Pickle
Gertrude Day Pickle, age 95, of Glade Spring, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Pickle was a native of western North Carolina but lived most of her life in Marion. She later moved to Glade Spring to live with her daughter, Frances Lester.
She worked as a sewing instructor for more than 30 years at Harwood Manufacturing in Marion and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Pickle, a town of Marion policeman; one daughter, Loretta Kilby; three infant sons; and two brothers, Bill Day of Marion, and Claude Day of North Carolina.
Surviving are two daughters, Charlotte Gentry, Marion, and Frances Lester, Glade Spring; one sister, Vera Wallace, Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Brenda Cress, Keith Kilby, David Gentry and Phyllis Doss, all of Marion, Danny Kilby of Chilhowie, Jeff Lester of Wise, and Michael Lester of Gray, Tenn.; one step-granddaughter, Mary Lee Davenport of Glade Spring; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Mrs. Deena Yates McAfee and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Washington Springs United Methodist Church, 36570 Plum Creek Rd., Glade Spring, VA 24340.

Sturgill
Leslie Arlen Sturgill, age 58, of Saltville, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Sturgill was preceded in death by his father, Richard O. Sturgill.
Surviving are his mother, Mary Ellen Sturgill, Bristol, Tenn.; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas and Teresa Harmon, North Carolina, Norman Guinn, Bristol, Tenn., Avery Cardwell, and Wayne Cardwell, both of Saltville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Sue Sturgill, Marion and Jack and Juanita Sturgill, Bristol; one sister, Mrs. Larry (Julie) Balthis, Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many special friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Teigue
Leslie Arlen Sturgill, age 58, of Saltville, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001 from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.
She was a senior at Marion Senior High School.
Surviving are her parents, Richard and Diane Teigue, Marion; her mother, Vicky Teigue, Ft. Knox, Texas; her grandparents, Doris Burgermeyer, Warren, Ohio, Irene Teigue, McConnells, S.C., and Kenneth and Irmgard Davis, Tooele, Vt.; brothers and sisters, Jennifer and husband Joe Schlechte, Alaska, Richard Teigue, Ft. Benning, Ga., Christopher Teigue and Kenny Teigue, both of Marion; her niece, Claire Schlechte.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Cemetery.

Walls
Mitchell Fieldon Walls, age 78, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 in Lorien Nursing Home, Belcamp, Md.
Mr. Walls was born May 5, 1923 in Marion. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both in Aberdeen, Md.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Margie Blevins Walls of Aberdeen, Md.; one son, Ricky Walls, Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Carolyn Walls, Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepsons, Larry C. Brinegar, Perryville, Md., and Charles R. Brinegar, Delta, Penn.; two sisters, Geraldine Blevins, Roanoke, and Zola Hood, Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Jessica E. Brinegar, Towson, Md., Damien Brinegar, and Meghan Brinegar, both of Bel Air, Md.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. at Whitetop Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. T.A. Pennington officiating.

Anderson
David V. Anderson Sr., age 77, of Troutdale, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 at Asbury Center in Wytheville.
Surviving are his wife, Annice Coalson Anderson, Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, David V. Jr. and Brenda Anderson, Rural Retreat; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Hampton, Galax, Wanda and Lee McKinnon, Bluefield, Annette and Donnie Louthen, Cedar Springs, and Mona Taylor, Speedwell; two brothers, Charles Anderson, Groseclose, and Stephen Anderson, Troutdale; two sisters and brother-in-law, Maxine and Ed Bullins, Teas, and Ruth Silver, Chilhowie; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence with burial in Anderson Hill Cemetery in Troutdale. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the home of the son and daughter-in-law, David V. Jr. and Brenda Anderson in Rural Retreat at any time.

Carter
Ruth Carter, age 79, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 at her home in Hemet, Calif.
Mrs. Carter was born in Konnarock and lived and worked in Marion before moving to California. She was a homemaker the last years of her life.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Howard Carter; one daughter, Yvonne Medley of North Carolina; two sons, Ben Carter, Oregon, and Dan Carter, California; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Avery Severt and Howard Severt, both of North Carolina; four sisters, Pearl Kirby of Ohio, Mary Blevins, Edith Gordon and Blanch Caruso, all of Virginia.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 11, in California with the Rev. Hull of the Nazarene Church officiating. Interment was at Riverside National Cemetery in California.
Hall
Claude French Hall, age 87, of Meadowview, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Hall of Bel Air, Md.; one daughter, Loretta Hensley, Meadowview; two sons, Chuck Hall, Port Orchard, Wash., and Raymond Hall, Olalla, Wash.; one brother, John Henry Hall of Sugar Grove; two sisters, Hazel Rich, Sugar Grove, and Ethel Richerson, Bowie, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Monday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at Slemp Creek Cemetery in Sugar Grove with the Rev. Herbert Bailey officiating.

Hardy
Bonnie Kelly Hardy, age 80, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 in Glen Burnie, Md.
Mrs. Hardy was born Aug. 5, 1921 at McCready, the daughter of the late William and Clara Gilbert Kelly. She was retired after 32 years from the Social Security Department in Baltimore, Md.
Mrs. Hardy was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hardy; and two sisters, Mildred Johnson and Mable Emerson.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Harold Jr. and Nadja Hardy, Glen Burnie, Md.; two grandsons, David and Ryan Hardy, both of Glen Burnie, Md.; one sister, Helen Ward, Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Committal services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, at Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville.

Norwood
Amy Evelyn Norwood, age 103, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
She was the widow of J. Hugh Norwood.
Surviving are one son-in-law, Philip Smythe, Shillington, Penn.; one grandson and wife, Michael and Elizabeth Smythe, Marion; one granddaughter and husband, Patricia and Robert Nase, Reading, Penn.; two great-grandchildren, Susan and Philip Nase, Reading, Penn.

Seward
Van D. Seward died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 in Annapolis, Md. She was a long-time resident of Marion.
Mrs. Seward was a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church in Marion where she served on the Alter Guild. She was also a member of the Royal Oak Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are her loving husband of 53 years, Charles B. Seward; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sally Van and Gary Duckworth, Annapolis, Md., Marie and Chip Azzara, Lincoln University, Penn., and Dorothye and Chuck Brodersen, Richmond; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Grace Killinger, Houston, Texas; one brother, Edward L. Davis, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Michael Zumpf officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday, Sept. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Howard J. "Jimmy" Stratton, age 67, of Marion, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Howard and Lela Shupe Stratton, and a brother Buford Stratton.
Surviving are one sister, Lee Anna Stratton, Marion; three aunts, Sarah Gowins, Pearl Shupe, both of Marion, and Laura Sexton, Rising Sun, Md.; special friend, Roy Snider, Marion; several cousins, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 p.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Lundy and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Geneva D. Turley, age 45, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at her home in Marion.
