Anderson
Mary Anne Martin Anderson, age 50, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Mark Hester of Marion; one son, Ralph D. Anderson Jr., Wytheville; one sister, Audrey Kate Pittman of Richmond; four grandchildren: Markie Shantel Hester, Shawnee Nicole Hester, Tabatha Gwynn Anderson and Brandy Lee-Ann Anderson.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Baker and the Rev. Jody Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, Md. 20852-9813.

Bear
Charles E. "Top" Bear Sr., age 78, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 at his home in Rural Retreat.
Mr. Bear was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong farmer and a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Cordia Snavely Bear of Rural Retreat; three daughters and one son-in-law, Joan Minnick of Bristol, Becky Langston, Ellen and Tom Tilson, all of Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Brenda Bear of Rural Retreat; one brother, David F. Bear of Atkins; eight grandchildren: Scott Bear, B.J. Bear, Michael Minnick, Chris Langston, Kim Langston, Ben Langston, Emily Tilson and Katie Tilson; two great-grandchildren, Jake Langston and Kai Langston; two step-grandchildren, Melissa Musser and Stephanie McCleese; one step-great-grandchild, Garrett Musser.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Fulton United Methodist Church in Groseclose with the Rev. Rance Edwards and the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lynn Manweiler, 448 Cummings St., P.O. Box 350, Abingdon, VA 24210, or Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382, or the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101.

Davidson
Alvin Davidson, age 46, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born in Saltville.
Surviving are his wife, Ramona Davidson; two brothers, Roger Pidney Davidson of Berea, Ky., and Randall Davidson of Saltville; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Dan Thompson of Marion.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. in Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Surber officiating. Burial was in Westwood Memorial Cemetery.

Poston
Irene Blevins Poston, age 66, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000 at Calico Rock, Ark.
Mrs. Poston was born Dec. 13, 1933 in Saltville, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Nellie Hogston Blevins. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Calvin Blevins. She worked as a clerk/housekeeper at Jenkins Motel in Calico Rock for the past eight years.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Poston, Calico Rock, Ark.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Maria Poston, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeff and Sherry Poston, Pilot Point, Texas; three daughters and sons-in-law, David and Sandra Krieter, Rick and Debby Price, all of Chesterton, Ind., and Bill and Cathy Walters, Schererville, Ind.; one brother, Jack Blevins, Bristol, Tenn.; four sisters, Peggy Helton, Mary Zebridis, Daphne Frye, and Connie Sword, all of Saltville; 13 grandchildren: Brian, Chad and Matthew Krieter; Bryan Hood, Shannon, Kelli and Justin Price; Colleen and Kaitlyn Walters; Aaron, Cody, Sam and Chad Poston; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Haley Krieter.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 6, at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home.

Stowers
Rev. Marion G. "Buddy" Stowers Jr., age 65, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 at his home in Wytheville.
Rev. Stowers was born in Smyth County, the son of the late Marion G. Sr. and Carmel Atwell Stowers. He was a former pastor at Calvary Full Gospel Church and was retired from the American Electric Power Company. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was preceded in death by a brother, Manuel Worley Stowers.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Wolford Stowers of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Glenn Gibson of Rural Retreat, Melissa and Ronnie Smith of Denham Springs, La., and Faith and Jeff Copenhaver of Crockett; two sons, Edgar "Eddie" Stowers and Marion G. "Mooney" Stowers III, both of Wytheville; five grandchildren: Erica Tyne Gibson, Leah Mae Gibson, Sarah Michelle Gibson, Daniel Curtis Smith and Lindsay Amber Smith; two sisters, Mozelle Faulkerson of Cambridge, Ohio, and Maxine Hall of Crockett; a foster brother, Harold "Butch" Atwell of Max Mewdows; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Full Gospel Church in Crockett with the Rev. James Dean Brewster, the Rev. Tony Holley and the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #9. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Surber
Lucille Blevins Surber, age 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mrs. Surber was born in Whitetop and lived most of her life in Glade Spring. She was a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 30 years.
Surviving are her husband, Berkley Surber; two sons, Fred Surber and Jeff Surber, both of Bristol; one sister, Gay Poston of Marion; three grandchildren, Gary Surber, Jason Surber and Wesley Surber.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 7, at 3:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Turner and the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Sword
William N. "Bill" Sword, age 70, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Sword was born July 22, 1929 to the late Walter B. and Gertrude Sword of Saltville. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for the Olin Corporation for 18 years.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Walter (June) Sword; one sister, Lois Comer; and one grandson, Joshua M. Sword.
Survivors include his wife, Wanoka (Oakie) Sword, Saltville; two sons, Kyle Sword and Richard Sword, both of Saltville; three daughters, Carol Nutter, Kay Frye, both of Saltville, and Cindy Sword of the home; one sister, Freda Olinger, Saltville; four brothers, James Sword, Pete Sword and Eddie Sword, all of Saltville, and Jerry Sword of North Carolina; two sons-in-law, Rusty Nutter and Jody Frye, both of Saltville; two daughters-in-law, Lesa Sword and Stacy Sword, both of Saltville; special friend, Ernie Montgomery, Saltville.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. David Mumpower and the Rev. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow at the Elizabeth Cemetery.

Taylor
Jason Todd "Jay Tee" Taylor, age 19, of Glade Spring, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was a son of John and JoAnne Brannon Taylor of Glade Spring, a freshman at Virginia Intermont College and a 1999 graduate of Patrick Henry High School where he was a participant in the school athletic program. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Amanda Leigh Seymore of Glade Spring; grandmothers, Marie Polly "Mamaw Polly" Bowers Brannon of Abingdon, and Hazel W. "Nannie Taylor" Taylor of Meadowview; special friend, Sara Stiltner of Meadowview; several cousins, aunts, uncles, great-aunts, and great-uncles.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. in Glade Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Timothy O. Bird officiating. Burial was in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery.

Tibbs
Flossie L. Tibbs, age 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mrs. Tibbs was the widow of William Woodrow Tibbs and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Armstrong. She was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Earline Blakely of Clio, Mich., and Lucille McFarlane of Kingsport, Tenn; one son, Frank Tibbs, Dade City, Fla.; one sister, Edith Shupe of Atkins; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Faith Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Lundy and the Rev. Bobby Sawyers officiating. Burial will follow in Wassum Cemetery.

Umbarger
John Milton Umbarger, age 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mr. Umbarger was a son of the late Milton Brown and Mary Josephine Cole Umbarger, a retired farmer and a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Willard Umbarger; and a sister, Virginia Eleanor Vicars.
Surviving are two sisters, Eula Mae Conner of Agaura Hills, Calif., and Anna Elizabeth Umbarger of Chilhowie; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John H. Graham officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Blackwell
Bessie Lester Blackwell, age 91, of Saltville, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Blackwell was a lifelong member of the McCready Methodist Church and had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Puckett for the past two years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Blackwell.
Survivors include one sister, Lucille L. Waugaman, Salem; one sister-in-law, Mamie Lester, Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, in the Mount Rose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McCready Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1093, Saltville, VA 24370.

DeBord
Walter Ben DeBord, age 57, of Bristol, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. DeBord was a son of Ettie J. DeBord of Abingdon and was employed with Kern’s Bakery for 32 years. He was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl H. DeBord.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Julia DeBord; two sons, Jeffrey DeBord of Bristol, and Patrick DeBord of the home; four sisters, Maudeen Blevins of Chilhowie and Mattie DeBord, Glenda DeBord and Brenda DeBord, all of Abingdon; three brothers, Gerald DeBord and Kermit DeBord, both of Abingdon, and Jim DeBord of Chilhowie; three grandsons, David, Andrew and Timothy DeBord; daughter-in-law, Martha DeBord; and brother-in-law, Lloyd Blevins Sr.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 9, at 1:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lyons Smith and the Rev. Roger Hearl officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Abingdon.
