Phibbs
Ruby J. Phibbs of Damascus, 65, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.
She was a life-long resident of Washington County.
Her husband, Ralph Phibbs, preceded her in death.
She is survived by: one daughter, Marjorie "Midge" Wolfe and her husband, David Widener, of Damascus; two granddaughters, Paula Michelle Wolfe and Khala Audrey Wolfe, both of Damascus; two sisters, Evelyn Payley of Saltville and Lorraine Burke of Roanoke; two brothers, Henry Fields and Joe Fields, both of Abingdon; a special friend, Jack Houston of Damascus; and several nieces and nephews.

Blackwell
Mack Jefferson Blackwell Jr. of Abingdon, 72, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Saltville and was a son of the late Mack Jefferson Blackwell Sr.
He was a 1951 graduate of Virginia Military Institute with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He was an engineer and advertising consultant for Olin Chemical Corp., Thompson and Litton Associates, S & S Corp. and Ingersoll Rand. He was the owner of Blackwell and Associates, which he opened in 1993.
He was a lover of music, having played the trumpet since age 14 and with several bands during the "Big Band Era." He directed the choir at Madam Russell United Methodist Church in Saltville for fifteen years and sang in and directed choirs at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and Abingdon United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
Mack had served on the administrative board of Johnston Memorial Hospital for twenty years, serving as president for a number of years. He was a member of the Emory & Henry Board of Visitors, a member of the board of the Washington County Industrial Development Authority and a member and past president of the Virginia Highlands Society.
Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Patricia Preston Blackwell; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Becky Blackwell of Abingdon; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Dave Williamson of Roanoke; his mother, Bess Blackwell of Saltville; a sister, Dorothy Thompson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one nephew and two nieces.
A memorial service was conducted Friday, Oct. 11, at Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Rowland and the Rev. Betty Reiff officiating. The committal and entombment was private. Blevins
Lonnie Ray Blevins, 53, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at his home in Marion. Lonnie was a loving husband, proud father, and a hard worker. He was proud to serve his country as an air ship gunner during the Vietnam War. He was a loyal chapter member and Governor of the Smyth County Moose Lodge. Lonnie was a stranger to none and a friend to all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Shirley Blevins, and two sisters, Barbara Sadler and Pam Cline.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Frankie VanName Blevins of Marion; one son, Rusty Ray Blevins of Marion; one daughter, Stacie Katherine Blevins of Marion; two brothers, Jonathan Dale and wife Ileen Blevins of Marion and William Harrison Blevins of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Brenda Vandeluyster and husband Tom of Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Patty Rowland and husband John of Marion; two brothers-in-law, James Ronnie Cline of Marion and Jim VanName and wife Diane of Newport, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Brouillette of Albany, N.Y., and Dianne Allen of Castleville, N.Y.; mother-in-law, Katherine "Kitty" VanName of Newport, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 7 at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating.

Harris
Sylvia B. Harris, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in Brien Center Health and Rehab in Durham, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Harris. She lived in Marion and Atkins area all her life until April of 2001 when she moved to Cary, N.C., to be near her granddaughter and her family. She attended Atkins Church of God and was actively involved there until recent years. She was the fifth child of a family of ten children.
Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Thelma M. and Donald A Harris of Redmond, Wash.; one sister, Lucile Clark of Maryland; one granddaughter, Nola Boezeman and husband John; one grandson, Larry W. Byrum; two great-grandchildren, John and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Nouhad Melki officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Henderson
Ida Irene Henderson of Saltville, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.
She was born June 13, 1920, the daughter of William C. and Sally F. Taylor and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include: her husband of 56 years, Thomas W. Henderson; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and James Worley of Saltville; grandson James C. Robinson and fiancé Rachel Adams of Saltville; granddaughter Cynthia and husband Brian Ward of Saltville; three great-grandchildren, Guston Robinson, Zachary Barrett and Danielle Ward, all of Saltville; three sisters, Hazel Dailey of Wheeling, W.Va., and Marilyn Barnard and Mrs. J.S. "Tazoni" Surber, both of Saltville; special friends, Norma Gobble, Patsy Owens and Joyce Testerman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Mumpower and the Rev. Woodrow McIntyre officiating. Interment will follow in Elizabeth Cemetery.

Phipps
Blanche Pansy Phipps, 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in the Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Stafford.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Ben and Leona Thomas and was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Phipps, and a daughter, Virginia Blanche Phipps. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include: two daughters and one son-in-law, Juanita and Coolidge Ellis of Marion and Sue Jones of Alexandria; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Ben and Barbara Phipps of Stafford, Steve Phipps, Robert Phipps and George Phipps, all of Alexandria; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. Interment will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Potter
Ransford A. Potter of Troutdale, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
He was born April 4, 1920, at Ironton, Ohio, to Dr. E. W. Potter and Garnett Nell Miller Potter. He served in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator in World War II. He was a self-employed realtor and appraiser.
Survivors include: his wife, Clarice W. Potter; one son Ransford A. Potter II and his wife, Nena, of Lexington, S.C.; one brother, Dr. Willis C. Potter of Russell, Ky.; and one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Troutdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Riggins and the Rev. Scott Flippin officiating. Interment was in Troutdale Cemetery. Testerman
Cleo Vida Dishner Testerman, 94, the widow of Dewey B. Testerman, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at her home in Marion.
She was a member of Park Presbyterian Chapel. She was a loving and beloved mother, grandmother and sister. She loved her flowers and hummingbirds. She especially loved feeding her family on Sundays and holidays.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Fanny Testerman, and two grandchildren, Dewey William Testerman and Wanda Faye Ferrell.
Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Frank Chudoba of Disputanta, Betty and Bill Miller of Glade Spring, and Molly and Tommy Tilson of Seven Mile Ford; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John D. Testerman of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Jim and June Testerman of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Thelma Jasik and Leona Preston, both of Marion; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Oct. 9, at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor William T. Wing III officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion.

Campbell
Earleen R. Campbell of Damascus, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at her residence.
She was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Damascus most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rosie Rupard; her husband, Hubert Campell; and two sisters, Hazel Noland and Shirley Jean Winters. She was a member of the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad Women's Auxiliary and the Damascus Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: one son, Ronnie Campbell of Damascus; one daughter, Cathy Canody and husband Doug of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Miranda Canody of Blacksburg and Zachary Canody of Abingdon; three sisters, Grace Rupard of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., Beulah Robinson of Mountain City, Tenn., and Margaret Lewis and husband Wayne of Bristol, Tenn.; two brothers, Hoover Rupard and wife Doris, and Dean Rupard and wife Janet, both of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Damascus Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cathy Carpenter officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park.

Mary Widner Duncan of High Point, N.C., 60, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at her residence.
She was born May 21, 1942, in Smyth County, a daughter of Robert N. and Essie Pennington Widner. She had been a resident of the High Point area for the last 38 years and had worked at Alma Desk Co. and Burlington Industries. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was involved in the Lady Ambassadors Group in the church.
Survivors include: her husband, Alton Duncan, whom she married in 1976; a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Jennifer) Halsey of High Point; two foster children, Mrs. Howard (Karen) Walker of Denton and Roger Catron of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Madelyn Halsey, Meghan Walker and Kristen Catron; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Betty Widner and James and Sue Widner, all of Marion, and Edward and Carolyn Widner of Wytheville; a foster brother, Tommy Widner and his wife, Peggy, of Marion; and a sister, Mrs. Donald (Linda) Reece of Archdale, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Tabernacle Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Todd T. Brock and Ryan Cawley, youth pastor of the church. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cumby Funeral Service in High Point.

Josephine "Jo" Crewey Gregory, 68, widow of Bennie Gregory, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Wanda Crewey, and Joey and Deanna Crewey, all of Marion; two sisters, Mary Vernon of Church Hill, Tenn., and Louise Goodrich of Edgeley, N.D.; two brothers, Junior Genga of Tacoma, Wash., and Charles Genga of Colonial Heights; six grandchildren, Joshua Crewey, Jacob Crewey, Jessica Crewey, Joey Crewey, Alesia Crewey, and Claudia Crewey; one great-grandchild, Joshua Trey Crewey; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Jeff Salter.
