Pugh
Margaret Patrick Pugh, 80, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Francis Marion Manor in Marion.
Mrs. Pugh was born in Oak Hill, W.Va., to the late Frederick and Anna Patrick and was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley C. Pugh, and a son, Stephen Pugh.
Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Robert F. Taylor, Bethesda, Md.; two grandsons, Robert S. and wife Megan Taylor, Adamstown, Md., and Lt. David F. Taylor, Anacortes, Wash.; one great-grandson, Robert K. Taylor, Adamstown, Md.; one sister, Mabel Landers, Cross Lanes, W. Va.; one brother, Frank Everett Patrick, Austin, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Bradshaw and June Harrington, both of Marion; one brother-in-law, Joseph Pugh, Hudson, Fla.; a special friend, Charlotte Bennett, Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo and Pastor Mark Ross officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Ritchie
George Washington Ritchie of Meadowview, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a native of Shady Valley, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in the Damascus area. He was a retired meat cutter and greenhouse worker and had farmed all of his life. Mr. Ritchie was a member of Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena Parris Ritchie, five brothers and five sisters.
Survivors include: two sons, George Melvin Ritchie, Meadowview, and Bobby Dean Ritchie, Glade Spring; one sister, Ellen Dunn, Abingdon; one brother-in-law, John Irby Parris, Boothwyn, Pa; three grandsons; four granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service was conducted on Friday, May 24, 2002, at Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Critcher, the Rev. Mahlon Wyatt and the Rev. David Hill officiating. Interment and committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. Those attending the interment and committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Robinson
Samuel A. Robinson, 68, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Eileen Robinson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Shelia Robinson, and Greg and Dawn Robinson, all of Marion; one sister Katie Whitt Hutton, Marion; one brother, Albert B. Robinson, Marion; three grandchildren, Jake Robinson, Nikki Robinson and Holly Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Wassum Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Guy Testerman and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the funeral home.

Simmerman
Dr. Barry Lynn Simmerman, D.D.S. of Cordova, Tenn., 46, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Dr. Simmerman was born in Marion. He was a general dentist in private practice.
Survivors include: parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly J. Simmerman Jr. of Memphis; brother, Dr. Steve J. Simmerman of Memphis, grandmothers, Audrey Umberger Simmerman and Lota Dix Copenhaver, both of Wytheville.
Funeral service will be Sunday, May 26, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Don Stansell with interment in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home Saturday, May 25, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Special Olympics.

Atwell
Mollie Kate Atwell , 89, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at her residence in Ceres. Mrs. Atwell was born to the late Isaac Jefferson and Mary E. Turley and was preceded in death by her husband, Essie Atwell, and an infant child. She was a member of Goodman's Chapel.
Survivors include: one sister, Daisy M. Cregger of Maryland, one brother, John Andrew Turley of Alabama, and 36 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 at Goodman's Chapel with the Rev. Charles Turley and the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Burial followed in the Sunset Community Cemetery.

Brooks
Claude Calvin Brooks Sr., 76, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at his residence in Marion.
Mr. Brooks was born in Troutdale to the late John and Dema Brooks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Fortner Brooks. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation with 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post # 4667 and the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Claude Jr. and Sandra Alderman Brooks, Wytheville; grandchildren, Christopher Brooks, Wytheville, and Susan and her husband Mark Woods, Bluff City, Tenn.; one great-grandchild, Dema Woods; two step- grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Charles Gene Huff. Funeral services will held on Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Surber officiating. Interment will follow in Comers Creek Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. Bradley's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Evans
Newman Everette Evans Sr., 73, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Survivors include: his wife, Edith Bernice Null Evans, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Newman Jr. and Peggy Evans, Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Alan McGhee, Chilhowie; four sisters-in-law, Letta Evans, Edna Naimaster, and Shirley Jackson, all of Marion, and Cora Felts of Chilhowie; four brothers-in-law, Gordon and Mildred Null and Charles Null, all of Marion, and Lee Null and Ray and Becky Null, all of Henderson, N.C.; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 28, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Wing officiating. Interment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Gilblair
Betty Hayes Gilblair of Konnarock, 59, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Konnarock and had lived in Washington, D.C. and in Cheyenne, Wyo. before moving back to Konnarock in 1985. She was of the Baptist faith. She was the daughter of the late Edgar Lee Hayes.
Survivors include: her mother, Arlene Hayes, Konnarock; one sister, Shirley Ann Levitt and her husband, Herbert, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the Konnarock Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Azen Cemetery.

Killinger
Dr. George Poole Killinger, 82, died Saturday, May 25, 2002. He was born May 28, 1919, in Smyth County, the son of the late George Glenn Killinger and Edith Poole Killinger. He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. Dr. Killinger was a long-time member of the Marion Art League and was well known for his "eccentric teapots." Before retiring in Marion, he resided in Jacksonville, Fla., where he was the past president of the Florida Dental Society. He practiced dentistry for thirty years and was involved in the development of San Jose Shores, as well as a medical office and men's clothing store in the downtown area of Jacksonville. Dr. Killinger was a member of San Jose Country Club and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Florida.
Dr. Killinger attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and earned his dental degree from Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Survivors include: two sons, Brad Killinger, Jacksonville, Fla., and Keith Killinger and his wife, Ginny, of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren, Blair Killinger and Brad Killinger Jr.; one cousin, Beulah Greer, Roanoke; one niece, Becky Gillis, Charlotte, N.C.; a devoted family friend, Martha Swanson, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and long time care-giver Lynn Barnes Chandler, Marion.
It was Dr. Killinger's wish that there be no final services and that he be cremated. If you care to remember him in a meaningful way, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 222 W. Main Street, Marion, VA 24354.

Parsons
Rev. H. Wayne Parsons of Meadowview, 58, died on Sunday, May 26, 2002. He was a native of Smyth County and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was the son of the late Homer and Juanita Parsons Doss and the grandson of the late Rev. L.H. and Virginia Dye. He was a graduate of Abingdon High School and the Washington County Technical School.
He was founder and pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Meadowview. He was very active with local schools, sports, church and missions activities. He was a lifetime member of Meadowview PTA, and was currently the treasurer of the Lebanon Baptist Association and a member of the Virginia Baptist General Board in Richmond. He was an avid bicyclist.
Survivors include: his wife, Bertha Humphreys Parsons; one son, Steven Carroll Parsons, Meadowview; one brother, Gary Parsons, Richmond; four sisters, Mary Lee and her husband, D.C. Shuler, Sugar Grove, Linda Parsons Danner, Millie Parsons Burke, and Gail Parsons Parks, all of Marion; two grandchildren, Shelby Osborne Mardis and
Jackie Osborne; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28 at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Peeler, the Rev. Darrell Pickle and the Rev. Richard Poe officiating.
The committal service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday by 10:15 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.

Lemual Richard Romans Sr., age 80, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemual and Elizabeth Romans.
Mr. Romans was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the Marion VFW Post #4667 and was a life member of the Marion Life Saving Crew.
Survivors include: his wife, Thelma Dillman Romans, Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and John Pickle, Rural Retreat, Peggy and E.T. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667. Masonic rites were conducted by Marion Masonic Lodge #31 A.F & A.M.

Harry Leslie Trail of Marion, 83, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Ridgefield Retirement Home in Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Joe and Cosby Trail; his wife Bertha Trail; his brother Mack Trail; and sisters, Laire Thomas, Agnes Havens, and Ovella Ferguson.
Survivors include: two brothers, Roy Trail, Marion, and Edgar Trail, Roaring Gap, N.C.; two sisters, Naomi Atwood, Marion, and Polly Joy, Atlanta, Ga.; a special niece and nephew, Arnold and Debbie Trail, Marion, and many other nieces and nephews. Mitchell
Robert Kyle “Bobby” Mitchell of Saltville, 58, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mr. Mitchell was retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving four tours in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Preston Mitchell.
Survivors include: his mother, Pauline Minton of Saltville; one brother, Travis Mitchell, Saltville; three sisters, Penny Minton, Marion, Marlene Gill, Glade Spring, and Rita Terry, Chilhowie; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kyle French officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 - 7:30 p.m. prior to the service. Military rites and graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, at the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn.
