Barnett
Russell Thomas "Tommy" Barnett, age 63, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 at his home in Pulaski.
Mr. Barnett was born Feb. 17, 1938 in West Virginia, the son of the late Hugh Cage Barnett and Elizabeth Lindemood Barnett Wolfe. He had over 20 years of service at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Winesett Barnett.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark Thomas Barnett and wife Sherry of Dublin; one brother, Tony Darrell Barnett of Forrest; one sister, Barbara Montgomery of Slidell, La.; one granddaughter, Alicia Nichole Barnett of Dublin.
Graveside services were held Friday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Round Hill Cemetery in Marion with the Rev. Terrie L. Sternberg and the Rev. Steven Ridenhour officiating. Bowman
Malissa O. Bowman, age 96, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Ms. Bowman was born in Smyth County on July 3, 1905 to the late James Arthur and Lou Fowler Bowman. She was an elementary school teacher in the Smyth County School system for more than 50 years after receiving a degree in Elementary Education from Radford College.
Surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Hattie "Jo" Sprinkle, Lucy and Dr. Wyndham Blanton, all of Richmond, and Alice and Robert Moseley, Clayton, Ga.; one brother, John S. Bowman, Chilhowie; 12 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Wesley Eller and the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to either Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church or the newly reorganized Chilhowie Rescue Squad.

Heldreth
John Harvey Heldreth, age 76, of Hendersonville, Tenn., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001 in the St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Mr. Heldreth was born in Rural Retreat, the son of the late Harve Herbert and Emma Ward Heldreth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Loraine Heldreth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrye and Richard O'Leary, Hendersonville, Tenn., and Dianne and Geary Jonas, Rural Retreat; one granddaughter and spouse, Kelley and Lance Short; one great-grandchild, Emilie Short; a step-great-grandchild, P.J. O'Leary; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kevin Fiorini officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Norris
Alice Elizabeth Fritz Norris, age 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 at Russell County Medical Center.
Born in Taylor's Valley in 1916, she was the daughter of the late Jess A. Fritz and Hollie Gentry Fritz. She graduated from Damascus High School in 1932. After graduation, she moved to Washington D.C. and worked at Belvedere Hospital until she got married in 1939. Her family returned to Damascus in 1951 where she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus, serving as Sunday School treasurer and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
The family moved to Lebanon in 1958 where Mrs. Norris was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church and served the church on the finance committee and pulpit committee. She served as a primary Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and Women's No. 4 Sunday School Class secretary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Norval F. Norris; a son, William F. Norris; and four brothers, Roy Fritz, Walter Fritz, Alfred Fritz, and Grover Fritz.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Norris-Bryant and Rayford Bryant, Lebanon; three step-grandchildren, Jason Mansley, Lynn Mansley and Carl Mansley, Ellisville, Miss.; one daughter-in-law, Becky B. Norris, Amherst; one sister and brother-in-law, Callie Baer and Harrison Baer, Arlington; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Fritz, Damascus, and Marjorie Fritz, Camp Hill, Penn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. in Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Edwards and the Rev. James Belcher officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lebanon Baptist Church or to the Russell County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Barger
Lois W. Barger, age 93, formerly of Ceres, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Barger was born in Bland County on Nov. 30, 1907, the daughter of the late Dunn B. and Minnie Lee Fry Waddle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Barger; one grandson, Robert Michael Crabtree; a brother, Vance Waddle; and a daughter-in-law, Charleene S. Barger.
She was a homemaker and a member of Red Oak Lutheran Church and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are one son, Paul L. Barger, Ceres; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna "Butchie" and Roddy Crabtree, Marion; sister, Hazel W. Davis, Bland; granddaughter, Brenda and C. Faulkner, Bland; grandson, Laymond and Debbie Barger, Ceres; great-grandchildren, Hunter Barger, Cole Faulkner and Jordan Faulkner; several nieces and nephews; extended family and friends at Ridgefield Retirement Home in Chilhowie, and Skill Care Unit at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at Red Oak Union Church in Ceres with Pastor Murray Ziegenfuss and Pastor Eugene Copenhaver officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m.

Buskell
Daniel Elwood Buskell, age 59, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at the home of his uncle in Sugar Grove.
Mr. Buskell was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Edward and Zenna Harrington Buskell.
Surviving are one uncle, Donald Harrington and wife Ruth of Sugar Grove; two aunts, Eddith Harrington, Chilhowie, and Enola Harrington, Bel Air, Md.; several cousins; special friends, Buddy and Polly Haga, Marion.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Harry Leland officiating. Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Gilbert
Edith N. Gilbert, age 82, of Atkins, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Brown, and a son-in-law, Hubert Widener.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Albert M. Gilbert; four sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Lettie Gilbert, Atkins, Bud and Phyllis Gilbert, North Carolina, James E. and Loretta Gilbert, Marion, and Donald and Anita Gilbert, Florida; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Widener, Atkins, Lorrine and Jay Alexander, Maryland, Jean and Boyd Crouse, North Carolina, Patsy and Richard Johnson, Florida; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jessie Williams, Clyde Williams, and Richard Williams, West Virginia; two sisters, Ruth Inscore and Irene Johnson, both of Pennsylvania.

Ina Fox Gullion, age 98, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001 in Francis Marion Manor.
Mrs. Gullion was born to the late D.M. and Huldia Blevins. She was a member of the Christian Unity Baptist Church in Marion and had worked at Franks Restaurant in Marion.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lee Fox.
Surviving are one daughter, Lessie Fox Heffinger, Atkins; one son, Ford Fox, Middle Town, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; many great-great, and great-great-great-grandchildren; two half sisters, Sarah Jane Blevins and Thelma Stamper, both of Chilhowie; one half brother, Chalmer Blevins, Dublin.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Blevins and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mary Irene Gentry Owens, age 75, of Seven Mile Ford, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Owens was born in Washington County to the late John "J.B." and Lydia Richardson Gentry. She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Jack Owens.
Surviving are her husband, John Howard Owens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Barbara Owens, Shelby Owens, all of Chilhowie, Ronald and Carolyn Owens, Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannie and Woodie Powers, Chilhowie, Patricia and R.T. Surber, Saltville, and Sharon Stevenson, Seven Mile Ford; seven grandchildren: Russell Powers and wife Kelly, Dustin Powers, Jason Surber, Chad Stevenson, Lisa Stepp and husband Barry, Kristy Owens and Stephanie Owens; three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Mackenzie and Emma; one brother, B.C. Gentry, Seven Mile Ford; two sisters, Rosalie Arnold, Saltville, and Doris Roe, Sidney, Ohio; many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held tonight, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. at Bradley-Finney Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. Carl Young officiating. Graveside services will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. at St. James Church Cemetery in Chilhowie. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral chapel.

Hayes
Alice M. Hayes of Damascus died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Hayes was a native of Konnarock, and had lived in Whitetop before moving to Unionville, Penn., in 1956. She moved back to Damascus in 1974.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Konnarock and was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Wingler; and two daughters, Bellvie Winger and Marie Wingler.
Surviving are her husband, Gene F. Hayes; two daughters, Peggy Baldwin of Whitetop, and Eva Roop of Glade Spring; three sons, Frank Wingler and Raymond Junior Wingler, both of Damascus, and Gerald Johnson, Coatesville, Penn.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Pastor Garland Day, Mr. Donnie Nickalow, and Mr. Johnny Ray Finley, ministers, officiating. Burial followed in the Arthur Wingler Family Cemetery in Whitetop. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Red Cross, 901 Commonwealth Avenue, Bristol, VA 24201.

Elizabeth Carolyn "Sue" Kirk Michel, age 59, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001in Morgan City, La.
She was preceded in death by her father, Sherman Kirk, and a brother, Lewis Kirk.
Surviving are her husband, Sidney Michel Jr., Morgan City, La.; four daughters, Lynnette Michel Flick and Becky Michel, both of Morgan City, La., JoAnn Legano of Houme, La., and Monique Michel of Iota, La.; one son, Sidney John Michel III, Morgan City, La.; her mother, Mae Nelson Kirk, Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Betty Kirk, Jefferson, N.C.; two grandchildren, Macy Legano and Brennan Flick.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at Valley View Baptist Church in Sugar Grove with the Rev. Roger Frost officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirk Family Cemetery in Sugar Grove. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church.
