Chapman
Edgar Wilmer Chapman, 87, of Saltville, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Daphne “Dot” Chapman of Saltville; four sons, James David Chapman, Malcolm Eugene Chapman, Billy Joe Chapman and Edgar Allen Chapman, all of Maryland; one daughter, Patricia Ann Chapman of Maryland; three sisters, Virginia Routh, Martha Brown and Edna Allison, all of Saltville; two brothers, Cliff Chapman of Pennsylvania and Samuel Chapman of Maryland; six grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Gearry Jonas and the Rev. David Olinger officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home prior to the service. Graveside services were conducted at 12 noon on Monday, April 14, in the Mount Rose Cemetery with the Saltville VFW Post No. 7328 conducting military rites.

Cunningham
Maxine Cunningham, 72, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was a member of Ferry Farm Baptist Church and the Christian Women’s Club. She was a former member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church.
She was a loving wife and mother who will be missed by family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Hubert Stanley Scott and Ruby Snavely Scott.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Michael Cunningham; a daughter, Sydma E. Hatzopoulos and husband Gray Williamson of Bethany W.Va.; three sons, Ted J. Hatzopoulos and wife Shana of Norfolk, and James M. Cunningham of Fredericksburg; a sister, Christine Lommerse of Florida; two brothers, John Gillespie of Texas and David Gillespie of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Sara M. Johnston and husband Ken, and Nicolas T. Hatzopoulos.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Paige A. Young officiating. Interment was in Quantico National Cemetery.

Hall
Janie Johnston Hall, 81, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Chester D. Johnston Sr. and Dorothy C. Johnston and was preceded in death by a son, Jerry M. Hall; and a brother, Chester D. Johnston Jr.
She was a member of East End Baptist Church in Marion.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Herman “Bud” Hall; four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Walter Waddell of Atkins, Cathy and Terry Lewis of Surfside Beach, S.C., Jackie and Chris McVey of Bristol and Becky Hall of Chilhowie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Candias Hall of Clintwood, and Steve and Tami Hall of Pearisburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Carroll and Marvin Gullion of Marion; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Hall Rice and husband Joe of Chilhowie; four sisters-in-law, Francis Harmon of Round Lake, Ill., Virginia McFarlane of Marion, Opal Ratcliffe of Ft. Gay, W. Va., and Nancy Elliott of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Paul Jones, the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Gene Little officiating. Havens
Lula M. Havens, 69, of Chilhowie, died Friday, April 11 2003, at Francis Marion Manor in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Havens.
Survivors include three sons, Luther Frank Havens of Atkins, Paul William Havens of Greenville, S.C., and John K. Havens of Glade Spring, Va.; five daughters, Mary Jane Johnson of Marion, Judy Roark of Prince George, Nannie Martin of Marion, Lynn Fullen of Glade Spring, and JoRita Wilburn of Lebanon; her mother, Nannie Lamie of Chilhowie; one sister, Martha Lamie of Chilhowie; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Ridgedale Cemetery.

Hunter
Jeanette Reasor Hunter, 80, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at her home in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Hunter; and her parents, Emma Chandler and Daniel Sheffey Reasor.
She was a member of Royal Oak Presbyterian Church in Marion, where she served as an Elder and President of the Women of the Church. She was a charter member of the Wilderness Road Garden Club and the Royal Oak Chapter of the DAR. She was a graduate of James Madison University, taught at Marion College and was a substitute teacher in the Smyth County School System. She served as a member of the Smyth County Community Hospital Board.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bucky Edmondson of Abingdon; one son, Robert A. Hunter Jr. of Appomattox; one brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Margaret Reasor of Abingdon; one sister, Jean Horton of New London, N.C.; one brother-in-law, Bill Hunter and wife Francis Ann of Appomattox; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hamilton of Florida; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a caregiver, Betty Church of Saltville.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alan Gray officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Children’s Home of the Highlands, P.O. Box 545, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Leedy
James Allen “Jimmy” Leedy, 66, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Asbury Place, Wytheville.
He was born in Wythe County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertie Mae Umbarger Leedy and Raymond Gleeves Leedy; a daughter Peggy Sue “Susie” Stowers; and a brother, William Harry “Bill” Leedy.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Gordon Leedy of Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Evelyn Leedy, and Eugene and Vickie Leedy, all of Rural Retreat; four grandchildren, Samantha Leedy, Tanya Leedy, Jeffery Leedy Jr. and Zachary Leedy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, with the Rev. Tony Perry and the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Interment was in the Black Lick Cemetery. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Black Lick Cemetery Fund, the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department, or the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

McIntyre
Melvin Ray McIntyre, 72, of Marion, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
He was a native of Washington County, Tenn., and had lived most of his life in that area.
He was a son of the late Thomas and Geneva Crathers McIntyre. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was an employee of Rich Ice Cream Inc. and was a Protestant.
Survivors include his wife, Verna McIntyre of Marion; one son, Eddie McIntyre of Marion; one grandson, Nathan McIntyre of Marion; one granddaughter, Melissa McIntyre of Marion; seven sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 14, at the Morris-Baker South Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Dunn officiating. Private committal services will be held at U.S. National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., at a later date. Condolences may be sent to www.morrisbaker.com.

Nickols
John Thomas Nickols, 53, of Pelzer, S.C., died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at his home.
He was born in Leesburg, Va., a son of Irene Nickols of Marion and the late John Nickols.
He was a program controller for Lockheed Martin and had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Radio Control.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiancé, Lisa Johnson of Pelzer, S.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Adrian Gresham of Tucker, Ga., and Yolanda and Craig Lopez of Mississippi; a son and daughter-in-law, John Thomas and Tonya Nickols of Ft. Hood, Texas; a sister, Judy Hash and fiancé Ken Spires of Suffolk; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Trudy Nickols of Marion; four grandchildren, Raphael, William, Ryan and Jessica; and his former wives, Elaine Raines of Simpsonville, and Doreen Nickols of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 15, at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home chapel with burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Gracie Mae Bateman Powers, 86, of Marion, died Saturday, April 12, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Glenn Powers of Marion; one daughter and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Ken Cook of Herndon, and Marvin Shephard of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Monica Cook, Deana Morris, Danny Shepherd, and David Shepard; one great-grandchild, Shawn Morris; three sisters, Elsie Ferraro of Marion, Charmie Couch and Faye Boyd, both of Florida; two brothers, Don Roop of Chilhowie and William N. Roop of Florida; numerous step-grandchildren; five stepsons, Edward Powers and Willard Powers, both of Marion, Wade Powers of Sugar Grove, Neal Powers of Seven Mile Ford and Dale Powers of Roanoke; and four step-daughters, Wilma Mabe of White Top, Bertha Wright of Seven Mile Ford, Glenna Hurley and Betty Blevins, both of Marion.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Avery Sheets, the Rev. Otis Barker, and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at McClure Cemetery in Chilhowie. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Surber
Charles W. Surber, 81, of Hampton, died on Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Sentara Careplex following complications from a stroke.
A native of Saltville, he had been a Hampton resident for 46 years. A veteran of WWII, Surber joined the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Union Local 193 and then retired from Combustion Engineers in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Nannie and William L. Surber; two brothers, Winifred and William; and a sister, Anna Mae Rickman. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dessaline Counts Surber; two daughters, Nannie Jennings and Linda Surber; three sons, William and his wife, Karin, Michael and his wife, Margaret, and Edgar; and his sister, Polly Davidson. He also leaves nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nephews, nieces and great-nephews and nieces.
Watson
Rick D. Watson, 47, of Lenoir, N.C., died Friday, April 10, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.
He was a native of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Rhonald and Eula Watson. He lived in Lenoir for the past 20 years and was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma M. Watson of Lenoir, N.C.; one son, Ricky Dean Watson Jr. of Bristol, Va.; one stepson, Shawn McCracken of Lenoir; one sister, Karen Morrison of Meadowview; one brother, Ronnie W. Watson of Lenoir; a special niece, Rhonda White of Lenoir; three grandchildren; one other niece; and two nephews.
The funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the graveside at Rush Creek Cemetery with Jeff Lovitt, minister, officiating. Whitt
Norman Carwood Whitt, 80, of Marion, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Wellmont Hospice in Bristol, Tenn.
He was born in Smyth County to the late James (Jim) F. and Margaret Ashby Whitt and was preceded in death by one brother, James Alvin Whitt; and three sisters, Martha Jane Whitt, Mildred Cress and Edna Ruth Patrick.
He retired from the Town of Marion and received a key to the Town of Marion for his service. He was an avid fisherman and acquired many awards over the years.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Peake Whitt; three sons, Billy Ed Whitt and wife Dorothy of Chilhowie, Michael Whitt and wife Donna, and Daniel Whitt, all of Marion; four daughters, Vietta Osborne of New York, Norma Gene Combs and husband Pete, Margaret Whitt and Freda Whitt, all of Marion; four sisters, Freda I. Whitt, Helen Burgess and Mary Geneva Brown, all of Marion, and Mary Caroline Ratliff of Chilhowie; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and many loving family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Horton officiating. Interment followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends Monday evening at the funeral home.
