Frye
Gladys Hedrick Frye, 84, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was a former resident of Chilhowie. She was born in Jonesville and had been a resident of Kingsport since September 2002.
She was a graduate of Radford College and taught home economics at Chilhowie High School in the Smyth County School System. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and volunteered at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Sanders (Sam) Frye; her parents, Garvie and Martha Hedrick; one sister, Ovella Frazier; and two brothers, Braxton Hedrick and Claude Hedrick.
Survivors include four sisters, Stella Kinney of Greenville, Ill., Ada Lamb of Jonesville, Nina Howard of Jonesville and Ivan Ann Little of Clinton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 8 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. John Graham officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2003 at the Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie. The family received friends Thursday before the service.

Smith
The Rev. Luvenia Barbara Smith, 73, of Chilhowie died Tuesday, July 1, 2003.
She was born March 9, 1930, in Cumberland County, N.C., to the late Malachi and Albertha Blue. Against the tradition of the time, she, affectionately known as “Momma,” became an ordained minister in 1969. In 1970, she opened The Way of Peace Holiness Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she ministered and nurtured all who crossed her path. After her retirement from ministry, she moved to Chilhowie where she was embraced as one of their own.
She is survived by her husband, William J. Smith; four children, Sharon Smith of Uniondale, N.Y., Diane Smith-Patton of Chilhowie, Dennis Smith of Chilhowie and Shirley Smith of Boston, Mass.; a man who has been like a son, Stevie Patton Sr. of Chilhowie; eight grandchildren, Sha-Rein, DaySha, DaWayne, Joy, Stevie Jr., Anthony, Treadwell and Krystal; and one great-granddaughter, DaySha Simone.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, July 6, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Chilhowie Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Stowers
Fred W. Stowers, 74, died Wednesday, July 2, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loura Hall Stowers and Henry E. Stowers, two sisters, Virginia King and Francis Harden.
Stowers is survived his wife, Maxine Sheets Stowers of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Karlene “Karcie” and Anthony Lambert of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Henry and Barbara Stowers of Max Meadows, Wiley Melvin and Trish Stowers of Austinville and James Wiley and Trisha Stowers of Marion; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ethel McFarlane and Ruth and Shelby Haga, all of Cedar Springs, and Henrietta “Becky” and Vance Corvin of Abingdon; eight grandchildren, Adam Jason Stowers, Jeremy Cheyenne Stowers, Shelley Rose Stowers, Brandi Lynette Stowers Lewis, Joseph Steven Stowers, Brittany Danielle Lambert, Michelle Ann Stowers and Jessie Nicole Stowers; several nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Robert Hagy; and special friends, Cecil Hall and Dennis Greer.
Funeral services will be held at Seaver-Brown Chapel on Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Don Tate officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family received friends Friday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Duncan
Richard E. Duncan, of Miami, Fla. and originally of Atkins, died Saturday, August 16, 2003.
He was born in Draper in 1927, and was a decorated veteran and served during the period of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam conflicts. He attained the rank of major after 22 years of active service. He then pursued a career as a real estate broker, contractor, appraiser and investor.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Pedee); two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Ed Pugh and Jody and Bill Jorgensen; four grandchildren, Chris Pugh, Adam Jorgensen, Meagan Jorgensen and Kelli Pugh Smith and husband Mike; two brothers and sister-in-law, Harry and Imogene Duncan, Bruce Duncan; one sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Harlow Atkins and one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Duncan.
He was a brother-in-law to J.C. Winesett and family, Walter (Dick) Winesett and family, BeEtta Hester and family, and Helen Dority and family.
Visitation will be Wed., Aug. 20 at Alligood Carol Funeral Home, 17345 S. Dixie Highway, Perrine, Fla. (305-235-3871). Private family graveside service will be held Thurs., Aug. 21.

Edmonds
Ethel Young Edmonds, 89, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of Goodman’s Chapel Methodist Church. She was executive director of the Smyth County Chapter, American Red Cross, for 19 years.
Her husband, Ellis Ballard Edmonds, preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, B.W. and Patsy A. Edmonds of Ashland and C.W. and Christine E. Edmonds of Abingdon; one granddaughter, Melanie Ann and Scott Titmus of Richmond; two grandsons, Anthony Scott and Diana J. Edmonds of Houston, Texas and Ross Clinton Edmonds of Blacksburg; two great-granddaughters, Megan and Nicole Edmonds, both of Houston, Texas; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Mon., August 18, at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Graveside services were held Aug. 19 at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion.
The family received friends Monday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Mildred Atkins French, 93, died Saturday, August 16, 2003, in Meadow View Terrace Long Term Care in Clarksville.
She was a graduate of Marion College High School in Marion, and Emory& Henry College in Emory. She taught at Marion College for several years and retired from teaching at Marion Senior High School. She was a long-term active member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion, and was a life-time member of Marion Chapter No. 72 of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton (Tony) French.
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Betty F. and David Russell of Clarksville; two granddaughters, Jennifer R. Whitlock of Burlington, N.C. and Sara R. Sweet of Raleigh, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Catherine Lee, Barrington Lee, Emma Grace Whitlock, all of Burlington, N.C. and Sullivan Page Sweet of Raleigh, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating.

Gillespie
Henry T. Gillespie, 78, of Seminole, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at St. Petersburg General Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was born April 23, 1925 in Chatham Hill, and moved to Seminole, Fla. in 1952 from Rural Retreat. He was a welder for Economy Machine for 12 years, then was a welder and burner for 20 years with Misener Marine. He was a member of the Church of God.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty L. Gillespie of Seminole, Fla.; two sons, Thomas H. Gillespie and Michael J. Gillespie, both of Seminole, Fla.; one daughter, Gail I. Gillespie of Seminole, Fla.; one brother, Dorsey Lee Gillespie of Rural Retreat; six sisters, Ella Oakes of Saltville, Patsy Seip of Live Oak, Fla., Ovella Perryman of Marion, Ky., Olivene Atwell, Audrey Meadows and Elsie Cameron, all of Rural Retreat; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at E. Dale Gunter Funeral Home, St. Petersburg, Fla., with the Rev. Fred V. Cooley officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Lewis
Margaret J. “Peggy” Lewis, 74, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol, Tenn.
She was a life-long resident of Washington County and the daughter of the late Fred and Minnie Johnson. Three brothers, Jim, Howard and Paul Johnson preceded her in death.
She was retired from the Washington County School System and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Damascus Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Taylors Valley Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence E. Lewis; one son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Anita Lewis of Damascus; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Ray Sigmon of Bristol Tenn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Jackie “Hopper” and Joyce Johnson of Damascus; three grandchildren, Amanda Lewis Mullins and husband Danny, Nick and Alex Sigmon; two step-granddaughters, Jennifer and Andrea Krauser; one great-grandson, Troy Mullins; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at the Garrett Funeral Home with Maurice Widener and Jim Hutchinson officiating. The committal service and interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be sent to the Taylors Valley Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O. Box 143, Damascus, Va. 24236. The family received friends Tuesday evening prior to the funeral service.

Pennington
Rena Marie Pennington, 82, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Md.
Born in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lee Ander and Lannie Victoria Brooks Combs and the wife of the late Wilson Jackson Pennington. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Dean Combs and three sisters, Edith Faye Doss, Ethel Irene Sheets and Hattie Lucill Winebarger. Before she was married, she worked at her family’s print shop in Virginia. She had also worked as a waitress at Rubins Drive In Restaurant in Bel Air, Md. and as a seamstress at Bata Shoe Company, Belcamp, Md. She was a past member of the Otter Point Boat Club Auxiliary in Abingdon, Md.
She is survived by two sons, I. Dale Pennington of Bel Air, Md. and Ernest Lee Pennington of Joppa, Md.; two daughters, Betty L. Remines and Ruth Ann Tolliver, both of Bel Air, Md.; one brother, Robert Lewis Combs of Chilhowie; four sisters, Mary Magdeline Blevins and Shirley Ann Blevins both of Chilhowie, Delcie Lee Pennington of Atkins, and Della Juanita Williams of Walkers Creek; 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.
Funeral services will be held at the McComas Funeral Home, P.A. Abingdon, Md. on Thursday, August 21, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William L. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, Md.

Patricia Teter (Pat) Vicars, 70, died Monday, August 18, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was Den Mother of Cub Scout Pack # 93 for several years.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Vicars, Jr. of Marion; one daughter, Donna Murtagh of Palmer, Ak.; one son, David Vicars of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Florence Edwards and Dottie and Skip Slaughter, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Michael David Vicars, Daniel Mark Vicars, Robyn Lynn Murtagh, Jacob Scott Vicars, and Linda Murtagh; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Entombment will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Mausoleum in Marion.
