Howell
Elva N. Howell, age 93, of Salem, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Howell; her parents, Thomas J. and Anna Neff; and three brothers, Jim, Pete and Arthur Neff.
Surviving are one sister, Emma Lee Cregger of Salem; one sister-in-law, Sarah Neff of Salem; two nieces, Shirley N. Reed of Roanoke and Sue Gray of Vinton; and one nephew, Jack Neff of Gaffney, S.C.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Sam E. McPhail officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 4329 Lee Highway, Marion, Va. 24354.

Palmer
Bobby Lee "Bubba" Palmer, age 54, died on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Roanoke.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War where he received two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the Saltville V.F.W. "Hardy Roberts" Post #7382, a life-member of the D.A.V. and a life-member of the Virginia Bear Hunters Association.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Osborne Palmer; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Lee and Jeff Wyatt of Tannersville; parents, Jake and Oakie Palmer of Marion; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Sharon Palmer, Dan and Tina Palmer and J.D. and Debbie Palmer, all of Marion; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Eddie Rickman of Saltville and Sally and Curtis Surber of Marion; one granddaughter, Alyda Jade Wyatt; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer and Jim Swartz, Kitty and Desale Lyons, Kevin Hamn, Kristina Palmer and Tommy and Austin Lyons.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Mumpower officiating. Burial will follow at the Osborne Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Saltville V.F.W. Post #7328.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Henderson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tannersville Rescue Squad or the Osborne Family Cemetery Fund, c/o/ Nancy Frye, 2393 Veterans Road, Tannersville, Va. 24377.

Peeples
Edna Mae Hall Peeples, age 65, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late William Sylvester and Zellar M. Crigger Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence H. "Buster" Peeples; two brothers, James. W. Hall and Ted Hall; and two sisters, Anna Laura Blizzard and Cara Lee Moxley.
She is survived by three daughters, Sherry Lynn Thompson of Chilhowie, Lyndia Diane Reynolds of Abingdon and Pamela Rene Frye of Jonesborough, Tenn.; four sons, Kenneth Gregory Peeples and David Wayne Peeples, both of Rural Retreat, John Howard Peeples of Wytheville and Brian Dale Peeples of Marion; one sister, Helen Perkins of Atkins; two brothers, William Hall of Maryland and Woodrow W. Hall of Fairfax; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family received friends on Friday evening, Jan. 4, at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Sheppard
Margaret Pauline Anderson Sheppard, age 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Mrs. Sheppard was born in Grayson County to the late Cleveland and Lilia Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Sheppard. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Marion.
She is survived by one son, Roger Lee Sheppard, Marion.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Marion with Pastor Gary Trout officiating. Interment was Friday, Jan. 4, in the Roselawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Calvary Missions Fund c/o Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 7, Marion, VA 24354.

Teaster
Walter Neal Teaster, age 71, of Middletown, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2002, in the Middletown Regional Hospital.
A native of Marion, he was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked in the transportation department of Armco Steel Company for 38 years before his retirement in 1989. He attended Bible Methodist Church in Middletown, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Minnie (Barr) Teaster; sister, Ruth Fox; and brothers, Elmer (Doc), Frank, Harold and Roy Teaster.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Rosalie Teaster; one son and daughter-in-law, Neal D. and Alicia Teaster of Wichita Falls, Texas; one daughter, Rhonda L. Frezza of Trenton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Patricia Ann Teaster and Melissa, Benjamin and Jessica Taggart; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn and Lucille Teaster, Gene and Quita Teaster, Pete and Joyce Teaster, and Herbert and Marian Teaster, all of Marion; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mattie and James Blevins of Marion and Betty and Simon King of Rural Retreat; brother-in-law, Henry Fox; and two step-daughters, Judy Benge of Gratis, Ohio, and Joyce Fitswater of Middletown, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 3, at Baker-Stevens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Sankey officiating. Interment was at Fairmound Cemetery in West Elkton, Ohio.

Weaver
Dorothy Grace Johnson Weaver, age 78, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was born the middle child of eleven children in Saltville in 1923.
Dorothy accomplished many things and had various interests during her life. She graduated as an R.N. from Johnston Memorial Nursing School in Abingdon in 1946. She began her career at Lee Memorial Hospital in Marion. She assisted in the opening of Smyth County Community Hospital. After more than 25 years of service, she retired as night supervisor in 1988. In addition to raising seven children and fulfilling a nursing career, Dorothy always had a kind heart and a helping hand for anyone in need. She loved the beach, and enjoyed fishing, boating and any activity with her family. Also an avid gardener, she grew everything from beans to violets.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Ernest Weaver and her parents, Floyd and Maude Johnson.
She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Jackie Weaver of Southlake, Texas, Cecil E. Weaver II and wife Betty of Salem, Davis R. Weaver of Orlando, Fla., William O. Weaver and wife, Barbara, and Thomas L. Weaver and wife, Jean all of Marion; two daughters, Mary L. Weaver of Knoxville, Tenn. and Dorothy J. "Cissy" Weaver and boyfriend, Chevy, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Beth, Eric, Brooks, Ben, Aaron, Luke, Matt, and Jennifer; one great-granddaughter, Ashlynn; a very special sister, Helen J. Johnson of Saltville; a loving brother, C. Herbert Johnson and his wife Regina of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; a special sister-in-law, Vergie Marie Sutter of Shreveport, La., and numerous special nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Sever-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Charles DeHart and Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Wood
Phyllis Bussard Wood, age 80, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing facility.
She was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Jenny Brown Bussard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Wood and a daughter, Jean Wood Davis.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda S. Wood of Orlando, Fla., and Cheryl W. and Terry Crawford of Piney Flats, Tenn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry C. and Judy Wood of Wytheville, James V. Wood of Wytheville, and Stanley "Jerry" and Kay Wood of Marion; a sister, Virginia B. Myers of Hagerstown, Md.; three brothers, John Bussard, Roscoe Bussard, both of Hagerstown, Md.; and Jim Bussard of Funkstown, Md.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was Thursday, Jan. 3, at 1 p.m. in the West End Cemetery.

Bartley
Bascom Slemp Bartley, age 93, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Anderson Bartley and Octavia Cochran Bartley; three half-brothers, Noah Bartley, Adam H. Bartley and W. Lawrence Bartley; three brothers, Arnold J. Bartley, Millard Guy Bartley and Claude Irvin Bartley.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary Katherine Aker Bartley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin Anderson Bartley and Kathryn of Joelton,Tenn. and Frank Onyx Bartley and Joan of Moneta; three grandchildren and their spouses, Richard Irvin Bartley and Debbie of Catawba, Lisa Bartley Sutherland and Wade of Roanoke, and Sandra Lynn Richardson and Mark of Joelton,Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Rebeka Buttrey, Jacob Sutherland and Matthew Sutherland; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 11a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Armand Jalbert officiating. Burial was at the Riverside Cemetery .

Buchanan
Agnes G. Wilson Buchanan, age 84, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Valley Health Care Center.
She was a member of the New Cove Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Wilson; her second husband, Samuel "Bud" Buchanan; and son, Jeff Buchanan.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine Wilson Buchanan and husband, Gene, Rich Valley; Jean Wilson Gray and husband, Robert, Glen Allen; and Fonnie and Jim Holmes, Roanoke; one step-son, Larry Buchanan, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one step-daughter, Gipsie Harrison, Sterling; one brother, Roy Gillespie, Marion; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-children; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; five nephews; and one niece.
Funeral services were held Wed. Jan. 2, 2002 at Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Skeeter Yeatts officiating. Burial followed at the Ridgedale Cemetery.

Campbell
Louise W. Campbell, age 83, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Washington County to the late George and Mary Amelia Jane Hawthorne Warren and was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Henry Campbell, and by a daughter, Arlene Campbell and a brother, Howard Warren.
Survivors include four daughters and a son-in-law; Betty Edmisten, Ann Martin, Wanda and Jim Owens, all of Marion, and Becky Campbell of Groseclose; one son and daughter-in-law; Bob and Betty Campbell, Marion; eight grandchildren; Joe Campbell, Rob Campbell, Eric Martin, Kevin Martin, Teresa Baines, Kelly Parnell, Misty Hart, Jennifer Owens; six great-grandchildren; Jessica Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Brian Martin, Matthew Martin, Steven Baines, Cody Campbell; special caregivers; Teresa Baines, Judy Wain, Pam Cregger; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 6, from the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Neville Mozingo and Gene Osborne officiating. Interment will follow in the old Glade Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave; Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Cuddy
Ethel Beatrice Rose Cuddy, age 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Russell County and lived most of her life in Bristol. She was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church and worked for Monroe Calculating for 23 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Lee Rose, and her husband, Edward L. Cuddy.
She is survived by one son, Roger Cuddy and wife, Janice, of Bristol; one daughter, Jane Cuddy of Bristol; her mother, Mary Jane Hubbard Rose of Marion; two sisters, Trula Weaver of Bristol and Elinor Richards of Blountville; and nephews, Alan Weaver of Telluride, Colo., and Mark Weaver of Florida.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tony Collins officiating.
Farris Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
