Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Rodriguez
Rodriguez, Reynel J. "Rey" of Roanoke, 57, died Saturday June 1, 2002, after a long battle with colon cancer. He was born in Havana, Cuba. Rey came to the U.S. at the age of 15 as part of the "Peter Pan" group and tried to live the American dream. Rodriguez earned BS and Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Marquette University and an MBA degree at the University of Detroit. He retired, due to failing health, as general manager of Fedco Automotive in Buffalo, N.Y. From 1987-1992, he was marketing manager, Shelters Division of Brunswick Defense in Marion (now Marion Composites).
Survivors include: his wife, Victoria Eller Rodriguez, Roanoke; his mother, Rosalia Rodriguez and brother, Ramon Rodriguez, both of Miami, Fla.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Marney and Charles Heath, Roanoke; two daughters, Heather and Holly Rodriguez of Indiana; one stepson, Aaron Justin Heath, Buffalo, N.Y.; one grandson; and several nieces.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 631 N. Jefferson St., in Roanoke. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Memorial donations may be sent St. Andrews Catholic Church or to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825 Electric Rd., SW, Suite A, Roanoke, VA 24018.
Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home (540-366-0707) is in charge of arrangements.

Shrader
James David Shrader of Mine Run, Va., 65, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at his residence. He was born March 24, 1937, in Burkes Garden, a son of the late John David and Ruth Pauline Shrader. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Howard "Woody" Shrader. He attended Bluefield College and was a veteran of both the U.S. Army and U. S. Coast Guard. He was a retired jeweler. Mr. Shrader had played professional football with the Chicago Bears.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce Price Shrader, Mine Run; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina Shrader Herring and Kevin Herring, Winchester, and Victoria Shrader Gibson and Cameron Gibson, Orange; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sue Michaels Shrader, Cherry Grove, S.C.; one sister Karen Yvonne Slaydon, White Post, Va.; four grandchildren, Melanie and Ethan Herring and Cody and Dainee Gibson; and 13 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on June 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Craigs Baptist Church in Spotsylvania. Fellowship will follow after the service at the family residence.

Smith
Elizabeth Pauline Smith died Sunday, June 2, 2002, and Abegail Lain Smith died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. They were the infant daughters of Brandi VanHoy and Michael Smith of Marion. They are also survived by their grandparents, Wayne and Dollie VanHoy of Marion and James and Pat Smith of Easley, S.C.; great-grandmother, Mary VanHoy of Marion; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Old Glade Cemetery, Glade Spring, with the Rev. Neal Johnson officiating.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Oakes
Mary Virginia Oakes, age 91, of Atkins died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
She was the widow of John J. Oakes. Mrs. Oakes taught for 33 years in the Smyth County School System.
Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bill Pratt of Atkins; two granddaugthers, Dr. Carole Pratt and husband Dr. Rick Mansell of Pulaski, and Macy Pratt of Roanoke; two great-grandchildren, Megan Mansell of Charlottesville and Matt Mansell of Washington, D.C.; one niece, Doris Orr of Rich Valley; two nephews, Dr. Ross M. Orr Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa., and Dr. William K. Orr of Waynesboro; a very special niece by marriage, Ann Orr of Catawba; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. William T. Wing III officiating. A private burial was held.

Speer
John Denton Speer, age 93, of Glade Spring died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was the son of the late James and Elizabeth Buchanan Speer. Mr. Speer was a retired farmer and a World War II Army veteran. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include: three nieces, Iris Biggs, Spencer, Va., Mary Brown and Phoebe Cooke, both of Madison, N.C.; and one nephew, Johnny Wilson, Madison, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Spring Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rock Spring Cemetery, 31217 Rivermont Drive, Meadowview, VA 24361.

Stamper
Susan Odell Stamper, age 93, of Damascus died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her residence. She was a lifelong resident of Damascus and was a daughter of the late Authur and Ida Sutton Fenner. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus.
She was a widow of Vester W. Stamper and was preceded in death by a daughter, Madge Stamper; her step-mother , Addie Baker Fenner; and two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Mona V. and Ralph L. Garrett; one son and daughter-in-law, Monte L. and Betty Jo Camper Stamper, all of Damascus; one sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Mabie Lamb, Newport News; one step-sister, Ellen Baker Smith of Damascus; five step-brothers, George Baker, James Baker, John Baker, Lloyd Baker, all of Damascus, and Roy Baker of Ardsley, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in the First Baptist Church in Damascus with the Rev. Alan McCullough officiating. The committal service and interment were Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus, VA 24236 or to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 993, Damascus, VA 24236. The family received friends Monday prior to the funeral service.

Swain
W. Clark Swain, age 85, of Marion died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was an active member of the South Fork Baptist Church and a member of the Leesburg Baptist Church in Leesburg where he was baptized in 1937.
Mr. Swain retired from Ross Millwork Company after 30 years of service. He worked for Leesburg Laundry for 22 years and was a barber. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and VFW Post #4667. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.
Survivors include: two sons, W. Albert Swain of Leesburg and Jeffrey Clark Swain of Bakersville, N.C.; one sister, Sylvia Byrnes of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one brother, Everette Swain of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and special caregivers Minnie Tuggle, Shirley Haskins, Judy Wain, Paula Holmes, Donna Lockhart and Mary Ball.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mark Totten officiating. Burial followed in St. James Lutheran Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday night at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to South Fork Baptist Church, 215 South Fork Rd., Marion, VA 24354.

Wilcox
John Wilcox, age 78, of Marion died in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a longtime resident of Ridgefield. Mr. Wilcox was a skilled wood-craftsman an a very loving and caring person.
Survivors include: one sister, Mary Smith of Gray Court, S.C.; special caregivers, Joey and Debbie Williams of Seven mile Ford; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Jackson Family Cemetery in Ivanhoe, with Mr. J. Howard Burton officiating. The family received friends on Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Ashlin
Richard J. "Dick" Ashlin, age 59, of Sugar Grove died Friday, March 1, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Ashlin was born in Smyth County and was preceded in death by his father Robert W, "Joe" Ashlin. He was employed with Sprint Telephone Company for 38 years and was of the Methodist Faith.
Survivors include: his wife of 39 years, Nila Ashlin; his mother, Ruth Ashlin of Sugar Grove; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Dan Woods of Sugar Grove; one son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Paula Ashlin of Sugar Grove; three brothers, Robert W. "Bob" Ashlin and wife JoAnn, of Big Sandy, Texas, David Ashlin and wife Inis of Sugar Grove and Danny Ashlin of Sugar Grove; two granddaughters, Sarah Woods and Whitney Woods of Sugar Grove; special friends, Don and Tammy Barker and Mick and Betty Kirby; and several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, at 2 p.m. from the Wharf Hill United Methodist Church in Sugar Grove with the Rev. Kenneth Conner and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment followed in the Burtons Chapel Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations can be made to the Burtons Chapel Cemetery Fund c/o Garnett Ralph Ross, 252 Glenwood Rd. Troutdale, VA 24378. The family received friends from Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Barker
Anna Louise Barker, age 82, of Marion died Sunday, March 3, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Smyth County to the late George and Sallie D. Heffinger and was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Barker, a daughter Pamela Sue, a grandson Dale Lee Roberts, a granddaughter Miranda Dawn Roberts and several brothers and sisters. She was a member of Russell's Chapel.
Survivors include: three sons and daughters-in-law, J.C. and Judy Testerman of Marion, Jackie and Janet Barker of Bristol, Dennis and Jayne Barker of Marion; five daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Maxine Rhoten of Marion, Joyce Hamm of Marion, Sue and Claude Atwell of Marion, Glenna and Bill Turley of Glade Spring and Cathy and special caregiver Paul Hagy of Marion; one sister, Pauline Hash of Baltimore, Md.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and her dog and devoted companion, Dingo.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, March 6, at 2 p.m. from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Cress, the Rev. Dennis Turley, the Rev. Pat Gilbert and the Rev. Avery Sheets officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Brewer
Woodrow Wilson Brewer, age 85, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born in Smyth County to the later George Washington Brewer and Mary Ross Buchanan. He was preceded in death by his wife Ollie Marie Hale and stepson Larry Taylor.
Mr. Brewer was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Virginia before moving to Maryland. He was employed for over 30 years at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where he supervised a vehicle maintenance shop. His hobby was woodworking.
He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Bel Air, Md., where he served as a deacon. After his retirement he relocated in Wildwood, Fla., where he also served as deacon and to Sugar Grove where he was an active member and Sunday School teacher in Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Irene Taylor Brewer of Sugar Grove; six children, Mary Wilck, Palmyra, N.Y., Donald Brewer, Bel Air, Md., Jesse Brewer, Bel Air, Md., H. Ray Brewer, Churchville, Md., Linda Matthews, Chase, Md., and Paul Brewer, Whiteford, Md.; one stepson, Charles Taylor of Sugar Grove; three sisters, Ruth Roberts of Troutdale, Joanna Spence of Wilmington, Del., and Eva Breitenbach of Vienna; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held at 8 p.m. Monday, March 4, from the Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Graveside services will be held today, Wednesday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at the Bel Air Memorial Gardens in Maryland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Sugar Grove Baptist Church or to the Calvary Baptist Church of Bel Air, Md. The family received friends Monday evening at Sugar Grove Baptist Church.

Cook
Ollie Mae Branche Cook, age 80, of Glade Spring died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Cambridge House in Bristol, Tenn.
She was a native of Welch, W.Va., but had lived many years in the Damascus area. She was a daughter of the late Thomas G. and Lucinda French Branche. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Elder Mayford K. Cook, two sons, Lyle and Martin R. Cook, and several brothers and one sister. She was a member of Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church for over 40 years.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Elder Billy K. and Bonnie Cook of Glade Spring; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Sue and Hardaway Sauls of Bristol, Charlotte and Bill Wood of Kill Devil, N.C., Tommie and Ronnie Randolf of Cary, N.C., and Hazel Keith of Bristol; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Bernice Branche of Mobile, Ala.; and one sister, Goldie Saunders of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Curt Heath, Eugene Blevins, Eddie Lyle, J.C. Hagger, Franklin Viers and Weldon Joyce officiating. Burial followed in the Rush Creek Cemetery in Glade Spring. The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home in Damascus on Monday, March 4.
