Smith
Ella Mae Smith, age 87, of Marion, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of the East End Baptist Church and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was the director of the W. W. Scott Senior Citizens' Center from 1983 until she retired in 1994 at the age of 80.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Smith; three children, William David Smith, Elizabeth Ann Smith, and Janie Thomas.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Patricia Ann Smith of Centreville, and Kenneth E. and Margaret Wampler Smith of Broadway; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth S. and Franklin E. Coe of Roanoke, and Evelyn S. and Bob Taylor of Marion; three brothers, Isaac W. Kell of Marion, Edd Kell of Saltville, and Walter Kell of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Bessie Neal of Saltville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends and neighbors at Millerwood Apartments.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at East End Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Jones and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7- 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
Flowers will be accepted or donations for a memorial in her honor may be made to the East End Baptist Church, 414 Groseclose Street, Marion VA, 24354.

Coe
James "Jimmy" Junior Coe, age 74, of Atkins died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.
He was a member of Atkins Baptist Church and was a renowned bluegrass fiddle player He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bertha Coe; four sisters, Leonia Roberts, Dolly Alitizer, JoAnn Martin and Gladys Coe; and one brother, Claude Coe.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Nancy Surber Coe of Atkins; three daughters and one son-in-law, Brenda Peters of Florida, Mary Osborne and Kathy and Tony Jones all of Atkins; seven grandchildren, James and fiancée Beth Anne, Hope, Heather, Chris, Daniel, Kelly and Buffy; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Exie Dunham of Plainsflat, Tenn., Ruby Walls of Amsterdale, W.Va., Betty Mays of Marion, Margaret and Ted Perkins of Pennsylvania, Sue Hughs of Thomasyville, N.C., and Mary and Roger Stone of High Point, N.C.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Dennie and Linda Coe of Atlanta and Sonnie Coe of High Point, N.C.; and a host of special nieces, nephews, and many, many loving friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Jack Burke officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The family received friends Monday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Jones
Vergie M. Holston Jones, age 89, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at her residence.
She was born July 12, 1912, in Crawfish Valley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Matthew Jones; and her parents, W.H. "Burr" and Mary E. Shupe Holston.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce J. Robbins of Rural Retreat; four sons, Tom Holston, Andy Wolfe, Richard Wolfe, and Jimmy Jones, all of Rural Retreat; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, at 1 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, with the Rev. Wayne Linkous and the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Community Church Cemetery in the Crawfish Valley.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat, or at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Robbins, at any time.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department or the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Powell
Della M. Powell, age 87, of Marion died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in Westminster, Maryland. She was the widow of Harry H. Powell.
Surviving are one daughter, Phyllis Shakespeare of Plains, Mont.; Ttwo sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Kathie Powell of Reisterstown, Md., and Dick and Ruth Powell of Atkins; two half-sisters, Margaret Jenkins of Georgia and Ovella Griffey of Marion; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Burial followed in Wassum Cemetery in Atkins. The family received friends Sunday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Surber
Lester Allen Surber, age 43, of Saltville died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He is survived by one son, Edward David Surber of Marion; one daughter, Leslie Surber Smith of Marion; one brother, the Rev. Ralph Surber of Saltville; two sisters, Margaret Borders and Della Gregory, both of Glade Spring; two grandchildren, Katelynn Brooke Sheets and Stevie Michell Blevins. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at 7 p.m. at Cedars Baptist Church in Marion with the Rev. Avery Sheets officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. just prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward the funeral expenses.

Vestal
Margaret Lee Vestal, age 90, of Damascus, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Damascus, and was a daughter of the late Farline T. Brown and Thomas R. Wright. She was a widow of Earl C. Vestal and was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Wright and Charles Wright; and also by two sisters, Florence Eastridge and Bertha Shelley. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Jo Camper Stamper and son-in-law, Monte l. Stamper, of Damascus; two granddaughters, A. Darlene Stamper of Damascus and Cindy L. Cox and her husband, Randy L. Cox, of Church Hill, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m., at Mock Cemetery in Damascus with the Rev. R. J. Cullop officiating.

Wilson
Howard Edward Wilson Sr., age 53, of Chilhowie died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002.
He was born Jan. 15, 1949, in Washington County to the late John E. and Bertha Doss Wilson. He was a supervisor for Industrial Welding & Machine Corp. in Atkins for over 20 years and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Willie Faye Pinkston.
Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn Lowe Wilson; three sons, Howard E. Wilson Jr., Flat Ridge, David Johnathan Kirk and Rueben "Levi" Kirk, both of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise Marie and Chris Irwin, Alabama; five grandchildren; two brothers, Donald L. Wilson and wife Ali, Mountain City, and John "JW" Wilson, Glade Spring; three sisters, Virgie Sweesy and Frances Stewart & husband Jerry, both of Glade Spring, and Dorothy Cason, Dulutli, Ga.; mother and father-in-law, Ira Lee and Emma Lowe (Lowes Garage), Chilhowie; brotherly cousin and best friend, J. C. Wilson; and many loving nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. in Bradley-Finney Funeral Chapel with Pastor Neal Johnson and the Rev. Don Wyatt officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the funeral chapel.

Crawford
Gertrude Welch Crawford of Saltville, 89, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Francis Marion Manor in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Crawford and son, Jack W. Crawford.
Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Doris Crawford, Saltville, and Jerry and Peggy Crawford, Mt. Airy, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Peggy Rolen, Saltville.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Elizabeth Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Williams and the Rev. Dale Strange officiating. Family will receive friends at the home of Jim and Doris Crawford at any time.

Jerry Franklin Davidson Sr. of Saltville, 60, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his father, William St. John Davidson, and one son, John William Davidson.
Survivors include: his wife, Sheila Davidson, Saltville; two sons, Jerry F. Davidson Jr, Saltville, and Michael S. Davidson, Abingdon; his mother Pairalee Tolbert, Saltville; four brothers, Junior Davidson, Bobby Davidson, and Michael Tolbert, all of Saltville, and Matthew Tolbert Jr., Kingsport; eight sisters, Mary Helen Dinsmore, Karen Tolbert, Sharon Tolbert, Ginger Frye, Cathy Frye and Delilah Olinger, all of Saltville, Melody Myers, Marion, and Teresa Morgan, Fayetteville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Adam Davidson, Joshua Davidson, Justin Davidson and Keith Davidson; and special friends, Keith Crabtree and family.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kyle French officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Goetzinger
Ora Richardson Goetzinger of Sugar Grove, 77, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
She was preceded in death by one son, Artie Ray Goetzinger, one brother, Herschel Richardson, and her twin sister, Ola Lyon.
She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church and a graduate of Marion College. She was a bookkeeper for Greenwood Insurance Agency and Rye Valley Lumber Company. Mrs. Goetzinger was also employed by Smyth County Motor Co. for many years.
Survivors include: her husband Delbert "Del" Goetzinger of Sugar Grove; one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Jeff Ratliff of Speedwell; two sons and daughters-in-law, H.C. and Olyvia Goetzinger and Bill and Charlotte Goetzinger, all of Sugar Grove; four grandchildren, Matilda Brewer, Radford, Michael, Kayla, and Charlie Goetzinger, all of Sugar Grove; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 24, at Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial followed in Hutton-Cox Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Gary Paul Hafer III, infant son of Gary Paul Hafer Jr. and Christina Haulsey of Marion, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville.
