Walker
David Scott Walker, age 33 of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
David was employed by W. L. Construction, Inc. He was loved by all who knew him and was a great inspiration to the community.
He is survived by his wife and sole mate, Missy Prater Walker of Chilhowie, and his two "little boys" (his dogs), Chester and Max; his father, D.C. Walker and his mother, Judy Walker, both of Chilhowie; one brother, Daniel Walker and wife Kim of Chilhowie; nieces and nephew, Fallon, Will and Lindsey Walker; a very special mentor and friend, Brenda Lewis; a brotherly friend, Travis Lewis; mother and father-in-law, Billy and Shelby Prater of Saltville; a beloved little friend, Kayla Prater; brother-in-law, Bill (Huck) Prater and wife Beth of Saltville; grandmothers, Ann N. Rupard of Chilhowie, and Kathleen Prater of Saltville; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 24, at 8 p.m. at Chilhowie Christian Church with Pastor Bob McCormick, Pastor Bobby Dunn and Pastor Frank Branson officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, Jan 25, in the West Wood Memorial Gardens.

Wolfe
Zelma Rose Bard Wolfe, age 86, of Hartwell, Ga., formerly of Athens, Ga. and Marion, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Hart Care Center.
Born in Wagoner, Ashe Co., N.C., she was the daughter of the late George W. Bard and Ella Mae Parsons Bard. She was a retired nursing assistant from Smyth County Community Hospital, a homemaker and a member of the Laurel Springs United Methodist Church in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil William "Bill" Wolfe, Jr.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy Wolfe and Bill Payne of Hartwell Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, James C. "Jim" Wolfe and Gail of Roanoke; a sister, Mae B. France of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, George Carl Bard of Taylorsville, N.C.; four grandchildren, William D Payne and wife Karen of Atlanta, Ga.; Robin P. Pippin and husband Richard of Hartwell, Ga.; James Wolfe III of Roanoke; and Suzanne G. Wolfe of Chatsworth, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, William R. "Beau" Payne, Alison L. Pippin and Lauren M. Payne.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Laurel Springs United Methodist Church, Marion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Laurel Springs United Methodist Church, Laurel Springs Rd., Marion, Va. 24354.

Armstrong
Linda Henderson Armstrong, age 41, of Saltville, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Marion.
She is survived by her husband Jessie G. Armstrong, Saltville; one daughter, Jessica Darlene Armstrong, Saltville; one son, Joshua David Armstrong, Marion; her parents, Lucy Henderson, Groseclose, and Harold Henderson, Marion; one brother, Bobby Joe Henderson, Groseclose; one sister, Darlene Hamm, Atkins; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at The Ridgedale Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Harris officiating.
Ausmus
Beulah Coomer Ausmus, age 84, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She lived most of her life in Lee County and attended the Woodway Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Ransom Ausmus; one daughter, Judy Ausmus Sturgill; step-mother, Cassie Adams; one grandson, Danny Joe Ausmus; and aunt and uncle, Bige and Gracie Hoskins.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Danny L. and Glenellen Ausmus, Anderson, Ind., David R. and Darlene Ausmus, Bristol, Va., and Johnny W. Ausmus, Abingdon; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Coy Fee of Anderson; one sister, Ruby Collinsworth, Knoxville; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, from Sturgill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bradley Ray Yeary officiating. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery at Woodway, Va.
Barrett
Charlie James Barrett, age 57, of Saltville, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was an U.S. Army veteran, serving eight years in Germany and Vietnam, and also served 13 years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Keith Barrett; one daughter, Belinda D. Barrett, Marion; sisters, Phyllis Barrett, Betty Sue Barrett and Teresa Barrett, all of Saltville; brothers, Roscoe D. Barrett, Saltville, Herman Edgar Barrett, Norfolk, Gene Raymond Barrett, Saltville, and Roy Wayne Barrett, Meadowview; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in the Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Surber and the Rev. Shirley Carter officiating. Burial followed in the Elizabeth Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Saltville V.F.W. Post 7328.

Bedwell
William "Bill" Hobert Bedwell, Jr., age 73, of Chilhowie, died Saturday Jan. 26, 2002 in the Welmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.
Bedwell was born in North Fork, W.Va. to the late William Hobert Bedwell, Sr. and Stella Pearman Bedwell.
He moved to Galax in 1939 and to Smyth County in 1970 where he retired from Harwood Manufacturing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy and attended Georgia Tech University. He was a member of of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667, and the Mt. View United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lillie Pearl Bedwell; four children and a daughter-in-law; William Michael Bedwell of Pulaski, Lisa Karen Bedwell of Atkins, John Elliot and Crystal Fisher Bedwell of Ft. Chiswell, Carol Ann Bedwell of the home; four grandchildren, Andy Hale of Glade Spring, Ryan Bedwell of Speedwell, Wesley Walters of Atkins, and Lauren Elizabeth Bedwell of Ft. Chiswell; two great-grandchildren, Jaden Hale, Jared Hale; one sister, Patricia Newman of Holden Beach, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday Jan. 29, 2002, at the Mt. View United Methodist Church with Rev. John Graham and Rev. Catherine Deese officiating. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Thomas
Robert Samuel Thomas, age 72, of Saltville, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was a former employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Robbins and a brother, Garland Thomas.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Thomas of Saltville; one son, Nelson Thomas, Saltville; five brothers, William Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Elmer Thomas, Glen Thomas and Joe Thomas, all of Saltville; two sisters, Mary Woods and Callie Anderson, Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Benny Frye officiating. Graveside services were conducted on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Elizabeth Cemetery, Saltville.
The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home will be serving the family.
Ward
James Ray Ward, age 72, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late James Wesley Ward and Roamie Haley Ward. He was a retired employee of General Motors Corp. and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Con L. Ward and Billy Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Lee Ward; two sons, Shawne Ward, Bristol, Tenn., and James Wesley Ward, York, Pa.; eight daughters and sons-in-law, Brook Ward of the home, Brenda and Bill Twigg, Westminster, Md., Glenda and Ed Keller, Columbus, Ga., Renee and Randy Lyles, Saltville, Olander Ward, Aberdeen, Md., Valerie Goldberg, Baltimore, Theola and Rodney Weaver, Glade Spring, and Ellen and Leroy Farmer, Blountville; five sisters, Margaret Schaffer, Olenton, Md., Lisa Ledbetter, Atlanta, Mary Frances Schepers, Petersburg, Elizabeth Dillard, Bristol, Va., and Mildred Hamby, Bristol, Tenn.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and many special family members and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Farris Funeral Chapel. Cremation followed the service.

Blevins
Charles Monroe "Fields" Blevins Jr., age 71, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was an U.S. Army veteran, a life member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post #4667 and a lifelong member of Cleghorn Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Gae Blevins; his father and mother, Charles M. Blevins Sr. and Caroline Brooks Blevins; and a brother, Their Blevins.
He is survived by his wife, Gae B. Blevins; one daughter, Anita Mae Blevins, Chilhowie; two brothers, Paul C. Blevins, Creston, Ohio, and George W. Blevins, Chilhowie; three sisters, Stella B. Severt, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Thelma B Eblen, Salem, Va., and Josephine B. Crouse, Marion; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Jewel Haga Blevins, Richmond; mother-in-law, Bessie Mae Rose Blevins; brother- and sister-in-law, Douglas M. and Lavada Blevins; and sister-in-law, Juanita Chapman Blevins, all of Chilhowie.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 31, 2002, at 8 p.m. in Cleghorn Baptist Church with the Revs. Wesley G. Eller, Charles E. Blevins, Rick Blevins and Roger D. Blevins officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 1, in Cleghorn Cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Francis Marion V.F.W. Post #4667.

Blevins
Virginia S. Blevins, age 78 of Marion, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Blevins was born in Smyth County to the late Holland Dewey and Pearl Poe Sayers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dudley Blevins, Jr., a son, Mark Kevin Blevins, and a brother, James R. Sayers.
She was a member of the Falling Water Baptist Church and had worked for the Smyth County News & Messenger for 25 years.
Surviving are five children, William Richard Blevins and wife Carol, Kingsport, Tenn.; Connie Blevins Arndt and husband Ron, Kingsport; Jeffery Lynn and Fiancée, Sandy, Marion; James Dennis Blevins, Marion; Kimberly Blevins Williams and husband Mark, Satellite Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Warren Dewey Sayers, Marion; Malcolm Eugene Sayers, Baltimore, MD; one sister, Francis Grey Pennington, Marion; special sister in law, Barbara Boots Sayers, Marion; six grandchildren, Tim Cox, Kristi Schorr, Brian Blevins, Kolbi Arndt, Katie Williams, Renee Blevins, three great- grandchildren, Austin Blevins, Chaz Cox, Cassie Cox. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cecil Sturgill and Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. Interment will follow in the Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the funeral home.

Goodman
Eugene "Whitney" Goodman, age 65, of Marion died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of Laurel Springs United Methodist Church. He graduated from Marion Senior High School where he was a football player. He was a life-long truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Alma Goodman.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Smith Goodman of Marion; two daughters and son-in-law, Theressa and Chuck Johnson of Atkins and Kim S. Miller of Roanoke; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Peggy G. Dean, Doris and Popeye Martin and Tammy and Allan Winebarger, all of Marion; three grandchildren, Sarah Johnson, Britt Johnson and Adam Miller; two great-grandchildren, BreeAnna and Cody; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Catherine Deese and the Rev. Jack Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Cemetery in Marion. The family received friends Friday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

McKinnon
Iva Clye Pool McKinnon, age 92, died Tuesday, Jan, 29, 2002, in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
She was born March 13, 1909 in Comers Rock, one of 16 children and the last survivor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev.Claude McKinnon.
Mrs. McKinnon became a Christian at an early age, and remained dedicated, and was a partner to her husband's ministry.
Survivors include one son and daughter –in-law, Rhodney and Margaret Hess McKinnon of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Vernie Lee Sexton of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren, Greg McKinnon and wife Susan, Michelle McKinnon Buckles and husband Sam, Anthony Sexton, Eric Sexton and his wife Angela, and Steve Sexton; seven great-grandchildren, Kelsey McKinnon, Taylor McKinnon, Zachary McKinnon, Cassidy McKinnon, Annie Laurie Buckles, Jilliann Sexton and Tiffany Sexton.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 31, 2002, from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Lloyd Sheets and Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Interment followed in the Roselawn Cemetery.
