Russell
Hershiel A. "Russ" Russell, age 67, of Saltville, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Russell was a member of McCalls Gap Presbyterian Church and owner and operator of Russell’s Bargain World in Washington County.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Russell; four sons, Arnie Russell and Jack Babcock, both of Saltville, Michael Babcock of Fairfax and Carl Babcock of Florida; four daughters, Helen Marie Landon and Shelley Cowen, both of Saltville, Charlene Durning of Florida and Rebecca Culp of West Virginia; three brothers, Alfred Russell and Elbert Russell Jr., both of Florida, and Cleatus "C.K." Russell of Keen Mountain; two sisters, Pauline Taylor of Clearwater, Fla., and Betty Sue Overstreet of Havanna, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. in McCalls Gap Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eugene Baldwin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to a church of choice, American Cancer Society or Salvation Army.

Smith
Jessie Rosalie Smith, age 80, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Mrs. Smith had grown up in Ashe County, N.C. She was a registered nurse in the Long Beach, Calif., area where she had also managed apartments.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Greer of Danville, and her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Greer Sr.
Survivors include her husband, John Smith of Long Beach, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Paul Crouse of Marion; one granddaughter and her husband, Robin and Roger Porter of Galax; one grandson, Richard Crouse of Marion; three brothers, Hilton Greer of Marion, Harold Greer of Glade Spring, Clarence Greer of West Jefferson, N.C.; one sister, Bessie Williams of Bassett; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marion Boggs, the Rev. Garland Day, and Dr. Carlton Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Widener
Elliott Van Widener, age 92, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Widener was born in Washington County, a son of the late Walter and Mary Thomas Widener. He was the widower of Myrtle Thomas Widener.
Surviving are eight daughters, Mildred Corum, Lucille Thompson and Lenise Stout, all of Bristol, Edna Owens of Gray, Tenn., Hazel Holmes of Meadowview, Doris Trent and Thelma Alexander, both of Glade Spring and June Creasy of Lenoir, N.C.; one son, Raymond Widener of Glade Spring; 32 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Bill Haywood and Everette Morefield, ministers, and the Rev. Mahlon Wyatt officiating. Burial was in Rush Creek Cemetery.

Williams
Kathryn Mottern Williams, age 82, widow of Howard W. Williams, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Williams was born in Elizabethton in Carter County, Tenn. She attended East Tennessee Teachers College and taught first grade for several years in Tennessee. She married Howard W. Williams in 1940 and moved with him to Marion in 1946. She was a homemaker and later served as a secretary in the Smyth County School System.
Mrs. Williams was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Fellowship Sunday School class and participated in several other church and civic organizations. In 1994, she moved to the Atlanta, Ga., area to be near her family.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Mottern Coleman; and a brother, Edward Mottern.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Page and Dan Walden of Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson, Zack Walden of Athens, Ga.; one granddaughter, Katy Tubesing and husband Mark; one great-grandson, Jake Tubesing of Atlanta, Ga.
A private burial was held on Wednesday, Dec. 29, in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held Sunday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 115 S. Church St., Marion, VA 24354 or to the charity of your choice.

Wohlford
Beulah Lambert Wohlford, age 93, of Barco, N.C., formerly of Crockett, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 in the Barco Sentra Nursing Home.
Mrs. Wohlford was a native of Bland County and was the daughter of the late William Stuart and Ida Rebecca King Lambert. She was a retired seamstress and was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clarence "Jay Byrd" Wohlford and one grandson, William Edmond Sawyer.
She is survived by one son, William P. "Bill" Wohlford, Roanoke; two daughters, Betty W. Loomis and Doris W. Sawyer, both of Barco, N.C.; one sister, Bertha L. Dix, Wytheville; one sister-in-law, Ruth Lambert, Wytheville; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 1, at 1 p.m. at the West End Cemetery in Wytheville with the Rev. Robert Layell officiating. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the William E. Sawyer 4-H Scholarship, c/o Currituck County 4-H Foundation, P.O. Box 10, Currituck, N.C. 27929. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Woods
Andrew Woods, age 70, of Dade City, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in Pasco Community Hospital.
Mr. Woods was born in Sugar Grove. He had lived in Dade City for 29 years, moving there from Rural Retreat.
He was a retired caretaker in the funeral industry and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion Post 118 in Zephyrhills, Fla., and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Marcia Woods, Dade City, Fla.; six sons, Steve Woods, Dade City, Fla., Allen Woods and Roger Wynn, both of Rural Retreat, Roger Woods, Marion, Wade Woods and Andy Woods, both of Atkins; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 9 a.m. at Oakley Funeral Home Chapel in Dade City with burial in Floral Memory Gardens, Dade City, Fla.

Atkins
Margaret Isabella Atkins, age 97, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
Miss Atkins was the daughter of the late W.J. and Charlotte Holmes Atkins. She was a member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and The Catechism for 25 years. She played on the High School State Basketball Championship Team in 1920. She attended Marion College, Hollins College, Drexal College, graduated from Brenau College and was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. She later received her Master’s Degree from Virginia Tech and taught at the college level in Summerville, N.J., and Lutherville, Md.
Miss Atkins was a member of the Marion Garden Club, the Smyth County Historical Society and played Bridge and Contract Bridge.
Surviving are two nephews, K. W. Callan of Marion, and W.J. Baughman of Johnson City, Tenn.; three nieces, Margaret Ketner of Salisbury, N.C., Helen Brooke of Millcreek, Wash., and Charlotte Williams of Richmond.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 1, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Alan Gray and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial was in Round Hill Cemetery.

Barker
Vesta Pugh Barker, age 82, formerly of Troutdale, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Barker was the widow of Walter Gowan Barker. She was born March 27, 1917 at Crumpler, N.C., to Roy Bruce and Hattie Virginia Moxley Pugh. She was a member of Fox Creek Regular Baptist Church in Troutdale.
Surviving are two sons, Douglas Lee Barker of Whiteford, Md., and Edward Bruce Barker of Telford, Tenn.; four daughters, Vesta Barker Aldrich, Vernon, Ariz., Thelma Barker Piercy, Iona Barker Brady, both of Ventura, Calif., and Virginia Ann Barker Dempsey of Chilhowie; one brother, Monroe (Bud) Pugh, Mouth of Wilson,; one sister, Mary Lou Johnson of Galax; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 1, at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Halsey and Mr. Arlen Ray Hall Jr., officiating. Burial was in Chestnut Hill Methodist Church Cemetery in Ashe County, N.C.

Jackson
James Roosevelt Jackson, age 91, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at the Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem.
Mr. Jackson was a retired coal miner and was a member of the United Mine Workers Union.
He is survived by one daughter, Susan J. Tuell of Chilhowie; three sons, James R. Jackson Jr., Elliston, Edward E. Jackson and Herbert Michael Jackson, both of Chilhowie; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 2, at 7 pm in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Porter Riner officiating. Committal services and entombment were held Monday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Roselawn Cemetery and Mausoleum in Marion.

Morris
Charles J. Morris, age 77, of Chilhowie, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999 in Valley Health Care Center.
He is survived by five daughters, Edna Sexton of Warden, Ill., Mary Cale of Marion, Brenda Price, Linda Lefler and Sherry Morris, all of Chilhowie; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial followed in Round Hill Cemetery.

Sexton
Rev. Charles E. Sexton, age 78, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Rev. Sexton was a retired United Methodist Church minister and was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian M. Sexton of Marion; three daughters, Katherine Garza of Fredericksburg, Jennifer Leggett of Suffolk, and Patricia Sigman of Richmond; one son, Charles E. Sexton III of Willis, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Donna Vernon of Marion; one stepson, Darryl Murray of Roanoke; three brothers, L.D. Sexton of Pennington, Ky., Arliss Sexton of Harland, Ky., and K.D. Sexton of San Bernardino, Calif.; 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 2, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with burial in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Wormser
Don E. Wormser, age 46, of Chilhowie, formerly of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Wormser was the son of Art and Crossette Goebel of Hendersonville, N.C.
Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Carol Lester Wormser; two daughters and son-in-law, Sandra and William Griffin of Chilhowie and Tabetha Spradling of Daytona, Fla.; three brothers, Paul Goebel and Bruce Goebel, both of Illinois, and Mark Goebel of Port Orange, Fla.; his grandmother, Teresa Germann of Hendersonville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Brandon Griffin of Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
There will be no services.
