson Sr.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Phyllis Sturgill, Arnold, Md., James Willis "Willie" Anderson Jr. and Barbara Ann Anderson, and Will and Stephanie Anderson, all of Marion; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ruby Thomas and Thelma Boothe, both of Marion, Lorrine and Bill Mason, Chilhowie, and Betty and Frank McNew, Fort Howard, Md.; two special friends, James Prater and Michelle Shuler; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Robert Prater and the Rev. Bill Delp officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgedale United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Britton
Ruth Juanita Britton, age 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of Walter B. Britton Sr.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Bob Goodman, Marion; one son, Walter "Bucky" Britton Jr., Port Charlotte, Fla.; five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Charles DeHart officiating. Burial followed at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion.

Greer
Lorene H. Greer, age 73, of Damascus, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Greer was a native of Wise County and had lived in Damascus for many years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elster A. Yates, her second husband, Robert A. Arney, her third husband, Roy C. Ray, and her fourth husband, Shirley O. Greer. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth "Bobby" Arney of Columbus, Ind., and Darrell G. Arney and wife Leanne of Markle, Ind.; three daughters, Robin A. Necessary and husband Tommy, Abingdon, Malissa L. Ward and husband Chuck, and Barbara L. Norris and husband Bobby, all of Damascus; two sisters, Kitty Sluss, St. Paul, and Shirly Greear, Damascus; two brothers, Harless Hall, Coeburn, and Garney Hall, Bull Hill; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Temple Hill Mausoleum Chapel in Castlewood with the Rev. George Salyers and the Rev. Charles Ward officiating.

Ray Albert Hanks, age 75, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Hanks was preceded in death by his wife, Jossie May Hanks.
Surviving are five sisters, Virginia Cress Moore, Marion, Mae Huff, Mary Hanks, Goldie Hanks and Clair Frazier; six brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Alma Hanks, James Hanks, Thomas Hanks, Charles Hanks, Ebb Manuel and Charles Manuel; several nieces and nephews including a special niece Shirley Hutton, Marion; a special nurse, David Greer, Chilhowie.
Graveside services will be held today, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at Round Hill Cemetery in Marion with the Rev. Herman Cress officiating.

Jerald Lee (Jerry) Hart, age 55, of Seven Mile Ford, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Hart was born in Ashe County, N.C., and was retired from the Virginia Mental Health Institute. He was preceded in death by his father, Vaughn Lester Hart; a brother, Jim Hart; his stepfather, Edgar B. Matheson; and two infant daughters, Kimberly Dawn Hart and Monica Rosena Hart.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Ann Carrico Hart; one daughter and son-in-law, Tina Michelle Hart and Timothy Allen Stamper, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Vaughn and Misty Dawn Campbell Hart, Marion; his mother, Reba Hart Matheson, Marion; one sister, Susie Regan, Hewitt, Texas; one brother, Bill Hart, Lenoir, N.C.; one grandson, Justin Trent Debord; one granddaughter, Shantay Autumn Stamper; his father-in-law, Charles H. Carrico.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. in Bradley-Finney Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Gary Blackwell, the Rev. Kenneth Barnes, and the Rev. Frank Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Middlefork Cemetery.

Hash
Mary Testerman Hash, age 84, of Atkins, formerly of the Laurel Hill Community of Rugby, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Hash was born Feb. 3, 1917 at Troutdale, the daughter of the late Cicero and Bertie Ball Testerman. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie Reedy and Jessie Chatham.
Surviving are two sisters, Stella Finley, Atkins, and Ella Echols, Marion; one brother, Boyd Testerman, Atkins; 15 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Sept. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rex Hall, the Rev. Fred E. Jennings and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Rugby. The family will be at the residence, 416 Stone Drive, Atkins, where friends may call at any time.

Henegar
Lloyd Turner Henegar, age 75, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
Mr. Henegar was retired from Olin Chemical Corporation and Tazewell County School system. He was a member of McCready United Methodist Church and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine "Teenie" Henegar.
Surviving are one son, Charles T. "Foz" and Marsha A. Henegar, Carrollton; one daughter, Mrs. Andy (Jane) Barrett, Bristol; two granddaughters, Tatum and Julie Barrett; very special friend, Betty Russell, Marion; one nephew, Gerald Kelly; two nieces, Norma Fisher and Nancy Pless; one godson, Christopher Dawson.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at the McCready United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Roe and Dr. Dwight Kilbourne officiating. Interment will be at the Elizabeth Cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the McCready United Methodist Church.

McCarter
Grover Lee McCarter, age 91, of Spotsylvania County, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. McCarter was born in Sugar Grove. He was retired from Venice Maid in New Jersey. He was an ordained Baptist minister and had served as a pastor in Millville, N.J. He loved the mountains and was an avid hunter and fisherman in his youth.
Surviving are his wife, Georgia Campbell McCarter; one daughter; two sons; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private.

Smith
Milton L. Smith, age 86, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 at his home in Saltville.
Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Saltville Rescue Squad and Fire Department. He had been a mason with the Glade Spring Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.
Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Thomas Smith; three sons, Milton Lee Smith, Jim L. Smith and wife Sheila, all of Kingsport, Tenn., and Norman B. Smith, Bristol, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Alton W. (Sidra) Wolfe, Mrs. Marvin G. (Karen) Little, both of Kingsport, Tenn.; one sister, Kathleen Duke, Springfield, Tenn.; seven grandchildren: Todd Little, Jason L. Smith, Brandon Wolfe, Jennifer Wolfe, Greg Smith, Audrey Smith and Laura Smith; one great-grandchild, Preston L. Smith; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kyle French officiating. Interment will follow at the Glade Spring Presbyterian Cemetery with the Glade Spring Masonic Lodge conducting Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Strickland
Phyllis Braund Kelly Strickland, age 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Mrs. Strickland was born in Miami, and raised in Raleigh, N.C. She graduated from St. Mary's Junior College and received a BA degree in Music from Meredith College. Later in life she returned to school and received a masters degree in organ from Radford University. She was also a certified Orff-Shulvert Specialist, a special method of teaching music to young children.
She was active in churches and was organist at First Baptist Church in Martinsville, the Kenbridge (Virginia) Methodist Church, and for many years was the organist at First United Methodist Church in Marion.
Surviving are her husband, Ed Strickland, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Annette Strickland, Roanoke, and Thomas and Judy Strickland, Rocky Face, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Chris Melkus, Ashburn; eight grandchildren: Andrew, Lauren, Gary, Sarah, Hunter, Lilly, Maggie and Carly; one niece, Carol Barefoot; three nephews, of Raleigh, N.C.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Marion with the Rev. Buddy Miller and the Rev. Mary K. Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Library Fund, 115 South Church St., Marion, VA 24354. The body will be taken to the church one hour before services.

West
Arthur Woodrow West, age 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at his home in Rural Retreat.
Mr. West was born in Nicholas County, W.Va., the son of the late George Arthur and Katie Shaver West. He was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, was a retired Wythe County contractor, and had been active in Rural Retreat community affairs.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Cecile Ceary West; one daughter and husband, Gail and Jim Hall, Rural Retreat; two sons and spouses, Joe and Diane West, and Allan and Kathy West, all of Rural Retreat; one brother, Opie West, Hampstead, Md.; two sisters, Nina Comstock, Winchester, and Irene Schumann, Wilmington, Del.; one half-sister, Mildred Woods, Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Rural Retreat Community Center, the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, or to the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.

Wilson
Bertha Wilson, age 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at her home in Glade Spring.
Mrs. Wilson was a lifelong resident of Washington County and had worked at Lincoln Furniture Company. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Bert" Wilson, and a daughter, Willie Faye Pinkston.
Surviving are three daughters, Virgie Sweesy and Frances Stewart, both of Glade Spring, and Dorothy Cason, Duluth, Ga.; three sons, Donald L. Wilson, Mountain City, Tenn., Howard E. Wilson, Chilhowie, and John Wilson, Glade Spring; one brother, Oscar Graham Doss, Sophia, W.Va.; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. in the Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Boyer and the Rev. Warren Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery.
